The Aguiar da Beira area (N Portugal) is located within the Central-Iberian Zone (CIZ) of the Iberian Variscan Belt. It is mainly composed by granitoids emplaced during (syntectonic) or slightly after (late- to post-tectonic) the last ductile deformation event of the Variscan orogeny (D3). From the petrological and geochemical point of view, the syntectonic granitoids from the CIZ can be included into two genetically distinct suites: (a) calc-alkaline granodiorites and biotite granites, and (b) strongly peraluminous leucogranites and two-mica granites. In the Aguiar da Beira area, the first group is represented by a small intrusion of a medium- to coarse-grained porphyritc biotite granodiorite-granite, emplaced 322 Ma ago, characterized by a slightly peraluminous and moderately evolved composition. The second group comprises a NW-SE elongated pluton of a strongly peraluminous and highly evolved medium- to fine-grained muscovite-biotite granite (317 Ma), showing occasionally a gneissic foliation concordant with the D3 variscan structures. Based on geochemical and Sr-Nd and 18O isotopic data, the biotite granodiorite-granite melt is interpreted either as the result of partial melting of heterogeneous lower crustal materials, or as the product of mixing of mantle derived magmas and lower crustal felsic anatectic melts. In contrast...

Kaolin at Campo Alegre Basin, Santa Catarina State, Brazil was formed from alteration of volcanic acid rocks. Halloysite clays dominate the clay fraction of the matrix of the kaolin body, whereas a poorly crystalline kaolinite is abundant in veins. Some primary blocky structures have high amounts of illite, in one mine, but in general, only low contents of illite-smectite, illite, chlorite-vermiculite, vermiculite and quartz were identified in the clay fraction of the samples. Toward the top of the mines, hematite and lepidocrocite appear in horizontal red and ochre colored levels and the amount of kaolinite increases compared to halloysite. The vertical zoning of alteration levels, the changes in mineralogy, the positive correlation between depth and Cation Exchange Capacity of the clays, the preservation of different types of rock textures in the kaolin bodies, the dominant tube morphology of the halloysite clays indicate a supergene genesis for the deposits. Criteria to distinguish between supergene and hypogene kaolin are discussed. Transmission Electron Microscopy of the cross sections of halloysite tubes showed polygonal forms that are ascribed to be transitional between kaolinite and halloysite. It is proposed that some of the kaolinite of these deposits be inherited from the dehydration of halloysite tubes.

Science results from the Genesis Mission illustrate the major advantages of sample return missions. (i) Important results not otherwise obtainable except by analysis in terrestrial laboratories: the isotopic compositions of O, N, and noble gases differ in the Sun from other inner solar system objects. The N isotopic composition is the same as that of Jupiter. Genesis has resolved discrepancies in the noble gas data from solar wind implanted in lunar soils. (ii) The most advanced analytical instruments have been applied to Genesis samples, including some developed specifically for the mission. (iii) The N isotope result has been replicated with four different instruments.

The Au-Cu-Bi- deposits of the Proterozoic Tennant Creek Inlier share geological and geochemical characteristics that indicate strong links in their genesis, yet the diversity in alteration assemblages, metal ratios and zonation patterns reflect variations in ore forming processes that previously have not been explained in detail. The West Peko deposit is representative of Cu-rich, pyrrhotite-bearing mineralisation with intermediate gold grades, in magnetite+ hematite-rich syntectonic ‘ironstones’. By contrast, the high grade Eldorado Au deposit contains minor sulfides and very low Cu grades, similar to several of the larger gold producers in the field (e.g. Juno, White Devil, Nobles Nob), and is also hematite-rich. Au, Chalcopyrite and Bi-sulfosalts were introduced into pre-existing ironside during progressive shearing, either late in the first regional deformation event (D1) or during a second phase of deformation. The occurrence of some Au zones outside ironstones suggests the ore fluids in part followed different flow paths to hose of the ironside-forming fluids. Three chemically and isotopically distinct fluids have been characterised. (i) Ironstone-forming fluids at West Peko and Eldorado were Ca-Na-Cl (-Fe?) brines containing 12-20 weight % total dissolved salts...

A process-based numerical modelling tool is developed, designed to support the charcterisation of karst aquifers using two complementary approaches: Firstly, the simulation of solutional conduit enlargement, which aims at predicting aquifer properties by forward modelling of karst genesis; secondly, the simulation of heat and solute transport, which aims at inferring aquifer properties from short-term karst spring responses. Karst genesis modelling is applied to a conceptual setting based on field observations from the Western Ukraine, where gypsum layers are typically supplied by artesian flow of aggressive water from insoluble aquifers underneath. Processes and parameters, controlling solutional enlargement of single conduits under artesian conditions, are identified in detailed sensitivity analyses. The development of conduit networks is examined in parameter studies, suggesting that the evolution of maze caves is predetermined by structural preferences such as laterally extended fissure networks beneath a horizon less prone to karstification. Short-term karst spring response after recharge events is firstly examined in parameter studies by forward modelling. The numerical simulations reveal that different controlling processes of heat and solute transport account for the different behaviour of water temperature and solute concentration frequently observed at karst springs. In order to test the feasibility of the inverse approach...

This dissertation investigates the use of biblical interpretation in the Book of Daniel. It demonstrates the spectrum in which Daniel uses older scriptural texts such as Genesis and Ezekiel in order to accomplish the theological concord with the earlier scriptural traditions of ancient Israel. Methodologically, the dissertation embraces the theory of literary allusion. The allusions in Daniel to Genesis 10-11 characterize Daniel as a literature of resistance to human imperialism. The motif of universal language, absolute dominion, symbolic construction for imperialism, collective power of human politics, and divine triumph over Babel, resurface to highlight the strong consonance between Genesis and Daniel. The allusions in Daniel to Ezekiel demonstrate that Ezekiel 1-3 is the greatest source of apocalyptic texts in Daniel 7 and 10-12. The anthropomorphic manifestation of God in Daniel’s apocalyptic vision harks back to that in Ezekiel’s prophetic vision. Both magnificent characters in Daniel 7 (the one like a son of man) and 10 (the heavenly revealer) are portrayed as liminal figures. The son of man figure alludes to the Glory of YHWH (Ezekiel 1), Israel (Daniel 7), the maskilim (Daniel 11-12), and Ezekiel (Ezekiel 1-3). The heavenly figure in Daniel 10 alludes to Ezekiel 1...

Abstract

This dissertation examines the book of Genesis as a functioning literary whole, orienting

post-exilic Persian-era Judeans toward their ideal future expectations. While many have

contrasted Genesis' account of origins with the prophetic books' account of the future, this work

argues that Genesis narrates Israel's origins (and the world's) precisely in order to ground Judean

hopes for an eschatological restoration. Employing a speech-act linguistic semiotics, this study

explores the temporal orientation of Genesis and its indexical pointing to the lives and hopes of

its Persian-era users. Promises made throughout Genesis apply not only to the characters of

traditional memory, but also to those who preserved/ composed/ received the text of Genesis.

Divine promises for Israel's future help constitute Israel's ongoing identity. Poor, sparsely

populated, Persian-ruled Judea imagines its mythic destiny as a great nation exemplifying (and

spreading) blessing among the families of the earth, dominating central Palestine in a new pan-

Israelite unity with neighboring Samaria and expanding both territory and population.

Genesis' narrative of Israel's origins and destiny thus dovetails with the Persian-era

expectations attested in Israel's prophetic corpus--a coherent (though variegated) restoration

eschatology. This prophetic eschatology shares mythic traditions with Genesis...

In the first book of the Bible, every patriarch and many of the matriarchs have significant encounters with anger. However, scholarship has largely ignored how Genesis treats this emotion, particularly how Genesis functions as Torah by providing ethical instruction about handling this emotion's perplexities. This dissertation aims to fill this gap in scholarship, showing both how anger functions as a literary motif in Genesis and how this book offers moral guidance for engaging this emotion.

After an introductory chapter outlining the goals, methods, and limitations of this study (ch. 1), this dissertation draws on works in translation theory, anthropology, and cross-cultural psychology to lay a theoretical framework for analyzing emotion described in another language by another culture (ch. 2). Next, it appropriates the findings of cognitive linguistics to analyze the terminology, conception, and associations of anger in the Hebrew Bible (ch. 3). The following chapter evaluates the advances that have taken place in the field of Old Testament ethics in recent decades, supplementing them with insights from philosophical, literary, and critical theorists to formulate an understanding of ethics and narrative that aligns with the contours of Genesis (ch. 4). The next chapter employs a rhetorical-literary approach to examine how texts in Genesis provide a conversation with one another about anger and its moral perplexities (ch. 5). Various themes from this study are then collected and summarized in the concluding chapter (ch. 6).

This dissertation concludes that understanding Genesis' message about anger requires laying aside traditional Western assumptions about both emotion and ethics. Genesis does not...

The aim of this paper is to focus on the portrayal of Abraham in the letter to the Galatians and the book of Genesis respectively and to put it in perspective. What are the similarities and differences in the portrayal of Abraham in the Biblical books of Galatians and Genesis respectively? Three promises are made to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3: land, progeny and blessing. It is interesting that, in each one of the passages investigated, emphasis is laid mainly (but not exclusively) on one of the promises. In Genesis 12-25, attention is paid to the promise of land and on Abraham as a blessing to the nations, but the emphasis is mainly on the problem of progeny. When Abraham resurfaces in the exilic time, the promise of the land seems to be the primary focus. In Galatians 3, the main emphasis is on blessing as the third part of the promises made to Abraham.

The story of Judah within the longer Joseph story (Genesis 37-50) provides an apt place for readers to discern the work of the Holy Spirit and what is recognized in spirituality as the work of discernment. The character goes from venal and crass to empathetic and self-giving, and the question is how the narrative shows evidence of that process. With the help of the philosopher/theorist Mikhail Bakhtin, the narrated experience of the character in seven scenes is examined for evidence of Judah's journey of transformation - presumably guided by God's widening and inspiring Spirit, with special attention given to the scene (Genesis 44) where Judah must persuade his (unrecognized) brother Joseph, serving as Viceroy of Egypt, to allow Judah to take punishment in place of their brother Benjamin for the sake of their father. The larger Holy Spirit and discernment context of the story is the dreams of Joseph.

The narrative in Genesis 18:1-15 deals with God's visit to Abraham at Mamre. The general tendency in the interpretation of this narrative is to focus on Abraham's hospitality. It is usually interpreted as an example of his righteousness, in line with Hebrews 13:2, or with the test motive of the Greek myth of the birth of Orion. These interpretations, however, seem to be in conflict with the narrator's own theological views. This study, therefore, attempts to explore the view point of the author of the Fellowship Narrative (Gn 18:1-15) within the context of the larger Abraham narrative (Gn 11:27-25:11). The method used for the investigation is mainly that of narrative criticism. Attention is paid to the narrator's various literary skills: 'linking structure with preceding episode' (Gn 18:1a), the 'sandwiched structure' of the larger context (Gn 18:1-21:7), the unique plot sequence, as well as repeated clue words and phrases (such as 'laugh', 'Sarah' and 'this time next year'). These literary aspects are used by the narrator to depict the faithfulness of the Lord who fulfils what he promised. The conclusion of this study overturns the traditional interpretations of the Fellowship Narrative.
