The ovarian complement of anurans exhibiting different reproductive modes is highly diverse, and intraspecific variation in reproductive output of anurans is generally related to variation in female properties and/or environmental conditions. The size-fecundity relationships, reproductive investment, and correlation between ovary mass and fat body mass were investigated for females of an anuran assemblage in the Pantanal, Brazil. Female body size was positively correlated with clutch size among seven of the eight species analyzed. However, these results seem to be influenced by seasonal variation in fecundity. Interspecific size-fecundity relationships revealed that female SVL was positively correlated with clutch size and egg size regardless of reproductive mode. Among 11 species analyzed, the reproductive investment (RI: ovary mass relative to body mass) varied from 5.5 to 18%, and there were no differences among reproductive modes and activity patterns (explosive/prolonged). RI correlated negatively with female size. Among three Leptodactylus species examined, negative correlation between ovary mass and fat body mass was verified for two species. Variations in the reproductive strategies are closely related to the reproductive activity patterns and reproductive modes exhibited by individual species...

Comunicação apresentada na 5th Conference of the ESA - "Visions and Divisions", 28 August - 1 September, 2001, Helsinki, Finland.; The conceptualisation of the female body as a sexual and reproductive object has been for a long time a focus of both law’s and science regulation. Considering the specific sexual objectification of the phenomenon of prostitution in Portugal, we aim to analyse how the cultures of law and science, which claim to be self-regulating and independent from other knowledges and practices, are in fact mutually constitutive and jointly produce dominant ideas about women’s bodies, women’s sexuality and women’s place in society. According to this, we intend to emphasize how the social phenomenon of female prostitution can be described as a “boundary object”, since it is plastic enough to adapt itself to both law and science procedures, and yet robust enough to maintain a common and recognizable identity trough those two different institutions. The representations of law and science as different but complementary enterprises towards female prostitution create constantly negotiable boundaries and a clear fluidity of work divisions that have in common the feature of providing the basis to define the prostitute as out of the regulated and authorized boundaries of proper feminine behaviour. The position of law and science in a hierarchy of knowledges allows a very direct control over the prostitutes’ bodies and behaviours in such ways that it reinforces the reproduction of women in a sexualised...

Two populations of the wasp Trypoxylon rogenhoferi Kohl, 1884 from São Carlos and Luís Antônio, State of São Paulo, Brazil, were observed and sampled from May 1999 to February 2001 using trap-nests. This mass-provisioning wasp was used to test some aspects of optimal sex allocation theory. Both populations fit all the predictions of the models of Green and Brockmann and Grafen. Maternal provisions determined the size of each offspring, and females allocated well-stocked brood cells to daughters, the sex that benefits most being large. This strategy resulted in a difference in size between the sexes. In São Carlos, female weight at emergence was 1.18 times that of males, in Luís Antônio this value was 1.13. The brood cell volume was correlated with both wing length and weight at emergence in both sexes, and the chance that a given brood cell contained a male offspring decreased with increased brood cell volume. In T. rogenhoferi female body size was related to fitness. Larger females were able to collect more mass of spiders per day, the spiders they captured were heavier, and they provisioned more brood cells per day. They also produced larger daughters. For males, no relationship between body size and fitness was found, but the data were scarce. Since the patterns of provisioning were variable among different females in both study sites...

In this study 57 specimens of the lizard Ameiva ameiva (Linnaeus, 1758) collected in the restinga at Barra de Maricá, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil, were analyzed to investigate size relations and reproduction (in females) and sexual dimorphism of this population. We answered the following questions: 1) what is the minimum reproductive body size in females? 2) what is the average clutch size and 3) how is clutch size related to body size? 4) Are body and head sizes sexually dimorphic? Mean clutch size was 6.7 ± 2.1 eggs and was positively correlated with female body size. Sexual dimorphism favoring males was found: adult mean snout-vent length was great in males (124.2 ± 17.8 mm) than females (96.5 ± 23.1 mm SVL), and males were larger with respect to head width and length, and body mass. Thus, despite the marked seasonality at Barra de Maricá, A. ameiva has an extended reproductive period. Also, intrasexual selection may have acted on females to produce larger clutches, and on males, favoring larger males.

As a part of a management program we captured 39 capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in an agroecosystem at the east central region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil from March 2001 to May 2002. Average adult male body mass was 54.1 ± 8.05 kg, and average adult female body mass was 62.0 ± 12.03 kg. Average juvenile male body mass was 23.0 ± 8.28 kg, and average juvenile female body mass was 26.7 ± 5.86 kg. Males and females presented a significant variation in the allometric relation between body mass and body length. Body mass and body length had a high correlation for both adult males and adult females. These results from capybaras in agroecosystem might be relevant for further management programs.

This work provides a combined analysis of linguistics and visual structures of a piece of advertising promoting a weight management drug which follows a leaflet format. To meet this purpose, I based my analysis mainly on the theoretical framework proposed by Halliday (1985; 1994; 2004) and Kress and van Leeuven (1996) for their interest in the functional meaning of language and visual modes. A semiotic-linguistic analysis shows how gendered messages of fit empowerment in promotional discourse can paradoxically highlight a social pressure played against a female body. The theoretical apparatus helps to scrutinize the dynamic interplay of different semiotic modes, constantly taken by advertising, so as to emphasize the tension between female physical empowerment and dictations of gendered body norms. Even a partial analysis of the whole campaign indicates how language and images are used to turn female body insecurity into a profitable commodity. This work is part of my PhD. research in progress on a multimodal analysis of the Brazilian version advertising campaign.; Este trabalho prop??e uma an??lise das estruturas ling????sticas e visuais de parte de uma campanha publicit??ria a qual promove um medicamento para controle de peso sob o formato de um ???leaflet???.

The purpose of this research was to examine how attachment style and rejection interact to influence female body image. I hypothesized that women who were high in attachment anxiety would report more negative self-evaluations than women who were low in attachment anxiety. I also hypothesized that this main effect would be qualified by a significant interaction between attachment anxiety and rejection, such that highly anxious women who were rejected would report even more negative self-evaluations than highly anxious women who were not rejected. In Study One, I found that higher levels of attachment anxiety were associated with lower self-evaluations but, contrary to expectations, attachment avoidance and rejection condition interacted to influence self-evaluations. At low levels of avoidance, women in the rejection condition reported significantly higher levels of appearance state self-esteem, body esteem, and trait self-esteem than women in the non-rejection condition. However, at high levels of avoidance, women in the rejection condition reported lower levels of these three constructs than women in the non-rejection condition, although this finding was statistically significant only for appearance state self-esteem. In Study Two...

Puis...

The proposition of this academic research is to investigate the representations of female body produced by medical discourse in the 13th century, starting from the analysis of three genres of medical literature in Late Middle Ages: the medical comments to Isagoge of Johannitius from Pedro Hispano, intellectual and physical portuguese, the theoretical treatise assigned to Alberto Magno called De secretis mulierum, and the set of recipes, Thesaurus pauperum, also authored by Peter of Spain. In this context, the medical knowledge rested basically in Aristotle's natural philosophy and in galenism (that had incorporated the medical knowledge and philosophy of the Ancient World), taken up and reinterpreted by the Arabs. For women and female issues, the medicine, under the reasoning of these bases, represented a resumption of a long medical tradition that had distinguished, hierarchized and inferiorized the female body in relation to the male body, likewise the woman's body was intended only for reproduction. Identified mainly regarding to the works of Aristotle and Galen, this understanding has been assimilated and resignified in the writings of the Latin medical tradition (Etimologias, of Isidore of Seville) and in the medieval arabic tradition (De Genecia...

Dessa forma, os trabalhos propostos para a reflexão nesta dissertação de mestrado envolvem corpo feminino, imagem, tempo e espaço em um processo de acumulação e arquivamento, no qual o corpo registra e produz imagem a partir da performance.; Performance and its unfoldings in photographic and videographic languages is the theme of this study, elaborated from the author's creative process, developed between 2010-2012. While married female members of the Japanese aristocracy followed the ideal of bearing children, female Buddhist novices and ordained women, often belonging to the aristocracy themselves, had to abstain from sexual activity and reproduction in accordance with the ordination rules. Infertility was considered with disdain by the first group, whereas not bearing children was the utmost expression of leading a virtuous life for the second group. However, both groups were concerned with keeping their physical bodies healthy: some to become mothers, the others to live as nuns or religious sisters. Focusing on the early medieval period, this paper examines various sources to illuminate the ways in which women were cared for and the kind of views and ideas that informed this care. Instead of looking at the ancient methods of treatment through a modern «scientific» lens and sorting them into «proto-scientific» and «superstitious» categories, medico-ritual and religious views on the female body are explored as facets of the worldview prevalent in the period under consideration. Special attention is paid to relevant chapters of the first medical work produced in Japan, the Ishinpō, compiled by a court physician, Tanba no Yasuyori, in the late 10th century CE. The investigation of other sources...

The article focuses on the three contemporary Japanese poets Yosano Akiko, Sagawa Chika and Ito Hiromi as examples of women who break away from the conventions of “women’s poetry” and subvert the image of femininity which has been traditionally portrayed in poems written by Japanese women, at the same time that they preserve in their works themes related to the female sex. Taking as connecting point the female body and the way it is positioned in relation to the outside world, the article analyzes how Yosano, Sagawa and Ito –each in her own subversive way– use different languages to explore the female body itself, as well as themes such as female sexuality, love, motherhood and death.

An overabundance of hypotheses have been proposed to account for reversed sexual size dimorphism (RSD; females the larger sex) in raptors. Previous research principally focused on examining interspecific patterns of RSD, rarely testing predictions of various hypotheses within populations. To redress this, we used data from both sexes of a large brown falcon, Falco berigora, population to evaluate the importance of size and body condition indices on the hunting prowess of males and the reproductive success, recruitment, and survival probabilities of both sexes. Female-female competition for territorial vacancies was likely to be intense as the floating population was female-biased and intrasexual agonistic interactions were frequently observed. In this competitive population, larger adult females were more likely to be recruited, indicating directional selection favoring increased female body size. Furthermore, after recruitment larger females were more likely to successfully fledge offspring, providing a mechanism by which RSD is maintained in the population. In contrast, male recruitment was unrelated to either body size or condition indices. Smaller immature males more often held their territories (survived) over two breeding seasons than did their larger counterparts; however...

After knowing about their illness, women with breast cancer start to deal with new forms of perception of their own bodies, specially when modified by mastectomy (breast surgery). This medical procedure has profound impact in body formation. Considering the symbolic and social representations that involve the woman’s body and the association of breasts with femininity, sexuality and maternity, I intend to demonstrate in this article how the idea of a female body and the roles associated with it were historical, social and culturally constructed in our society. I also investigate how the symbolic representations of that female body are perceived and re-elaborated by the woman with breast cancer through (sometimes ambiguous) narratives and perceptions, which are, later, used to understand their body after experiencing the illness. The research was accomplished with women of two groups of mutual aid in the city of Campina Grande, PB.; http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0104-026X2009000100004As mulheres atingidas pelo câncer de mama passam, a partir da experiência da enfermidade, a travar novas relações com o corpo modificado pela cirurgia de mama (mastectomia), que provoca profundas alterações corporais. http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-8026.2015v68n2p67“Mateship”, or companionship and loyalty in adverse situations, was a common theme for late 19th century Australian short stories. Women are excluded from the practice of mateship and are not usually the protagonists of these narratives, being either kept in the background as mothers and housewives, or not present at all in the plots.  Going against these stereotypes, in Barbara Baynton’s story “Squeaker’s Mate”, the “mate” is an independent, strong and hard-working woman. Baynton explores the gloomy consequences of this reversal of expected gender roles, especially after an accident leaves the protagonist paralysed and no longer in control of her body. What occurs in “Squeaker’s Mate” is a kind of “anti-mateship”, where irony serves as a device to expose gender relations and the exclusion of women from what is traditionally considered heroic and historical. In “Squeaker’s Mate”, Baynton questioned the adoption of “mateship” as an Australian value more than half a century before that discussion started to draw formal critical attention.

http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-8026.2015v68n3p147Three bestsellers published in the last ten years – Twilight (2005), The Hunger Games (2008) and Fifty Shades of Grey (2011) – present an impressive deal of violence against the female body, a fact that demands investigation considering it may shape their readers’ views on this. Therefore, this work aims at analyzing the discourses on violence against the female protagonist’s body through the study of linguistic features in extracts from those three books. The analysis is done under the light of Critical Discourse Analysis, verifying the discourses embedded in this violence and the repercussions these discourses may have in terms of perpetuating gender stereotypes, especially in literature. More specifically, the focus of this study is on the “justifications” for the violence against women and if these justifications come from and/or consolidate hegemonic ways of thinking regarding this subject.
