A Arqueologia investiga os diferentes processos de constituição, funcionamento e transformação ocorridos nos sistemas sócio-culturais de populações humanas, desde os períodos mais recuados até os dias atuais. A investigação arqueológica é feita por meio de procedimentos técnicos e metodológicos já consagrados, utilizando-se da prática interdisciplinar e do aproveitamento, cada vez mais crescente, de recursos tecnológicos de domínio científico. A introdução dos sistemas de informação geográfica (SIG) como uma ferramenta de análise no âmbito da arqueologia brasileira é algo recente. A literatura mostra que em outros países o uso de tecnologia é parte da rotina, envolvendo aspectos locais, regionais e de gerenciamento do patrimônio. Neste trabalho é proposto o uso do SIG como um instrumento de devolução do conhecimento arqueológico, de modo a funcionar como um fator de inclusão social. Para isso é feito um estudo sobre os conceitos envolvidos na tecnologia de SIG e uma análise da problemática na construção de SIGs preditivos em função da precariedade da cartografia nacional. A presente pesquisa propôs o desenvolvimento e a aplicação de um web-GIS interativo alimentado por usuários visando ao mapeamento do risco de inundações por meio da coleta de dados de ameaça, exposição e vulnerabilidade percebidos pela população. Foi também estimado o risco de inundação a partir de uma expressão de indicadores propostos por Mendiondo (2008). As duas metodologias foram aplicadas em sub-bacias urbanas da cidade de São Carlos. Foram realizadas entrevistas com a população da cidade para coletar dados de percepção de risco, enquanto se desenvolvia o web-GIS, para o qual, uma vez terminado, foram transferidos os referidos dados online. O portal se mostrou uma ferramenta de uso simples e confiável. As estimativas de risco calculadas por meio da expressão citada levaram a concluir que as sub-bacias com maior risco de inundação são as dos córregos Tijuco Preto e Medeiros. Entretanto, o risco estimado a partir da análise de percepção evidenciou as sub-bacias Gregório e Santa Maria Madalena como as de maior risco de inundação. Este artigo investiga a qualidade estética de campos visuais a partir das salas de unidades habitacionais em conjuntos para população de baixa renda. É verificada a universalidade de resultados já obtidos em outros contextos urbanos, incluindo a importância das vistas e de seus elementos constituintes para residentes de habitação social, e a percepção da qualidade estética das vistas a partir das salas de suas moradias. Com o Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG), é desenvolvido um método que otimiza a descrição e análise dos campos visuais, considerando as suas características conforme as suas diferentes profundidades. Em 12 conjuntos habitacionais na região metropolitana de Porto Alegre, foram coletados dados por meio de métodos qualitativos e quantitativos, tais como entrevistas, levantamentos físicos e questionários aplicados a um total de 374 unidades habitacionais. A análise dos dados incluiu o uso de testes estatísticos não paramétricos, tais como Kruskal-Wallis e Spearman, além da análise pelo SIG. The objective of the research work summarized in this paper was to develop a method to assess, concerning its functional and performance characteristics, GIS software applied to transportation planning (the so-called GIS-T packages). Three computer packages were compared with the developed procedure, which focuses on several characteristics: descriptive aspects (e.g., learning time and customization possibilities, among others), basic GIS operational characteristics, advanced GIS features, and transportation planning routines. In order to conduct a more effective analysis of their potential as a transportation planning tool they were all applied for finding a solution of a problem involving the calculation of a simple, straightforward accessibility measure. The results found suggest that all three systems comply with the minimum configuration desired for GIS software. However, only two of them fit in the GIS-T category, since the third one did not supply the main necessary tools to solve the specific transportation problem proposed.

For this reason, officials and environmental managers are in need of suitable tools for visualization, manipulation and analysis of environmental data. Environmental concerns in Europe have encouraged the European Environmental Agency (EEA) to create the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (E-PRTR). The E-PRTR is vital and valuable because society will benefit if the data are used to improve monitoring and consequently advance environmental management. However, the data are not accessible in an interoperable way, which complicates their use and does not allow for a contribution to environmental monitoring. The progress of technology has made the measurement of air quality and the simulation of complex air pollution models both feasible and cost-effective. However, there is a long way to go in terms of facilitating widespread access to the data and models, and linking the monitoring of trace gases with specific urban activities and land use that might be controllable. As part of a NASA-funded project, we are working with scientists and engineers to design and test a distributed GIS infrastructure for studying such "urban respiration" phenomena. Measurements of trace gases within a metropolitan area (from mobile and fixed instruments) are geo-referenced, time-stamped, and stored in a relational database server (Oracle). GIS services (using ArcInfo and ArcView) are connected to the database so that subsets of the trace gas measurements can be extracted and converted on-the-fly into GIS data layers. These subsets (by location, date, and time-of-day) can be displayed and cross-referenced with other layers such as weather conditions, land use and cover, topography, hydrography, demography, and congestion levels of road networks. In the last decades there has been an increasing interest in the optimization of water distribution networks projects (LANSEY, 2006). This is the result of an urgent need to save public money, and especially to make good use of water, this precious resource, scarce and inaccessible in many parts of the world. In this scenario, many optimization routines of water distribution networks have been used. Modelling of hydrosystems is of increasing demand in fields of water and environmental research and basically includes modelling of surface water and groundwater flow. Due to the limitation of available data and the complexity of geo-systems themselves in most modelling tasks, Geographical Information System (GIS) is taken as a useful tool due to the ability to store diverse kinds of hydrogeological information in a common understandable structure combined with its capabilities. The GIS data are served as the input parameters for the numerical modelling. Modern GIS , not yet based on a real 3D spatial representation, focus on 2 and 2.5 dimensions to represent surface and groundwater system. The construction of 3D model is challenging and of vital importance in order to accurately simulate hydrodynamic flow. As society becomes increasingly spatially enabled, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) will evolve, and geographical information will be embedded in most information applications and services that society uses. This trend presents many opportunities and challenges. It means GIS technologies will facilitate ¿more¿ by becoming `less`. As the general use of GIS increases, the visible appearance of GIS decreases, as it becomes an integrated part of organisational and societal information systems. The trend is for GIS to move from a multi-use tool for project and departmental systems, to specific product systems for multiple users, multiple applications and multiple purposes. These new systems are not all technically GIS, but are systems with embedded geographic knowledge, and the data and tools to capitalise upon the capabilities and to facilitate distribution. This paper describes the delivery of a Geographic Information System (GIS) product through the Internet for primary health care services provided at general medical practices in the State of Victoria, Australia. The paper details a collaborative research project, the principal aim of which was to develop a methodology for creating a GIS as a decision support system, for more effective use of information about population and health services at a given location. The methodology employed is based on the ability of a GIS to establish interrelationships between a combination of health, geographic, and demographic data. An overview of GIS as a technology that allows geospatial data to be analyzed, displayed, and queried is given. The results of the project can be demonstrated through a live presentation, detailing specific and generic reasons for the choice of the Internet as the preferred delivery mechanism. The paper concludes with the identification of important issues related to the research and use of the World Wide Web for Geographic Information Systems and Health.

Así, este trabajo trata de explorar las aportaciones que los SIG pueden hacer para el enriquecimiento de los estudios aplicados a los Riesgos Naturales. Los Sistemas de Información Geográfica son una potente herramienta que permite almacenar, editar, gestionar y analizar información de carácter geográfico y, además, elaborar cartografía representativa que puede ser útil para una mejor comprensión de un determinado hecho. El empleo de esta tecnología para el estudio y gestión del medio natural supone un factor de desarrollo importante que contribuye a que la toma de decisiones en esta materia sea la adecuada. Although Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been recognised as the most advanced technology for the management of geospatial information, they are still unable to efficiently manage the temporal dimension. Originally this problem affeeted only the study and analysis of highly dynamic phenomena. Today's expansion of GIS technology, the ease to acquire and store geospatial data and the increased capacity of computing technologies to managc large amounl of data have contributed lo the propagation of this problem across the whole geospatial seclor. Neste trabalho, buscou-se o desenvolvimento e adequação de técnicas de análise morfométrica em Sistemas de Informações Geográficas. Como base de trabalho, foram utilizados os programas livres GRASS-GIS e a linguagem estatística R. Os parâmetros morfométricos estudados foram hipsometria, declividade, orientação de vertentes, perfis em varredura, densidade de lineamentos e de drenagem, rugosidade de relevo, isobases e gradiente hidráulico. A área de estudo localiza-se na borda leste do Quadrilátero Ferrífero (MG), e possui unidades geomorfológicas distintas: um relevo montanhoso a oeste (Serra do Caraça), separado por uma escarpa de centenas de metros de terrenos caracterizados por dissecação fluvial, que abrigam em sua porção central, um planalto sustentado por conglomerados ferruginosos cenozóicos. O elemento principal da análise morfométrica é o Modelo Numérico de Terreno (MDT), que pode ser interpolado a partir de curvas de nível ou de pontos cotados. Recent scientific research has demonstrated the multitude of ecosystem services and functions provided by wetlands. Despite the astronomical cost that would be required to replace these vital services with manmade mechanisms, humans have a long history of filling and destroying wetlands for development. Recent decades have seen wetland protection improve under the aegis of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA). The CWA requires compensatory mitigation for wetlands destroyed during development, but specific mitigation requirements remain vague and many projects continue to fail. Developing better wetland mitigation site selection would provide improvements to mitigation without requiring a CWA amendment. Sites have traditionally been chosen based on geographic or monetary convenience. This study explores an increasingly popular method of selection: GIS prioritizations. GIS prioritizations can increase the efficiency, repeatability, and transparency of site selection. This project analyzes a case study in Cook Inlet, Alaska utilizing a GIS prioritization to locate high quality mitigation lands to compensate for a bridge proposed by the Knik Arm Bridge and Toll Authority. The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) has permeated almost every field in the engineering, natural and social sciences, offering accurate, efficient, reproducible methods for collecting, viewing and analysing spatial data. GIS do not inherently have all the hydrological simulation capabilities that complex hydrological models do, but are used to determine many of the catchment parameters that hydrological models or design flood estimation methods require. The purpose of this study was to perform catchment parameter analysis using GIS applications available in the ArcGIS TM environment. The paper will focus on the deployment of special GIS spatial modelling tools versus conventional manual methods used in conjunction with standard GIS tools to estimate typical catchment parameters, e.g. area, average catchment and watercourse slopes, main watercourse lengths and the catchment centroid. The manual catchment parameter estimation methods with GIS-based input parameters demonstrated an acceptable degree of association with the special GIS spatial modelling tools, but proved to be sensitive to biased user-input at different scale resolutions. GIS applications in an ArcGIS TM environment for the purpose of catchment parameter analyses are recommended to be used as the standard procedure in any proposed hydrological assessment.
