OBJECTIVE: To assess nutritional status based on weight and height variables in children aged 7-9-y-old in a city from the South of Brazil (Florianópolis) and to compare the prevalence of thinness and overweight and environmental factors between Brazil and France. METHODS: Randomly stratified samples of 7-9 y-old children (Florianópolis, n= 2.232; France, n= 1.582). Both studies followed the protocol recommended by the European Childhood Obesity Group. Weight and height were recorded according to World Health Organization recommendation. Thinness and overweight were defined using the French references. Physical activity and sedentary behaviors were compared. RESULTS: Florianópolis children were taller and heavier than the French. The frequency of thinness was lower in Florianópolis as compared to France (1.1 vs 3.9%). Overweight frequency was 19.9% in Florianópolis as compared to 16.3% in France. French children had a higher level of physical activity. In particular, 66.5% of French children had a regular sport activity compared to 35.7% in Florianópolis. In France, daily television and screen viewing time was 2 hours per day as compared to 3.3 hours in Brazil. CONCLUSION: Behavioral parameters, particularly sedentary lifestyle...

France had 65.3 million inhabitants as of 1 January 2012, including 1.9 million in the overseas départements. The population is slightly younger than that of the European Union as a whole. Population growth continues at the same rate, mainly through natural increase. There are now more African than European immigrants living in France. Fertility was practically stable in 2011 (2.01 children per woman), but the lifetime fertility of the 1971–1972 cohorts reached a historic low in metropolitan France (1.99 children per woman), nevertheless remaining among the highest in Europe. Abortion levels remained stable and rates among young people are no longer increasing. The marriage rate is falling and the divorce rate has stabilized (46.2 divorces per 100 marriages in 2011). The risk of divorce decreases with age, but has greatly increased among the under-70s over the last decade. Life expectancy at birth (78.4 years for men, 85.0 for women) has continued to increase at the same rate, mainly thanks to progress at advanced ages. Among European countries, France has the lowest mortality in the over-65 age group, but it ranks less well for premature mortality.

The Pacific has always been an object of fantasy. The idealistic idea of the region can be easily found in literature and art, with painter P. Gauguin among the best example of this utopian vision. This vision remains in the minds of most Europeans; the Pacific is above all a good tourist destination. However, the Pacific is more than just a holiday attraction. The ancient culture of Indigenous people, the natural diversity, the resources of the Pacific Islands are attracting more and more scientists from all over the world. Consequently, the collaboration between scholars is increasingly an important component of Pacific studies. The embassy asked to focus the report on the cooperation between France and Australia in the Pacific studies and on ways to improve it. This cooperation is already well developed and brings many scholars from France and Australia to cooperate efficiently in developing common research. However, this cooperation has some disparities. They include neglect for the social sciences, a lack of an efficient communication tool and the problem of the language barrier. Thus there is cause for improvement, which will better the relationship between France and Australia in this field. The collaboration between France and Australia in the Pacific Studies is well developed in natural sciences. Research Centres in France (IFREMER...

Chinese migration to France is not a new phenomenon; however, France has seen rapid growth of migration from China in the past decade. Among the increasingly diverse migratory flow, a prominent group is Chinese students. As in many European countries, more and more Chinese students are now studying in France, at universities, grandes écoles and language schools etc… There is limited research focusing on this group of migrants. Therefore, this paper will analyse the circular migration of Chinese students between China and France by focusing on the return migration from elite French business schools. It illustrates the importance of prior experiences and pre-acquisition of academic and professional capital on their choice to migrate to France. At the same time, this paper investigates how family ties with China and institutional agents (private and public sectors) and the multiple-layers of forces (national and supranational) behind Chinese student return migration. This paper argues that the strong family relations and contacts, career strategy and prospects for returnees and confidence in the Chinese economy are significant return factors. Returnees’ academic, professional and social experiences in France are also important in their decision. In addition...

The objective of this dissertation is to answer the puzzle raised by political scientist John Kirton: Why has Canada, for the last century, gone to war for and beside France? In other words, I assess France’s relative importance in Canadian strategic culture. The hypothesis defended is that the emergence of France in Canadian strategic culture stems from the social construction of Canada's internal state identity as a bicultural (English and French) country, with its corollary external identity as an Atlanticist country, emerging in 1940, and whose associated principles (allied unity, status and functional representation) explain the legitimacy to use force outside Canada's borders as well as the magnitude of Canada's military contribution. This gives France a double influence on Canada’s strategic culture, that is to say, in the constitution of what is considered a “just” cause: the legitimacy of quadrilateral multilateralism, as well as the "Christian democratic" values and ethnocultural heritage shared between Canada and France, which I call "francosphère.” The demonstration that France is an essential geonormative pillar in Canada’s international security policy – justifying an extension of the geometric metaphor of the North Atlantic triangle - is established in three stages. First...

French melon growers have found themselves confronted with melon root decay. Accordingly, Ctifl, in close collaboration with the regional research stations and INRA, set up a study designed to gain greater knowledge of the various phytosanitary problems and identify the probable cause(s). The principle of the study was to monitor pathogen distribution changes in melon. Three plots were monitored and a number of samples from other plots were also studied (19 samples in 2003, 22 in 2004, 6 in 2005, 2 in 2006 and 25 in 2007). The symptoms that developed during the years of the study were identified based on this body of data. The results show the prevalence of problems related to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis race 1-2 yellowing, often found together with other pathogenic soil fungi, which constitute aggravating factors. The isolates of F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis collected from samples appear to be more aggressive than the reference strains used in the breeding tests for resistance.; Cucurbitaceae 2008. White, Owen; Resistance in France during World War II has been the subject of much historiographical and popular interest. Few narratives, however, acknowledge the impact of the resistance work of non-French women, who often served in capacities beyond nurse and nurturer. Deeper research into the lives and experiences of foreign women in France who participated in resistance activities reveals much about Vichy’s expectations of women’s roles under their regime, as well as the limits of exclusive categories of resistance and nationality. In this thesis I explore the participation of non-French women in resistance activities in France by examining their involvement in the American Friends Service Committee, the Emergency Rescue Committee (or Centre Américain de Secours), and Special Operations Executive. The concepts of relief, rescue and recovery help frame the discussion of resistance inherent in the activities of these organizations. I also examine how these women understood or confronted gendered expectations of work, family and service through their resistance activities, and then recorded their experiences in memoirs, letters and oral histories prepared years after the end of the war. These sources offer the dilemmas of selective...

Krill, Rosemary E.; In New France, public buildings were imbued with powerful symbolism both inside and out. The use of terms such as castle (ch??teau ), palace (palais ), and private townhouse (h??tel or h??tel particulier ) to designate structures built for colonial notables underscored their rank within the socio-political framework of the French Ancien R??gime. Inside stately colonial residences built at royal expense, material manifestations of power and fashion converged to create microcosms of monarchical absolutism and aristocratic sociability an ocean away from the metropole. Like their counterparts in France, colonial governors, intendants, bishops, and others made full use of physical objects and spaces to legitimize authority, articulate elite identity, and arbitrate good taste. Imported furniture, tapestries, mirrors, and other items allowed these individuals to live according to courtly etiquette and style launched at Versailles in addition to trends for comfort refined in Paris. Through the lens of archival records, architecture, and decorative arts, this study draws connections between the ownership of such commodities in New France and the development and entrenchment of elite cultural practice there. An approach combining Atlantic world history...

Mots-clés : Éthique procédurale ; sciences sociales ; Brésil ; France; The purpose of this article is to understand and compare the issues related to procedural ethics in France and Brazil, using a socio-historical approach and our experiences. The comparison shows the same disciplinary tension between social and biomedical sciences. In both countries we can see a deliberate policy to regulate the research ethically. In France, contrary to Brazil, the spread of procedural ethics is not completed yet. Procedural ethics characterized by a normative...
