In Portugal, the last decade has been characterised by important reforms in the educational system particularly of secondary education. The Portuguese Language Area, comprising different subjects, was submitted to deep changes concerning its aims, content, methodologies, and assessment. In this paper, it is my purpose to analyse some of those changes, focusing on their underlying principles, their main features and their impact both in the pedagogic field and in the public sphere. I consider firstly the political and educational circumstances in which the reconfiguration of the Portuguese Language Area in secondary education took place. Then, I proceed to describe the main features of the official pedagogic discourse that gives expression to such reconfiguration through an examination of the Portuguese Language Syllabus. After that, school textbooks are focused on, in order to understand how they interpret the official discourse and how they conceive pedagogic practice. Subsequently, as a means to capture continuities and discrepancies between pedagogic and public spheres, the analysis deals with a corpus of texts from the media that give voice to positions concerning the teaching of Portuguese. In the last section, according to the analysis previously developed...

This dissertation is inserted in an ongoing investigation called State and Educational Policies in the Post-graduation Program in Education from the College of Education of the Federal University of Goiás. This research analyses the relationships and tensions among education, media and politics, having as study case education in Goiás from the perspective of a newspaper called O Popular, during Fernando Henrique Cardoso FHC (1995-2002) administration. It is examined, in a more objective way, how education in federal, state and municipal levels; public or private was portrayed by O Popular newspaper. In this analysis it is taken into account how this newspaper focused on different aspects that referred to the theme, considering the following subjects: public policies, propagation, behavior, service and complaint. Such categorizations required the analysis of 1.646 articles on the education field published in the newspaper O Popular between 1995 and 2002. non-peer-reviewed; This purpose of this research was to evaluate the use of digital media in apprenticeship training. This digital media was targeted to specific areas of the curriculum using podcasts and a pedagogically designed tutorial program. The digital media utilised has the flexibility to be used by the student anytime or anywhere using modern technology. The results of the study showed a marked improvement in test results and a positive bias among today’s apprentices in the use of technology in education. Furthermore, the research evidence also proves there are reasonably high levels of technological ability and access among apprentices in computer and iPod usage which proves there would be few barriers to implementing this type of pedagogical enhancements. The research has shown however that there was a lack of motivation among many apprentices during their training which concurs with research conducted in the literature. This lack of motivation can in part be attributed to the effects of job loss suffered by apprentices during training which was caused by a severe economic downturn, especially in the building industry. Research on affective learning was important to this research as it could have a major impact on training and therefore affect test results which could diminish the impact of digital media integration. Therefore the results and recommendations of this thesis in light of the evidence found is that it is time for FAS...

Post-war immigration into Germany did not challenge education for a long time since work migration was regarded as temporary in the fifties and sixties of the last century. When workers began to settle – mainly as a result to the stop of recruiting workforce in 1973 – education had to deal with the situation of migrant children attending German schools in large numbers. The first answer to this new challenge was the concept of migrant education (Ausländerpädagogik). Multicultural education (´intercultural education` in the German diction) was developed in Germany rather reluctantly in the eighties as a second answer to this challenge when the concept of migrant education was no longer regarded as an adequate one by many educationalists in practice and research. In this paper we will discuss more recent challenges to multicultural education. First we will deal with the fact that multicultural education is now sometimes regarded as a concept of international education dealing with the cultures of the world. Although this is a necessary approach in our world of global relationships, it tends to neglect local diversity. Future challenges to multicultural education concern the combination of local and global aspects within this concept. There is a further problem to be considered with regard to a multicultural education that deals mainly with global relationships: The needs of children from migrant families. The recent PISA study (OECD 2001) has clearly pointed out that the German school system has failed so far to give them access to a good school career that is...

In spite of the fact that we all live in the so called Network society, traditional systems do not usually train their audiences to make a neither media critical consumption nor choose a qualified journalism. That is why traditional spaces for formal education should be completed bye other actors which contribute to media literacy teaching. One of them is the media observatory, a recent but growing reality in Latin America. The objective of this article is describing the peculiarity of this mechanism and specifying the instruments that allow this formative task. First...

In this study, methods of media literacy instruction including analytic activities, production activities, and a combination of analytic and production activities were compared to determine their influence on grade 8 students' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours towards commercials. The findings showed that media literacy instruction does improve media literacy skills. Specifically, activities that included an analytic component or an analytic and production component were significantly better than activities that included a production component. Participants that completed analytic or analytic and production activities were able to discern media-related terms, target audience, selling techniques, social values, and stereotypes in commercials better than participants that completed only production activities. The research findings also showed obstacles when teaching media literacy. When engaged in analytic activities, the difficulties included locating suitable resources, addressing the competition from commercials, encouraging written reflection, recognizing social values, and discussing racial stereotypes. When engaged in production activities, the difficulties were positioning recording stations, managing group work...

This research is intended to understand the effects of the Articulation Policy between upper secondary and higher education in Bogota. The study approached several perspectives about the process of decision makers in the City Education Office, and those of the Articulation Coordinators in the higher education institutions and in the schools. In addition to that, the project developed three case studies in order to understand the implementation process and its effects on students. Based on the findings, we determined that this policy was irrational and confused the problem of lack of identity of the upper secondary education with the scarce access to higher education. Likewise, the Articulation has promoted different cooperative and conflictive interactions at schools, and a training of the students for the social experience in higher education.

42 p.; Libro Electrónico; The internationally recognized "NMC Horizon Report" series and regional "NMC Technology Outlooks" are part of the NMC Horizon Project, a comprehensive research venture established in 2002 that identifies and describes emerging technologies likely to have a large impact over the coming five years in education around the globe. This volume, the "NMC Horizon Report: 2012 Higher Education Edition," was again produced in a collaborative effort with the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, an EDUCAUSE Program, and examines emerging technologies for their potential impact on teaching, learning, and creative inquiry within the higher education environment. The six technologies featured in the "NMC Horizon Report: 2012 Higher Education Edition" are placed along three adoption horizons that indicate likely timeframes for their entrance into mainstream use for teaching, learning, and creative inquiry. The near-term horizon assumes the likelihood of entry into the mainstream for higher education institutions within the next twelve months; the mid-term horizon, within two to three years; and the far-term, within four to five years. On the near-term horizon--that is, within the next 12 months--are "mobile apps" and "tablets". The second adoption horizon...

Introduction: Rehoboth, the name of my hometown in southern Massachusetts, comes from the Hebrew work for "crossroads." Indeed there's not much in this rural town besides Route 44 and Route 118, with smatterings of horse farms and single-family homes. These two blue highways intersect at the town's only stoplight. A sign stands at this intersection at the center of town, in front of the Cumberland Farms convenience store, across the street from the new Dunkin Donuts. It reads: Rehoboth, MA: Birthplace of Public Education in North America. I'm a product of these schools, but in this thesis I explore the road not often traveled in education: unschooling, a type of homeschooling with unstructured, child-directed learning. Through an examination of the attitudes, beliefs and practices related to media and technology in the unschooling subculture, I come to a definition of participatory media.; by Vanessa Bertozzi.; Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Comparative Media Studies, 2006.; Includes bibliographical references (leaves 199-206).

American public education commands a workforce of millions of people, a budget in the trillions of dollars, and a significant share of one’s childhood. It is a vast, complex system run simultaneously by local, state, and federal government, each of which has different goals from the others. The media have an amazing number of topics to explore but limited time and space to do so. This giant educational system—one that affects anyone with a child, a teaching degree, a taxable home, a niece, a competing interest, an innovative idea—is not easily pushed in one direction. To the extent that the acquisition of knowledge changes an individual’s mind, and that change affects a group of citizens, and that group affects the status quo, the news media occupy an important slice of the educational system in America. Which educational issues the news media choose to cover, and with which “slant,” “angle,” or “frame,” can have an important influence on political decision-makers and the general public. This undergraduate thesis seeks to show how local coverage of public school diversity policies in Wake County, North Carolina, was framed during three times of great policy change. The (Raleigh, N.C.) News & Observer, a regional newspaper that primarily covers the city of Raleigh...
