O presente trabalho busca contribuir para a compreensão dos vínculos entre elementos culturais locais e a cultura científica na escola, investigando, junto a professores de ciências de um contexto teuto-brasileiro, como a cultura local e a cultura científica se fazem presentes e se relacionam em suas representações sobre os processos de ensino e aprendizagem em ciências. O texto traz uma apresentação de nuances históricas da colonização teuto-brasileira católica no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, abordando especialmente a relação do colonizador com a escola, a igreja e o convívio em comunidade. A cultura científica também é alvo de discussão, a partir de uma reflexão acerca do amplo leque de elementos que abarca e do complexo quadro que enfrenta para sua difusão no Brasil. Na pesquisa de campo, é investigado o cotidiano da educação, em especial, o ensino de ciências, no município de Salvador das Missões, RS, anteriormente integrante da Colônia Sêrro Azul, colonizada desde 1902. Este estudo consiste numa reflexão acerca da identidade cultural no contexto contemporâneo, mais especificamente, da cultura brasileira teuto-gaúcha e da sua representação na literatura sul-rio-grandense contemporânea. Para tanto, realizou-se um levantamento de obras da literatura gaúcha mais recente que focalizam os imigrantes e descendentes alemães como personagens centrais da narrativa, dentre as quais se selecionou um corpus constituído pelos livros A asa esquerda do anjo (1981), de Lya Luft, e Valsa para Bruno Stein (1986), de Charles Kiefer. A partir da análise realizada, percebeu-se que a cultura teuto-gaúcha é representada através de uma ambigüidade marcante na vida dos protagonistas, oriunda do entre-lugar de sua condição intervalar, constituída pela herança cultural alemã e pela vivência no contexto brasileiro. De um modo geral, a presença da cultura teuto-gaúcha pode ser notada no emprego da língua alemã, na rigidez dos costumes e comportamentos familiares, no preconceito interétnico e de gênero, na culinária e na religião defendida e posteriormente abandonada (no caso de Bruno Stein). A partir do estudo de caso da subdisciplina Cultura alemã, argumenta-se que os Estudos de Cultura se definem como campo de estudos metadisciplinar e organizado de forma temática, respondendo à exigência de complexidade das sociedades contemporâneas e demonstrando a relevância das Humanidades para a produção de sentido nas sociedades democráticas.; The article discusses Culture Studies as a field of study negotiating its methods and paradigms vis-a-vis the social oriented Cultural Studies, as well as the hermeneutic tradition of the Kulturwissenschaften. The methodology used is the Cultural Standard Method, an innovative methodology that allows identifying with much more detail and rigor the cultural differences between two cultures. The instrument used is the narrative interview, a kind of open interviews in which interviewees, which are all Portuguese with an extensive working experience in Germany, present, by the order they consider more significant in terms of culture shock, the stories of incidents that occurred during their stay in Germany, which represent critical incidents that may be positive or negative. Critical incidents, analyzed with base on the process "Qualitative Content Analysis" allow to identify, at the end of the process, the relative cultural standards that result from the comparison between two cultures, in this case German and Portuguese culture. Die Zielsetzung der vorliegenden Arbeit bestand darin, eine Strukturierung bedeutender Forschungsansätze vorzunehmen, ihre Vor- und Nachteile kritisch zu reflektieren und aufgrund dessen eine Methode hervorzuheben, die es ermöglichen würde, kulturelle Merkmale differenziert und möglichst ganzheitlich zu erfassen sowie den Teilnehmern an interkulturellen Begegnungssituationen praktische Hilfe hinsichtlich der Bewältigung interkultureller Herausforderungen anzubieten. Der hervorgehobene Ansatz sollte also sowohl den theoretischen und empirischen Anforderungen an Kulturvergleich als auch den methodisch-didaktischen Anforderungen an Vermittlung interkultureller Handlungskompetenz Rechnung tragen. Im 1. Kapitel der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die grundlegenden Elemente und das Einflussspektrum nationaler Kulturen analysiert. Es wird begründet, dass die Nationalkultur trotz eines ununterbrochen Wandels und einer komplexen Struktur die wichtigste identitätsstiftende Determinante darstellt. This study examines irony predominantly as it appears in German spontaneous spoken discourse. The main data employed for the study are four conversational texts, each of which has a different irony content. In Chapter One I survey the literature on irony in the fields of rhetoric, literature, and literary criticism, as well as its treatment in linguistic frameworks (based on Austin 1962/1975, Searle 1969). I then compare the function and use of irony in German spontaneous conversation with counterparts in pre-composed conversation. In Chapter Three I discuss some uses of irony in non-Western cultures as contrasted with the functions of irony in modern German culture. Irony emerges as a mode of experience that is closely related to the culture of its inception. This aspect of irony is particularly evident in the difficulties encountered in the internal translation (paraphrase) of ironic discourse (pre-composed as well as spontaneous) or translation from one language or culture to another. In Chapter Four I examine difficulties in translation of instances of irony. Finally, in Chapter Five I distinguish irony from related tropes and concepts. Irony employs a feature of quality, which has usually been associated with opposition. I have expanded the concept of opposition and added the feature of multilayeredness as a necessary condition. Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited; There has been much speculation and editorializing over the deterioration of trans-Atlantic relations, specifically between the United States and Germany, primarily as a result of the US-led war against Iraq beginning in March 2003. What can account for this so-called trans-Atlantic rift and the unhealthy US-German relationship of late? This thesis argues that this deterioration in trans-Atlantic relations stems from a profound misunderstanding of strategic culture. Specifically, this thesis takes the position that a failure to appropriately understand what Germany's unique strategic culture has been a leading cause of the present uncomfortable relationship between the United States and Germany. This thesis shows how a nation's values, beliefs, and preconceptions, can have a powerful influence upon foreign and security policy decisions. Seit es menschliche Kulturgeschichte gibt, gibt es Versuche, den Tyrannen Zeit zu begreifen, ihn zu bekämpfen. Der Tempuswechsel des Jahres 2000 war erneut Anlaß eines intensiven Nachdenkens über die Zeit. Die Moderne ist auf die Zeit und Bemühungen um ihr Verständnis, ihre Gestaltung, ihre Überwindung fixiert. Betrachtet man all die Diskurse über die Zeit, so wird deutlich, daß seit der Aufklärung das Leiden am Tyrannen 'Zeit' eine neue Qualität und Quantität angenommen hat, die in der Gegenwart kulminiert und spezifische Merkmale der Zeitdiskurse konstituiert - wobei rasch deutlich wird, dass allem Reden über die Zeit zum Trotz die Zeit weiter als 'große Unbekannte' betrachtet werden muß, die noch von keiner Disziplin, insbesondere aber auch nicht von der Germanistik ausreichend aufgearbeitet wurde. O tema do presente estudo é a teoria da cultura, tal qual formulada pelo filósofo e sociólogo alemão Georg Simmel (1858-1918) em diferentes momentos de sua produção teórica. O estudo toma por objeto um determinado recorte bibliográfico em meio à obra do autor, composto de textos que vão de 1889 a 1911, fundado no entendimento de que essas várias versões dadas por Simmel à teoria da cultura podem ser melhor compreendidas separadas em três momentos: (1) Nas primeira formulações que abordaremos a cultura não é a temática central, mas aparece subordinada à discussão sobre o papel do dinheiro na modernidade. Tal debate parte de uma discussão do papel dos meios - o dinheiro é o meio por excelência, na medida em que funciona como mediador universal para a obtenção dos mais variados fins - mobilizados em vista de fins mais complexos; a cultura aparece aí tematizada como resultado do aprofundamento dessa séries teleológicas. This study focuses on stereotypes about Germany, its culture and people, held by learners of German in a big public university in Malaysia. It examines not only the stereotypical representations of the target language country but also assesses its favourability and salience, which has not been done previously. The findings revealed that the students' stereotypes about Germany were varied and diverse. Also, they were overwhelmingly positive. The top three salient categories of images about Germany were related to technology, famous personalities - for the most part football players and scientists - and cars. The findings also indicated that very few references had been made to German culture and to its great cultural figures. The results of the present study suggest that students could benefit from a wider and deeper exposure to German culture in the language classroom.

It is received wisdom that Britain and France played the leading role in overseas expansion in the eighteenth century while the German lands lacked both a central political authority and colonies of their own. We know from the work of scholars such as Susanne Zantop that German intellectuals were fascinated by encounters with non-European cultures, and German genres of travel writing, popular drama, and the philosophy of history all manifest an obsession with thinking about forms of cultural difference. In many cases, such efforts are wrought with ambivalence. The German world traveler Georg Forster is torn between the passionate admiration for a paradise-like Tahiti and the judgment of Tahiti as uncivilized. August von Kotzebue, Germany's most popular playwright around 1800, wrote dramas set in the New World and other exotic locales. In his Bruder Moritz (1791, Brother Moritz), the protagonist seeks to educate the child-like Arabs at the same time as he criticizes his aunt's racial condescension as lacking empathy. In Johann Gottfried Herder's philosophy of history, sympathy for the slaves in European colonies is accompanied by a belief in European cultural superiority. In all these examples, there is more at stake than the fantasies of German colonial rule that Zantop called our attention to a decade ago. My dissertation targets precisely the equivocal nature of the German colonial imagination around 1800 and suggests a different reading strategy.

Upon the outbreak of the American Civil War, German-Americans took up arms in defense of their adopted country. The German-American community in 1861 was incredibly diverse, and notions of shared German identity were secondary to religious, regional, and other divisions. Although widely respected by Anglo-Americans because of a perception that they were well-suited for assimilation and enjoyed a generally high level of education and economic success, German-Americans were also marginalized by overriding nativist tendencies. In response to these challenges, German-American Civil War veterans constructed the image of a “freedom-loving German.” Mythologized as firm abolitionists and unwavering supporters of the Republican Party, this model took hold among many Germans as an ethnic identifier following the Civil War. This thesis examines the development of the freedom-loving German through experience of the 20th New York Infantry Regiment. After focusing on the stakes German-American soldiers attached to their service at the outset of the war, this thesis traces the development of a pluralistic brand of patriotism which German-Americans developed during the Gilded Age.
