In line with the conference Ethnografeast III. Ethnography and the Public Sphere, from which it stems, this issue aims at equating uses and products of ethnography as they relate with each other within the context of the public sphere. Keeping the conference’s commitment to interdisciplinarity, pluralism in genres and theoretical suasions, it focuses on the way political and civic uses of ethnography enter into the conceptual elaboration of its products, and, conversely, on how the design and implementation of ethnographic research may contribute to enhance public debate.; Em linha com a conferência “Ethnografeast III: Etnografia e Esfera Pública”, na qual teve origem, este dossier visa equacionar os usos e os produtos da etnografia e o modo como se articulam entre si na esfera pública.

This exploratory paper poses the following question: how has ethnography been used as logic of inquiry in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) research in Brazil? In order to start some discussion in this respect, a corpus comprised of thirty seven MA abstracts available at the online Bank of Theses of CAPES (Research and Graduate Teaching Support Coordination) was used to investigate how ethnography has been utilized as an orienting procedure in Brazilian research on EFL. The keywords language teaching, ethnography and ethnographic were chosen so as to select abstracts that were related to ethnography and language teaching, either as logic of inquiry, or as a methodological tool for collecting and analyzing data. The preliminary results have suggested that ethnography has mostly been adopted as an instrument for analysis rather than logic of inquiry, which (i) allows for the misunderstanding commonly arisen from research in this field of investigation and consequently (ii) points out that Foreign Language Teaching and Learning research should take into account more focused and clarified methodological designs under the umbrella of Qualitative Research.

Introduction to ethnographic practices: the study of and communicating about culture. Reading and discussion of classics of anthropological field work, contemporary critiques, and innovative practices. From the course home page: Course Description This course involves reading about how to do fieldwork, practicing fieldwork, reading ethnographies and about ethnography, and practicing writing ethnography. We will move from an overview of ethnography, to getting into the field, to writing fieldnotes, to analyzing data and writing a short ethnographic piece. We will, as you must in doing fieldwork and writing ethnographies, intersperse reading with fieldwork to theoretically inform both the fieldwork and the writing. The ethics of fieldwork and obligations to research subjects are discussed throughout the semester.

Studies on the interaction between company and consumer during the process of purchase involve complex situations that are too diffi cult to be understood by quantitative research. As a result, qualitative approach has gained a growing space in recent marketing research. A good example of it is ethnography, an approach that has been used in the studies about consumer behaviour. Hence, the objective of this study is to discuss ethnography along with another qualitative approach, grounded theory, as methodologies of research in relationship marketing in the consumer market (RMC) capable of grasping the internal dynamics of this phenomenon. The discussion is on how the use of these approaches can contribute for the scientifi c advancement of the RMC area and the conclusion is that its use is adequate as these research approaches, by focusing on subjective aspects, have the potential of revelling why consumers and companies involve themselves in exchange relationships

Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, Folklore and Ethnomusicology, 2015; ETHNOGRAPHY OF RESISTANCE POETICS: Power and Authority in Salale Oromo Folklore and Resistance Culture (Ethiopia, Northeast Africa) This dissertation is an interdisciplinary folkloristic search for resistance poetics in tradition-oriented folklore of the Salale Oromo in central Ethiopia using both a diachronic and a synchronic approach. The Salale are part of the Tulama branch of the Oromo nation who are engaged in a national liberation struggle. Drawing on critical ethnographic methods, this study provides a folkloristic outline of power and authority in the resistance culture of the people based on the data I collected in Salale in 2009 and 2010 through interviews, focus-group discussions, and participatory observations into the notion of “progressive folklore.” The data shows that the meaning of Salale resistance poetics transcends the ephemeral common understanding of the resistance concept. Here resistance is not used as shorthand just to refer to social protest, peasant rebellion, or more preferably, banditry; it is rather the poetics of emancipatory act. An emancipatory resistance is not simply a strategic plan to change the status quo...

In the text, the basis of ethnography are defined as a model of research in education. For this, the concept and foundations of ethnography are reviewed (its purpose, characteristics and the ethnographer’s role), the main parts of the ethnographical process are examined (negotiation and access to the field, field work, analysis of data, and drawing up the report), the main prospects in educational ethnography are analysed (holistic ethnography...

BACKGROUND: The post-anaesthetic care unit (PACU) is the first place that patients are taken following their operation and it is here that the initial recovery from their anaesthetic and surgery happens. Accordingly a significant proportion of the PACU nurse’s time is involved with the assessment and management of pain in the postoperative patient. Despite the implementation of standardised tools such as pain rating scales and medication protocols, the assessment and management of postoperative pain varies markedly from one patient to another in the PACU. Taking this into consideration, the researcher sought to understand how PACU nurses interpret pain assessment and management of the postoperative patient. AIM: To understand the processes PACU nurses utilise when assessing pain and implementing subsequent pain management in patients following surgery. METHODOLOGY: The qualitative approach of focused ethnography was used to frame this study. Focused ethnography was considered to best portray the perspectives of PACU nurses, as a culture, regarding the assessment and management of postoperative pain. METHODS: Ten PACU nurses were recruited from the PACU of a government hospital. The experience of the participants ranged from 3 years to more than 20 years in PACU nursing. James Spradley’s ethnographic research cycle was used to frame the research process. The research design employed two methods of data collection: participant observation and individual interviews. Collected data was transcribed and thematic analysis conducted. FINDINGS: Five themes emerged reflecting the perspectives of PACU nurses on the assessment and management of postoperative pain. These themes are: With Surgery Comes Pain; The Picture Beyond The Wound; Knowing; The Individual Experience; and Bridging Surgical Care. There are many complexities involved in assessing and managing postoperative pain in the PACU. Underpinning the five themes...

It is treated of an ethnography of the preaching affected pentecostal by the confession and memory of the anthropologist's experience pentecostal during the field work and writing of the text. This is an ethnography that is based on confession and memory of the experience of pentecostal conversion of a former native anthropologist during the fieldwork and writing the text. It is a survey on the conditions of possibility of ethnography affected in order to preach the pentecostal Cathedral Square in central São Paulo. Based on the theoretical and meth-odological background of my doctoral thesis in his-torical anthropology (Frehse 2004)...

This article presents reflections about the methodological process carried out by two researchers in the area of public health in search for contributions for their studies within ethnography. It also focuses on aspects of the ethnography in contemporary societies. From the field activities it depicts the construction of the researcher on the path of research, signaling some difficulties involved in trajectory. Thus this work suggests that the cooperation of the diverse kinds of knowledge is highly desirable given the complexity of the social phenomena of our time.

The relation between discourse and power in Brazilian immigration is complex. There is the public sphere with the State's immigration officials. There are also migrants in the intricacies of their worlds. Discourse and power refer to hierarchies of contexts and relations in which multiple truths are constructed vis à vis immigration. There is marked discrimination in the representation and evaluation of immigrants. Those with high investments or specialist knowledge are welcome whilst those who are socially underprivileged are valueless. All these issues can be considered through ethnography. This article is a debate on research that deals with categories pre-defined in the public agenda. It is supported by an experience of doing an anthropological study for the Tupinambá of Olivença aimed at the identification of a juridical category of “indigenous land” defined by the 1988 Constitution of Brazil. The main argument developed in this article starts with the assumption that in the contemporary situation the definition of public categories that involves cultural and social rights of minorities, such as terra indígena, have been defined in public debates in which anthropologists were involved. One of the necessary results of such a situation is that anthropology cannot see these categories as exogenous concepts to be criticized, but as categories of knowledge to be addressed. A detailed proposition of how I have addressed the issue concerning the delimitation of the seacoast border of the indigenous land of the Tupinambá of Olivença is here developed, showing how ethnography in anthropology is a particularly good device to achieve this challenges. Through the Tupinambá case, it is showed how ethnography as situated knowledge, enmeshed in a comparative project and prepared to incorporate the struggles that people face when dealing with conflict situations...

The extensive empirical research inspired by Piaget and Vygotsky's theories of make-believe play has been criticised for restricting data to Western, urban, middle-class children. We seek to redress this bias by researching the traditional black South African Pedi children's game Masekitlana. Our data relies on embodied memories enacted by Mapelo (one of the authors), and interviews with two other informants. The analytical framework draws upon 'emergent methods' in ethnography such as performance ethnography, auto-ethnography and memory elicitation through 'bodynotes' within a Vygotskyian orientation to play. The findings show that Masekitlana shares features common to all pretend play, but also exhibits others unique to it including: i) extended monologue, ii) metacommunicative frames for realistic thinking, an d iii) a complex relation between social and solitary play. These findings support Vygotsky. However, 'the long childhood' of Masekitlana suggests that the stages theory of Piaget, as well as Vygotskyian ideas that have come down to us via Cole and Scribner and Valsiner, require revision in the light of Bruner's two modes of cognition and Veresov's reinterpretation of the theatre movement within which Vygotsky's central ideas are embedded.

Some of the most important recent transformations in the ecological paradigm are the development of transdisciplinary syntheses between the social and natural sciences, the heuristic proposal of epistemological symmetry and the methodological dialogue with complexity studies. These transformations form the groundwork for a discussion of the contributions of anthropology to the new field of study of political ecology. After the delimitation of the sub-field of the "ethnography of socioenvironmental conflicts," the specific practices of multi-actor ethnography, which identifies and differentiates between social and "natural" actors, and of the use of multiple spatial and temporal levels of analysis are delineated. The article ends with a brief discussion of the academic, critical and policy implications of political ecology research.
