Educational Technology has developed in Portugal since mid 70s. Many research studies in the field have been deve loped since then and most of these were reviewed in a meta-analysis conducted by one of the authors that covered the period between 1985 and 2000. A great deal of work, nevertheless, still needs to be done, if we want educational technology in Portugal to flourish, becoming a recognised and established area of research. This has been the main goal of the project we present in this paper: 466 documents (papers and dissertations) published between 2000 and 2005 were analysed in order to identify the main areas of interest and research of educational technologists in Portugal. More than a simple portrait of what has been and ET in our country, we believe that the analysed data point out interesting cues that should inform governmental decisions and define priorities for research in this educational domain.

Initiated in 1999, iCampus is a research collaboration between Microsoft Research and MIT whose goal is to create and demonstrate technologies with the potential for revolutionary change throughout the university curriculum.” The program was made possible by a $25 million research grant from Microsoft to MIT, and involves extensive collaboration between MIT and Microsoft staff.

This assessment study by the TLT Group addresses the question: The TLT Group has been asked, “In light of the experience of iCampus, especially those projects selected by MIT and Microsoft for close study, what can be learned about priorities for educational technology initiatives in the future and about how the spread of such innovations can be more effectively supported?”

The major conclusions are that the five projects studied improved important elements of an MIT education by making learning more authentic, active, collaborative, and feedback-rich. Nevertheless, wider adoption beyond MIT was extremely difficult to achieve, largely due to structure issues in universities that make it difficult for educational technology to spread beyond the initial innovators, even to other departments within the same institution. The report includes recommendations for universities...

Instruction in higher education must adapt more rapidly to: changes in workforce needs, global issues, advances in disciplines, and resource constraints. The pace of such improvement depends on the speed with which new ideas and materials are adopted across institutions. In 1999 Microsoft pledged $25 million and staff support for iCampus, a seven-year MIT project to develop pioneering uses of educational technology. The TLT Group studied five iCampus projects in order to identify factors affecting institutionalization and widespread dissemination. Among the factors impeding adoption: lack of rewards and support for faculty to adopt innovations; faculty isolation; and a lack of attention to adoption issues among projects selected for funding. The study made recommendations for universities, foundations, government agencies and corporations: 1) continue making education more authentic, active, collaborative, and feedback-rich; 2) create demand to adopt ideas and materials from other sources by encouraging all faculty members to improve and document learning in their programs, year after year; 3) nurture coalitions for instructional improvement, across and within institutions; 4) create more effective higher education – corporate alliances; and 5) improve institutional services to support faculty in educational design...

The identification of alternative venues of learning that provide people with life and professional skills is valuable in societies where educational resources are constrained. To better understand paths of learning not found in the traditional educational system, and the incidental benefits that accrue from those types of learning, this thesis examines the lives and careers of five-star hotel employees. The high-class hotel industry was chosen as an appropriate place in which to locate personal and professional benefits due to the sophisticated training programs offered in the industry and the multi-faceted nature of hotel work, which could potentially provide employees opportunities to gain a diversity of skills. By presenting one case in the hotel industry of a learning process that may be taking place more widely in other industries, the thesis seeks to provide evidence that could help governments more effectively reallocate educational resources. Based on criteria that included hotel type, hotel location, existence of training programs, and cooperation level of hotel employees, two hotels in Seoul, South Korea were selected for the study. Interviews were conducted in both hotels with employees from various departments and levels.; (cont.) Surveys were also distributed to a larger set of employees in both hotels. The findings from the interview responses were categorized into thirteen themes...

Very little research has examined K–12 educational technology decision-making in Canada. This collective case study explores the technology procurement process in Ontario’s publicly funded school districts to determine if it is informed by the relevant research, grounded in best practices, and enhances student learning. Using a qualitative approach, 10 senior leaders (i.e., chief information officers, superintendents, etc.) were interviewed. A combination of open-ended and closed-ended questions were used to reveal the most important factors driving technology acquisition, research support, governance procedures, data use, and assessment and return on investment (ROI) measures utilized by school districts in their implementation of educational technology. After participants were interviewed, the data were transcribed, member checked, and then submitted to “Computer-assisted NCT analysis” (Friese, 2014) using ATLAS.ti. The findings show that senior leaders are making acquisitions that are not aligned with current scholarship and not with student learning as the focus. It was also determined that districts struggle to use data-driven decision-making to support the governance of educational technology spending. Finally, the results showed that districts do not have effective assessment measures in place to determine the efficacy or ROI of a purchased technology. Although data are limited to the responses of 10 senior leaders...

Implementation of educational technology into Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) classrooms requires more than just the acquisition of hardware; it requires embedded professional development and training for the FDK educational team in order to foster sustainable change. Research that underpins this project comes from literature related to: Effective educational technology integration in the early years; Designing effective professional learning for teachers; Shifts in the culture within a school; and shifts in teachers’ mindsets. The literature is clear that in order for a sustainable shift in classroom culture, pedagogy and practice to occur there must be ongoing support for these changes. Face-to-face support, either due to lack of expertise, budget allocations, time restraints, or geographical location can be difficult to administer in a timely manner. Therefore, this project focuses on the creation of a professional development resource that will supplement face-to-face professional learning and thereby bridge moments when direct support is not possible. The artifact for this project is the independent creation of an Apple iTunesU course to support the developmentally appropriate and meaningful integration of iPad technology into an FDK educational team’s daily kindergarten classroom practice. By designing a self-paced...

Introduction: The serious games help the process of teaching and learning not only related to clinical skills of students, but also in developing notions of communication and research. Objective: (1) To verify the cognitive performance of nursing students in the clinical assessment of premature influenced by the association between formal classes and a virtual learning environment (VLE), and a serious game; (2) To evaluate the satisfaction of the students regarding the use of serious games e-Baby. Methodology: It is a quasi-experiment study with Portuguese nursing students enrolled in the last year of the course (n = 14). The educational intervention consisted of a semi-presencial course (60 hours) with allocation of digital tools Physical Examination of the Preterm baby and e-Baby available in a VLE (Moodle®) and moments of average fidelity simulation. The group's performance was analysed using the Wilcoxon test (performance score = post-test - pre-test) considering ? = 0.05. The simulation variable was analysed separately, and a part of the students took the test before the class with simulation and other students took the test after, and there was no statistically significant difference. It is for descriptive statistics on the theme that learning increasingly improved every step that was evaluated. The Wilcoxon statistical test showed significant difference when comparing the learning obtained from baseline considering all students / n = 14 (p = 0.001). With respect to performance comparison between the experimental and control groups...

Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2015; Immersive educational games have continued to grow in popularity; however, there is a growing need in the field of game research to gain a clearer picture of the process by which teachers integrate these games to promote student achievement. The focus of this exploratory case-based research was to gain a clearer picture of the relationship between a teacher's desire to use an immersive game for a particular use and the process of realizing that purpose in his or her classroom through an implementation. Due to a lack of immersive game integration research, this study drew upon the large corpus of research on educational technology to conceptualize an immersive educational MUVE game as a type of instructional tool. The manner in which a game is used is largely influenced by a teacher's pedagogical preferences and classroom factors; therefore, this research has built a series of cases that observed and analyzed how four 7th and 8th grade teachers, working within a publicly-funded charter school, implemented the educational immersive game called Quest Atlantis. Video and interview data were collected each day teachers implemented QA in their classrooms. Video data was transcribed and coded using a grounded constant comparison method. The results of the analysis generated a number of themes that affirmed that teachers had a strong influence on how the game was used...

This thesis presents lessons from the development of an on-line, web-based feedback system and preliminary analysis of the socio-technical interactions associated with the specification, design and use of this system. The system has been designed to facilitate many forms of feedback in educational environments. Novel technical components of the system include: (1) a highly detailed and flexible data model representing the social-system feedback loops, (2) reusable feedback objects and sub-objects which minimize content entry requirements while improving data aggregation capabilities, and (3) feedback objects which respond dynamically based on the context in which they are used. Novel social system learning associated with this thesis centers on the mechanisms to facilitate feedback in academic and industry learning environments. This thesis features the design, implementation, and preliminary use of the Online Feedback Organization, Requesting and Monitoring for Educators (OnFORME) system. OnFORME was created to enable ubiquitous feedback collection in a semi-transparent manner for educators in both academic and corporate training environments. OnFORME provides a way for educators to quickly author feedback objects (e.g. surveys) and publish them via the World Wide Web so that students can easily respond. The author used agile development methodology to design and implement this application directly from customer use cases in a bottom-up approach. Inductive research methods included observations of thirteen potential adoption trials...

Studies of computers and education have failed to account for the relevance and importance of tacit assumptions and unquestioned expectations that underlie educational technology practices. A major premise of this dissertation is that it is these taken-for-granted interpretations of technology that most significantly influence how technology is used in the sphere of education. It is thus analytically useful to examine technology use in education by investigating the assumptions on which currently pervasive educational technology practices are built. I employ the concept of "mental models" to study current educational technology practices. An examination of the literature revealed key elements of the prevailing mental model of technology in education, which I call the mental model of computers as information technology and multimedia machines. In this mental model, computer technology is viewed as a means to provide students and teachers with Internet connectivity and access to extensive, up-to-date information. The computer's multimedia authoring capacity can then be utilized to synthesize the wealth of information culled from Internet sources into presentations with integrated text, graphics, sound, and video. I investigated how this mental model organizes thinking about technology use and education within a large-scale initiative to implement one-to-one computing in public schools...

Hofstetter, Fred T.; Most health professional students spend a significant amount of their education in a clinical setting. These settings help students develop patient-centered care that is rooted in evidence and dynamic in design and socialize them to be able to engage in collaborative practice. Typically, students involved in inter-professional education (IPE) activities develop team building skills that focus on the function of a team and the role identities of its members, yet little opportunity exists for students to develop collaborative skills in clinical practice. Among the many factors that contribute to the lack of exposure to team-functioning in a clinical setting, the most important is logistics. This action research study looked at identifying ways technology could be used to enhance IPE in a clinical setting, allowing more students to collaborate and develop the needed competencies for practice in healthcare today. Clearly, when students from multiple two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other, effective collaboration and communication is enabled and health outcomes are improved (WHO, 2010). This study was designed in four phases which shaped the identifiable tools Google Docs and Google + Hangouts for collaboration during clinical rounding on a patient care unit. A triangulation of data collected was used to identify students' attitudes and beliefs towards technology and clinically focused inter-professional education. Data analysis showed that for many of the students this was their first experience on a clinical team and...
