A partir destes resultados...

This work aims to investigate the local society role in the efforts that had been performed towards the environmental recovery of the Lake Guaíba...

In order for the projects of recovery of degraded areas to be successful, it is necessary to have a perfect recovery of the soil where the revegetation will be implanted as an initial action in the recovery of the whole process. The use of native forest species fully adapted to these types of terrain is another aspect of great importance, once the non-selection of these species, even if abundant in the surrounding areas, as it is in our case, implies great mortality of individuals during the planting and their low fixation during the process. The establishment of a monitoring program that contemplates the advancements obtained in the soil, the vegetation and the return of wild animals also collaborate in the evaluation of the success of the process. And, finally, the effective participation of the mining company, accepting and applying the techniques tested and indicated by research, even if, initially, the return time is longer than expected, also guarantees the success of the process. The mining company not only implemented a partnership with important universities in Brazil to obtain solutions for the environmental problems but also applied the developed techniques and the monitoring program. In the present work, we have attempted to summarize important aspects to evaluate the advancements in the rehabilitation plan for those areas...

This work analyzed and compared three methods of environmental recovery in bauxite mining commonly used in Poços de Caldas Plateau, MG, by means of recovery costs and ecological benefits. Earnings and costs data of environmental recovery activities were obtained for the areas that belonged to the Companhia Geral de Minas - CGM, on properties sited in the city of Poços de Caldas, MG. The amount of costs of these activities was used to compare the recovery methods by updating them monetarily to a reference date, in other words, the present moment. It is concluded that the difference between the present value of costs for simple restoration and rehabilitation activities are less than 1% and that between the complete restoration and rehabilitation is about 15.12%, suggesting that the choice of the methods to be used must be based on the ecological earnings proportional to each of them. The methodology of environmental restoration of the mining areas emphasizes the ecological variables in the process of establishment of the community, to the detriment of complex ecological aspects, which show difficulties in measuring the actual moment of the development of the ecosystem considered.

Mining contributes to the life quality of contemporary society, but can generate significant impacts, these being mitigated due to environmental controls adopted. This study aimed to characterize soil physical properties in high-altitude areas affected by bauxite mining, and to edaphic factors responses to restoration techniques used to recover mined areas in Poços de Caldas plateau, MG, Brazil. The experiment used 3 randomized block design involving within 2 treatments (before mining intervention and after environmental recovery), and 4 replicates (N=24). In each treatment, soil samples with deformed structures were determined: granulometry, water-dispersible clay content, flocculation index, particle density, stoniness level, water aggregate stability, and organic matter contend. Soil samples with preserved structures were used to determine soil density and the total volume of pores, macropores, and micropores. Homogenization of stoniness between soil layers as a result of soil mobilization was observed after the mined area recovery. Stoniness decreased in 0.10-0.20 m layer after recovery, but was similar in the 0-0.10 m layer in before and after samples. The recovery techniques restored organic matter levels to pre-mining levels. However...

Irregular operations in the Express Shipment Service Delivery industry require real time solutions that can be implemented to determine routings for aircraft and time-sensitive commodities. During inclement weather, crew unavailability, and mechanical failures, operations personnel use various approaches to recover from disruptions, including rescheduling or canceling flight legs, diverting aircraft and commodities, or missing service all together. We present an optimization approach that can capture and evaluate the effects of different operating policies. Specifically, we compare and contrast three different strategies, namely: 1) minimizing schedule delay, 2) minimizing the number of service failures, and 3) minimizing the combined cost of operations and service failures. We provide proof of concept by implementing our optimization models and evaluating them using several representative scenarios and conducting computational experiments. The solutions, which are highly dependent on user-defined parameters, represent tradeoffs between costs of operations and service failures.; by Jennifer C. Acidification of aquatic ecosystems has resulted in severe habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity, regionally and globally. Near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada lakes in Killarney Park were highly acidified by the large-scale Sudbury metal smelter emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, in the 1960s. Fortunately due to the steady decline in emissions, pH increases in these acid-damaged lakes has been observed. This study was undertaken to determine the extent of chemical and biological recovery of lakes in Killarney Park from 1972 to 2011. We assessed the relative importance of environmental variables in shaping the structure of zooplankton communities. Forty-three lakes were sampled to characterize environmental conditions and zooplankton community structure. We compared historic data from a 1972 survey to the data collected in the 2011 survey from the identical lakes; analyses were conducted to compare pH, zooplankton abundance, diversity, richness, and community composition. Chemical recovery was observed with a significant increase in pH from 1972 to 2011. However, our analyses revealed that minimal biological recovery was observed from 1972 to 2011; there was no significant increase in Shannon-Weiner diversity, total abundance or the presence of acid-sensitive zooplankton species...

peer-reviewed; Non-culture based analysis of microbial populations via phylogenetic analysis is becoming an increasingly important tool in the determination of microbial communities and community flux in a large number of environmental niches. The results obtained are however only as good as the preparative techniques used to isolate the original templates and the PCR processing techniques used to amplify these templates. In thermal niches such as autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion systems (ATAD) there are many features that limit the optimal recovery of microbial diversity. Such features include lysis and release of products from the microbial population such as nucleases and proteases which effect both template recovery and polymerase functionality, inhibitory substances from the environmental source and even the nature of the primers used to amplify the resultant templates. In optimisation of the extraction and amplification of environmental DNA from an ATAD system we have identified a number of issues that affect the recovery of diversity which may have widespread applicability to the recovery of diversity by molecular techniques from other environmental niches. Methods of optimisation and analysis of diversity recovery will be discussed.; HEA

One of the main components necessary for providing safe drinking water for users who lack piped water in the home is the ability to safely store it in the home. Users in the Nyanza Province of Kenya frequently carry water from some distance or purchase vended water and traditionally store this water in their homes in clay pots. CARE/Kenya, a non-governmental organization working in conjunction with local women potters and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, modified these clay pots so that they fit the definition of designated safe storage water containers, which contain the following three characteristics: a narrow mouth, a lid, and a tap to prevent recontamination. Three pottery production sites were visited in order to document, analyze, and suggest improvements for the design of the modified clay pots, specifically with regards to the standardization of the size and shape of the pots, so as to allow simple and convenient standardized household chlorine dosing, and the tap design and attachment, because the current tap design is expensive and prone to leaking.; (cont.) The modified clay pots displayed little variability in pot dimensions, and the 20 liter modified clay pots from the Amilo location showed a less than or equal to 10% volume variability that is acceptable according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention household chlorine dosing procedure. A reference rope tool developed to help standardize the size of modified clay pots can be used to train new potters but is not necessary for experienced potters. The spring-operated plastic tap was found to be the most promising design to replace the current metal tap design. The material cost of the modified clay pots at the three sites was determined with some certainty to range from 202-370 KSH (US$2.70-US$4.90). However...

Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3), a lethal DNA virus that spreads in natural lakes and rivers, infects common carp and koi. We established a quantification method for CyHV-3 that includes a viral concentration method and quantitative PCR combined with an external standard virus. Viral concentration methods were compared using the cation-coated filter and ultrafiltration methods. The recovery of virus-like particles was similar for the two methods (cation-coated filter method, 44% ± 19%, n = 3; ultrafiltration method, 50% ± 3%, n = 3); however, the former method was faster and more suitable for routine determinations. The recovery of seeded CyHV-3 based on the cation-coated filter method varied by more than 3 orders of magnitude among the water samples. The recovery yield of CyHV-3 was significantly correlated with that of the seeded λ phage, and the average ratio of λ to the CyHV-3 recovery yield was 1.4, indicating that λ is useful as an external standard virus for determining the recovery yield of CyHV-3. Therefore, to quantify CyHV-3 in environmental water, a known amount of λ was added as an external standard virus to each water sample. Using this method, CyHV-3 DNA was detected in 6 of the 10 (60%) types of environmental water tested; the highest concentration of CyHV-3 DNA was 2 × 105 copies liter−1. The lowest recovery limit of CyHV-3 DNA was 60 copies liter−1. This method is practical for monitoring CyHV-3 abundance in environmental water.

http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7925.2014v27n3p197Dung beetles that are sensitive to environmental alterations may be used as indicator species to mark the recovery of degraded areas. This work aimed at registering and comparing the communities of Scarabaeinae located in areas with different periods of environmental recovery after being used for coal mining. This study was developed in Lauro Müller, Santa Catarina, and consisted of two areas in the process of recovery, one for one year and one for five years. Fifteen pitfall traps baited with human feces were placed in each area in order to attract the dung beetles. The counting, identification and measurement of body size and biomass of the specimens captured were carried out in the laboratory. Sampling sufficiency was verified and variables from both areas were compared using a t test. The recorded species were Canthon aff. chalybaeus, Canthon angularis, Canthon rutilans cyanescens, Deltochilum multicolor, Dichotomius sericeus, Eurysternus parallelus and Ontherus sulcator. A total of 35 individuals were captured, three in the one-year recovery area and 32 in the area under recovery for five years, C. rutilans cyanescens being the most abundant species (40.6%). All species collected were found in the five-years recovery area...
