In this study, we examine the pre-exiting productivity profile of mature firms relatively to survivors. We also evaluate how productivity affects the probability of exit along various dimensions. Our approach is an empirical one, and it is based on an unbalanced panel of Portuguese manufacturing firms covering a period of one decade. Our findings confirm that market selection forces low-productivity firms to exit, but there is also evidence that a sizeable portion of low-productivity firms do not shut down. Conversely, there is a non-negligible fraction of high-productivity firms that do actually close. In line, too, with some key theoretical predictions, exiting firms reveal a falling productivity level over a number of years prior to exit. Finally, our results from the survival model show that both low-productivity and small firms are much more likely to exit the market. Industry and macro environment were also found to have a non-negligible role on the exit of mature firms.

This paper proposes a neo-Schumpeterian model in order to discuss how the mechanisms of entry and exit contribute to industry productivity growth in alternative technological regimes. By assuming a) that firms learn about the technology through a variety of sources, and b) a continuous flow of entry and exit, our numerical simulation exercise does show that exits and contraction take mostly place among less productive firms, while entry and expansion are concentrated among the more efficient ones. We were also able to replicate the fact that the entry-exit effect is larger in the entrepreneurial regime, while the contribution of continuing firms is larger in the routinized regime. Our model was thus very effective in replicating some major empirical regularities of industry dynamics, including the very prominent role of entry and exit in productivity growth. Our analysis also suggests that micro analysis is the proper complement to aggregate industry studies, as it provides a considerable insight into the causes of productivity growth.

This article analyses the exit decision in the European venture capital market, studying when to exit and how it interacts with the exit form. Using a competing risks model we study the impact on the exit decision of the characteristics of venture capital investors, of their investments and of contracting variables. Our results reveals that the hazard functions are non-monotonic for all exit forms and suggest that, in Europe, Initial Public Offering candidates take longer to be selected than trade sales. Moreover our results show that, in Europe, venture capitalists associated with financial institutions have quicker exits (stronger for trade sales), and highlight the importance of contracting variables on the exit decision. An unexpected result is that the presence on the board of directors leads to longer investment durations.

The Florida Department of Transportation used a series of changeable-message signs that functioned as freeway guide signs to divert traffic to Universal Theme Park via one of two eastbound exits based on traffic congestion at the first of the two exits. An examination of crashes along the entire route indicated a statistically significant increase in crashes at the first eastbound exit following the actuation of the system. Furthermore, all of the crashes occurred in close proximity to the exit gore (the crosshatched area at exits that drivers are not supposed to enter or traverse) at the first exit. In Experiment 1, behavioral data were collected using an alternating treatments design. These data revealed that reassigning the exit signs was effective in producing a change in the percentage of drivers using each of the two exits. These data also showed that the reassignment of the theme park exit was associated with an increase in the percentage of motor vehicle conflicts that consisted of vehicles cutting across the exit gore. An analysis revealed that the method used for switching the designated or active theme park exit on the series of changeable-message signs led to the presentation of conflicting messages to some motorists, thus resulting in erratic driving behavior (cutting across the exit gore). In Experiment 2...

This paper uses a panel of small and medium manufacturing firms in Australia and studies the relationship between productivity and outsourcing accounting for the possibility of inefficient firms selfselecting into exit instead of outsourcing to domestic suppliers. Estimating a propensity model on an unbalanced panel of firms and correcting for the selection bias when firms opt for exit shows that the impact of productivity on the outsourcing decision could be much larger than estimated so far. The paper further explores the impact of outsourcing on a firm’s future performance and finds that the effect is nonuniform and productivity dependent, and outsourcing mostly brings improvements to firms that initially had low productivities. The most productive firms seem to outsource for other reasons such as focusing on innovation and exports with an eye on longer-term returns.

The paper reports an investigation of the influence of geometric profile of a long slot nozzle on the statistical properties of a plane jet discharging into a large space. The nozzle-exit profile was varied by changing orifice-plates with different exit radii (r) over the range of 0 < r/h < 3.60, where h is the slot-height. The present measurements were made at a slot-height based Reynolds number (Reh) of 1.80 × 104 and a slot aspect ratio (span/height) of 72. The results obtained show that both the initial flow and the downstream flow are dependent upon the ratio r/h. A “top-hat” mean exit velocity profile is closely approximated when r/h approaches 3.60. The decay and spread rates of the jet’s mean velocity decrease asymptotically as r/h is increased, with the differences becoming small as r/h approaches 3.60. A decrease in r/h results in a higher formation rate of the primary vortices in the near-field. The far-field values of the centerline turbulence intensity are higher for smaller r/h, and display asymptotic-like convergence as r/h approaches 3.60. Overall, the effect of r/h on the mean and turbulence fields decreases as r/h increases.; http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/505737/description#description; Ravinesh C. How widespread and deeply-imbedded are far-right ideologies and organizations in Europe? How have right-wing extremist and populist parties and movements fared? What are their historical roots, and what is the basis of their continuing attraction? Our volume of collected articles is intended to contribute to the ongoing review of this problem and to suggest the shape that an effective posture against the European radical right might take. It offers a follow-up to a 2011 book issued by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, entitled “Is Europe on the ‘Right’ Path? Right-wing extremism and right-wing populism in Europe.” The new anthology, like its predecessor, is being published simultaneously in German and English. It is the concluding publication of the German XENOS special program known as “Exit to Enter.” Between 2009 and 2013, the European Social Fund (ESF) and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS) provided grants to fund projects designed to help people not only to exit the far-right milieu, but also to enter the labor-market with some prospects for success. The insights gathered over the course of the Exit to Enter program will be discussed in this book. While the volume includes studies of numerous countries...

Several studies examine the patterns and determinants of entry and exit in manufacturing industries. Not much work exists on entry and exit in international markets. This paper uses Chilean data to analyze the determinants of entry and exit in and out of export markets. We find that entry and exit rates differ across industries; vary over time; and are positively correlated. The econometric analysis shows that within-industry heterogeneity, measured by differences in productivity or other firm characteristics, has a significant effect on plant turnover in international markets. Our findings reveal that trade costs, factor intensities, and fluctuations in the real exchange rate play a minor role explaining entry and exit. This last result is consistent with hysteresis in international markets.

This paper analyses the role played by both competitive pressure (increasing imports) and the restructuring of industries through entry and exit in productivity growth of Spanish manufacturing during the eighties, the key period of its accession to the EEC economy. A GMM panel estimation of the determinants of corrected Solow residual for 75 manufacturing during 1979–1990, shows that these forces accounted for 80% of productivity growth, playing an important role the displacement of inefficient firms by competitive entry.; ©The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com

This paper uses a unique data set of panel firms from the World Bank's Enterprise Surveys in 47 economies, to provide estimates of the patterns of firm exit, and analyzes various firm characteristics and conditions under which firms leave the market. Firms' labor productivity and age are robustly associated with a lower likelihood of exit, consistent with conceptions of creative destruction and findings elsewhere in the literature. These findings are robust across several specifications. However, the effects are mitigated by other factors, such as use of bank financing and the presence of limited liability. Although firm size does appear to matter, its effect is lessened after accounting for labor productivity. The paper also provides basic estimates of job loss attributable to firm exit, estimating that on average 3 to 4 percent of private sector employment is lost per annum due to firm exit. Because of the challenges of data collection, the analysis relies on a necessarily conservative definition of exit and provides a framework for future work on utilizing such periodic survey panels to estimate the relative patterns of firm attrition and the associated job loss.

[EN]: At the latest stages of their cell cycle, cells carry out crucial processes for the correct segregation of their genetic and cytoplasmic material. In this work, we provide evidence demonstrating that the cell cycle arrest of some MEN (mitosis exit network) mutants in the anaphase-telophase transition is bypassed. In addition, the ability of cdc15 diploid mutant strains to develop non-septated chains of cells, supported by nuclear division, is shown. This phenotype is also displayed by haploid cdc15 mutant strains when cell lysis is prevented by osmotic protection, and shared by other MEN mutants. By contrast, anaphase-telophase arrest is strictly observed in double MEN-FEAR (fourteen early anaphase release) mutants. In this context, the overexpression of a FEAR component, SPO12, in a MEN mutant background enhances the ability of MEN mutants to bypass cell cycle arrest. Taken together, these data suggest a critical role of Cdc15 and other MEN proteins in cytokinesis, allowing a new model for their cellular function to be proposed.; [ES]: En las últimas etapas de su ciclo celular, las células llevan a cabo procesos cruciales para la segregación correcta del material genético y citoplásmico.
