Generally, the traditional building techniques uses natural and local building materials such as stone, woodand earth and, are associated to building procedures that requires small amount of energy consumption and release an expressive noxious gases to atmosphere. The development of green building techniques that help the building industry contributing to a much more sustainable world may be inspired on these traditional building techniques as models. Each sector of societies including ourselves should pay a bill for environmental damaging. Each construction should have as associated environmental damaging cost and the selection process of a construction design solution should also be done in a sustainable bases in which the environmental parameters should be clearly identified and quantified. The tabique is one of the main Portuguese traditional building techniques, which is based on raw materials as earth and wood. In general, a tabique wall is formed by a simple timber structure covered by an earth based material. Earth has an important role in this system because it protects the internal timber structure as well as is a finishing. The Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro is the northeast region of Portugal and it is very rich in terms of tabique heritage construction. Meanwhile...

Considering the importance given to creativity and to cooperative and active learning as facilitator methods of an Inclusive Education, on this paper we present a study that identifies the place given to active and expressive techniques in the initial training of educators/teachers. The Higher Education Institutions that provide training components within the inclusive education, active and expressive techniques were identified, characterizing those same components by analyzing the curricula of all courses of Initial Teacher Education in Portugal which qualify for teachers from pre-school education to the 2nd cycle of basic education. Data analysis will allow us to further reflect on the contribution of these areas to build positive models of Inclusive Education.

Tese de mestrado, Desenho, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas Artes, 2013; The Divine Comedy is one of the most illustrated literary works of all time, however, and within this vast subject, there are few records of illustration about this text in Portugal. This study aims to explore the possibilities of the illustration of Hell through a technique that until now has been poorly investigated, and to solve the problems faced in its use. Hell was shown in its entirety for the first time in Portugal by António Carneiro, through forty-two drawings. This project also intends to publicize his drawing project and to further enrich a little the existing studies of this work which, unfortunately and so far, have received little attention and few publications. This existing documentation, allowed us to address issues relating to the origin, motives and methods used by António Carneiro, and to establish a connection with the end result of these drawings which, along with several other works of the various illustrators of Dante, constituted the support of this research. This work placed its emphasis on the strategies of representation with the aim of providing a different view, looking for expressive techniques appropriate to the illustration of Hell...

International university students often experience acculturative stress, and culturally appropriate techniques to manage stress are needed. This randomized trial tested the effects of group assertiveness training, private expressive writing, their combination, and a wait-list control on the acculturative stress, affect, and health of 118 international students at an urban, American university. Interventions were conducted at the start of a semester, and assessments were conducted at baseline and the end of the semester. Group assertiveness training was rated positively by students and led to lower negative affect, whereas expressive writing was less well received and led to higher homesickness and fear, but also higher positive affect. The combined intervention had no effects, perhaps because the two components negated each other. It is concluded that group assertiveness training improves emotional adjustment of international students, but expressive writing has mixed effects and needs further development and study.

Supportive and expressive techniques in psychotherapy can be located on a continuum. Traditionally, psychotherapy has been oriented toward the expressive end of the continuum, applying the model of psychoanalytic or expressive therapy to all therapy. The authors propose that for most patients, the model for individual dynamic psychotherapy should be based on concepts from the supportive end of the continuum.

We explore the inference of expressive human-readable declassification policies as a step towards providing practical tools and techniques for strong language-based information security. Security-type systems can enforce expressive information-security policies, but can require enormous programmer effort before any security benefit is realized. To reduce the burden on the programmer, we focus on inference of expressive yet intuitive information-security policies from programs with few programmer annotations. We define a novel security policy language that can express what information a program may release, under what conditions (or, when) such release may occur, and which procedures are involved with the release (or, where in the code the release occur). We describe a dataflow analysis for precisely inferring these policies, and build a tool that instantiates this analysis for the Java programming language. We validate the policies, analysis, and our implementation by applying the tool to a collection of simple Java programs.; Engineering and Applied Sciences

A real-time motion engine for interactive synthetic characters, either virtual or physical, needs to allow expressivity and interactivity of motion in order to maintain the illusion of life. Canned animation examples from an animator or motion capture device are expressive, but not very interactive, often leading to repetition. Conversely, numerical procedural techniques such as Inverse Kinematics (IK) tend to be very interactive, but often appear "robotic" and require parameter tweaking by hand. We argue for the use of hybrid example-based learning techniques to incorporate expert knowledge of character motion in the form of animations into an interactive procedural engine. Example-based techniques require appropriate distance metrics, statistical analysis and synthesis primitives, along with the ability to blend examples; furthermore, many machine learning techniques are sensitive to the choice of representation. We show that a quaternion representation of the orientation of a joint affords us computational efficiency along with mathematical robustness, such as avoiding gimbal lock in the Euler angle representation. We show how to use quaternions and their exponential mappings to create distance metrics on character poses, perform simple statistical analysis of joint motion limits and blend multiple poses together. We demonstrate these joint primitives on three techniques which we consider useful for combining animation knowledge with procedural algorithms: 1) pose blending...

This thesis addresses the problem of the lack of verisimilitude in animation. Since computer vision has been aimed at creating photo-realistic representations of environments and face recognition creates replicas of faces for recognition purposes, we research face recognition techniques to produce photo-realistic models of expressive faces that could be further developed and applied in animation. We use two methods that are commonly used in face recognition to gather information about the subject: 3D scanners and multiple 2D images. For the latter method, Maya is used for modeling. Both methods produced accurate 3D models for a neutral face, but Maya allowed us to manually build 3D models and was therefore more successful in creating exaggerated facial expressions.; by Tufool Al-Nuaimi.; Thesis (M. This submission for the degree of Master of Music at the Elder Conservatorium of Music explores, through the medium of performance, ways in which classical guitarists can enhance the expressive nuances in their playing. In the twentieth century, despite the numerous refinements in guitar technique [particularly in areas regarding speed and volume), the high degree of 'polish' in classical guitar performance practice is such that some of the subtleties of expression have been diminished. Through an exploration of recordings from leading classical guitarists, and subsequent analysis of their use of expressive techniques, I have found ways to apply them in my own performance. Within this portfolio of two CD recordings [the first of which contains Spanish Nationalist/Romantic repertoire and the second works by Dowland, Bach and BrittenJ and supporting exegesis, I explore the effectiveness of various technical and musical tools that the guitarist may employ for greater expressivity. The most significant observations from aural analysis, both of my own and others' recordings, are that the most 'expressive' interpretations result when a combination of several techniques are used simultaneously, and that slower tempi and a greater length of time preparing the work allow for more expressive possibilities.; Thesis (M.Mus.) -- University of Adelaide...

When faced with the task of designing and implementing a new self-aware and self-expressive computing system, researchers and practitioners need a set of guidelines on how to use the concepts and foundations developed in the Engineering Proprioception in Computing Systems (EPiCS) project. This report provides such guidelines on how to design self-aware and self-expressive computing systems in a principled way. We have documented different categories of self-awareness and self-expression level using architectural patterns. We have also documented common architectural primitives, their possible candidate techniques and attributes for architecting self-aware and self-expressive systems. Drawing on the knowledge obtained from the previous investigations, we proposed a pattern driven methodology for engineering self-aware and self-expressive systems to assist in utilising the patterns and primitives during design. The methodology contains detailed guidance to make decisions with respect to the possible design alternatives, providing a systematic way to build self-aware and self-expressive systems. Then, we qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated the methodology using two case studies. The results reveal that our pattern driven methodology covers the main aspects of engineering self-aware and self-expressive systems...

Description Logics (DLs) are a family of knowledge representation formalisms mainly characterised by constructors to build complex concepts and roles from atomic ones. Expressive role constructors are important in many applications, but can be computationally problematical. We present an algorithm that decides satisfiability of the DL ALC extended with transitive and inverse roles and functional restrictions with respect to general concept inclusion axioms and role hierarchies; early experiments indicate that this algorithm is well-suited for implementation. Additionally, we show that ALC extended with just transitive and inverse roles is still in PSPACE. We investigate the limits of decidability for this family of DLs, showing that relaxing the constraints placed on the kinds of roles used in number restrictions leads to the undecidability of all inference problems. Finally, we describe a number of optimisation techniques that are crucial in obtaining implementations of the decision procedures, which, despite the worst-case complexity of the problem, exhibit good performance with real-life problems.

The proliferation of contextualized knowledge in the Semantic Web (SW) has led to the popularity of knowledge formats such as \emph{quads} in the SW community. A quad is an extension of an RDF triple with contextual information of the triple. In this paper, we study the problem of query answering over quads augmented with forall-existential bridge rules that enable interoperability of reasoning between triples in various contexts. We call a set of quads together with such expressive bridge rules, a quad-system. Query answering over quad-systems is undecidable, in general. We derive decidable classes of quad-systems, for which query answering can be done using forward chaining. Sound, complete and terminating procedures, which are adaptations of the well known chase algorithm, are provided for these classes for deciding query entailment. Safe, msafe, and csafe class of quad-systems restrict the structure of blank nodes generated during the chase computation process to be directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) of bounded depth. RR and restricted RR classes do not allow the generation of blank nodes during the chase computation process. Both data and combined complexity of query entailment has been established for the classes derived. We further show that quad-systems are equivalent to forall-existential rules whose predicates are restricted to ternary arity...

Internet search results are a growing and highly profitable advertising platform. Search providers auction advertising slots to advertisers on their search result pages. Due to the high volume of searches and the users' low tolerance for search result latency, it is imperative to resolve these auctions fast. Current approaches restrict the expressiveness of bids in order to achieve fast winner determination, which is the problem of allocating slots to advertisers so as to maximize the expected revenue given the advertisers' bids. The goal of our work is to permit more expressive bidding, thus allowing advertisers to achieve complex advertising goals, while still providing fast and scalable techniques for winner determination.; Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, ICDE 2008

On one hand, compared with traditional relational and XML models, graphs have more expressive power and are widely used today. On the other hand, various applications of social computing trigger the pressing need of a new search paradigm. In this article, we argue that big graph search is the one filling this gap. To show this, we first introduce the application of graph search in various scenarios. We then formalize the graph search problem, and give an analysis of graph search from an evolutionary point of view, followed by the evidences from both the industry and academia. After that, we analyze the difficulties and challenges of big graph search. Finally, we present three classes of techniques towards big graph search: query techniques, data techniques and distributed computing techniques.

In this paper we first survey the three major types of computer music systems based on AI techniques: compositional, improvisational, and performance systems. Representative examples of each type are briefly described. Then, we look in more detail at the problem of endowing the resulting performances with the expressiveness that characterizes human-generated music. This is one of the most challenging aspects of computer music that has been addressed just recently. The main problem in modeling expressiveness is to grasp the performer’s “touch”; that is, the knowledge applied when performing a score. Humans acquire it through a long process of observation and imitation. For this reason, previous approaches, based on following musical rules trying to capture interpretation knowledge, had serious limitations. An alternative approach, much closer to the observation-imitation process observed in humans, is that of directly using the interpretation knowledge implicit in examples extracted from recordings of human performers instead of trying to make explicit such knowledge. In the last part of the paper we report on a performance system, SaxEx, based on this alternative approach, capable of generating high quality expressive solo performances of Jazz ballads based on examples of human performers within a case-based reasoning system.; "AI and Music..." is partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology under project TIC 2000-1094-C02...
