The present work bring the semidiplomatics edition of manuscripts of XIX century, of General Management of Post Office in Sao Paulo.

The aim of the present paper is to present and discuss a work in progress that involves: – the creation of online editions of historical documents of a metalinguistic nature, which function both as publications and corpora, allowing for the comparison of manuscript images with the diplomatic edition and providing tools for analysis; – the application and development of tools that can easily be manipulated by users and adapted to different kinds of historical texts. The project is still in its first phase, which involves inventorying the metalinguistic texts held by the Évora Public Library (BPE). A survey of the texts of this nature identified in the various catalogues of the library has been carried out. Until now, 43 manuscripts and 200 printed texts with metalinguistic interest, all coming from the reserved catalogues of the BPE, have been identified. In the old reading room catalogue, further 313 works were also identified, while the modern catalogue is yet to be studied. As soon as the inventory is concluded, this will be followed by the organization and the online publication of a catalogue identifying and describing (bibliographical description) the works of a metalinguistic nature held by BPE. The texts’ digital processing shall begin after these previous tasks have been completed.

The present article aims to survey and assess the current state of electronic historical corpora and corpus methodology, and attempts to look into possible future developments. It highlights the fact that within the wide spectrum of corpus linguistic methodology, historical corpus linguistics has emerged as a vibrant field that has significantly added to the appeal felt for the study of language history and change. In fact, according to a historical linguist with more than fifty years of experience, "[w]e could even go as far as to say that without the support and new impetus provided by corpora, evidence-based historical linguistics would have been close to the end of its life-span in these days of rapid-changing life and research, increasing competition on the academic career track and the methodological attractions offered to young scholars" (RISSANEN, forthcoming). Historical corpora and other electronic resources have also made the study of language history attractive: working on them engages students in an individual and interactive way that they find appealing (CURZAN 2000, p. 81).

This paper presents an overview of the current state of historical linguistics in Australian languages. Australian languages have been important in theoretical debates about the nature of language change and the possibilities for reconstruction and classification in areas of intensive diffusion. Here are summarized the most important outstanding questions for Australian linguistic prehistory; I also present a case study of the Karnic subgroup of Pama–Nyungan, which illustrates the problems for classification in Australian languages and potential approaches using phylogenetic methods.

This dissertation has, as its general objective, a search for linguistic and socio-historical information on Muquém, a community which is regarded as reminiscent of Quilombo dos Palmares, located in União dos Palmares, Alagoas. As regards to the historical search, this work aims at verifying the African role in its linguistic and socio-cultural formation, having, as our basis, the national project proposal for Brazilian Portuguese History (PHPB) and the Linguistics Socio-Historical perspective (MATTOS e SILVA, 2004). As for the linguistic matter, this research has, as its objective, the checking on variation on agreement between subject and its predicative in the current discourse of that community, trying to offer, then, a better understanding on the characteristics of this linguistic phenomenon and their possible changes, using, for such work, the apparatus of the Quantitative Sociolinguistics (Labov, 1994, 2008 [1972]). Before the collected information, it is conjectured that a) the African culture had influence both in the language and in the culture of the Muquém community, b) the use of the non-formal variant will entail a percentage bigger than the one presented in the studies of the urban speech (SCHERRE, 1991; DIAS, 1996; SALGADO...

This research is an investigative study of a descriptive, comparative and interpretive nature under the auspices of the Historical Linguistics. This study presents the analysis of the vocalization of postvocalic /l/ and /r/ in speech community of Jaraguá, located in the midwest of Goiás, Brazil. In the process of vocalization, the /l/ is replaced by [y] and /r/, whose analyzed variant is [ö], with [y] and [w], providing falling diphthongs (vowel + semivowel). The postvocalic vocalization occurs in CVC and CV syllables within words, for example, salgada > saygada, alma > ayma, garfo > gayfu ~ gawfu; at the end of words the process of erasure or resyllabication predominated, as in enxoval > inxovali ~ inxová, cobertor > cubeytori ~ cubeytô. The sample group consists of 17 speakers (male and female) above 65 years old, born near the town, or people that have lived for more than 50 years in the place, with little or no level of literacy. We applied the technique of data collection based on the methodological assumptions of Ethnography, adopting a semi-structured interview. The themes of the interviews were directed to narratives and dialogues about family, childhood, migration, religious, cultural and professional activities, and especially about history and the beginning of the locality. The focus is primarily phonological...

The present paper investigates historical semantic changes of the Thai multifunctional morpheme hâj by analyzing actual tokens of hâj expressions in Thai inscriptions produced from the end of the thirteenth century1 through the twentieth century. Having examined the diachronic corpus data, I consider that the following grammaticalization pathway of hâj is most plausible: (a) verb for change of location (caused motion) > (b)verb for change of state (induced situation) > (c) complementizer preceding complement clause for either a non-volitional or volitional situation of irrealis2 (such as inducive and desiderative situations) > (d) complementizer preceding complement clause for volitional situation of irrealis (such as permissive and directive/coercive situations). On this basis, I assume that the notion of the event participant’s volition had nothing to do with early semantic changes of hâj constructions.; Australian National University

I use data from subordination strategies in Nyulnyulan languages (Non-Pama-Nyungan, Northern Australia) in order to investigate various alternative means of defining and quantifying 'complexity'. While Edmonds (1999) defines 48 distinct types of complexity (concentrating on social and natural sciences), in this paper I concentrate on three facets of complexity: descriptive complexity, ontological complexity, and parsimony in reconstruction. While historical linguists tend to maximise parsimony, in Nyulnyulan languages the minimization of one aspect of complexity necessarily adds complication elsewhere, and it therefore serves as an appropriate case study of the interdependencies between ontology, syntactic modelling, and language change.

This study presents an analysis of the palatalization process of /t/ and /d/ before vowels as [ã] [a], [e], [o] and [u] in examples such as muitxu ~ muito, prefeitxu ~ prefeito, deitxadu ~ deitado, doidzu ~ doido, founded in the Corpus of Lagoa de Pedra and Canabrava, two rural african descent communities located 40 km from the city of Arraias in the State of Tocantins. The survey participants were aged between 54 to 89 years, non-educated or having little knowledge of letters, and were born and grown in site. The methodology used for data collection was based on the model of the sociolinguistic interview, focused on the narratives of personal experience and in the history of the place. The theoretical background discusses the formation of the Portuguese language returning to its roots in Latin, as well as the formation of the Brazilian Portuguese language with focus on linguistics and socio-historical aspects that marked the early years of Portuguese colonization in Brazil, as the contact with indigenous languages and African ones. It also discusses the theories of syllable structure of the Portuguese language in the phonology, according to the linear and nonlinear standards, based on ideas from Camara Jr. (1969, 1977), Dubois (2004) and Selkirk (1982)...

We recently used computational phylogenetic methods on lexical data to test between two scenarios for the peopling of the Pacific. Our analyses of lexical data supported a pulse-pause scenario of Pacific settlement in which the Austronesian speakers originated in Taiwan around 5,200 years ago and rapidly spread through the Pacific in a series of expansion pulses and settlement pauses. We claimed that there was high congruence between traditional language subgroups and those observed in the language phylogenies, and that the estimated age of the Austronesian expansion at 5,200 years ago was consistent with the archaeological evidence. However, the congruence between the language phylogenies and the evidence from historical linguistics was not quantitatively assessed using tree comparison metrics. The robustness of the divergence time estimates to different calibration points was also not investigated exhaustively. Here we address these limitations by using a systematic tree comparison metric to calculate the similarity between the Bayesian phylogenetic trees and the subgroups proposed by historical linguistics, and by re-estimating the age of the Austronesian expansion using only the most robust calibrations. The results show that the Austronesian language phylogenies are highly congruent with the traditional subgroupings...

In this dissertation, I investigate a number of interrelated developments affecting the morphosyntax of nouns in Cappadocian Greek. I specifically focus on the development of differential object marking, the loss of grammatical gender distinctions, and the neuterisation of noun inflection. My aim is to provide a diachronic account of the innovations that Cappadocian has undergone in the three domains mentioned above. !ll the innovations examined in this study have the effect of rendering the morphology and syntax of nouns in Cappadocian more like that of neuters. On account of the historical and sociolinguistic circumstances in which Cappadocian developed as well as of the superficial similarity of their outcomes to equivalent structures in Turkish, previous research has overwhelmingly treated the Cappadocian developments as instances of contact-induced change that resulted from the influence of Turkish. In this study, I examine the Cappadocian innovations from a language-internal point of view and in comparison with parallel developments attested in the other Modern Greek dialects of Asia Minor, namely Pontic, Rumeic, Pharasiot and Silliot. My comparative analysis of a wide range of dialect-internal, cross-dialectal and cross-linguistic typological evidence shows that language contact with Turkish can be identified as the main cause of change only in the case of differential object marking. On the other hand...

Despite the platitude that analytic philosophy is deeply concerned with language, philosophers of science have paid little attention to methodological issues that arise within historical linguistics. I broach this topic by arguing that many inferences in historical linguistics conform to Reichenbach's common cause principle (CCP). Although the scope of CCP is narrower than many have thought, inferences about the genealogies of languages are particularly apt for reconstruction using CCP. Quantitative approaches to language comparison are readily understood as methods for detecting the correlations that serve as premises for common cause inferences, and potential sources of error in historical linguistics correspond to well-known limitations of CCP.

Nas conclusões, propõe-se que o Princípio de projeção reúnetodas as manifestações linguísticas de MOVIMENTO.; Since the nineteen-eighties onwards, Historical Linguistics has been given fresh attention by Brazilian linguists. This text aims to point out new trends in current diachronic research. To this end, the text is divided into three sections: key theoretical developments in Historical Linguistics, complex systems and Historical Linguistics, the representation of the cognitive category MOTION in the history of the Portuguese language. In the conclusion, a Principle of projection has been proposed in order to put together different manifestations of MOTION.

The confluence between philology and computation in Portuguese historical linguistics, in process since the 1990s, is now an expanding horizon, making this a good moment for the reflection about the transformations produced by computational technologies on traditional philological and linguistic work . This paper proposes to reflect on this, starting with a detailed exploration of the text technologies used in the Tycho Brahe Corpus of Historical Portuguese, and examining the combinations of philological, linguistic and computational procedures involved in its construction. We approach electronic corpora as databases about texts, rather than collections of texts; and this allows us to envisage the particularities involved in work with digital media in philology and linguistics. We try to start debate on the challenges and perspectives opened to these fields in Brazil, after the considerations on the pioneer projects described.; O processo de aproximação entre o campo filológico e o campo computacional nos estudos históricos da língua portuguesa, observado desde os anos 1990, configura hoje um horizonte em franca expansão,tornando oportunas as reflexões sobre as transformações produzidas pelo o tratamento computacional na tradição do trabalho filológico e linguístico.

This work analyzes the cultural history of the Tukanoan family by attempting the reconstruction of 107 words related to the material culture shared by Amazonian peoples, especially in the Northwest Amazon. The analysis of the terminological system of words that can be reconstructed to Proto-Tukanoan, as well as words that can only be reconstructed to intermediate proto-languages or words that cannot be reconstructed at all allows for a set of cultural inferences regarding the historic evolution of Tukanoan family, which is accomplished along a dialogue with the ethnographic and archeological literature of the Northwest Amazon, as well as following in general terms the proposals for linking Historical Linguistics and Archaeology in different parts of the globe. It is concluded that there was a process of cultural differentiation between the two main branches of the Tukanoan family, as the reflex of distinct integration of each branch in different regional subsystems in the Northwest Amazon.

Bora and Muinane are two neighboring, relatively closely related languages spoken in the North-West Amazon. Whether these two languages can be shown to be genealogically related to other languages is still debated. In this paper, we provide a reconstruction of 416 proto Bora-Muinane word forms and of the proto Bora-Muinane phonological system. Our reconstruction confirms an earlier reconstruction by Aschmann (1993), but also differs from it in some important respects. We firmly establish sound changes in Bora and Muinane based on extensive data and first-hand knowledge of the languages involved. The reconstructed proto Bora-Muinane forms presented here provide a sound basis for re-evaluating the genealogical relationship of Bora-Muinane with Witoto and Ocaina, which was proposed by Aschmann (1993), and opens the possibility to search for genealogical relations with other languages. Keywords: Historical linguistics;Bora; Muinane; Boran family; Northwest Amazonia.

The goal of this paper is twofold: on the one hand, we aim at clarifying aspects of the phonology and morphology of Akroá and Xakriabá, to the extent that these are discernible on the basis of both the interpretation of XIX century vocabulary lists collected by explorers and the comparison with their closest extant relatives, the Xavante and Xerente languages. On the other hand, we show that by means of this comparison our knowledge of the relations among these four languages which are taken to form the central branch of the Jê linguistic family, is greatly advanced, contributing in this way to the historical investigation of the Jê languages at large.O presente estudo tem um objetivo duploc: Por un lado, buscamos estabelecer aspectos da fonologia e da morfologia das línguas Akroá e Xakriabá, na medida em que essa informação possa ser extraida da análise de listas vocabulares coletadas por viajantes no século XIX e, principalmente, pela comparação desses dados com aqueles disponíveis para o Xavante e o Xerente.
