O mundo dos negócios hoje em dia está cada vez mais competitivo e os consumidores buscam de forma acelerada a satisfação de suas necessidades imediatas. Na sociedade do conhecimento, caracterizada pela alta competitividade e pela necessidade inerente de informações, torna-se necessária a adoção de estratégias que permitam a manutenção das vantagens competitivas sustentáveis adaptadas a cada modelo de negócio das corporações. A reorientação de um modelo de negócios utilizando os conceitos de Inteligência Estratégica Antecipativa é foco deste trabalho. Em relação aos procedimentos metodológicos, realizou-se um estudo de caso com uma pesquisa exploratória em um banco de dados interno no CRM da empresa estudada e em paralelo uma coleta de fichas de captação com clientes desta empresa. Estes dois bancos de dados foram inclusos no software Sphinx®. O resultado deste estudo foi a geração de três exemplos: O primeiro com o objetivo de testar se um grupo de palavras com destaque de aparições pode trazer pistas de serviços a serem criados pela empresa. O segundo tinha o objetivo de testar se palavras com aparição nas fichas de captação podem ter algum tipo de relação com aparições destas mesmas palavras na base de CRM dando assim pistas de novas tecnologias a serem aplicadas/desenvolvidas pela empresa. O terceiro tinha o objetivo de testar se um grupo de palavras vinculadas ao tema “serviços” e agrupadas por região do país poderiam sinalizar prioridade de investimento da empresa para geração de serviços adicionais aos usuários de seus softwares através de uma rede de representantes. Neste artigo, mostra-se como foi desenvolvida uma solução para organizar e facilitar a coleta, a gestão e a exploração de dados, visando a operacionalização dos conceitos de Inteligência Estratégica (IE) para apoiar a tomada de decisão de uma empresa de software na área médica. A IE consiste em coletar e usar informações pertinentes relativas ao ambiente sócioeconômico da empresa, visando criar oportunidades de negócios e antecipar problemas potenciais. Peat was taken from the Sergipe State, Brazil and characterized by several techniques: elemental and thermal analyses; Fourier infrared (FTIR) and solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies; scanning electron microscopy (SEM), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Also, the Sergipe State peat samples were compared with other peat sample from later from Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The lowest O/C and E 4/E 6 ratios and differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves of the Santo Amaro (SAO) sample indicated that this sample had the highest degree of decomposition. FTIR results showed that Itabaiana (ITA) and São Paulo (SAP) samples presented more prominent peak at 1086 cm -1 attributed the presence of Si-O than SAO sample spectra. The SAO sample showed two more intense peaks at 2920 cm -1 and 2850 cm -1. These results were corroborated by 13C NMR and thermal gravimetric (TG) where the relative abundance of the alkyl-C groups was greater in the SAO sample. The X-ray diffractometry (XRD) of SAO sample is characteristic of amorphous matter however, the SAP and ITA samples revealed the large presence of quartz mineral. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) showed that the surface of peat samples have porous granules of organic material. The ITA and SAP peat samples are alike while SAO peat sample is richer in organic material. Only the SAO sample has truthful characteristics of peat. This paper’s theme lies in the interaction between the organizational strategy and the environment of small companies and aims to analyze the relation between the scanning of environmental information, strategic behavior and performance. As a research method, the survey-type quantitative approach was used. The application of questionnaires and data analysis were also used alongside this method, using correlations and analysis of variance to verify the differences among companies classified as prospector, analyzer and defender, in their scanning efforts and use of information sources. The main results show that prospectors scan data from the competition as well as technological aspects and access written sources of information and internal sources of information more frequently than those that adopt another type of strategic behavior. Overall, the scanning of information sources was more associated with the performance than with the strategy measured by the strategic behavior typology.

AIMS—To demonstrate the value of environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) when used in combination with immunogold/silver enhancement methods as a valuable tool in ocular research, and to determine the phenotype of macrophages associated with the tunica vasculosa lentis while maintaining a topographical view of the lens surface.
METHODS—Prenatal and postnatal rat eyes were investigated by conventional scanning electron microscopy and ESEM. In the latter case tissues were prestained with a panel of antileucocyte monoclonal antibodies and visualised with colloidal gold conjugated secondary antibody followed by silver enhancement.
RESULTS—The preliminary data demonstrate that ED1+ ED2+ macrophages occur in large numbers around the lens and are associated with sectors of both normal vessels and those undergoing regression.
CONCLUSION—The present study demonstrates that ESEM is an ideal way to combine scanning electron microscopy with immunohistochemistry and is therefore likely to have multiple other applications in ocular research.

In this study, the effect of powder cellulose (PC) and 2 types of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC 101 and MCC 301) on pellet properties produced by an extrusion/spheronization process was investigated. The different investigated types of cellulose displayed different behavior during the extrusion/spheronization process. Pure PC was unsuitable for extrusion, because too much water was required and the added water was partly squeezed during the extrusion process. In contrast, MCC 101 and MCC 301 were extrudable at a wide range of water content, but the quality of the resulting products varied. In the extrusion/spheronization process, MCC 101 was the best substance, with easy handling and acceptable product properties. The properties of the extrudates and pellets were determined by Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectroscopy and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). FT-Raman spectroscopy was able to distinguish between the original substances and also between the wet and dried extrudates. The particle sizes of the raw material and of the extrudates were determined by ESEM without additional preparation. Imaging single epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) in intact cells is presently limited by the available microscopy methods. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) of whole cells in hydrated state in combination with specific labeling with gold nanoparticles was used to localize activated EGFRs in the plasma membranes of COS7 and A549 cells. The use of a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) detector yielded a spatial resolution of 3 nm, sufficient to identify the locations of individual EGFR dimer subunits. The sizes and distribution of dimers and higher order clusters of EGFRs were determined. The distance between labels bound to dimers amounted to 19 nm, consistent with a molecular model. A fraction of the EGFRs was found in higher order clusters with sizes ranging from 32–56 nm. ESEM can be used for quantitative whole cell screening studies of membrane receptors, and for the study of nanoparticle-cell interactions in general.

The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) provides a highly relevant and controllable environment in which to study hydrated systems without the artefacts of other highly prepared specimens. The instrument facilitates control of turgor through hydration using different chamber vapour pressures. Deformation of a simple plant tissue—upper epidermal layers in Allium cepa (onion)—was observed at the scale of the two principal failure mechanisms: cell breakage; and cell separation induced by treatment with a chelating agent. Cell rupture and release of contents occurred at cellular junctions ahead of an imposed growing notch, indicating that disruption of cells occurred remotely from the creation of a new surface. Cells that separated usually maintained their turgor and the separation process took place through progressive failure of middle lamellar material seen as strands between separating cells. These mechanisms were compared with the rupture of excised Chara corallina walls that occurred by formation and breakage of strands between separating wall layers. This study provides in situ visual characterization of wall rupture and cell separation at the microscopic level in hydrated plant material.

Analysis of Femtosecond Laser Assisted Capsulotomy Cutting Edges and Manual Capsulorhexis Using Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy

Purpose. To investigate the structure and irregularity of the capsulotomy cutting edges created by two femtosecond (FS) laser platforms in comparison with manual continuous circular capsulorhexis (CCC) using environmental scanning electron microscopy (eSEM). Methods. Ten anterior capsulotomies were obtained using two different FS laser cataract platforms (LenSx, n = 5, and Victus, n = 5). In addition, five manual CCC (n = 5) were obtained using a rhexis forceps. The specimens were imaged by eSEM (FEI Quanta 400, OR, USA). Objective metrics, which included the arithmetic mean deviation of the surface (Sa) and the root-mean-square deviation of the surface (Sq), were used to evaluate the irregularity of both the FS laser capsulotomies and the manual CCC cutting edges. Results. Several microirregularities were shown across the FS laser capsulotomy cutting edges. The edges of manually torn capsules were shown, by comparison of Sa and Sq values, to be smoother (P < 0.05) than the FS laser capsulotomy edges. Conclusions. Work is needed to understand whether the FS laser capsulotomy edge microirregularities, not seen in manual CCC, may act as focal points for the concentration of stress that would increase the risk of capsular tear during phacoemulsification as recently reported in the literature.

Proteus mirabilis is a common cause of catheter-associated urinary tract infections and frequently leads to blockage of catheters due to crystalline biofilm formation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has proven to be a valuable tool in the study of these unusual biofilms, but entails laborious sample preparation that can introduce artefacts, undermining the investigation of biofilm development. In contrast, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) permits imaging of unprocessed, fully hydrated samples, which may provide much insight into the development of P. mirabilis biofilms. Here, we evaluate the utility of ESEM for the study of P. mirabilis crystalline biofilms in situ, on urinary catheters. In doing so, we compare this to commonly used conventional SEM approaches for sample preparation and imaging. Overall, ESEM provided excellent resolution of biofilms formed on urinary catheters and revealed structures not observed in standard SEM imaging or previously described in other studies of these biofilms. In addition, we show that energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) may be employed in conjunction with ESEM to provide information regarding the elemental composition of crystalline structures and demonstrate the potential for ESEM in combination with EDS to constitute a useful tool in exploring the mechanisms underpinning crystalline biofilm formation.

Proteus mirabilis is a human pathogen able to form biofilms on the surface of urinary catheters. Little is known about P. mirabilis biofilms on natural or industrial surfaces and the potential consequences for these settings. The main aim of this work was to assess and compare the adhesion and biofilm formation of P. mirabilis strains from different origins on chitin and stainless steel surfaces within 4 to 96 h. Using environmental scanning electron microscopy, the biofilms of a clinical strain grown on chitin at 4 h showed greater adhesion, aggregation, thickness, and extracellular matrix production than those grown on stainless steel, whereas biofilms of an environmental strain had less aggregation on both surfaces. Biofilms of both P. mirabilis strains developed different structures on chitin, such as pillars, mushrooms, channels, and crystalline-like precipitates between 24 and 96 h, in contrast with flat-layer biofilms produced on stainless steel. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in the frequency of pillars and channels. Images of transmission electron microscopy demonstrated abundant fimbriae in 100 % of cells from both strains, which could be related to surface adherence and biofilm formation. This thesis investigates the fracturing and coalescence behavior in prismatic laboratory molded gypsum and Carrara marble specimens, which consist of either one or two preexisting open flaws, under uniaxial compression. In previous experimental studies, the determination of crack types (shear/tensile) was mainly based on the identification of fractographical features on the crack surfaces. In the present study, a high speed video system was used, which allowed one to precisely observe the cracking mechanisms.Seven crack types, which were characterized by different nature (shear/tensile) and orientations were identified to initiate from the pre-existing flaws in gypsum and marble in the present experimental study. Nine crack coalescence categories with different crack types and trajectories were also identified. The flaw inclination angle (beta), the ligament length (L), i.e. intact rock length between the flaws, and the bridging angle (a), i.e. the inclination of a line linking up the inner flaw tips, between two flaws, have all shown to have different effects on the coalescence patterns. 13 p. : il.; Giardia duodenalis is a human parasite that colonises the small intestine. In some studies, it may be necessary to estimate the parasite-host adhesion index. When working in vitro, it is very difficult to determine the relative number of parasites adhered to intestinal cells because parasites might be removed from enterocytes during specimen preparation. We have encountered such difficulties with sample analyses when using light and conventional scanning electron microscopy, including the loss of adherent cells during the processing steps. In this study, we showed that environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), which allows the examination of specimens at normal atmospheric pressure or in very low vacuum without any previous treatment, can be used effectively in quantitative studies of the parasitehost relationship.

Acid mine drainage is one of the main environmental problems associated with exposed tailings and waste rock that result from previous mining activity. As a result, surrounding waters become acidic and enriched with potentially toxic metals. We have collected five exposed tailing samples from one of the main tailings piles at the New Calumet Pb-Zn mine, Quebec, Canada, which operated from 1943 and 1968. The drainage from the tailings piles has been found to be neutral, and this may be due to sufficient carbonate in the tailings to neutralize acid produced by sulfide oxidation. However, with extended duration of exposure to both physical and chemical weathering, the percent volume of carbonate in the tailings piles could decrease allowing for acid drainage to develop. Paste pH tests were conducted onsite to evaluate the acidity of water interaction with the tailings. One sample demonstrated a low pH value of 2.2, however the other four samples ranged with values of 5.4 to 7.94. Samples were later analyzed for alteration rims and modal mineralogy using optical petrography, environmental scanning electron microscope, and mineral liberation analyses with automated mineralogy techniques. O monitoramento do ambiente pode ser entendido como o processo de busca de informações no ambiente externo, e sua importância para o estudo da estratégia reside no fato de se constituir em uma primeira ligação na cadeia de percepções e ações que permite à organização se adaptar ao seu ambiente podendo influir, portanto, no alcance de desempenho superior. Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a relação entre as práticas de monitoramento do ambiente e o desempenho em pequenas empresas. A pesquisa foi realizada em noventa e duas empresas com a aplicação de questionário com questões fechadas direcionado ao principal gestor ou proprietário do estabelecimento. Para as associações entre práticas de monitoramento e as características de porte, idade e desempenho, foi calculado o coeficiente de correção. Para testar a relação entre monitoramento e desempenho, a amostra foi ordenada pelos níveis de desempenho e subdividida em três grupos – empresas de baixo, médio e alto desempenho – realizando-se uma Análise de Variância – ANOVA. Os resultados corroboraram parcialmente os estudos que verificaram uma relação positiva entre práticas de monitoramento e o desempenho em empresas de pequeno porte. Tanto a frequência de monitoramento de aspectos do ambiente como a frequência de acesso de fontes de informação indicaram resultados associados com alguma das medidas de desempenho.; Environmental scanning is the process of searching for information in the external environment. This article aims to understand the importance of systematic environmental scanning in SMEs (small and medium enterprises), whereas the understanding of how companies seek and use information from the Internet is of great relevance to this process, keeping them more competitive in their market. For this was a literature review of environmental scanning, evaluating that several generic models are described in the literature, although many don’t direct their efforts for small and medium enterprises. The methodology used was a descriptive single case study to present the procedures performed by a company that uses data from the Internet in its environmental scanning, comparing the practice used with the steps of the model described in the literature. The results showed that the Internet is used as an important source for environmental scanning of this company, but the search for on-line information happens without systematic, intuitively and reactively. This article contributes to help SMEs to perceive the importance of scanning the environment and begin to adopt a formal model that systematizes the search and use of on-line information, making them more strategic to their business.; Este artigo tem como proposta compreender a importância da sistematização do monitoramento ambiental em PMEs (pequenas e médias empresas)...

This article presents a research where a Strategic Environmental Scanning methodology was used to scan anticipative signs related to the likely winner in the standard war between two rival and incompatible technologies: Blu-Ray from the group led by Sony and HD-DVD from the group led by Toshiba, considering only signs sent between July, 2006 and December, 2007. This research is based in the theoretical foundations of Network Economics and Competitive Intelligence, applying the concepts of the later in order to anticipate the outcome of a standard war based on the characteristics of Network Economics. The research was conducted by applying the Lesca Method (2003) in a process of Strategic Environmental Scanning, used in the preparation for information gathering and analysis. This paper explore an approach of environmental scanning, focusing on the step of analysis of information obtained in the process. The approach treated here, is related to the treatment of qualitative information, anticipative (weak signals or early warning signals). The step of information analysis, is called here sense-making and is confronted with theories and techniques of creativity to explore their contribution to the step of sense-making. A review of creativity theories is first presented and then the contributions of these theories to the environmental scanning processes is explored. From this review and from the association of these theories with the sense-making step, the paper concludes with research propositions.; En este artículo, se realiza un estudio exploratorio de monitoreo estratégico del ambiente, con enfoque especial en la etapa de análisis de las informaciones obtenidas en el proceso. El abordaje de monitoreo estratégico utilizado sirve al tratamiento de informaciones cualitativas de carácter anticipatorio (señales débiles o señales anticipatorias). Environmental scanning is the acquisition and use of information about the external business environment that can assist management in making decisions about the organization’s future courses of action. This article presents portion of the results of an investigation on 340 entrepreneurs in incubated and graduated firms. It was investigated if the entrepreneurs perceive their business environment and information sources differently and if they scan the environment more intensively considering their activities (if technological or not) and the stage of evolution of their firms (if incubated or not). It was discovered that technological entrepreneurs concentrate their attention in environmental events and trends which are more related to their activities, as compared with non-technological ones, which valorize more general environmental aspects. After finishing their incubation period, entrepreneurs tend to scan their business environment more intensively. While incubated, entrepreneurs find it easier to make initial contacts with personal and external information sources and consider the information acquired from these sources more relevant, which was credited to the mediation of business incubators and the social and informal learning networks that are formed. Academic and administrative implications are discussed and opportunities for future works are pointed out.; A monitoração ambiental (MA) é definida como a aquisição e o uso de informação sobre o ambiente externo que pode auxiliar a tomada de decisão a respeito dos futuros cursos de ação da organização. Este artigo apresenta parte dos resultados de uma pesquisa conduzida em todo o país com 340 empreendedores de empresas incubadas e graduadas. Procurou-se investigar se os empreendedores percebem o ambiente e as fontes de informação de forma diversificada e monitoram mais o ambiente em função de suas atividades (tecnológica ou não) e do estágio de evolução de suas empresas (incubadas ou não).
