Industrial companies in developing countries are facing rapid growths, and this requires having in place the best organizational processes to cope with the market demand. Sales forecasting, as a tool aligned with the general strategy of the company, needs to be as much accurate as possible, in order to achieve the sales targets by making available the right information for purchasing, planning and control of production areas, and finally attending in time and form the demand generated. The present dissertation uses a single case study from the subsidiary of an international explosives company based in Brazil, Maxam, experiencing high growth in sales, and therefore facing the challenge to adequate its structure and processes properly for the rapid growth expected. Diverse sales forecast techniques have been analyzed to compare the actual monthly sales forecast, based on the sales force representatives’ market knowledge, with forecasts based on the analysis of historical sales data. The dissertation findings show how the combination of both qualitative and quantitative forecasts, by the creation of a combined forecast that considers both client´s demand knowledge from the sales workforce with time series analysis, leads to the improvement on the accuracy of the company´s sales forecast.

Arraiolos tapestries are probably one of the richest artistic Portuguese expressions in terms of textile heritage. It is difficult to date the beginning of the production of rugs in Arraiolos (Southern Portugal), but they were already produced in the late 1600’s as they are listed in the inventories of Portuguese aristocratic households in the beginning of the 18th century. In this work, we present preliminary results of microanalysis by SEM-EDX and μ-PIXE of fibres from Arraiolos rugs of the Ancient Art National Museum collection in order to assess fibre identification and degradation evaluation and mordant analysis by 2D elemental mapping. This study is integrated in project “REMATAR- Rediscovering the Materials of Arraiolos Tapestries” which intends to obtain detailed and systematised information on the composition and structure of these tapestries and on their degradation processes and to use these data to improve conservation methodologies. Moreover, the collected data on the dyestuffs and mordants will hopefully allow a time scale of materials usage that could assist on the dating of other Arraiolos pieces. The results on the historic samples show that linen and hemp were used for the support (warp threads) and wool for the weaving. In general...

This study explores historical iatrosophia texts from Cyprus from a botanical and medico-pharmacological point of view focusing on remedies containing resins and gums. The iatrosophia are a genre of Greek medical literature of Byzantine origin and can be described as medicine handbooks which serve as therapeutic repositories containing recipes or advice. To extract and analyze information on plant usage in such sources – which are largely unedited texts and so far have not been translated – we investigate (i) the relationship of the iatrosophia to Dioscorides’ De Materia Medica as well as historic pharmaceutical books or standard texts on modern phytotherapy and (ii) the validity of the remedies by comparing them to modern scientific data on reported biological activities. In the six texts investigated 27 substances incorporating plant exudates are mentioned. They are obtained from over 43 taxa of higher plants and in particular are used to treat dermatological, gastrointestinal, and respiratory tract conditions. The comparison to historic pharmaceutical books and phytotherapy texts reflects the gradual decline of the use of plant exudates in Western medicine. While remarkable parallels to Dioscorides’ text exist, the non-Dioscoridean influence suggests a complex pattern of knowledge exchange. Overall...

Implementation of a second-generation radiology information system (RIS) requires attention to many issues, including work flow, system design, training, consideration for emerging technologies, and support. This presentation convers the issues, and solutions, involved in implementation and subsequent day-to-day usage of a client-server-based RIS tightly integrated with a hospital information system (HIS) using “thin client” software to limit hardware requirements for the client computers. The software and hardware implementation had to be designed for potential enterprise-wide scalability of the RIS for a system involving 11 hospitals. Issues arose regarding initial increased turn-around times, errors in importation of historical data, and problems with implementation of interfaces between the RIS and the billing system and between the RIS and the digital dictation system. Network errors and difficulties in using a thin client implementation had to be overcome. Hierarchical training was implemented, as support was switched from an “on-site” support group to a central Information System Division with responsibility to the entire enterprise.

Order sets as part of the Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) system can improve care delivery through allowing faster and easier physician order entry guided by known best practices. This study examines current utilization patterns of order sets and “a la carte” orders in a pediatric environment with a preliminary investigation of methods to automate the creation and modification of order sets using historical ordering data. We examine the current usage of order sets associated with Asthma Minor and Appendectomy Minor patients to understand how physicians are utilizing order sets, and how order set usage is associated with the time of ordering and characteristics of order sets. K-means clustering was applied to orders to generate evidence-based order sets that are learned from historical hospital data. We demonstrate that coverage rate of order sets and ordering efficiency can be increased through modifications of existing sets and creation of new sets.

Background: Emergency department (ED) based syndromic surveillance systems identify abnormally high visit rates that may be an early signal of a bioterrorist attack. For example, an anthrax outbreak might first be detectable as an unusual increase in the number of patients reporting to the ED with respiratory symptoms. Reliably identifying these abnormal visit patterns requires a good understanding of the normal patterns of healthcare usage. Unfortunately, systematic methods for determining the expected number of (ED) visits on a particular day have not yet been well established. We present here a generalized methodology for developing models of expected ED visit rates. Methods: Using time-series methods, we developed robust models of ED utilization for the purpose of defining expected visit rates. The models were based on nearly a decade of historical data at a major metropolitan academic, tertiary care pediatric emergency department. The historical data were fit using trimmed-mean seasonal models, and additional models were fit with autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) residuals to account for recent trends in the data. The detection capabilities of the model were tested with simulated outbreaks. Results: Models were built both for overall visits and for respiratory-related visits...

Ranked second world producer, Brazil has the highest soybean plantation area in grain cultivated land. This fact is especially true on the arrival of transgenic seeds which introduces genes from different species of soybean into its genome. Seed quality, an extremely important item, may be affected by different factors which may occur before and after harvest, and during all the production stages, such as drying, industrialization, storing, transport and sowing. Current research evaluates commercialization of soybean seed at the Coamo Agricultural and Industrial Cooperative of Campo Mour??o PR Brazil with regard to the product s processing and the efficiency of the quality process in seed production. Quality and quantity data on the case study refer to seed production in the years 2004 - 2005, 2005 - 2006 and the 2006 2007 harvest. Results show that cleaning processing and total seed usage indicated growth between 2004 - 2005 and 2006 - 2007, respectively, from 59.41% and 45.69% to 69.79% and 64.82%. A higher percentage of transgenically modified cultivars (RR) occurred in seed production during the 2004 2005 harvest. Varieties represented 11.67% of total processed seeds which reached 42.68% in the 2006 2007 harvest. Process may improve by technical follow-up ranging from seedling to harvest time.; A soja ocupa no Brasil a maior ??rea cultivada com gr??os...

Traffic incidents are non-recurring events that can cause a temporary reduction in roadway capacity. They have been recognized as a major contributor to traffic congestion on our nation’s highway systems. To alleviate their impacts on capacity, automatic incident detection (AID) has been applied as an incident management strategy to reduce the total incident duration. AID relies on an algorithm to identify the occurrence of incidents by analyzing real-time traffic data collected from surveillance detectors. Significant research has been performed to develop AID algorithms for incident detection on freeways; however, similar research on major arterial streets remains largely at the initial stage of development and testing.^ This dissertation research aims to identify design strategies for the deployment of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based AID algorithm for major arterial streets. A section of the US-1 corridor in Miami-Dade County, Florida was coded in the CORSIM microscopic simulation model to generate data for both model calibration and validation. To better capture the relationship between the traffic data and the corresponding incident status, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and data normalization were applied to the simulated data. Multiple ANN models were then developed for different detector configurations...

One of the key aim of ARGOMARINE focuses on the development of a platform to integrate different maritime data (such as metoceanographic data, transport data, pollution data, etc). Major national organizations such as Navies and Coast Guards are aiming to integrate different types of information to define a maritime picture on a wide scale. This entails developing complex, expensive and classified "hubs" to collect, store, analyze and disseminate the maritime data. ARGOMARINE plans to develop a Marine Information System (MIS), a connected group of ICT subsystems performing data storage, mining and analysis, decision-support, as well as a web-GIS portal for the access and usage of the products and services released to System Managers and end-users. MIS will integrate remote sensing data, field experiment results, forecast models with tools for data storage and retrieval, data manipulation, analysis and presentation; all these features will be accessible through a common interface. Operationally, the following sub-systems have been confirmed for the MIS platform: SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) image processing, hyperspectral-thermal image analysis, mathematical simulation for forecast models, dynamic risk maps management, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) management and data analysis...

When dealing with information extraction or data mining for security, one of the prerequisite is the data cleaning process, that influence deeply the final result. This is particularly true in case of data scraped automatically from online sources (web pages) that contains geographical or georeferenced information, such as movements report. In this paper we present a model, and a first partial implementation, for location resolution of string description. The domain is the monitoring and analysis of maritime container traffic, relying over the status messages generated automatically by container carriers. The model is based on the usage of different data dimensions, such as string similarity, trajectories similarity and most frequent patterns. It relies on historical data collected in order to compute segments of the containers trajectories. The realized interface, through a map-based view, provide an integration of the three spaces. This functionality allows to support human expert in associating a location to the string description provided in the raw record, in order to improve the numbers of messaqes usable for the analysis of trajectories. One of the final objective of the ConTraffic project, in which this activity is carried out...

EMBA Project Report; EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The goal of this project was to conduct research on the current method MSFSC uses to budget for its CIVMAR Support Unit (CSU) hotel contracts, how they are receipted throughout the course of the fiscal year, and finally how they are closed out at the end of the contract period. The client suspected that there were flaws in the current process and was interested in hearing any recommendations to improve the procedures in place to help alleviate the problem of over obligating the CIVMAR Pipeline Budget. Through in-person and telephone interviews, the current process for developing the Hotel Contract portion of the budget as well as the contract award, monitoring, and receipting portion were discovered. Additionally, historical hotel usage rates and historical financial data were analyzed to help determine if there were corrective actions that could be taken. In the end, it was discovered that there was a thorough process in place for awarding, monitoring, and receipting the CIVMAR Hotel Contracts and that this process was currently working as it was designed. The true cause of the problem that the client was witnessing was due to the fact that the budget for the CIVMAR Pipeline, and therefore the CIVMAR Hotel Contracts that fall into this budget...

MBA Professional Report; The goal of this project is to develop a consumable inventory management strategy for the Supply Management Unit (SMU) that will be applicable to other Department of Defense (DoD) supply support organizations. The SMU is a Marine Corps wholesale activity that provides Class IX (consumable repair part) supply support to 160 Marine Corps' units. The SMU uses the Days of Supply model to establish Requisitioning Objectives (RO) and Reorder Points (ROP), which are based upon historical usage, lead time, and supply data. Historical data is generated from Class I Natural Programs that were designed in the early 1970s. Since then, inventory management has evolved from warehouses packed with supplies to warehouses carrying just enough inventories to satisfy customer demand. The evolution of inventory management has proven that there is a direct relationship between inventory and cost in that the ability to efficiently manage inventory serves as a catalyst for reducing cost. Efficient inventory management involves the ability to forecast demand accurately, establish inventory levels prudently, and provide optimal support to the customer cost-effectively. Therefore, this project will focus on developing an inventory management strategy that efficiently balances readiness with supply chain system-wide costs.

Naval Air Systems Command's (NAVAIRs) weapons test ranges at China Lake, CA struggle to meet increasing demand. Development programs are bringing more complex and capable weapons to the ranges. The resources of the ranges are being stretched thin and not all requests for testing are accommodated. The purpose of this paper is to seek a solution to increase range throughput within the constraints of the current resources. The effort involved evaluating range usage, identifying obstacles to increased throughput, and evaluating the processes associated with the obstacles. Recommendations for process changes were made and applied to a set of historical data to determine the impact of the processes and compare them with the historical solution. Data from the analysis show that specific changes to current processes have the potential to increase throughput by 9% without the need for additional resources.; Naval Air Warfare Center author (civilian).

This study offers a new approach to grammatical constructions that express futurity in Danish, Dutch, English, German, and Swedish. Future constructions develop out of lexical elements whose meanings persist to some degree in modern usage. Future constructions thus convey not only future time reference, but also modal meanings of volition, obligation, or possibility. This multifunctionality has been a challenge for previous accounts that aimed to delimit their function to either tense or modality. The present study aims to overcome this debate and views future constructions as meaningful units of language, not as mere paradigmatic alternatives to temporal or modal categories. The present study develops a methodology that provides the study of meaning with a strong empirical basis in the form of large computerized text collections. In order to characterize the meaning of a given future construction, the present analysis investigates the types of main verbs that typically co-occur with it in actual usage: If a given construction typically occurs with intentional verbs such as write or speak, its meaning will differ from constructions that typically occur with verbs such as rain or increase. The same methodology is applied to the historical study of future constructions: If a given construction tends to co-occur with different main verbs at subsequent stages in time...

Advent of the Internet-of-Things will allow us to optimize equipment and resource usage, enabling increased efficiencies in automation and enabling new and more cost efficient business model. As tremendous growth opportunities emerge, so do the challenges such as diverse devices spanning across multiple networks, the need to manage the exponential growth of sensor generated data and to make sense of the huge influx of data in meaningful ways. The multitude of diversity can best be addressed by fundamentally opening up systems, architecture and applications. To go the next step and truly exploit the value of the sensor data would further require real-time analytics to gain intelligence and respond to events as they happen. Historical analysis can be used to look for trends, analyze collections of sensor data for correlation and formulate hints and suggestions based on usage and patterns. In this paper, we present a framework that overcomes diversity through its ability to flexibly represent sensor data on the internet. Business goals-driven information processing, information derived intelligence and information control as elements of the framework can further enable creation of new and innovative applications that enhance and exploit the value of Internet-of-Things.; Comment: 9 pages...
