Coloured Petri nets and graphical simulation for the validation of a robotic cell in aircraft industry

This paper proposes a mixed validation approach based on coloured Petri nets and 3D graphic simulation for the design of supervisory systems in manufacturing cells with multiple robots. The coloured Petri net is used to model the cell behaviour at a high level of abstraction. It models the activities of each cell component and its coordination by a supervisory system. The graphical simulation is used to analyse and validate the cell behaviour in a 3D environment, allowing the detection of collisions and the calculation of process times. The motivation for this work comes from the aeronautic industry. The automation of a fuselage assembly process requires the integration of robots with other cell components such as metrological or vision systems. In this cell, the robot trajectories are defined by the supervisory system and results from the coordination of the cell components. The paper presents the application of the approach for an aircraft assembly cell under integration in Brazil. This case study shows the feasibility of the approach and supports the discussion of its main advantages and limits. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um programa visualizador de processos em aqüíferos intitulado VPA, como módulo integrante de um pa cote de programas computacionais aplicados ao gerenciamento de recursos hídricos subterrâneos denominado SPA (Simulação de Processos em Aqüí- feros). Esse visualizador foi desenvolvido para sistema operacional SuSE Linux, utilizando como ambientes gráficos o KDE e o GNOME. O ambiente de programação Glade 2 foi escolhido para programação e desenvolvimento do visualiza dor. Este ambiente de programação em C é distribuído nos âmbitos de open source development (GNU), e serve como complemento da interface gráfica com o usuário GUI (Graphic User Interfa ce). Em conjunto com esta linguagem de programa ção foi usado o Data Explorer IBM OpenDX, dis-tribuído também nos termos de open source development, como ferramenta para visualização de simulações em duas e três dimensões. Assim, é possível visualizar os resultados gera dos pela simulação de processos de escoamento de fluidos e transporte de poluentes no subsolo por meio dos módulos de pré e pós-processamento do pacote SPA, na forma de dados binários. A presente pesquisa faz parte de um trabalho que visa o desenvolvimento de um método de simulação computacional que permita fazer a avaliação da qualidade da imagem radiográfica de maneira rápida e completa e que não apresente os problemas dos métodos tradicionais disponíveis e usados atualmente. Neste trabalho foi desenvolvido um método que leva em consideração e simula os parâmetros importantes dos sistemas radiológicos tais como: o tamanho e a distribuição de intensidade do ponto focal, as condições geométricas de exposição, a heterogeneidade do campo, a distribuição angular dos raios X, a grade supressora, bem como o efeito Compton. O método de simulação computacional desenvolvido realiza o controle de qualidade da imagem para um objeto colocado em qualquer posição do campo de radiação. Nos últimos anos, vários esforços têm sido realizados para desenvolver ambientes de simulação mais amigáveis para seus usuários (modeladores e tomadores de decisões). Técnicas de computação gráfica tem sido largamente utilizadas na interface com o usuário, tanto para a apresentação dos resultados da simulação em pós-processamento ou durante a experimentação, como para a construção de modelos de simulação através de editores gráficos. Desta forma, vários estudos na área de simulação têm sido direcionados para ambientes que ofereçam facilidades para a modelagem e experimentação, trazendo novos conceitos como simulação interativa visual (VIS - Visual Interactive Simulation) e modelagem interativa visual (VIM - Visual Interactive Modeling). This paper deals with the usage of interactive simulations tools to serve as an oriented design tool for the lectures and laboratory experiments in the power electronics courses. A dynamic and interactive visualization of simulations for idealized converters in steady state are provided by the proposed educational tools, allowing students to acquire qualification in non-isolated DC-DC converters, without previous circuitry knowledge, either without the usage of sophisticated simulation packages. The interaction with proposed simulation tools can be accomplished by student using direct or graphic mode. In direct mode the parameters related with the design of converter can be inserted simply editing default values presented in textboxes, while in the graphic mode students interact indirectly with design information by manipulating visual widgets. In order to corroborate the proposed interactive simulation tools, comparisons of results from buck-boost and boost converters on proposed tools and a well-known simulator package with those on experimental evaluation from laboratory classes were presented. © 2009 IEEE.

We examine issues in the design of interactive computer graphic simulation programs for radiation treatment planning (RTP), as well as expert system programs that automate parts of the RTP process, in light of ten years of experience at designing, building and using such programs. An experiment in object-oriented design using standard Pascal shows that while some advantage is gained from the design, it is still difficult to achieve modularity and to integrate expert system components. A new design based on the Common LISP Object System (CLOS) is described. This series of designs for RTP software shows that this application benefits in specific ways from object-oriented design methods and appropriate languages and tools.

In this technical note we show the promise of using graphic processing units (GPUs) to accelerate simulations of electrical wave propagation in cardiac tissue, one of the more demanding computational problems in cardiology. We have found that the computational speed of two-dimensional (2D) tissue simulations with a single commercially available GPU is about 30 times faster than with a single 2.0 GHz Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Opteron processor. We have also simulated wave conduction in the three-dimensional (3D) anatomic heart with GPUs where we found the computational speed with a single GPU is 1.6 times slower than with a 32-central processing unit (CPU) Opteron cluster. However, a cluster with two or four GPUs is faster than the CPU-based cluster. These results demonstrate that a commodity personal computer is able to perform a whole heart simulation of electrical wave conduction within times that enable the investigators to interact more easily with their simulations.

For more than 2,500 years, surgical teaching has been based on the so called "see one, do one, teach one" paradigm, in which the surgical trainee learns by operating on patients under close supervision of peers and superiors. However, higher demands on the quality of patient care and rising malpractice costs have made it increasingly risky to train on patients. Minimally invasive surgery, in particular, has made it more difficult for an instructor to demonstrate the required manual skills. It has been recognized that, similar to flight simulators for pilots, virtual reality (VR) based surgical simulators promise a safer and more comprehensive way to train manual skills of medical personnel in general and surgeons in particular. One of the major challenges in the development of VR-based surgical trainers is the real-time and realistic simulation of interactions between surgical instruments and biological tissues. The flow assurance has become one of the topics of greatest interest in the oil industry, mainly due to production and transportation of oil in regions with extreme temperature and pressure. In these operations the wax deposition is a commonly problem in flow of paraffinic oils, causing the rising costs of the process, due to increased energy cost of pumping, decreased production, increased pressure on the line and risk of blockage of the pipeline. In order to describe the behavior of the wax deposition phenomena in turbulent flow of paraffinic oils, under different operations conditions, in this work we developed a simulator with easy interface. Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.; The Computer Science Department at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California has developed a low-cost real-time interactive network based simulation system, known as NPSNET, that uses Silicon Graphics workstations. NPSNET has used non-standard protocols which constrains its participation in distributed simulation. DIS specifies standard protocols and is emerging as the international standard for distributed simulation. This research focused on the development of a robust, high-performance implementation of the DIS Version 2.0.3 protocol to support graphic simulation systems (e.g. NPSNET). The challenge was to comply with the standard and minimize network latency thereby maintaining the time and space coherence of distributed simulations. The resulting DIS Network Library consists of an application program interface (API) to low level network routines, a host of network utilities, and a network harness that takes advantage of multiprocessor workstations. The library was successfully tested on our local network and two configurations of a T-I based internet, the Defense Simulation Internet (DSI), with the Air Force Institute of Technology and Advanced Research Projects Agency. The testing confirmed that the semantics and syntax of the DIS protocol is properly implemented and the latency incurred by the network does not adversely effect the simulation application.

We show how to accelerate relativistic hydrodynamics simulations using graphic cards (graphic processing units, GPUs). These improvements are of highest relevance e.g. to the field of high-energetic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC where (ideal and dissipative) relativistic hydrodynamics is used to calculate the evolution of hot and dense QCD matter. The results reported here are based on the Sharp And Smooth Transport Algorithm (SHASTA), which is employed in many hydrodynamical models and hybrid simulation packages, e.g. the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model (UrQMD). We have redesigned the SHASTA using the OpenCL computing framework to work on accelerators like graphic processing units (GPUs) as well as on multi-core processors. MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) is an experiment dedicated to search for the $\mu^+ \rightarrow e^+\gamma$ decay that is strongly suppressed in the Standard Model but predicted in several Super Symmetric extensions of it at an accessible rate. MEG is a small-size experiment ($\approx 50-60$ physicists at any time) with a life span of about 10 years. The limited human resource available, in particular in the core offline group, emphasized the importance of reusing software and exploiting existing expertise. Great care has been devoted to provide a simple system that hides implementation details to the average programmer. That allowed many members of the collaboration to contribute to the development of the software of the experiment with limited programming skill. The offline software is based on two frameworks: {\bf REM} in FORTRAN 77 used for the event generation and detector simulation package {\bf GEM}, based on GEANT 3, and {\bf ROME} in C++ used in the readout simulation {\bf Bartender} and in the reconstruction and analysis program {\bf Analyzer}. 2nd International Workshop on Remote Sensing of Vegetation Fluorescence, 17-19 Nov. 2004, Montreal, Canada; This paper reports on the status of the FluorMODgui, a Graphic User Interface (GUI) software package developed within the frame of the FluorMOD project "Development of a Vegetation Fluorescence Canopy Model". The study was launched in 2002 by the European Space Agency to advance the science of vegetation fluorescence simulation through the development and integration of leaf and canopy fluorescence models based on physical methods. The FluorMODgui enables simulation of leaf and canopy reflectance with the effects of chlorophyll fluorescence, running the leaf and canopy models (dubbed FluorMODleaf and FluorSAIL) independently, as well as through a coupling scheme. Inputs for the FluoMODleaf layer are N (number of leaf layers, as in PROSPECT), Cab (chlorophyll a+b content), Cw (water equivalent thickness), Cm (dry matter content), Fi (fluorescence quantum efficiency), T (temperature), S (species type), and Sto (stoichiometry). The FluorMODgui Graphic User Interface (GUI) software package developed within the frame of the FluorMOD project Development of a Vegetation Fluorescence Canopy Model is presented in this manuscript. The FluorMOD project was launched in 2002 by the European Space Agency (ESA) to advance the science of vegetation fluorescence simulation through the development and integration of leaf and canopy fluorescence models based on physical methods. The design of airborne or space missions dedicated to the measurement of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence using remote-sensing instruments require physical methods for quantitative feasibility analysis and sensor specification studies. The FluorMODgui model developed as part of this project is designed to simulate the effects of chlorophyll fluorescence at leaf and canopy levels using atmospheric inputs, running the leaf model, FluorMODleaf, and the canopy model, FluorSAIL, independently, through a coupling scheme, and by a multiple iteration protocol to simulate changes in the viewing geometry and atmospheric characteristics. In this article we set out a typology of the audiovisual graphic design used by the principal Spanish television stations. The article contains a study of graphics in television news, in which we review the principal functions of graphics and their most common use, to fill certain news deficits. The objective of this research is to establish certain properties for each type of graphic for semantic news searches. To this end, we investigate those which have their own identity and specific characteristics, while verifying that there are no others, though these can be found in combined or mixed forms. This unprecedented typology makes distinctions in function of the languages used in the graphic, their different physical appearances and characteristics and the process of production of information, which is ever more frequently supported by and developed with digital simulation technologies. In addition to serving as a documentary basis for journalists and graphic designers, this typology establishes a qualitative indication related to the objectives of each graphic in a news article.
