This paper presents a new methodology to estimate unbalanced harmonic distortions in a power system, based on measurements of a limited number of given sites. The algorithm utilizes evolutionary strategies (ES), a development branch of evolutionary algorithms. The problem solving algorithm herein proposed makes use of data from various power quality meters, which can either be synchronized by high technology GPS devices or by using information from a fundamental frequency load flow, what makes the overall power quality monitoring system much less costly. The ES based harmonic estimation model is applied to a 14 bus network to compare its performance to a conventional Monte Carlo approach. It is also applied to a 50 bus subtransmission network in order to compare the three-phase and single-phase approaches as well as the robustness of the proposed method. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents a new methodology to estimate harmonic distortions in a power system, based on measurements of a limited number of given sites. The algorithm utilizes evolutionary strategies (ES), a development branch of evolutionary algorithms. The main advantage in using such a technique relies upon its modeling facilities as well as its potential to solve fairly complex problems. The problem-solving algorithm herein proposed makes use of data from various power-quality (PQ) meters, which can either be synchronized by high technology global positioning system devices or by using information from a fundamental frequency load flow. This second approach makes the overall PQ monitoring system much less costly. The algorithm is applied to an IEEE test network, for which sensitivity analysis is performed to determine how the parameters of the ES can be selected so that the algorithm performs in an effective way. Case studies show fairly promising results and the robustness of the proposed method.

The harmonic distortion (HD) exhibited by un-strained and biaxially strained fin-shaped field-effect transistors operating in saturation as single-transistor amplifiers has been investigated for devices with different channel lengths L and fin widths W(fin). This work investigates the harmonic distortion (HD) in 2-MOS balanced structures composed of triple gate FinFETs. HD has been evaluated through the determination of the third-order harmonic distortion (HD3), since this represents the major non-linearity source in balanced structures. The 2-MOS structures with devices of different channel lengths (L) and fin widths (W(fin)) have been studied operating in the linear region as tunable resistors. The analysis was performed as a function of the gate voltage, aiming to verify the correlation between operation bias and HD3. The physical origins of the non-linearities have been investigated and are pointed out. Being a resistive circuit, the 2-MOS structure is generally projected for a targeted on-resistance, which has also been evaluated in terms of HD3. The impact of the application of biaxial strain has been studied for FinFETs of different dimensions. It has been noted that HD3 reduces with the increase of the gate bias for all the devices and this reduction is more pronounced both in narrower and in longer devices. Also, the presence of strain slightly diminishes the non-linearity at a similar bias. However, a drawback associated with the use of strain engineering consists in a significant reduction of the on-resistance with respect to unstrained devices. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. In this work we present an analysis of harmonic distortion (HD) in graded-channel (GC) gate-all-a round (GAA) devices operating in saturation region for analog applications. The study has been performed through device characterization and two-dimensional process and device simulations. The overall study has been done on the total and third order HDs. When applied in the saturation regime as an amplifier, the GC outperforms conventional GAA transistors presenting simultaneously higher transconductance, lower drain output conductance and more than 15 dB improved linearity. The influence of channel length reduction on the H D is also analyzed. Although slight linearity degradation is observed in both the conventional and the GC devices when reducing the channel length, the HD presented by the GC transistor is significantly lower than the one showed by conventional device for any Studied channel length. Esta tese discute a necessidade de monitorar, além das tensões eficazes, os desequilíbrios de freqüência fundamental e as distorções harmônicas de tensão. Apresenta uma forma alternativa para obter os parâmetros de desequilíbrios de freqüência fundamental e de distorções harmônicas a partir da representação dos valores instantâneos no sistema de eixos (DQ) e norma Euclidiana instantânea (NEI). Como contribuição principal, o trabalho propõe obter um parâmetro de qualidade que combina os parâmetros de desequilíbrio e de distorção harmônica. A representatividade dos parâmetros de qualidade é analisada a partir de resultados de elevações de temperatura dos enrolamentos de um motor de indução obtidas de 60 horas de testes. Discute-se que uma das vantagens de obter um parâmetro de qualidade de tensão que combine os efeitos de desequilíbrios de freqüência fundamental e distorções harmônicas é reduzir o número de parâmetros que devem ser monitorados, simplificando o processo de fiscalização que os órgãos reguladores procuram implantar. Esta teste de doutorado tem como objetivo o desenvolvimento de um algoritmo de Estimação de Estados de Distorções Harmônicas (EEDH) em Sistemas Elétricos de Potência. Embora o custo dos medidores de qualidade de energia tenha diminuído, ainda é inviável a utilização de medidores para a monitoração de todas as barras de um sistema elétrico real, pois o sistema de monitoração tornar-se-ia demasiadamente oneroso. Sendo assim, torna-se necessária à utilização de algoritmo capaz de estimar, a partir de um pequeno número de pontos de monitoração, os valores das distorções harmônicas em demais pontos do sistema. Para resolver o problema em estudo, propõe-se a utilização de algoritmo de Estratégias Evolutivas. Esta tese consiste em apresentar um método para localização e identificação de consumidores com alta contribuição para a distorção harmônica de tensão medida em subestações de sistemas de distribuição de energia elétrica. Cabe comentar que a etapa de localização visa obter uma lista das possíveis posições onde possa estar alocado o consumidor que possua cargas não lineares com grande consumo de potências harmônicas. Partindo-se desta lista, realiza-se a etapa de identificação, em que são estimadas as amplitudes de cada harmônica na posição selecionada. Por fim, um algoritmo para ajuste/sintonia do método de localização é empregado com o intuito de se realizar uma possível correção com relação à posição do consumidor. In this paper it is proposed a novel hybrid three-phase rectifier capable to achieve high input power factor (PF), and low total harmonic distortion in the input currents (THDI). The proposed hybrid high power rectifier is composed by a standard three-phase 6-pulses diode rectifier (Graetz bridge) with a parallel connection of single-phase Boost rectifiers in each three-phase rectifier leg. Such topology results in a structure capable of programming the input current waveform and providing conditions for obtaining high input power factor and low harmonic current distortion. In order to validate the proposed hybrid rectifier, this paper describes its principles of operation, with detailed experimental results and discussions on power rating of the required Boost converters as related to the desired total harmonic current distortion. It is demonstrated that only a fraction of the output power is processed through the Boost converters, making the proposed solution economically viable for very high power installations, with fast pay back of the investment. Moreover, retrofitting to existing installations is also feasible since the parallel path can be easily controlled by integration with the existing de-link. In the last 20 years immense efforts have been made to utilize renewable energy sources for electric power generation. This paper investigates some aspects of integration of the distributed generators into the low voltage distribution network. An assessment of impact of the distributed generators on the voltage and current harmonic distortion in the low voltage network is performed. Results obtained from a case study, using real-life low voltage network, are presented and discussed.

The quality of the supplied power by electricity utilities is regulated and of concern to the end user. Power quality disturbances include interruptions, sags, swells, transients and harmonic distortion. The instruments used to measure these disturbances have to satisfy minimum requirements set by international standards. In this paper, an analysis of multi-harmonic least-squares fitting algorithms applied to total harmonic distortion (THD) estimation is presented. The results from the different least-squares algorithms are compared with the results from the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) algorithm. The algorithms are assessed in the different testing states required by the standards.

Equipamentos mitigadores de harmônicos e compensadores de energia reativa têm sido bastante discutidos e aplicados nos últimos anos com sucesso nas mais variadas instalações comerciais e industriais, fomentados pela eliminação da tarifação por baixo fator de potência e por problemas advindos do aumento significativo de cargas não lineares conectadas a estes sistemas elétricos. Atualmente, diversos tipos de equipamentos que fazem à dupla função de redução do conteúdo harmônico e correção do fator de potência são aplicados, utilizando técnicas de simulação e estudos bem conhecidos (através de programas computacionais de fluxo de carga e fluxo harmônicos) visando garantir a resposta em campo mais adequada. Neste sentido, o trabalho proposto tem por objetivo mostrar uma comparação técnico-econômica entre os equipamentos mais utilizados como solução do fator de potência e de problemas com harmônicos, sendo eles: banco de capacitores, filtro harmônico passivo dessintonizado, filtro harmônico passivo sintonizado, filtro harmônico ativo e filtro harmônico híbrido. Harmonic distortion of a voltage waveform on a local distribution system may have many effects, such as: protective device malfunctions, medical equipment failures, and increased noise generation and bearing wear of rotating equipment. In the past these effects have been tolerated. Advances in semiconductor technology in the past two decades have produced devices that can handle large amounts of power efficiently and safely. These advances have led to an increased number of loads that contribute to the bus voltage distortion. These same advances that have made the distortion problem worse also have given rise to devices that can be used to actively correct the problem. Active Power Line Conditioners (APLC's) use voltage or current converters to improve harmonic distortion on local buses. APLCVs use information from current or power sensors that are spread throughout the distribution system in order to correct the voltage waveform distortion. These sensors are difficult and costly to install. This thesis presents an APLC that produces its distortion canceling signal using only bus voltage information, thus reducing the distribution sample points to one. Mechanical responses to pure-tone stimuli were recorded from the basilar membrane in the basal turn of the guinea-pig cochlea using a displacement-sensitive laser interferometer. The harmonic content of the responses was evaluated using Fourier analysis.Harmonic distortion products were observed in many of the basilar membrane responses. Response components locked to twice the frequency of the stimulus (i.e. 2F0) were the largest of the distortion products.The second harmonic responses showed a bimodal frequency distribution at low to moderate sound pressure levels: one peak occurred around the preparation's best or most sensitive frequency (i.e. when F0≈ 17 kHz), and another occurred around one-half of the best frequency (when F0≈ 8.5 kHz).The absolute levels of most distortion products increased progressively with increasing stimulus strength. When expressed with respect to the levels of the fundamental responses, however, the distortion levels usually decreased with increasing stimulus strength.The levels of the distortion decreased (in both absolute and relative terms) with deterioration in the physiological condition of the cochlea.Maximum second harmonic distortion levels amounted to ≈3.5 and ≈28 % of the fundamental responses to tones near and below the best frequency...

This paper presents a detailed study of the effect of the non-linear settling on the harmonic distortion of BandPass SD Modulators (BP-ΣΔMs) realized using Fully Differential (FD) SwItched-current (SI) circuits. Based on the analysis of building blocks, closed-form expressions are derived for the third-order intermodulation distortion of BP-ΣΔMs due to defective settling, on the one hand, and to the non-linearities of the sampling process, on the other. In this thesis, the problem of quantization noise 1s presented, and recent efforts 1n this area are reviewed. With the motivation for further Investigation Into the problem explained, the purpose of this thesis 1s stated to be the determination of peak harmonic distortion due to quantization for predominantly single frequency Inputs. Two cases were examined with pure sinusoid and sine wave plus Gaussian bandlimited white noise. The method used was to simulate the quantization process on the computer, and to use a Fast Fourier Transform algorithm to analyze the spectra of the quantized signals. For pure sinusoidal Inputs, the location of the peak harmonic distortion 1n the quantization noise spectrum was found to be very sensitive to the degree of loading of the quantizer. However the magnitude of the peak distortion when plotted as a function of the number of bits totally used by the Input was fitted very well with a straight line of slope -6dB/b1t. Moreover the largest component 1n the quantization noise spectrum was observed to be about 4dB above the average noise spectral density across the entire frequency band of observation. The addition of noise to the sine wave was anticipated to have a smoothing effect on the quantization noise spectrum. This phenomenon was observed for a specific set of Input noise samples but the results are not conclusive...

The output voltage of PWM power inverters shows harmonic distortion due to several causes; the main ones are the modulation algorithm, nonlinearities in the output filter, dead times, voltage drops across the switches and modulation of the dc bus voltage. The distortion is more evident when using low dc bus voltages. As a result, motors driven by these inverters have important torque pulsations. This work proposes to reduce the distortion produced by dead times and voltage drops across the switches using a simple algorithm that recalculates the width of each PWM pulse, while preserving the ideal area. By simulation, the THD was reduced from 18% to 0.29% in a single-phase inverter. The proposed algorithm only needs products and sums, so it is suitable for being implemented on a DSP with a very low processing load.

A methodology that is based on epidemiological analysis to assess risk factors and harmonic distortion incidence rate in a distribution network is proposed in this paper. The methodology analyzes the current harmonics emission risk at the PCC due to the connection of disturbing loads. These loads are modeled, and multiple loads connection scenarios are simulated using Monte Carlo Algorithms. From the simulation results, potential risk factors for critical harmonics indicators are identified, leading to a classification of the scenarios into groups of exposed or unexposed to risk factors. Finally, the incidence rate of harmonics is calculated for each load connection scenario and the risk of critical harmonics scenarios due to the exposure to risk factors is estimated.

The main purpose of active-filter based power-quality improvement problems is to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) and improve power factor (PF) as much as possible. However according to standards such as IEEE-519/IEC 61000, selective harmonic distortion (SHD) should be controlled. The conventional power factor correction techniques, assume the voltage source to be purely sinusoidal. But it is rarely true because nonlinear loads draw nonsinusoidal current from the source and that causes a nonsinusoidal voltage supply applied to the load. Under such conditions, any attempt to make the power factor unity by usual methods will result into a nonsinusoidal current, which increases total harmonic distortion (THD). On the other hand, harmonic free current does not necessarily result in unity power factor because of harmonics present in the voltage. Therefore, there is a trade-off between improvement in power factor and reduction of THD. One of the best solutions for this trade-off is to optimize PF while keeping THD and SHD into their prespecified limits. In this paper five methods including shuffled frog-leaping algorithm (SFL), conventional PSO (C-PSO), linearly decreasing inertia PSO (LDI-PSO), type 1 PSO (T1-PSO) and constant inertia PSO (CI-PSO) are employed in order to optimize PF while restricting the THD and SHD within the inertia constant. In this paper the response of a microgrid to the interfaced harmonic distorted load is analyzed. A new control algorithm to mitigate harmonic distortion is considered for distributed generators (DGs) and the effect of this control scheme is shown in the currents of DGs and other loads. The proposed control algorithm is compared with the conventional control strategy for harmonic distorted loads that is sinusoidal source current strategy based on the instantaneous reactive power (IRP) theory. PSCAD simulation results for IRP theory control show high total harmonic distortion (THD) and 3rd harmonic percent. In comparison inner voltage and current controllers of the proposed control scheme with their disturbance rejection capability, mitigate THD and 3rd harmonic percent. For this control system MATLAB simulation results are shown. By demonstrating the traditional sinusoidal source current control strategy based on IRP theory, it is concluded that ignoring the distortion power (D) in compensating process and also sub-harmonics of Pap crossing from the controller interior high pass filter cause the presence of some harmonic components and high THD.
