Os Sistemas Supervisórios (SS) executam diversas funções vitais em um processo automatizado e também operam como interface homem-máquina. Os mesmos recebem informações de dispositivos como Controladores Lógicos Programáveis (CLP), inversores de freqüência, etc, e ao mesmo tempo enviam parâmetros de controle fornecidos pelos operadores do processo aos equipamentos de controle. Na operação de SS, a atuação correta e a experiência dos operadores humanos é portanto também vital no controle do processo automatizado. Em recente trabalho(Andrade-2001) de pesquisa na Escola Politécnica da USP foi desenvolvido um Sistema Especialista para operar em tempo real com Sistemas Supervisórios para auxiliar na tomada de decisão dos operadores do sistema. Ao longo do tempo de operação de uma planta automatizada ocorrem novas situações que passam a compor os novos cenários do sistema e também contribuem para o aumento do conhecimento e da experiência dos operadores humanos. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is twofold: to analyze the computational complexity of the cogeneration design problem; to present an expert system to solve the proposed problem, comparing such an approach with the traditional searching methods available.Design/methodology/approach - The complexity of the cogeneration problem is analyzed through the transformation of the well-known knapsack problem. Both problems are formulated as decision problems and it is proven that the cogeneration problem is np-complete. Thus, several searching approaches, such as population heuristics and dynamic programming, could be used to solve the problem. Alternatively, a knowledge-based approach is proposed by presenting an expert system and its knowledge representation scheme.Findings - The expert system is executed considering two case-studies. First, a cogeneration plant should meet power, steam, chilled water and hot water demands. The expert system presented two different solutions based on high complexity thermodynamic cycles. In the second case-study the plant should meet just power and steam demands. A supervisory expert system based on fuzzy logic rules was developed for diagnosis and control of a lab- scale plant comprising anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic modules for combined high rate biological N and C removal. The design and implementation of a computational environment in LabVIEW for data acquisition, plant operation and distributed equipment control is described. The Fuzzy Logic toolbox for MATLAB was also used for the development of the fuzzy logic rule based system. The fuzzy rules were generated from quantitative and qualitative information, to identify the status of the plant operation and to decide the best commands to be sent to the final control elements to recover the stable operation in case of disturbances of the processes. A step increase in ammonia concentration from 20 to 60 mg N/L was applied during a trial period of 73 hours. Recycle flow rate from the aerobic to the anoxic module and by-pass flow rate from the influent directly to the anoxic reactor were the output of the fuzzy system that were automatically changed (from 34 to 111 L/day and from 8 to 13 L/day, respectively), when new plant conditions were recognized by the expert system. Denitrification efficiency higher than 85% was achieved 30 hours after the disturbance and 15 hours after the system response at an HRT as low as 1.5 hours. Nitrification efficiency gradually increased from 12 to 50% at an HRT of 3 hours. Portugal has recently become one the few European countries to fully acknowledge Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); this substantial paradigm shift calls for novel tools for TCM practitioners, students and patients alike. This paper describes an Expert System for supporting the TCM consultation process – both in terms of gathering and managing the patients’ personal and symptomatic data, and of obtaining accurate diagnoses and treatments under regulated and reviewed protocols. The proposed tool was designed and is being developed with the support of two TCM therapists, which act as experts and provide aid to the processes of building the knowledge base and the automatic diagnosis system. In terms of architecture, the current version of the framework includes a mobile client application for the Android platform, integrated with an online spreadsheet. A survey was conducted in order to assess some of the needs of the community of TCM practitioners, and allowed gathering information on their needs.

... A legal expert system called SHYSTER has been developed to demonstrate that a useful legal expert system can be based upon a pragmatic approach to the law. SHYSTER has a simple representation structure which simplifies the problem of knowledge acquisition. Yet this structure is complex enough for SHYSTER to produce useful advice. ¶ SHYSTER is a case-based legal expert system (although it has been designed so that it can be linked with a rule-based system to form a hybrid legal expert system). Its advice is based upon an examination of, and an argument about, the similarities and differences between cases. SHYSTER attempts to model the way in which lawyers argue with cases, but it does not attempt to model the way in which lawyers decide which cases to use in those arguments. Instead, it employs statistical techniques to quantify the similarity between cases. It decides which cases to use in argument, and what prediction it will make, on the basis of that similarity measure. ¶ SHYSTER is of a general design: it provides advice in areas of case law that have been specified by a legal expert using a specification language. Digital soil mapping (DSM) offers apparent benefits over more labour-intensive and costly traditional soil survey. Large cartographic scale (e.g. 1 : 10 000 scale) soil maps are rare in Australia, especially in agricultural areas where they are needed to support detailed land evaluation and targeted land management decisions. We describe a DSM expert system using environmental correlation that applies a priori knowledge from a key area (128 ha) soil–landscape with a regionally repeating toposequence to predict the distribution of saline–sodic subsoil patterns in the surrounding upland farming region (2275 ha) in South Australia. Our predictive framework comprises interrelated and iterative steps, including: (i) consolidating a priori knowledge of the key area soil–landscape; (ii) refining existing mentally held and graphic soil–landscape models; (iii) selecting suitable environmental covariates compatible with geographic information systems (GIS) by interrogation via 3D visualisation using a GIS; (iv) transforming the existing soil–landscape models to a computer model; (v) applying the computer model to the environmental variables using the expert system; (vi) performing the predictive mapping; and (vii) validation. This thesis perpetuates research aimed at deploying a diagnostic expert system for the MK 92 Mod 2 Fire Control System to 28 Oliver Hazard Perry class fast frigates. Referred to as the Maintenance Advisor Expert System (MAES) , this expert system is being jointly developed by the Naval Postgraduate School and Port Hueneme Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC PHD). However, the data analysis for the installation of a determined compensator mainly considers a particular power quality index or disturbance and it is usually based on human expertise. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel expert system that automatically suggests the most appropriate and cost-effective solution for compensating reactive, harmonic and unbalanced current through a careful analysis of several power quality indices and some grid characteristics. Such an expert system is an important tool in real-world applications, where there is a complex scenario in choosing, designing and applying power quality compensators in modern power grids. The research constitutes a knowledge-based approach to land evaluation for selecting suitable agricultural crops for a land unit. This thesis presents the design, and development of a prototype Knowledge-based Spatial Decision Support System (KBSDSS) -“Crop Advisor”- for evaluating land resources and choosing suitable agricultural crops for a farm unit. The prototype “Crop Advisor” expert system (ES) utilises multiple knowledge rules to determine suitable, optimal crops for a farm unit considering the farm unit’s resources. This is evidenced by its widespread use in industrial and military applications ranging from deep-ocean exploration to anti-submarine warefare. The Naval Postgraduate School In conjunction with Port Hueneme Division (PHD), Naval Surface Warfare Center is developing a diagnostic expert system for troubleshooting casualties in the MK 92 MOD 2 fire control system deployed in US Navy Oliver Hazard class (FFG-7) guided missile frigates. The high turnover rate of student developers and the frequency with which changes are made to the expert system have highlighted a need for controlling the change process and the management of resources applied to implementing those changes to the expert system's knowledge base and software. This thesis develops a configuration management plan for the MK92 Maintenance Advisor Expert System (MK92 MAES) to assist object members in the management of changes to software and domain knowledge. The concept of configuration management is examined in detail with specific emphasis on the challenges of its implementation to expert systems. Two automated configuration management tools, CCC/Manager and PVCS Version Control, are evaluated for suitability for application in an expert system development environment. Legal expert systems are the nexus of Artificial Intelligence and the law. A legal expert system is "a system capable of performing at a level expected of a lawyer" [Popple 1996, page 3]. Legal expert systems may be designed for use by legally trained people or for use by the general public ("lay-people"). Legal expert systems designed for use by legally trained people aim to provide a method of speeding-up the provision, and improving the accuracy, of legal research undertaken with the aim of advising the client. Designed for use by legally trained people, these systems may assume general legal knowledge. Consequently the questions asked by the system and the reports returned may be stated at a level appropriate for legally trained people. The primary benefit of this category of legal expert system is the reduction of internal cost of legal research. The flow-on benefits for clients reductions in the cost of legal services and consequently improved access to quality representation, and reduction of the time taken to resolve a legal question. Legal expert systems designed for use by lay-people aim to provide greater access to the law. Este trabalho apresenta os princípios básicos utilizados no desenvolvimento de um sistema especialista para síntese de cavernas de embarcações. Uma fatia do navio, contendo o anel transversal a ser analisado, é extraída do restante da estrutura e modelada como bidimensional. A interação da fatia com a estrutura longitudinal é feita considerando os elementos longitudinais pesados como apoios elásticos nos pontos de interseção com a fatia. Musical performance practice during the Baroque period (approximately 1600 - 1750) required that a solo performer be adept at adding extemporaneous variations on the composer's original melody during performance. Atypically, George Phillip Telemann, in his "Methodical Sonatas", provided, along with the original melody line, a written-out variation of that line. Using knowledge of the Baroque style in general and that gleaned from an analysis of Telemann's variations in particular, this expert system models a Baroque musician's (expert's) process of creating such variations. The variation process (programmed in Prolog) involves transformations to a list structure which represents the piece. The system "chooses" these transformations based on general rules, rhythmic and melodic vocabularies, and the harmonic framework of the specific piece. In addition, global musical considerations such as the duplication of musical sequences found in the original and the creation of overall musical continuity are addressed during the generation process through a multiple viewpoints approach. This study addresses the problems of knowledge acquisition in expert system development examines programs whose goal is to solve part of these problems. Among them are knowledge acquisition tools, which provide the knowledge engineer with a set of Artificial Intelligence primitives, knowledge acquisition aids, which offer to the knowledge engineer a guidance in knowledge elicitation, and finally, automated systems, which try to replace the human interviewer with a machine interface. We propose an alternative technique to these approaches: an interactive syntactic analyzer of an emerging knowledge base written with the expert system shell called Nexpert Object. This program intends to help the knowledge engineer during the editing of a knowledge base, both from a knowledge engineering and a knowledge representation point of view. The XML Expert System Shell (XESS) was designed to alleviate some of the difficulties associated with translating a knowledge base from one expert system to another. The major goal of XESS is to allow programmers to model an expert system, complete with traditional facts and rules, in an XML-based language that leverages the universally understood terms used when teaching artificial intelligence to students. XML, the extensible markup language, is a text-based standard for information interchange between disparate systems1; it was originally designed to represent data in an easily parsable, human readable format2. Faghri, Ardeshir; Intersections are among the most dangerous points in a transportation network. Both shortcomings in design and human error contribute to the frequency of crashes at intersections. In this thesis, a knowledge based expert system is created to assist engineers and transportation officials in the process of improving the safety at rural, unsignalized intersections. Currently, the process of identifying countermeasures for rural, unsignalized intersections with a chronic safety problem involves a great deal of experience and subjective assessments. The knowledge based expert system developed attempts to provide a more logical progression of the intersection safety process and incorporate quantitative assessments of potential options. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials??? (AASHTO) 2010 publication, the Highway Safety Manual seeks to provide the first quantitative assessment of intersection safety countermeasures. O jornalismo é visto como um sistema perito, isto é, um sistema de excelência técnica cuja efetividade repousa na confiança depositada por seus consumidores. A partir daí, busca-se estabelecer a centralidade da imprensa nos processos políticos contemporâneos e o desafio que ela lança ao ordenamento democrático.; The article analyses the press (understood as news' diffusion by any means) making use of Anthony Giddens' concepts in The consequences of modernity. The press is seen as an expert system, that is, a system with technique excellence, whose efficacy depends on the trust of its consumers. From this observation, the article searches to establish the centrality of the press in contemporary political procedures and the defiance it introduces to the democratic order.
