This thesis develops and evaluates a business model for connected full electric vehicles (FEV) for the European market. Despite a promoting political environment, various barriers have thus far prevented the FEV from becoming a mass-market vehicle. Besides cost, the most noteworthy of these barriers is represented by range anxiety, a product of FEVs’ limited range, lacking availability of charging infrastructure, and long recharging times. Connected FEVs, which maintain a constant connection to the surrounding infrastructure, appear to be a promising element to overcome drivers’ range anxiety. Yet their successful application requires a well functioning FEV ecosystem which can only be created through the collaboration of various stakeholders such as original equipment manufacturers (OEM), first tier suppliers (FTS), charging infrastructure and service providers (CISP), utilities, communication enablers, and governments. This thesis explores and evaluates how a business model, jointly created by these stakeholders, could look like, i.e. how stakeholders could collaborate in the design of products, services, infrastructure, and advanced mobility management, to meet drivers with a sensible value proposition that is at least equivalent to that of internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. The system reliability depends on the reliability of its components itself. Therefore, it is necessary a methodology capable of inferring the state of functionality of these components to establish reliable indices of quality. Allocation models for maintenance and protective devices, among others, have been used in order to improve the quality and availability of services on electric power distribution systems. This paper proposes a methodology for assessing the reliability of distribution system components in an integrated way, using probabilistic models and fuzzy inference systems to infer about the operation probability of each component. © 2012 IEEE.

Working with a mix of panel data on goods and services trade for the OECD for 1994–2004, combined with social accounts data (i.e. data on intermediate linkages) for 78 countries benchmarked to the panel midpoint, we examine the role of services as inputs in manufacturing, with a particular focus on indirect exports of services through merchandise exports, and also on the related interaction between service sector openness and the overall pattern of manufacturing exports. From the cross-section, we also develop a set of stylized facts linking services to the level of development and the density of intermediate linkages. We find significant and strong positive effects from increased business service openness (i.e. greater levels of imports) on industries like machinery, motor vehicles, chemicals and electric equipment, supporting the notion that off-shoring of business services may promote the competitiveness of the most skill and technology intensive industries in the OECD. No final do século XX, observa-se uma tendência mundial de desestatização dos serviços públicos prestados diretamente pelo Estado, que se mostrava ineficiente em atender adequadamente às necessidades básicas dos cidadãos. Seguindo essa tendência, o setor elétrico brasileiro que acumulava dívidas bilionárias passou por uma completa reformulação a partir dos anos 90, consistente em um amplo processo de desestatização, com a desverticalização das atividades de geração, distribuição, transmissão e comercialização e a criação de mecanismos regulatórios de eficiência e competição. This policy study on universal access to electric power (universal service) in China is based on research conducted by the China Electricity Regulatory Commission in 2006. China's policy on universal service has three facets: First, availability, that is, power service shall be available to all users; second, non-discrimination, that is, equal treatment shall be granted to all users; and third, affordability, that is, a majority of the users can afford the service. Households across China were surveyed, with emphasis on six major metropolitan regions. A comparative study was made of the Chinese postal and telecommunications services, comparing the problems faced by them with the problems of universal access to electric power. The report also compares China's policies on universal service with those of other nations.

This report addresses the role public expenditure can play in the alleviation of poverty in the Brazilian northeast, involving both regional growth, and social services. Notwithstanding relatively high growth in the past two years, the northeast lags behind the rest of the country, with a per capita GDP just under sixty percent of the country's GDP, with no significant variations since 1965. Based on national statistical data, the study identifies private investment as a principal determinant of regional growth, and, although public investments do not appear to effect growth directly, it does indirectly in so far private investment can be stimulated. The analysis further indicates that certain type of infrastructure investments, that lower local cost of production in the region (i.e., electric power, and water supply) are associated with increased private investment. O presente trabalho procura analisar o aquecimento elétrico de água no setor residencial e seu impacto no perfil de tensão, perdas e energia total acumulada. Por meio de simulações computacionais com uma rede de teste, juntamente com dados de uso dos eletrodomésticos mais comuns no ambiente residencial (separados por região, devido às diferentes condições e padrões de consumo das mesmas), foi possível estimar a quantidade de energia utilizada referente ao chuveiro elétrico, bem como o impacto no perfil de tensão e as perdas na distribuição decorrentes do uso do mesmo. Além disso, também foram analisadas as propostas de tarifação branca da ANEEL e as propostas homologadas pelas concessionárias, e seu impacto na conta de luz do consumidor residencial, para três padrões de consumo: consumo total não modificado, consumo do chuveiro deslocado e consumo do chuveiro eliminado. Na parte de impactos na rede de distribuição, confirmou-se que a utilização do chuveiro elétrico, que é praticamente uma exclusividade brasileira, representa uma parcela significativa do consumo total de uma residência, além de ser um dos maiores responsáveis pelo pico de consumo no setor residencial, o que causa um afundamento no perfil de tensão e aumento nas perdas na distribuição...

A reestruturação e a privatização do setor elétrico a partir de 1995 redefiniram o papel do Estado neste setor, que passa a assumir a função regulatória e de controle em substituição às atividades de agente empreendedor. Com essa não interveniência o Estado tornou-se apenas responsável pela regulação, fiscalização e controle dos serviços públicos concedidos de energia elétrica, sendo que o fortalecimento do marco regulatório se deu com a criação da Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica ? ANEEL, instituída pela Lei nº 9.427, de 26 de dezembro de 1996. Paradoxalmente a isso, os serviços de infra-estrutura de energia elétrica, para que possam ser implementados, necessitam da intervenção do Estado na propriedade do particular. Assim ocorre na geração, transmissão e na distribuição de energia elétrica. Vehicles must be aggregated to meet the minimum power requirements of providing ancillary services to the grid. Likely aggregator revenues are insufficient to cover the additional battery degradation costs which would be borne by an existing electric vehicle owner. Moreover, aggregator revenues are insufficient to make electric vehicles competitive with conventional vehicles and encourage uptake by prospective consumers. Net annual costs and hourly compensation payments to electric vehicle owners were most sensitive to battery cost. The fleet provided firm fast reserve from 1900h for 0.42 hours, up to 2.7 hours in the best cases. At best, likely aggregator revenue was 20 times less than the compensation required, up to 27,500 times at worst. The electric vehicle fleet may not be large enough to meet the firm fast reserve power and duration requirements until 2020. However, it may not be until 2030 that enough vehicles have been sold to provide this service cost-effectively. Even then, many more electric vehicles will be needed to meet the power level and duration requirements...

A structural shift from transaction-based, marginal cost pricing to fee-based service business models often accompanies We emergence of ?platform? markets, i.e. multi-sided markets where an intermediary captures the value of the interaction between user groups. The many examples include telecommunications, data storage, cinema, music and media, and the automobile industry. Why not electricity? In this paper, we explore how the electricity supply industry can be conceived of as a platform-mediated, two-sided market and the consequences for pricing. Through two cases, a balancing services provider for smart home energy management systems and an electric vehicle charge manager, we show where a platform entrant could position itself in the retail electricity markets between supply companies and end-users. The drivers of such a transition include increased volatility due to renewable generation, the new complexity of roles for end-users, and the introduction of information and communication technologies. Conceiving of electricity as a platform market where new entrants provide an energy optimisation and management service may stimulate a competitive ecosystem and innovation. We suggest that fee-based pricing would enable the objectives of time-varying pricing to be achieved without adversely affecting the most vulnerable customers.

Omnidirectional Sensory and Motor Volumes in Electric Fish

Active sensing organisms, such as bats, dolphins, and weakly electric fish, generate a 3-D space for active sensation by emitting self-generated energy into the environment. For a weakly electric fish, we demonstrate that the electrosensory space for prey detection has an unusual, omnidirectional shape. We compare this sensory volume with the animal's motor volume—the volume swept out by the body over selected time intervals and over the time it takes to come to a stop from typical hunting velocities. We find that the motor volume has a similar omnidirectional shape, which can be attributed to the fish's backward-swimming capabilities and body dynamics. We assessed the electrosensory space for prey detection by analyzing simulated changes in spiking activity of primary electrosensory afferents during empirically measured and synthetic prey capture trials. The animal's motor volume was reconstructed from video recordings of body motion during prey capture behavior. Our results suggest that in weakly electric fish, there is a close connection between the shape of the sensory and motor volumes. We consider three general spatial relationships between 3-D sensory and motor volumes in active and passive-sensing animals, and we examine hypotheses about these relationships in the context of the volumes we quantify for weakly electric fish. We propose that the ratio of the sensory volume to the motor volume provides insight into behavioral control strategies across all animals.

Photo-electric threshold for the clean surface.—C. B. Kazda has found the photo-electric threshold of a mercury surface cleansed of impurities by means of a constant overflow. In the present work his value of 2735A for the threshold of clean mercury is checked. Changes in photo-electric threshold of Hg. that take place in a high vacuum.—When the surface flow is allowed to stop in a high vacuum, some impurity attacks the surface, quickly raising the threshold to 2850A. If liquid air is not used, this impurity is present in larger amounts and attacks the running surface. Indications are that a surface film is formed and maintained in spite of the flow when liquid air is not used, or requires two hours or more for removal if liquid air is used. This impurity can not be one of the gases with extremely low melting points. It is not water, but may be a component of the stopcock grease. When the surface is left standing several days in a high vacuum, its threshold falls to 2680A. If liquid air is not used, the standing surface has a limit of 2560A. All of these values are closely reproducible. Indirect effect of hydrogen on the photo-electric threshold of Hg.—Pure hydrogen in contact with the surface does not change the photo-electric behavior. We have studied molecular beam epitaxy grown GaN films using electric force microscopy to detect sub-1 µm regions of electric field gradient and surface potential variations associated with GaN extended defects. The large piezoelectric coefficients of GaN together with strain introduced by crystalline imperfections produce variation in piezoelectrically induced electric fields around these defects. The consequent spatial rearrangement of charges can be detected by electrostatic force microscopy, and can be additionally modified by externally applied strain and illumination. The electron force microscopy signal was found to be a function of the applied tip bias, showed reversal under externally applied strain, and was sensitive to above band gap illumination.

We discuss the precession of spin-polarized ultracold neutrons (UCNs) and 3He atoms in uniform and static magnetic and electric fields and calculate the spin relaxation effects from motional v×E magnetic fields. Particle motion in an electric field creates a motional v×E magnetic field, which when combined with collisions produces variations of the total magnetic field and results in spin relaxation of neutron and 3He samples. The spin relaxation times T1 (longitudinal) and T2 (transverse) of spin-polarized UCNs and 3He atoms are important considerations in a new search for the neutron electric dipole moment at the Spallation Neutron Source nEDM experiment. We use a Monte Carlo approach to simulate the relaxation of spins due to the motional v×E field for UCNs and for 3He atoms at temperatures below 600 mK. We find the relaxation times for the neutron due to the v×E effect to be long compared to the neutron lifetime, while the 3He relaxation times may be important for the nEDM experiment.

Photo-electric threshold frequency for metals.—Free electron theory. A discussion is given of the suggestion by Millikan that in the photo-electric effect the energy of the light is transferred to the free electrons of the metals as well as to the bound electrons, and the threshold frequency ν0 is interpreted by the equation hν0=ϕp-Ek where ϕp is the work necessary to remove a free electron from the metal. In cases where Ek is not small compared with ϕp the theory leads to a lack of sharpness in the definition of ν0. Neglecting variations of kinetic energy, the difference of stopping potentials comes out equal to the Peltier coefficient; hence the uniformity of stopping potentials for different metals observed by Millikan is due, according to the theory, to the smallness of the Peltier effect. The variation of the long wave-length limit with temperature comes out ∂λ0/∂T=(λ02/hc)eσ, σ being the Thomson coefficient. In most cases λ0 should be practically independent of temperature. In the case of aluminum, after prolonged heating, the photo-electric current due to λ2537 was found to remain constant within 1/2 per cent as the target was cooled from 400° to 100°C and this constancy is interpreted as evidence that the shift of the long wavelength limit with change of temperature is less than 1A. The limit was found to be at about 2700A. Similar observations with a nickel target and 2412A gave inconclusive results...

Electric vehicles have been suggested as one of the primary possible solutions to fuel dependency and emissions reduction, but hesitation has been expressed as to the actual emissions reductions that electric vehicles would bring as well as the cost impacts on the individual vehicle owner. This Masters Project analyzes the impacts of various scenarios of the integration of a passenger electric vehicle fleet into the California electric grid through Vehicle to Grid Services (V2G). The central focus of this analysis was to determine what percentage of vehicles can complete their standard driving behavior with an electric vehicle based on different assumptions of charging availability as well as battery and charging technology assumptions. To accommodate a range of possible future grid situations, three technology scenarios were conducted. Using these three grid scenarios the model was also able to show what the approximate cost would be per vehicle-week and vehicle-mile of using electric charging. The data showed that even the pessimistic technology baseline demonstrated superior costs and emissions as compared to conventional vehicles. All three scenarios reduced emissions by more than three-fold and the cost per mile was found to be an eighth of the conventional vehicle cost. The cost differences result from lower electricity “fueling” costs as compared to gasoline fueling costs...
