The high mass transport caused by ultrasonic radiation in the preconcentration of trace metal species in anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV), leads to an order of magnitude enhancement in sensitivity. A Nafion-coated mercury thin-film working electrode is placed in a specially designed small-volume sonovoltammetric cell. The preparation and curing procedure for the Nafion film on a glassy carbon electrode substrate as well as ultrasound-enhanced mercury deposition through the Nafion film are optimized. The resulting electrode assembly is stable under ultrasonic irradiation. Optical microscopy observations show the formation of closely spaced mercury droplets of micrometer dimensions under the Nafion film. The performance characteristics of ultrasound-enhanced ASV at the Nafion-coated mercury thin-film electrode are studied in detail. The detection limit obtained for lead and cadmium test species is 3 × 10-11 M (30 s preconcentration in the presence of ultrasound). A presente dissertação inicia-se por uma breve tentativa de definição do período clássico do film noir. Após uma contextualização sociocultural, histórica e política, é abordada a dificuldade em categorizar os filmes deste tipo. Propondo dar um contributo para a discussão, o film noir é assumido como sendo uma categoria transgenérica. Partindo da análise dos contextos do film noir, é proposta uma abordagem da figura feminina presente no mesmo. Mulher fatal, mulher cativa e mulher independente são os três tipos considerados. Analisar a mulher no film noir é um contributo para compreender o lugar das mulheres na sociedade americana. Enquanto as duas primeiras são claramente reconhecidas pela crítica noir, bem como as suas significações, a mulher independente é uma figura pouco explorada, e que merece um maior reconhecimento, para além de ser das que mais está associada à sua época. O governo do presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, no período de 2003 a 2010, foi marcado pela adoção de uma nova concepção de cultura, sustentando a necessidade de assumi-la enquanto valores, posturas e comportamentos sociais. Isso exigiu do Estado uma nova postura, sustentada pelas políticas culturais, cabendo destaque ao esforço de democratização promovido com a reestruturação do Ministério da Cultura (MinC) como tentativa de combater o problema da exclusão cultural. Biocides play an important role in the preservation of a variety of products susceptible to microbiological growth such as paint, a material that can undergo microbial deterioration both in storing (inside the can) and after the application on a surface. In this work, artificial neural networks were used to predict the level of fungal growth on surfaces painted with water-based paints with biocide formulations containing different concentrations of ten kinds of commercial and experimental chemical agents. The use of neural networks is well known in chemical processes and they are a powerful tool for discovering relationships between sets of data. Industrial Environmental Tropical Chamber tests were used as the network training set. The importance of the each additive of the dry-film biocide formulation in prevention of biodeterioration was also examined.

The initial deposition of bacteria in most aquatic systems is affected by the presence of a conditioning film adsorbed at the liquid-solid interface. Due to the inherent complexity of such films, their impact on bacterial deposition remains poorly defined. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the effect of a conditioning film on the deposition of motile and nonmotile Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells in a radial stagnation point flow system. A well-defined alginate film was used as a model conditioning film because of its polysaccharide and polyelectrolyte nature. Deposition experiments under favorable (nonrepulsive) conditions demonstrated the importance of swimming motility for cell transport towards the substrate. The impact of the flagella of motile cells on deposition is dependent on the presence of the conditioning film. We showed that on a clean substrate surface, electrostatic repulsion governs bacterial deposition and the presence of flagella increases cell deposition. However, our results suggest that steric interactions between flagella and extended polyelectrolytes of the conditioning film hinder cell deposition. At a high ionic strength (100 mM), active swimming motility and changes in alginate film structure suppressed the steric barrier and allowed conditions favorable for deposition. Evaluation of tear film is performed by an optical reflectometer system with alignment guided by a galvanometer scanner. The reflectometer system utilizes optical fibers to deliver illumination light to the tear film and collect the film reflectance as a function of wavelength. Film thickness is determined by best fitting the reflectance-wavelength curve. The spectral reflectance acquisition time is 15 ms, fast enough for detecting film thickness changes. Fast beam alignment of 1 s is achieved by the galvanometer scanner. The reflectometer was first used to evaluate artificial tear film on a model eye with and without a contact lens. The film thickness and thinning rate have been successfully quantified with the minimum measured thickness of about 0.3 μm. Tear films in human eyes, with and without a contact lens, have also been evaluated. A high-contrast spectral reflectance signal from the precontact lens tear film is clearly observed, and the thinning dynamics have been easily recorded from 3.69 to 1.31 μm with lipid layer thickness variation in the range of 41 to 67 nm. The accuracy of the measurement is better than ±0.58% of the film thickness at an estimated tear film refractive index error of ±0.001. The fiber-based reflectometer system is compact and easy to handle.

Subject to a compressive membrane stress, an elastic film bonded on a substrate can become unstable, forming wrinkles, creases or delaminated buckles. Further increasing the compressive stress can induce advanced modes of instabilities including period-doubles, folds, localized ridges, delamination, and coexistent instabilities. While various instabilities in film-substrate systems under compression have been analyzed separately, a systematic and quantitative understanding of these instabilities is still elusive. Here we present a joint experimental and theoretical study to systematically explore the instabilities in elastic film-substrate systems under uniaxial compression. We use the Maxwell stability criterion to analyze the occurrence and evolution of instabilities analogous to phase transitions in thermodynamic systems. We show that the moduli of the film and the substrate, the film-substrate adhesion strength, the film thickness, and the prestretch in the substrate determine various modes of instabilities. Defects in the film-substrate system can facilitate it to overcome energy barriers during occurrence and evolution of instabilities. We provide a set of phase diagrams to predict both initial and advanced modes of instabilities in compressed film-substrate systems. The phase diagrams can be used to guide the design of film-substrate systems to achieve desired modes of instabilities.

The fluorescein tear film break-up test is a common tear film stability test for dry eye diagnosis. This test requires applying fluorescein sodium drops to a tear film to observe the tear film break-up. However, this test is limited by using the fluorescein sodium drops, which can induce reflex tearing and reduce the reliability of the diagnosis results. This paper proposes that tear film evaporation accelerates on the fluorescein tear film break-up area (FTBA), resulting in a lower temperature area (LTA) on the tear film. A dual modality system was established to capture the thermal and fluorescent image of fluorescein-stain tear films for 48 participants. Observations showed that the LTA and FTBA were highly correlated in their location (r = 0.82) and size (r = 0.91). This is first study to show that the FTBA and LTA are essentially the same region. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using the noncontact thermograph method to evaluate tear film stability without using a fluorescein sodium drop.

Film is an integral part of the everyday cultural experience of millions of Canadians (Ewoudou, 2005). Though we have enjoyed film as a society for close to a century, we have been reluctant to regard it as art. The literature on the use of film in education shows that it is predominantly employed as a pedagogical aid and not studied for its intrinsic aesthetic value. This paper will demonstrate that film is a legitimate art form that edifies students and thus merits serious study in the secondary school curriculum. It will discuss how film conveys meaning through a visual narrative. Fundamental cinematic techniques will be examined to show how they communicate ideas, create mood and evoke empathy in the viewer. It will demonstrate how film has evolved aesthetically by looking at the stylistic innovations of the French New Wave movement. An exemplar film from this period, The 400 Blows (1959), will then be analyzed to illustrate the beauty of the medium and its power to express the essence of the human condition. The paper will conclude by advocating for the inclusion of film in the existing Ontario secondary school curriculum and giving recommendations for its study.

The structure and properties of thin organic films electrografted to conducting surfaces by reduction of the corresponding diazonium salts are not well understood. In this work we used electrochemistry and contact angle measurements to characterize multilayer carboxyphenyl and methylphenyl films grafted to Au surfaces. Freshly grafted films contain material that can be readily removed during potential cycling and sonication. Observation of Au oxide surface electrochemistry confirms a porous bulk film structure as previously found for films electrografted to carbon surfaces. The charge associated with Au oxide reduction was used to estimate the upper limit for surface concentration of modifiers directly attached to the surface after careful preparation of the Au surface prior to and after grafting. Values for the surface concentration of the modifier in the range of 3-4 × 10⁻¹⁰ mol cm⁻² indicate that the first layer of the films is loosely packed. The close correspondence of surface concentration with that previously found for a "monolayer equivalent" of nitrophenyl film covalently grafted to smooth carbon surfaces ((2.5 ± 0.5) × 10⁻¹⁰ mol cm⁻²) supports a similar film formation mechanism, that is, formation of a Au-C bond. Accurate measurements of the shape of a mercury drop separated from a smooth flat solid surface by a thin aqueous film reported recently by Connor and Horn (Faraday Discuss. 2003, 123, 193−206) have been analyzed to calculate the excess pressure in the film. The analysis is based on calculating the local curvature of the mercury/aqueous interface, and relating it via the Young−Laplace equation to the pressure drop across the interface, which is the difference between the aqueous film pressure and the known internal pressure of the mercury drop. For drop shapes measured under quiescent conditions, the only contribution to film pressure is the disjoining pressure arising from double-layer forces acting between the mercury and mica surfaces. Under dynamic conditions, hydrodynamic pressure is also present, and this is calculated by subtracting the disjoining pressure from the total film pressure. The data, which were measured to investigate the thin film drainage during approach of a fluid drop to a solid wall, show a classical dimpling of the mercury drop when it approaches the mica surface. Four data sets are available, corresponding to different magnitudes and signs of disjoining pressure, obtained by controlling the surface potential of the mercury. peer-reviewed; Thin films of Indium-zinc-tin oxide have been prepared by Vacuum Thermal Evaporation (VTE). The sensing characteristics of these films to environmentally relevant ozone concentrations were studied at room temperature. The effects of film thickness, deposition rate and annealing were investigated. The resistance of the thin film was found to be inversely proportional to the deposition rate. The highest sensitivity of the ozone sensors was found at a deposition rate of 1.2 nm/s - 1.4 nm/s. In addition the 03 sensors were found to perform best with a 40 nm thick sensing layer. In203, ZnO and SnO2 were deposited on alumina substrates containing interdigitated electrodes by means of VTE. These results have shown that ln203:ZnO:SnO2 thin films prepared by VTE method are promising for room temperature ozone sensing.

Thin-film sensing with a film thickness much less than a wavelength is an important challenge in conventional transmission-mode terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). Since the interaction length between terahertz waves and a sample film is short, a small change in the transmitted signal compared with the reference is considerably obscured by system uncertainties. In this article, several possible thin-film measurement procedures are carefully investigated. It is suggested that an alternating sample and reference measurement approach is most robust for thin-film sensing. In addition, a closed-form criterion is developed to determine the critical thickness, i.e., the minimal thickness of a film unambiguously detectable by transmission-mode THz-TDS. The analysis considers influences from the Fresnel transmission at interfaces and the Fabry-Pérot reflections, in addition to the propagation across the film. The experimental results show that typical THz-TDS systems can detect polymer films with a thickness down to a few microns, two orders of magnitude less than the wavelength. For reasonably accurate characterization, it is recommended that the film thickness be at least ten times above this limit. The analysis is readily extended to biomolecular and semiconductor films. Com a expansão do debate da crise ambiental na sociedade, surgem na década de 1980, como novos espaços de veiculação das questões ambientais, os festivais de cinema ambiental. O debate, aparentemente homogêneo, é divergente, múltiplo e conflituoso, sendo necessário problematizar as representações relacionadas à temática ambiental e explicitar os conflitos socioambientais, com o intuito de identificar onde estão às brechas, os germes para a emancipação e para o equilíbrio socioambiental. Nessa perspectiva, essa pesquisa apresenta uma discussão teórica reflexiva multidisciplinar sobre o cinema ambiental, inter-relacionando-o com a crise socioambiental, com concepções de meio ambiente, com festivais de cinema ambiental, com Educação Ambiental e com potencial educador do filme. 5 pages.; Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic structure of two different ultrathin bismuth films on a Si(111)-7×7 substrate; a hexagonal film (HEX film) having a bulklike (A7-like) structure and a film having a black-phosphorus-like structure (BP film). The HEX film is metallic because of spin–orbit (SO)-split surface-state bands lying inside the projected bulk band gap near the Fermi level. Another SO-split surface state is also observed inside the SO gap. The BP film exhibits a significant reduction in metallicity in contrast to the HEX film. This is related to the formation of a very stable paired-layer structure, the mechanism of which is similar to that of the stabilization of semiconducting bulk black P. However, unlike bulk black P, a certain extent of metallicity still remains. This slight metallicity can be associated with buckling and strain in the BP film, which is analogous to the fact that shear angle distortion in bulk Bi is responsible for its semimetallicity.; Peer reviewed

We focus on the case where the drop cannot be detached from the surface by the mechanical forces exerted by the cleaning fluid on the drop surface. The fluid in the drop dissolves into the cleaning film flow, which then transports it away. We present a mathematical model for the mass transfer of the viscous fluid from the droplet into the film flow. The model assumes that the droplet has a negligible impact on the film velocity. To assess the impact of the drop on the velocity of the cleaning fluid, we have developed a novel experimental technique based on particle image velocimetry. We find that at intermediate Reynolds number the streamwise velocity can be strongly affected by the presence of the droplet. We discuss this impact on the cleaning of the droplet. Using the dye attenuation technique, we also measure the convective mass transfer of some dye mixed into the droplet and diffusing into the falling film. A nonionic poly(ethylene oxide)-based surfactant, Brij 58, was used as the template and titanium chloride as the inorganic precursor. The reflectivity pattern, film thickness and refractive index were shown to be dependent on film deposition method, whether by casting or by dip-coating onto a silicon wafer, the Brij 58 TiO2 ratio and the relative humidity. At Brij 58 contents of 40 wt%, the reflectivity profile displayed only a single diffraction peak. At 70 wt% Bragg diffraction indicated a lamellar ordering of film components. Modelled reflectivity data suggested a 1060 Å thick film that comprised 17 layers of alternating surfactant and titania with a d spacing of about 60 Å. The effect of relative humidity on film structure was explored.
