Tree-ring characterization of Araucaria columnaris Hook and its applicability as a lead indicator in environmental monitoring

Tree-rings have frequently been used for dating of trees and to determine annual growth increments and forest dynamics, but little is known in tropical conditions about their utilization for environmental monitoring. This paper presents the results of Araucaria columnaris tree-ring characterization by wood anatomy and X-ray densitometric analysis and the determination of Pb concentration. Core samples from twelve araucaria trees were extracted from two sites exposed to air pollution due to intense traffic of vehicles and industrial activities. The tree-rings distinctly presented radial variation in early-latewood thickness and density, and characteristics of juvenile and mature wood. Anatomical and X-ray densitometric analysis were useful to delimit the tree-ring boundaries and to date the tree-rings, as well as to prove the annual formation. The lead concentration in annual araucaria tree-rings, analyzed with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, indicated the seasonal presence of the heavy metal in the environment during the 30 years studied, although the Pb did not affect tree growth. O presente trabalho tem como objetivos caracterizar os anéis de crescimento de árvores de A. columnaris, quanto a estrutura anatômica microscópica do lenho, a aplicação na determinação da idade, taxa de crescimento e o teor de Pb em uma seqüência de anéis de crescimento previamente datados. Visa, também, verificar o potencial da espécie no monitoramento ambiental, segundo as técnicas de dendroquímica, definida como a mensuração quanti e qualitativa dos micro e macronutrientes e de elementos traço nos anéis de crescimento das árvores, indicando mudanças retrospectivas na sua absorção e translocação. Foram selecionadas árvores de A. columnaris localizadas no “Campus Luiz de Queiroz” da ESALQ/USP, em dois sítios diferentes. O primeiro em área próxima à Avenida Centenário, caracterizado pelo intenso fluxo de veículos e constituindo-se em uma das principais vias de acesso aos bairros da cidade e às estradas estaduais. O segundo sítio localiza-se no interior do Campus da ESALQ, acerca de 150 m do primeiro sítio e em área de baixa pressão antrópica com as árvores consideradas como testemunha. Foram coletadas amostras do lenho das árvores, através de método não destrutível e feita a caracterização anatômica do lenho de acordo com as normas da AIWA e com o auxílio de um sistema de análise de imagens. As atividades de mineração são o suporte do crescimento e do desenvolvimento econômico da sociedade moderna. Por outro lado, estas atividades são causadoras de consideráveis modificações ambientais. Assim, faz-se necessário o desenvolvimento da Avaliação de Impacto Ambiental, que vise a definição de planos de controle ambiental que garanta a mitigação de tais impactos, bem como o seu monitoramento para verificação da eficácia das medidas definidas. Esta avaliação é uma exigência da Constituição Brasileira de 1988: toda atividade poluidora deve recuperar os danos causados ao meio ambiente. A obrigação de recuperar consiste em repor a área em uma situação de normalidade e estabilidade. Desta forma, algumas medidas mitigadoras, como a reposição vegetal e a reimplantação da fauna, estão sendo tomadas por alguns empreendimentos, as quais medidas necessitam ser monitoradas, a fim de permitir a avaliação de sua eficácia e evolução ao longo do tempo. Florações de cianobactérias tóxicas em corpos dágua doce usados como fonte para o consumo humano, recreação e irrigação são freqüentes nos dias de hoje devido à eutrofização destes ambientes. O monitoramento de linhagens tóxicas é importante para a prevenção dos efeitos adversos causados por suas toxinas na saúde de humanos e animais. Métodos rápidos e sensíveis para a detecção precoce das cianobactérias tóxicas em estações de tratamento de água e em programas de monitoramento de mananciais são de fundamental interesse para a prevenção desses efeitos. Atualmente, contagem de células, identificação de cianobactérias por microscopia óptica e análises químicas ou imunológicas das toxinas são usadas nos monitoramentos. O presente estudo tem por objetivo aplicar a análise dos anéis de crescimento de espécies arbóreas no monitoramento ambiental de uma área urbana com histórico de poluição atmosférica. Foram selecionadas árvores das espécies Caesalpinia pluviosa var. peltophoroides (Fabaceae-Caesalpinaceae) e Tabebuia pentaphylla (Bignoniaceae) e, do seu tronco, foram extraídas amostras do lenho através do método não destrutivo. A área de estudo selecionada foi o Distrito Industrial de Betel, município de Paulínia/SP, Brasil, cujo histórico de poluição ambiental de origem antropogênica é fornecido pela Companhia de Tecnologia de Saneamento Ambiental (CETESB) e através de estudos recentes encontrados na literatura especializada. Ainda, foram selecionas três outras áreas, nos municípios de Paulínia e Piracicaba, distantes em 10, 15 e 60 km, estabelecendo-se um gradiente ambiental de pressão antrópica. Este trabalho apresenta a concepção, o projeto, o desenvolvimento e a validação experimental de uma plataforma robótica bioinspirada o robô KA'I yxo com a habilidade de escalar árvores para aplicação em monitoramento ambiental. Tal motivação surgiu da necessidade crescente do estudo e do entendimento de ocorrências naturais pelas consequências envolvidas, muitas vezes trágicas. O monitoramento ambiental em larga escala e a dificuldade de acesso e cobertura de áreas significativas são fatores que indicam a importância e a utilidade de robôs nessas tarefas. O robô KA'I yxo possui como aplicação primeira uma solução para aquisição de dados de radiação solar, temperatura, umidade e altitude, de maneira que a mesma seja uma ferramenta útil para pesquisadores, aplicação esta identificada como relevante para a pesquisa na área ambiental após visitas ao Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia INPA. Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP); Higher plants are recognized as excellent genetic models to detect environmental mutagens and are frequently used in monitoring studies. Among the plant species, Alium cepa has been used to evaluate DNA damages, such as chromosome aberrations and disturbances in the mitotic cycle. Employing the A. cepa as a test system to detect mutagens dates back to the 40s. It has been used to this day to assess a great number of chemical agents, which contributes to its increasing application in environmental monitoring. The A. cepa is characterized as a low cost test. It is easily handled and has advantages over other short-term tests that require previous preparations of tested samples, as well as the addition of exogenous metabolic system. Higher plants, even showing low concentrations of oxidase enzymes and a limitation in the substrate specification in relation to other organism groups, present consistent results that may serve as a warning to other biological systems, since the target is DNA, common to all organisms. The A. cepa test also enables the evaluation of different endpoints. Among the endpoints, chromosome aberrations have been the most used one to detect genotoxicity along the years. The computational program called GIS_EM (Geographic Information System for Environmental Monitoring), a software devised to manage geographic information for monitoring soil, surface, and ground water, developed for use in the Health, Safety, and Environment Division of Paulinia Refinery is presented. This program enables registering and management of alphanumeric information pertaining to specific themes such as drilling performed for sample collection and for installation of monitoring wells, geophysical and other tests, results of chemical analyses of soil, surface, and groundwater, as well as reference values providing orientation for soil and water quality, such as EPA, Dutch List, etc. Management of such themes is performed by means of alphanumeric search tools, with specific filters and, in the case of spatial search, through the selection of spatial elements (themes) in map view. Documents existing in digital form, such as reports, photos, maps, may be registered and managed in the network environment. As the system centralizes information generated upon environmental investigations, it expedites access to and search of documents produced and stored in the network environment, minimizing search time and the need to file printed documents. Existem diversos sistemas e equipamentos, com finalidades específicas, envolvendo o monitoramento das mudanças de clima e de tempo. Entretanto, a maioria desses sistemas e equipamentos disponíveis no mercado possuem alto custo, o que normalmente inviabiliza sua utilização em larga escala. Além disso, a maioria dos sistemas e equipamentos para este fim são importados, o que dificulta ainda mais a sua inserção em aplicações corriqueiras. Este trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento, projeto, testes e aplicação de uma rede de sensores sem fio de baixo custo, para monitoramento em tempo real da temperatura ambiente, umidade relativa do ar e pressão atmosférica, como uma alternativa nacional para pesquisas que necessitem de equipamentos para monitoramento ambiental. Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal, vol. 22, n.1, March 2004, p. 47–62; Monitoring is fundamental to environmental impact assessment (EIA) both to assess adherence to standards and to support management options. The use of indicators assures that a monitoring program addresses only the key variables associated with significant environmental impacts and also improves monitoring communication and reporting processes. This paper develops a conceptual framework to design and assess an environmental post-decision monitoring program under EIA procedures – INDICAMP. It also discusses how current indicator frameworks can be used to design and evaluate the performance of environmental monitoring programs in projects. A coastal infrastructure case study demonstrates the usefulness of this methodology.

For this reason, officials and environmental managers are in need of suitable tools for visualization, manipulation and analysis of environmental data. Environmental concerns in Europe have encouraged the European Environmental Agency (EEA) to create the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (E-PRTR). The E-PRTR is vital and valuable because society will benefit if the data are used to improve monitoring and consequently advance environmental management. However, the data are not accessible in an interoperable way, which complicates their use and does not allow for a contribution to environmental monitoring. This paper describes a Web GIS system developed for the monitoring of industrial emissions using environmental data released by the EEA. The purpose of this research is design considerations for environmental monitoring platforms for the detection of hazardous materials using System-on-a-Chip (SoC) design. Design considerations focus on improving key areas such as: (1) sampling methodology; (2) context awareness; and (3) sensor placement. These design considerations for environmental monitoring platforms using wireless sensor networks (WSN) is applied to the detection of methylmercury (MeHg) and environmental parameters affecting its formation (methylation) and deformation (demethylation). ^ The sampling methodology investigates a proof-of-concept for the monitoring of MeHg using three primary components: (1) chemical derivatization; (2) preconcentration using the purge-and-trap (P&T) method; and (3) sensing using Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) sensors. This study focuses on the measurement of inorganic mercury (Hg) (e.g., Hg2+) and applies lessons learned to organic Hg (e.g., MeHg) detection. ^ Context awareness of a WSN and sampling strategies is enhanced by using spatial analysis techniques, namely geostatistical analysis (i.e., classical variography and ordinary point kriging), to help predict the phenomena of interest in unmonitored locations (i.e., locations without sensors). Since the late 1980s, mining agreements in Papua New Guinea contain a clause that says or implies that there should be something called social monitoring carried out around the mine site. This tends to be an addendum to the much more comprehensive environmental monitoring requirements. There is also a (somewhat reluctant) recognition within the industry that some form of social monitoring is ‘best practice’. In this paper I begin with my vision of where social monitoring in New Guinea is in terms of ‘best practice’. Two developments in social monitoring apparent over the last seven years are then discussed: greater community control over the monitoring programmes, and the apparent loss of interest in social monitoring by all parties involved, but primarily by the sponsors, the companies. Community-based environmental monitoring activities are increasing across Canada. In these activities, organizations undertake the assessment of a specific ecosystem attribute, such as a species or a species assemblage, to improve natural resource management. Indeed, this process has been widely acknowledged as critical in British Columbia’s salmon enhancement and assessment programs under the direction of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ Oceans Habitat Enhancement Branch. Through federal support of these initiatives, many community-based organizations are mobilizing on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. However, this increase in willing organizations does not guarantee that monitoring activities are benefiting the management of salmon stocks. Often, groups are unable to maintain a stable volunteer base or to collect data that is useable by resource managers. Long-term, continuous collection of environmental data is fundamental to the understanding of an aquatic system. This paper aims to present the integrated system for environmental monitoring (SIMA), a long-term temporal series system with a web-based archive for limnological and meteorological data. The following environmental parameters are measured by SIMA: chlorophyll-a (µgL-1), water surface temperature (ºC), water column temperature by a thermistor string (ºC), turbidity (NTU), pH, dissolved oxygen concentration (mg L-1), electric conductivity (µS cm-1), wind speed (ms-1) and direction (º), relative humidity (%), shortwave radiation (Wm-2) and barometric pressure (hPa). The data were collected in a preprogrammed time interval (1 hour) and were transmitted by satellite in quasi-real time for any user within 2500 km of the acquisition point. So far, 11 hydroelectric reservoirs are being monitored with the SIMA buoy. Basic statistics (mean and standard deviation) and an example of the temporal series of some parameters were displayed at a database with web access. Current pace of ocean resources exploitation have set the alarm for tighter environmental monitoring. Recent European legislation requires very accurate measurements of reference values for all types of ocean pollution, including acoustic noise. For near shore or offshore construction, platforms or infrastructures extensive measurements should be carried out before during and after exploitation activities have taken place. Environmental monitoring requires the deployment of sensors with specific requirements in terms of location, spatial coverage and data access rates. In some cases, monitoring includes accessing real time information regarding detecting intruders, their localization and, eventually, their interception. A key component of any environmental monitoring network is a high performance wireless communication network capable or interconnecting both fixed and moving sensing platforms for retrieving data and transmitting commands. The Underwater Acoustic Network initiative has recently demonstrated with an at sea experiment (Trondheim, May 2011) a full functioning 3 fixed node and 2 mobile node network for collecting data and performing surveillance tasks. 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.-- PMID: 17217992 [PubMed].-- Printed version published Apr 2007.; Barbel (Barbus graellsii) is a freshwater fish used as a sentinel species in environmental monitoring programmes and ecotoxicological studies in northern Spain, particularly in the Ebro River basin, the largest freshwater resource in Spain. We developed specific primers for the quantification of CYP1A and metallothionein (MT)-1 and -2 gene expression by QRT-PCR in barbel in order to assess their suitability in biological effect monitoring of dioxin-like compounds and metals. All three genes responded as expected in laboratory tests, using model inducers. Hepatic CYP1A mRNA levels showed a twofold induction in fish injected intraperitoneally with b-naphthoflavone, whereas MT-1 and MT-2 gene expression was strongly induced by cadmium (15- and 13-fold, respectively) and mercury (five- and eightfold). Barbel populations from different sites on the Ebro River basin showed a good correlation between the historical records of organochlorine pollution, CYP1A expression levels and EROD activity. Nevertheless, although metallothionein protein levels in the liver of wild fish correlated with hepatic levels of mercury, MT-1 and MT-2 gene expression did not correlate with the mercury content or with the concentration of metals in sediments from the sites inhabited by the fish. Biosensors are useful analytical tools for environmental monitoring, capable of providing results in real time, simple to use, portable and cost-effective. Some examples of biosensors in advanced stage of development, which have been applied to real samples, as well as of commercial devices, are given. Biosensors designed for measurement of either specific chemicals or their biological effects, such as toxicity biosensors and endocrine effect biosensors, are discussed. This overview also addresses the support provided by public institutions for biosensor research in the USA, Japan and, especially, in Europe. This document presents fifteen technical guidelines to evaluate the suitability of an ecological indicator for a particular monitoring program. The guidelines are organized within four evaluation phases: conceptual relevance, feasibility of implementation, response variability, and interpretation and utility. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development has adopted these guidelines as an iterative process for internal and (EPA's) affiliated researchers during the course of indicator development, and as a consistent framework for indicator review. Chapter One describes the guidelines; Chapters Two, Three, and Four illustrate application of the guidelines to three indicators in various stages of development. The example indicators include a direct chemical measure, dissolved oxygen concentration, and two multi-metric biological indices, an index of estuarine benthic condition and one based on stream fish assemblages. The purpose of these illustrations is to demonstrate the evaluation process using real data and working with the limitations of research in progress. Furthermore, these chapters demonstrate that an evaluation may emphasize individual guidelines differently, depending on the type of indicator and the program design.
