The essay intends an evaluation of Valério Vieiras importance to the History of Brazilian photography through his portraits and photographic experimentation. Valério can be seen as a unique professional...

Experimental testbeds for evaluating solutions in computer networks, are today required as a complement to simulation and emulation. As these testbeds become larger, and accessible to a broader universe of the research community, dedicated management tools become mandatory. These tools ease the complex management of the testbed specific resources, while providing an environment for researchers to define their experiments with large flexibility. While there are currently several management tools, the research community is still lacking tools that smooth the experimentation workflow. These were key aspects that we considered when developing the management infrastructure for our wireless testbed[4] (AMazING). We developed a experimentation support framework supported by an attractive GUI, automation and scripting capabilities, as well as experiment versioning and integrated result gathering and analysis.

We study signal-dependent experimentation in the presence of accumulation and show that the passive-learner’s action surprisingly coincides with the experimentor’s when the unknown term is the one determining the decay rate of the stock, while they differ when the parameter being learned is the one measuring the accumulation rate. These results highlight the importance of the dynamic structure of the problem in signal-dependent experimentation. Moreover, they have important consequences for the pollution-accumulation debate currently in progress.

Animal experimentation, besides a research method extensively applied in the production of scientific knowledge, is also considered essential to science and with undeniable historical relevance in advances in human health. In this survey, a questionnaire was applied to a group of researchers involved with research based on non-animal models (n =18), and to another group involved with research based on animal models (n =18). The data analysis was grounded in Ludwik Fleck (1896 -1961) epistemological assumptions. The results suggested that there are at least two thought styles operating in consonance on the same research problem (advances in human health conditions) with significantly different conceptions not only concerning the research practices involved, but also the historical conceptions related to the role of animal experimentation.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence and social, psychological and environmental-structural determinants of tobacco experimentation among adolescents in Shanghai, China. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study based on a two-stage cluster sample design by using the Chinese version of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) to investigate smoking behavior among 19,117 students from 41 junior and senior high schools in Shanghai, China. The association between potential factors and tobacco experimentation were assessed using complex samples procedure logistic regression. Results: Of the 19,117 respondents, 10.5% (15.3% boys and 6.2% girls) reported the tobacco experimentation. The main social, psychological, and environmental-structural factors associated with tobacco experimentation were having close friends who smoke (AOR = 8.21; 95% CI: 6.49–10.39); one or both parents smoking (AOR 1.57; CI: 1.39–1.77); a poor school tobacco control environment (AOR 1.53; CI: 1.37–1.83); a high acceptance level of tobacco use (AOR 1.44; CI: 1.28–1.82); and a high level of media tobacco exposure (AOR 1.23; CI: 1.10–1.37). Peer smoking might contribute to smoking experimentation among girls (AOR 8.93; CI: 5.84–13.66) more so than among boys (AOR 7.79; CI: 5.97–9.94) and media tobacco exposure had no association with tobacco experimentation among female students. Conclusions: Social...

This Thesis presents a brief historic of experimentation, its application in secondary schools and the justification for the alternative material utilised during the activities of experimentation. Some playful conceptual aspects, its presentation and its application at school are also described with the aim of observing the existence of the relations between the playful and the activities of experimentation. Referring to the method, we have opted for the method study of multiple cases, aiming to conduct a comparison amongst several students and schools that utilise different experiments in an attempt to relate the similarities to the context of the research focus. The development in the application of the activities of experimentation is described in different groups from three secondary schools, two being in the city of Dourados-MS and one in the city of Goiânia- GO. This paper also presents an analysis of several articles related to experiments published by magazines such as Química Nova (New Chemistry) and Química Nova na Escola (New Chemistry at School), taking into consideration the following criteria: the availability of activities of experimentation for the teaching of chemistry, types of experimentation, laboratory material and reagents utilised...

The use of information and communication technologies in education for different school levels is becoming an usual practice. Concepts that many times are presented to the students from a static point of view are more easily apprehended when adequate technologies are used to give them greater dynamism. Bearing in mind the real difficulties in the implementation of an experimental teaching of Physics, it is possible nowadays to present to the students activities inserted in a context of new technologies that encourage the experimentation and the sense of discovery, two essential teaching aspects of the Experimental Sciences. The project “Topics of Physics in Virtual Experimentation” intends to promote the virtual experimentation in the classroom, through the exploration by the students of computational applications and the development of small investigation projects. All the materials will be available in the project site http:// fisicaexpvirtual.com.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)

This paper presents a low-cost scaled model of a silo for drying and airing cereal grains. It allows the control and monitor of several parameters associated to the silo's operation, through a remote accessible infrastructure. The scaled model consists of a 2.50 m wide × 2.10 m long plant with all control and monitor capacities provided by micro-Web servers. An application running on the micro-Web servers enables storing all parameters in a data basis for later analysis. The implemented model aims to support a remote experimentation facility for technological education, research-oriented tutorials, and industrial applications. Given the low-cost requirement, this remote facility can be easily replicated in other institutions to support a network of remote labs, which encompasses the concurrent access of several users (e.g. students).

In this paper the authors intend to demonstrate the utilization of remote experimentation (RE) using mobile computational devices in the Science areas of the elementary school, with the purpose to develop practices that will help in the assimilation process of the subjects taught in classroom seeking to interlink them with the daily students? activities. Allying mobility with RE we intend to minimize the space-temporal barrier giving more availability and speed in the information access. The implemented architecture utilizes technologies and freely distributed softwares with open code resources besides remote experiments developed in the Laboratory of Remote Experimentation (RExLab) of Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in Brazil, through the physical computation platform of the ?open hardware of construction of our own. The utilization of open code computational tools and the integration of hardware to the 3D virtual worlds, accessible through mobile devices, give to the project an innovative face with a high potential for reproducibility and reusability.

To demonstrate the inadequacies of informed consent in the contemporary context and the need for better subject protection, this paper begins by scrutinizing the rise of modern informed consent doctrine in international legal documents as well as in the United States arena. After examining the federal regulatory framework governing experimentation with human subjects, considerable attention is given to the doctrine of informed consent and its shortcomings in the research setting, including lack of competence to grant consent, misunderstandings and conflicts of interest between researcher and subject, and the doctrine's incompatibility with several dynamics of the patient-physician encounter. Flaws pertaining to both the research and therapeutic settings are also noted. IRBs' responsibilities for protecting subjects are then explored, along with the numerous factors preventing these bodies from providing adequate safeguards. The paper then discusses current regulations regarding various groups- the terminally ill, women, children, prisoners, and the decisionally/cognitively impaired, including psychiatric patients and the elderly- as well as considerations unique to each. This uncovers shortcomings of current informed consent doctrine and illustrates that meaningful consent can only be achieved by crafting procedures and policies specifically tailored to the needs of each particular population. The understanding about the utilization of experimental animals in scientific research and in teaching is many times a complex issue. Special attention needs to be paid to attain the understanding by the general public of the importance of animal experimentation in experimental research and in undergraduate medical teaching. Experimental teaching and research based on the availability of animals for experimentation is important and necessary for the personal and scientific development of the physician-to-be. The technological arsenal which intends to mimic experimentation animals and thus fully replace their use many times does not prove to be compatible with the reality of the living animal. The purpose of this paper is to discuss aspects concerning this topic, bringing up an issue which is complex and likely to arouse in-depth reflections.

Os dados sugerem que existem pelo menos dois estilos de pensamento operando em consonância sobre o mesmo problema de pesquisa (avanços nas condições de saúde humana), com concepções significativamente diferentes sobre as práticas de pesquisa envolvidas, assim como as concepções históricas relacionadas ao papel da experimentação animal.; Animal experimentation, besides a research method extensively applied in the production of scientific knowledge, is also considered essential to science and with undeniable historical relevance in advances in human health. Beyond the consecrated forms of history of art, their philosophical presuppositions and academic compromises, any critic that approaches artistic experimentation tests the culture of his time, exposing his subjectivity to the multiplicity of senses and the drives of his desire, without preconceived ideas of any kind of knowledge, truth or reason to conquer. This paper aims to explore the tensions that, at the level of aesthetic experience, are produced in our subjectivities every time we appreciate...
