A significant part of the historiography on ancient Egypt has used the terms gender and women synonymously. The study of Greek and demotic letters focused mainly on formal textual analysis and philology...

This thesis aims at the study of gender construction in images publish in books on Underwater Archaeology. In other words, the idea is to observe how the notions of femininities and masculinities were constructed within the development of Underwater Archaeology. This study gathers various theoretical post-modernism aspects. After all...

This course introduces scholarly debates about sexual identities, gender identities and expressions, and sexual orientation and its representation in various media. We begin with an investigation of the theoretical underpinnings of the emerging field of queer studies, from the nineteenth century to the present day. Tracing theories of and about gender, sexuality and sexual identity over time, we will examine the genealogy of "queer" as a term that has emerged to trouble and challenge static and essentialized notions of identity. The social, cultural, and political effect of "queer" has been to pose critical challenges to gay/lesbian/straight identities predicated on a sexual binary. Queer studies shifts the focus of inquiry from sexual identities to sexual practices, many of which contradict traditional assumptions about the relationships between sex, gender, and sexuality. The course moves from a philosophical consideration of key theoretical texts (Foucault, Freud, Sedgwick, Rubin, Butler, etc.) to an exploration of the impact of those theories on historical and contemporary sexual and gender identities and communities.

The consideration of gender in transport is essential to ensure that transport is equitable, affordable, and provides access to resources and opportunities required for development. This note aims to provide guidance for mainstreaming gender into transport projects. It provides examples of how to do this, in relation to the various transport modes used in development operations by the World Bank, and well-known good practices in this area. The note is based on a number of key studies and projects from the World Bank and partner organizations, including the EU and UN. It highlights a number of constraints that women face in accessing transport infrastructure and services, as well as examples of interventions that could circumvent these constraints. Also, it identifies employment and participatory opportunities where women could play a role in the planning and implementation of transport operations. The information provided is not meant to be exhaustive but simply to draw attention to the most basic gender aspects in relation to transport.

"In this paper, I consider some of the alternative ways of being a man that have emerged in Papua New Guinea. Specifically, I discuss the ways that some forms of Christianity are promoting more caring, responsible and non-violent forms of masculinity in Papua New Guinea. Considering Christianity’s huge influence there, together with the need to ground interventions in the local context, a good understanding of the nature of Papua New Guinean forms of Christianity, and how they impact on gender, is necessary for designing effective primary prevention initiatives. Though my focus here is on the specific case of Papua New Guinea, which I know best, many of my observations are almost certainly applicable to other countries in Melanesia and the wider Pacific, where Christianity is also highly influential..." - page 3; AusAID

In this paper we aim to deepen the epistemological aspects and practice of social research from the perspective of gender studies. Starting from the complexity of the research methodology and the diversity of feminist approaches...

Thesis (PhD) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2006; The discipline of gender studies, driven by the social movement of feminism, has become an established area of study on a number of university campuses. Early examinations of gender studies courses identified two specific influences of this newly formed branch of education, intellectual mastery of the course content and the less traditional goal of personal change (the effects of student connections between class materials and personal experiences). Based on existing research, feminist theory and theories of gender development, the author of the present study hypothesized a continued personal change impact of current gender studies courses. The study explored this concept of personal change through an examination of the pre-course relationships between biological sex, experiences with sexism, parental nontraditional gender roles and students' feminist perspectives. Furthermore, the study examined post-course effects related to the concept of personal change through an inquiry on the influence of an introductory gender studies course on students' feminist perspective, gender identity, and gender self-confidence. As pre-course and post-course measures, gender studies students (n = 118) from three separate sections of the same undergraduate course completed a series of questionnaires pertaining to these areas. As a control...

Hindu Indian Bengalis as an ethno-linguistic and transnational group have negotiated their social locations historically, contemporaneously, and transnationally. In this dissertation, I examine and argue how transnational migration is the most recent in a long line of Bengali strategies to negotiate their social location vis-à-vis other populations in India. Since the early years of the nineteenth century, in Bengal specifically, a series of socio-political dynamics have reshaped and reconstituted Bengali social status. These dynamics can be observed across various geographic scales - national, regional, and local -- and have continued to inform their contemporary gender relations. En route to this examination, the dissertation exposes assumptions about who constitutes families, problematizes "family" centrally en route to examining spousal relations among Indian-Bengalis. I have examined the lived realities and experiences of migrant spouses in the U.S. and their family living in India amidst differing—and often conflicting-- imaginaries and practices of families. Through my work, I thus illustrate that family and marriage relations can be, and often are, strategic and fluid even as many people view them as structural and enduring. Over time...

This book is an attempt to bring the gender and development debate full circle-from a much-needed focus on empowering women to a more comprehensive gender framework that considers gender as a system that affects both women and men. The chapters in this book explore definitions of masculinity and male identities in a variety of social contexts, drawing from experiences in Latin America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. It draws on a slowly emerging realization that attaining the vision of gender equality will be difficult, if not impossible, without changing the ways in which masculinities are defined and acted upon. Although changing male gender norms will be a difficult and slow process, we must begin by understanding how versions of masculinities are defined and acted upon.

The main purpose of this paper is to analyse the position of rural women in East Timor by examining social aspects, with an emphasis on gender, family and community roles, access to natural resources, and women’s status within the legal and traditional system. This study is based on documentary sources, observations made in East Timor in 2000 and 2003, and household surveys carried out in three East Timorese villages located in Ermera. Gender inequality is presented in customary law and social practices. Women have less access than men to natural resources, especially land, and present a lower level of participation in decision-making. As a result the current women's contribution to rural development remains invisible in statistics and absent from most policies. Rural development strategies and policies should be formulated in line with the HRBA, implying that the principles of dignity, integrity and equality of individuals are ends in themselves, not just means to further economic growth

Diversity awareness has enormous benefits, and universities in the United States increasingly require students to complete diversity-related courses. Prior research has demonstrated that students' initial attitudes toward these courses affect their subsequent engagement, as well as the quality of their learning experience; however, very little research has examined how these initial attitudes are formed. We conducted an experiment to examine this issue in the context of a women's and gender studies course in psychology. Participants read one of two identical course descriptions that varied only the course title (i.e., Psychology of Gender versus Psychology of Women) and instructor gender. Participants perceived a women-titled course to be narrowly focused compared to an identical gender-titled course and were more interested in taking the gender-titled course. Instructor gender had no effects on any of the variables. Additionally, female participants had more positive attitudes toward the course than male participants, regardless of title. Exploratory mediation analyses indicated that the main effects of course title and participant gender were mediated by perceptions of course content. Implications for improving student experiences and interest in diversity-related courses are discussed.

This article aims to discuss the representation of female workers and its relation to gender violence in contemporary literature. Based on the analysis of the novels The gravedigger’s daughter (2008) by Joyce Carol Oates, and O apocalipse dos trabalhadores (The workers’ apocalypse) (2013) by Portuguese writer Valter Hugo Mãe, we aim to compare how the characters shift between domestic space and their workplace. Considering the perspective of gender studies and female/male authorship, we will discuss the stereotypes that are created in these narratives and their implications to incidents of violence against women, especially at their workplace.; http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7917.2015v20n1p112Este trabalho tem por objetivo problematizar as representações das trabalhadoras e sua relação direta com a violência de gênero na literatura contemporânea.

This article seeks to define what would be the order of gender studies within the Brazilian academic setting today. Given three sets of distinct reflections, the article tries to explore gender initially understood as a "theme" and a "concept" to subvert it and postulate gender today as a new scientific field. These three sets of reflections refer to: 1) the place of the current art of gender and feminist studies in Brazilian academic reflections; 2) the consequent attempt to explain and delimit the theoretical conceptions in these studies, which includes the objective of going beyond a mere concept, tool or analytic construction, establishing a new field of study in social and human sciences and even a new epistemology in the sciences; and 3) the discussions of the implications and consequences that such an initiative would have on the sciences, in addition to bringing contributions to a feminist epistemology as well as postulating a science with a multicultural and emancipating character.
