This study is concerned with recovering the history of teaching drawing and its trajectory that extends from the School of Fine Arts (Escola de Belas Artes - EBA) to the creation of the Center of Arts (Centro de Artes - CA). It traverses the changes in structure and activities of the professors who have taught drawing, their materials and methodologies. The historical trajectory of teaching drawing in the city of Pelotas is a subject for research that is still incipient regarding this theme. This is not different with respect to the university, specifically in the area of the arts, in which nomenclature is modified according to the necessity for change in academic structure: ILA Institute of Letters and Arts, IAD Institute of Arts and Design- and CA Center of Arts. Thus, this study seeks to write a fragment of the school???s institutional history as a way of revealing its identity. A principal source for research is the Center of Arts??? collection, its recorded and visual documentation. The emphasis on teaching drawing within the arts especially seeks to analyze professors and their methodologies with respect to their activities as artists-draughtsmen and in the classroom, in this way showing the evolution or involution of the structure of teaching and its methodologies at the Federal University of Pelotas in the area of the arts. The research methodology employed is a documental survey based on fragments dispersed among personal and public collections with sources including personal belongings (of the professors) and documents belonging to the Center of Arts. Theoretical references are based texts with themes relatedon cultural memory...

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston owns ten oil sketches by Thomas Sully (1783-1872) which depict episodes from Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. The ten paintings represent different events in Crusoe's twenty-eight year stay on an uninhabited island from the shipwreck which landed him there to his departure. He dated the first sketch 1856, and they were probably the preparatory studies for ten larger paintings of the same subjects which he completed in 1858. On the back of the first sketch Sully acknowledged his source for the sketches, illustrations by the English artist, Thomas Stothard (1755-1834) which were published in an 1820 edition of Robinson Crusoe. In addition to the Robinson Crusoe series, Sully painted many other literary subjects which have never been studied in any detail. Although Sully is known as a portraitist, these examples of his subject paintings indicate that they should be studied further.

Fine arts versus decorative arts: the categorization of Japanese arts at the international expositions in Vienna (1873), Paris (1878) and Chicago (1893)

One of the great intellectual conceits of the Western world in the nineteenth century was the invention of an artistic hierarchy, with the ‘fine arts’ considered more important than the ‘decorative arts’. This article investigates how the Western preoccupation with ‘fine arts’ affected the manner in which the Meiji period (1868–1912) Japanese government exhibited its nation's rich tradition of arts at international expositions. Expositions were the great arenas for industrial and cultural competition. The categorization of many of Japan's art forms as ‘manufactures’ at expositions turned what was an academic distinction into a political and diplomatic issue. Historically there was no distinction between fine arts and decorative arts, with no words in the Japanese language to express such a distinction. However, the categorization raised the fear that Japanese civilization would be considered second rate when compared with the West. This article focuses on this issue at the international expositions in Vienna in 1873, where the position was first encountered, in Paris in 1878 where it came to a head and in Chicago in 1893 where it seemed a resolution had been reached in securing international acceptance of Japanese ‘decorative’ arts as fine arts.; Kimi Coaldrake

This paper approaches the questions related to the creation in Fine Arts, and on how the artist perceives the time spent during this process. The motivating questions for this research came from the evidences of existence of an interval between the initial project that triggers creation, and the passage in art, the elapsing time to carry through the Fine Artistic work. The text attempts to review the three Gods of Time: Chronos, Aeon and Kairos, as possible intersection points in the experienced time during the process of creation. Chronos, God of chronological time, prevents us to forget the deadlines. Aeon, the eternal presence (the play, the joy), let us have the sensation that, during the creation in Fine Arts, it is possible to stop the time and to live the “time in suspension” for a while. And Kairos, the God of the of the right opportune moments (a passing instant when an opening that brings to different futures appears), may lead us to a new idea, which, like a lightning discloses the unexpected, that may present as a perceptive insight, occurring from, basically, our own choices.; Este artigo aborda questões ligadas ao processo criador em artes visuais e ao modo como o tempo vivido pode ser percebido durante estes processos.

This thesis is divided into two sections. The first deals with my development as a printmaker. In this section I will show how my education and work experience, which include both fine arts and graphic arts, have affected the growth of my imagery. The second section I am concerned primarily with the conception and creation of the images rather than the technical production details. only when the techniques are unusual or unconventional will I discuss them.

Rosemary Krill; Born into a wealthy Chicago family, Elizabeth Day McCormick (1873-1957) dedicated her life and considerable means to collecting textiles, focusing on European needlework, costumes, and costume accessories from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. Between 1943 and 1953, she donated approximately 6,000 objects to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA). Gertrude Townsend (1893-1979), the museum???s first textiles curator, worked closely with McCormick to encourage her patronage, manage the donation, and research and interpret objects in the collection. McCormick and the MFA serve as a case study for exploring the relationship between collectors and museums, and what happens when a collection is transferred from private to public ownership and an individual???s taste becomes institutional fact. The relationship of McCormick and Townsend also highlights how female networks of collectors, professionals, philanthropists, and enthusiasts influenced museum development, particularly in relation to textile and costume collections. Overall, the conviction that museums reflect intellectual and social priorities of their time drives this thesis, and this case study begins to dissect the institutional authority cultivated by museums.; M.A.; Winterthur Program in American Material Culture
