Os rios Iguaçu e Barigüi, nos trechos afetados pelo vazamento da REPAR (2000), foram amostrados em 18 pontos, em 3 campanhas (2007-2008). TPH, BTEX e HPA ocorrem na água com concentrações muito baixas ou nem foram detectados. Não há aporte de hidrocarbonetos proveniente da REPAR. No sedimento, não foram detectados BTEX, HPA têm concentrações baixas ou não foram detectados; TPH ocorre em concentrações 10 vezes menores que o padrão ambiental, mas foi detectado em todas as amostras. As maiores concentrações ocorrem no rio Iguaçu, a jusante da foz do Barigüi. Alguns HPA presentes no óleo derramado só ocorrem neste trecho, sugerindo origem a partir do rio Barigüi. As razões diagnósticas de HPA no sedimento não estabelecem ligação direta com o vazamento da REPAR, por predominarem indicações de fonte pirolítica ou mista. Entretanto, estudo do sedimento do Banhado 4 mostrou que muitas das razões diagnósticas de HPA que indicavam fonte petrogênica no óleo original passaram a indicar fonte pirolítica 7 anos após o acidente. To contribute to the knowledge of lotic zooplankton from dammed and free stretches, we tested the hypothesis that the ecological attributes are different between these environments, which are subjected to several effects caused by different hydrological conditions. The study was carried out in the low Iguacu river, a large hydrographic basin in the south of Brasil. Two samplings were performed, one in the dry period (April/04) and the other in the atypical rainy period (July/04), in five stations downstream a large reservoir, and other 12 stations in four tributaries representing the upper, intermediate and low regions of each river. The observations suggest a clear spatial distribution of zooplankton in lotic stretches subjected or not to damming, mainly due to the effects of physical, chemical and biological variables. Furthermore, the atypical rainfall promoted alterations in community structure when compared to the dry period.

A anomalia geoquímica de mercúrio em sedimento de corrente da bacia hidrográfica do rio Iguaçu, Estado do Paraná, delimitada por um levantamento prévio de geoquímica regional, foi investigada através de determinações das concentrações do metal em rochas, solo e sedimento fluvial. O rio Iguaçu está inserido no contexto geológico da Bacia do Paraná e a porção correspondente ao alto vale, no município de Curitiba e vizinhanças, compreende rochas gnáissico-migmatíticas do embasamento cristalino (Arqueano-Proterozóico Inferior) e sedimentos pleistocênicos da Bacia de Curitiba. Na área de estudo ocorrem rochas vulcânicas da Formação Serra Geral, Grupo São Bento (Cretáceo) e folhelhos negros da Formação Irati, Grupo Passa Dois (Permiano-Triássico). Os teores de Hg foram determinados através de Espectrometria de Absorção Atômica por decomposição térmica com correção do efeito Zeeman. A taxonomic survey was carried out on Coscinodiscophyceae and Fragilariophyceae found in the Iguaçu River catchment area within Iguaçu National Park, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Between September 2007 and August 2008, we collected 24 samples from two stations on the Iguaçu River, upstream and downstream of the falls. We identified 37 taxa, including 22 specific and infraspecific taxa of Coscinodiscophyceae, together with 15 specific and infraspecific taxa of Fragilariophyceae. Melosira ruttneri Hustedt and Fragilaria alpestris Krasske ex Hustedt represent new records for Brazil.

Cytogenetic analysis of Trichomycterus davisi, collected from the Iguaçu River basin, has shown a diploid number of 2n = 54 chromosomes. However, we observed intra-individual numerical polymorphism in a T. davisi specimen. There were three cell populations with diploid number 2n = 54 (40M + 12SM + 2ST), 2n = 55 (40M + 12SM + 2ST + 1M) and 2n = 56 (40M + 12SM + 2ST + 2A) chromosomes. This variation was attributed to a probable post-zygotic non-disjunction of a metacentric chromosome of small/middle size, followed by centric fission, which originated in this individual.

Astyanax fishes are among the most important food-web components of South America rivers. In the Iguaçu River basin, the Astyanax genus is represented mainly by endemic species. For millions of years, that hydrographic basin has been geographically isolated from the Paraná River basin by the Iguaçu Falls. Recently, a species from the Upper Paraná River basin identified as Astyanax bimaculatus was revised and described as a new species named Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski, 2000. Fauna endemism and geographic isolation triggered interest in investigations to evaluate the identification and genetic relatedness among two A. altiparanae populations from the Upper Paraná River basin and the population identified as A. bimaculatus in the Iguaçu River, upstream from the Iguaçu Falls. Mitochondrial DNA sequences and RAPD markers revealed high genetic diversity within each population, as well as low genetic distance, high gene flow, and high mitochondrial DNA similarity among all three populations. In conjunction with morphological similarities, these results demonstrated that the population presently known as Astyanax bimaculatus in the Iguaçu River should actually be stated as Astyanax altiparanae. Chromosomal analyses were performed in the fish Astyanax sp.D collected from three different points: two streams from the right bank and one from the left bank of the Upper Iguaçu River, Paraná State, Brazil. The individuals from all localities possess 2n = 50 chromosomes and a FN = 84 (4m+24sm+6st+16a). The C-banding pattern was similar in all populations. However, within each population, an interindividual variation concerning the number and localization of heterochromatic bands was observed. Some of these variations were quantified in each population, and the results indicate that the samples were not different when studying the variable frequencies. Considering that Astyanax sp.D is typical in the headwaters of the Iguaçu River, these results were not expected. The data indicate that gene flow is occurring and that the Iguaçu River is not an ecological barrier among the Astyanax sp. D populations.

Samples of Crenicichla iguassuensis and a morph from the Iguaçu River which differed from C. iguassuensis by its lips morphology were examined by isozyme starch electrophoresis technique. The analysis of 27 enzyme loci exhibited a genetic identity of 0.993 between the two morphs. No diagnostic locus was found that permitted to distinguish the two Crenicichla morphs. The data obtained in this investigation did not support the existence of two distinct species for this genus in the Iguaçu River, which suggested that the morphs stood for two polymorphic forms of Crenicichla iguassuensis.

The Piraquara river basin (Upper Iguaçu River basin - Brazil) was studied as an ecological system throughout a complete seasonal cycle, comprising the rainy and dry season. Analyzes of 16 physical and chemical water variables (dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, temperature, pH, conductivity, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, ortophosphates, nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, reagent silicate, total suspended solids, chlorophyll - a, flow velocity and depth) showed correlations between water composition and watershed physiographic features, and the Principal Component Analysis allowed to evidence spatial gradients and seasonal differences. The sampling points were clustered in patches with homogeneous behavior, according to ecologycal concepts: patch 1, with strong influence of Serra do Mar mountains; patch 2, medium course, under Piraquara Dam influence and patch 3, under wetlands influence. Two main factors of serial discontinuity were identified: the Piraquara dam effect and the influence of wetlands. The watershed zoning based on limnological characteristics seeks to subsidize research and biomonitoring for this public springs area.

Hoplias malabaricus (trahyra) is a widespread fish species over the Neotropical region with diversified inter-populational karyotypes (cytotypes), which may correspond to a species complex. Despite the wide distribution in the South American basins, some authors have questioned its natural origin in the Iguaçu river, an important Brazilian river basin which is characterized by several endemic fish species. We have analyzed the karyotype of H. malabaricus from different collection sites of this river, by conventional and banding methods. Our results, in addition to our previous data concerning geographic distribution of the cytotypes, contribute to better understand the origin of H. malabaricus on the Iguaçu river, reinforcing the proposition that it is a natural fish species in this river basin.

The cytogenetic data available in the literature about the ichthyofauna of the Iguaçu River basin were analyzed in this review. The ichthyofauna was characterized by the high level of endemism and by the low diversity of species. Twenty-four of the eighty-one species were already karyotyped; six Characiformes, fourteen Siluriformes and four Perciformes. The chromosomal data showed the taxonomic and systematic complexity of the groups. Hypothesis related to the evolution of some Characiformes and Siluriformes groups from the Iguaçu River are proposed, as well as the utilization of karyotypic data for cytotaxonomy.

We designed a field survey (the entire river length; not dammed: First and Second plateaus; dammed: Third Plateau) to test the hypothesis that the cascade of reservoirs promoted a reduction in species richness and changed the composition of Oligochaeta assemblage along the Iguaçu River. Changes in environmental variables and in richness and composition of Oligochaeta were summarized by Canonic Correspondence Analysis. Along the Iguaçu River, conductivity, and altitude decreased, whereas temperature increased. Oligochaeta composition showed a significant spatial variation, with higher abundances of the family Tubificidae and the genus Dero (Naididae) occurring in the First Plateau. In the Second and Third plateaus, few species were dominant, with increases in the presence of species of Naididae below dams. We found a clear decrease in species richness along the Iguaçu River. Moreover, we found that Oligochaeta assemblage was influenced by some environmental variables such as altitude, conductivity, substrate type and temperature, and by anthropogenic activities (human occupation and damming). The results supported the use of Oligochaeta as surrogate taxa to predict environmental changes along impacted (dammed and eutrophic) rivers. The limnological characteristics and the phytoplankton community of the pelagic region of the São João River, tributary of the Iguaçu River, Iguaçu National Park were analyzed from August 2008 to July 2009. 221 taxa were identified and the Bacillariophyceae class was the most representative. Bacillariophyceae and Chrysophyceae were the dominant classes in density and Bacillariophyceae in biovolume. According to the DCA carried out for phytoplankton density and biovolume, significant differences were identified between the periods, and between the sites and study periods, respectively. The highest richness of species reached 40 taxa in September 2008 at station 1. The Shannon-Wiener diversity indexes and evenness, calculated from the density of phytoplankton, were temporally heterogeneous and spatially similar. In general, the significant temporal variations in the composition of the phytoplankton community were due to variations in limnological conditions, mainly temperature, transparency and nutrients. Spatially the structure was more similar due to the proximity among the stations. Moreover, the similarity of the distribution of communities in lotic environments were due to the unidirectional flow.

Erythrinidae include Neotropical teleost fish that are widely distributed in South America. Hoplias Gill, 1903 include two large groups: H. malabaricus Bloch, 1794 and H. lacerdae Miranda Ribeiro, 1908. Hoplias malabaricus is characterized by remarkable karyotype diversity, with some karyomorphs widely distributed geographically while others are more restricted to certain river basins. Cytogenetic analyzes were performed in a population of Hoplias malabaricus from the Wildlife Refuge of Campos de Palmas, the Iguaçu River basin. The specimens showed diploid number of 42 chromosomes (24m+18sm) without differentiated sex chromosomes system. The impregnation by silver nitrate showed multiple AgNORs. Seven pairs (4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 20 and 21) carrying 18S rDNA were detected by FISH. Heterochromatin was verified in the centromeric and pericentromeric region of most chromosomes and the terminal region of some pairs. FISH with 5S rDNA probes showed two chromosome pairs carrying these sites in the interstitial region (8 and 14). Considered the largest hydric complex in Paraná, the basin Iguaçu has strategic importance, especially regarding the characteristics of the river, by its great extension and the highly exploited hydropower, forming five reservoirs that generate more than 6.000 MW energy. In detriment of its strategic significance, the damming of the Iguassu River modifies the hydraulic characteristics, which may cause some environmental damage, as the incidence of cyanobacterial blooms in reservoirs may submit toxic potential. Are few studies that consider the Iguaçu basin as a whole, evaluating the river and reservoirs forming this important hydrographic complex. Guided by this understanding, this study aims to evaluate the relationship between water quality in the Rio Iguaçu basin and the influence on the occurrence and concentration of microcystin-LR in its reservoirs. For this purpose, three collections of sampling were performed in Iguazu River from its source in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba to its mouth in Foz do Iguaçu. Knowledge of ecological changes in a reservoir is of great relevance to the study environmental impact and of the water quality, especially the knowledge of phytoplankton community estructure, that has a role importante in aquatic ecosystems, which respond quickly to physical and chemical changes of the water, and markedly contribute to the production of organic matter. The objective of this work was to analyze the composition and abundance of phytoplankton under the influence of abiotic variables along a longitudinal axis in four reservoirs in a cascade system, emphasizing the importance of cyanobacteria populations. The forests of the Iguaçu river floodplain, which are part of two distinct phytogeographic units, Mixed Ombrophillous Forest and Semidecidual Seasonal Forest, are currently very modified. This alteration occurred due to historical factors and contemporaneous anthropic action. Epiphytic bromeliads, due to its specific substrate dependence and its strategy to obtain nutrients through their trichomes, are considered indicators of environmental condition alterations. Taking into account the reduced amount of research using this approach and the inexistence of systematic and continuous works with bromeliads along Brazilian's rivers, it was studied the floristic and the structure of the forests, and the communities of bromeliads present on aggradation and degradation surfaces of the compartments established from the first until the third highland of Paraná. In each area, the qualitative and quantitative data of bromeliads were related to the physical factors of the environment, like streambed type, height of the border, predominant geomorphic sites and soil water saturation. The work aimed to show variations in the composition and structure of the phytoplankton community at high water and low water in Iguaçu Falls, Iguaçu River and to examine the influence of these waterfalls and environmental variables on the community. Phytoplankton samples were taken monthly during a year from two sampling stations in the Iguaçu River. A total of 408 taxa were identified, with Bacillariophyceae being the most strongly represented group. A large differentiation in the composition of the phytoplankton was observed between the sampling stations. The total richness and density of the phytoplankton groups was very low in both sample locations, as well as the Shannon diversity index, but the evenness value was generally high. No significant seasonal and spatial difference in the studied features of the phytoplankton community was seen. But, significant seasonal differences were observed when the density and richness of the algae classes were assessed separately. The heterogeneity of the Iguaçu River's characteristics between the sampling sites caused no significant spatial differentiation in the features of the phytoplankton community. However, the seasonal variation of the climatic conditions has significantly influenced the composition and structure of the community in the Iguaçu River.

During the period from February, 2006 to November 2007, it was developed a survey about a flowering fragment of the Ombrophylous Mixed Aluvial forest in the bank of Iguaçu River in the city of Palmeira (PR). One expects, in this way, to contribute for the knowledge of the Flora of the Paraná and to generate subsidies for future studies of preservation and recovery of aluvial forests. To get to this result it was analyzed two plots that added about 2,5 ha. The collections of botanical materials were monthly, and for the determination of the species specific bibliography it was used, eventual consultations to specialists and comparisons with registered exsiccates in herbaria of the region. The forest was presented structuralized in three stratus. Individuals distributed in 67 families, 111 genera and 134 species had collected themselves. The families which had detached in species number were Myrtaceae, Asteraceae, Solanaceae, Cyperaceae, Rubiaceae, Bromeliaceae and Poaceae. In this paper we can see how the discourse around the need for "illumination" and "force" legitimized the beginning of a hydropower policy in Paraná State, Brazil. From the analysis of some officials sources of the beginning of the republican government of the Paraná State, Brazil (1904-1913), discusses the speculation around the generation and sale of electric power, mainly for capital Curitiba. At the time, emerge the first actions for implementation of hydroelectric on the Iguaçu River, inaugurating a practice that would intensify throughout the twentieth century, especially after the 1970s, with the construction of five dams along its route.; http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7976.2013v20n29p49Neste artigo se percebe como o discurso em torno da necessidade de “iluminação” e “força” legitimou o início de uma política hidroenergética no Paraná.
