The scope of this article is to describe persons with disabilities (PwD) being subjected to cancer screening and the relationship between some social variables and inequalities in performing these tests. A cross-sectional study of cancer screening among PwD was conducted in 2007 with 333 participants interviewed in residence in 4 cities of São Paulo. Variables in the practice of cancer screening, disabilities, gender, age, income of main family breadwinner, ethnicity, use of health services, assistance required, private health insurance, and coverage by the family health program were studied. Frequencies, χ²-test, trend χ² percentages and the Odds Ratios (OR) were used for data analysis. 44% of PwD attended at least one cancer screening at the appropriate time. Persons with visual disabilities and with hearing disabilities were subjected to more screening examinations than those with mobility disabilities and women were attended in screening exams more than men. Persons between the ages of 21 and 60 reported cancer screening more frequently than those between 80 and 97 years of age. The outcomes indicate that PwD have different attitudes toward cancer screening according to the type of disability, gender, and age, which were the variables that directly influenced cancer screening exams.

peer-reviewed; Epidemiological evidence suggests that poor physical health and depression are highly comorbid. To date, however, no study has considered whether depression in parents caring for children with developmental disabilities is partly driven by poor physical health. Using data from the Growing Up in Ireland national cohort study (2006 to date), 627 parents of children with developmental disabilities were compared with 7941 parents of typically developing children on scores from the Centre for Epidemiological Depression Scale, chronic health conditions, socio-demographic and child behavioural characteristics. Having a child with disabilities was associated with a higher risk of depression (odds ratio (OR) = 1.83, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.43, 2.35) compared to parents of typically developing children. Adjusting for the presence of chronic health conditions accounted for some of this excess risk (OR = 1.77,95% Cl: 1.38, 2.27). The association between having a child with disabilities and increased risk of depression was explained, however, by adjusting for the child problem behaviours (OR = 1.07, 95% Cl: 0.81, 1.43). This study has confirmed, in a population-based sample, the high risk of depression in parents caring for children with developmental disabilities after adjusting for the presence of a chronic health condition. Importantly...

non-peer-reviewed; Stigma is instigated through society’s judgement on what it deems undesirable, causing the devaluation of a person’s identity. People with intellectual disabilities are classed as socially different therefore undermining their identity as a ‘normal’ member of society. Objectives The principal research is based on how people with disabilities navigate stigma to form lasting relationships. The aim of this study is to explore how people with intellectual disabilities navigate stigma in their daily lives and their experiences of being treated differently. Methods A qualitative research method was chosen, using critical disability theory as a guiding concept. It proposes that disability is a social construct of our society. The experiences of seven people with intellectual disabilities aged from 20 to 53 were explored. Thematic analysis was completed and ATLAS.ti was used for data analysis. Results The participants had varying levels of understanding regarding their disability, none of them had a complete awareness of what disability meant and the implications that it has in their lives. The participants were involved in a variety of activities but the commonality was the overwhelming level of support, supervision and control being provided at all times. Conclusions People with intellectual disabilities are being sheltered from information that would give them a full awareness of their own disability. Families and the services involved in their care are creating a protective capsule around them from the stigmatisation associated with disability. This protection is necessary at times...

Black students, in general, are underserved academically (Darling-Hammond, 2000; Townsend, 2002) and overrepresented in special education (Donovan & Cross, 2002). Black students with disabilities are further overrepresented in more restrictive educational environments (Skiba, Poloni-Staudinger, Gallini, Simmons & Feggins-Azziz, 2006). Although the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2 (NLTS2) revealed that the academic performance of students with learning disabilities is positively related to the percentage of courses taken in the general education setting (Newman, 2006), the research specifically on placement of Black students with disabilities, particularly at the secondary level, as it relates to academic achievement is lacking. While previous studies have sought to determine which placement is better for students with disabilities, no study was found that specifically examined the impact of placement specific to Black students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) in urban settings (Fore, III, Hagan-Burke, Burke, Boon & Smith, 2008; Rea, McLaughlin & Walther-Thomas, 2002). This study examined educational placement, instructional best practices, and achievement gains of Black students with SLD in urban secondary settings using an ex post facto research design. Over the last 30 years there has been a paradigmatic shift in the field of disabilities towards assessing individual support needs in relation to social and environmental context rather than individual deficits. The capacity of existing assessment instruments to assess support needs is limited because most were designed to assess individual deficits and thereby determine eligibility for funding and/or services. Some instruments have been designed to assess support needs but there are several problems associated with these instruments including, suitability for use in only one disability type, susceptibility to rater bias, and failure to account for variations in support needs over time. This thesis attempted to contribute to addressing these deficiencies by examining the characteristics that are most predictive of support needs for people with psychiatric and intellectual disabilities and the methods by which changes in such support needs could be predicted. Two studies were used to address these aims. The first considered samples of people with primary psychiatric disabilities (N= 561) and intellectual disabilities (N =168), who lived in Supported Residential Facilities. These participants were assessed in regards not only to standard demographic and disability characteristics...

Test anxiety is one of the most confronting issues in modern times with the increase in the number of standardised and high-stakes testing. Research has established that there is a direct link between test anxiety and cognitive deficits. The aim of this study is to determine the test anxiety scores of the students with intellectual disabilities in South Australia. It also provided insights into the reasons for high-test anxiety in the participants under study. The Spielberger’s Test Anxiety Questionnaire was administered on students with intellectual disabilities in stage 1. Interviews were conducted with participants with intellectual disabilities, parents and teachers in stage 2. Questionnaire findings revealed that the majority of the adolescent females and males and all adult females with intellectual disabilities had high test anxiety scores. However, the majority of adult males with intellectual disabilities obtained moderate test anxiety scores. In the worry and emotionality subscales, it was also found that the majority of adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities were found to score high. The high test anxiety scores have been justified by the interview responses obtained from the three groups of respondents. A number of factors have been identified to be the major predictors of test anxiety in students with intellectual disabilities.; Poulomee Datta

For persons with disabilities, the activities that able-bodied people take for granted can be major, often insurmountable challenges. Attempting to enter a restaurant for lunch with friends can result in lengthy and adversarial litigation if the facility is not accessible to a person with a disability or other mobility impairment. This litigation would be initiated after the individual was effectively refused service; a refusal based on hislher personal physical characteristics. If a shopping mall is not equipped with "access amenities", then the disabled person may be excluded from shopping there and thus exercising consumer freedom. If workplaces are not equipped to accommodate the access needs of persons with disabilities, then those people are effectively barred from gainful employment there. If a municipal goveniment building is inaccessible to disabled persons, then they may be excluded from participating in council meetings. These are all activities that the majority of the population enjoys as a matter of course, in that they represent the functions of a free citizen in a free society. If a person is excluded from such activities because of some personal characteristic, then that person is subjected to differential or discr~minatory treatment. The guarantees provided in Canadian feden! and provincial rights legislation...

The aim of this thesis is to analyze social inclusion among young adults with intellectual disabilities in small towns and rural community settings. The specific context is three small towns in south eastern Ontario in 2006/2007. A phenomenological study relying on a hermeneutics cycle is undertaken to derive an understanding from multiple sources. In the first instance, policy documents related to the province's approach to supports for adults with intellectual disabilities, the research literature on experiences of adults with intellectual disabilities in rural communities, and conceptual models of social inclusion were reviewed. Seventeen young adults with intellectual disabilities (20 to 28 years of age), their caregivers (n=13) and other community members (n=20) from the three selected towns were interviewed. The interviews included quantitative tools and open-ended questions. Data from the Canadian census were also used to characterize the towns. The data collected led to quantitative (counts, median scores, proportions) and qualitative (significant statements, formulated meanings, themes) analyses for comparisons within and across towns in order to reveal the role of context in social inclusion. The results highlight the importance of context. While similarities exist among the small towns in the region...

BACKGROUND: An increasingly large proportion of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are frail. Measuring frailty is challenging, and generic measures of frailty inaccurately identify frailty in this population. In the general population, frailty reflects an increased risk of outcomes, including admission to long-term care. Institutionalization of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities may be a reflection of high levels of frailty. OBJECTIVES: 1) To develop a frailty index for home care users with intellectual and developmental disabilities using Ontario standardized clinical assessment data, 2) to describe the prevalence of frailty among these adults, and 3) to determine the association between frailty and admission to long-term care. METHODS: A frailty index was developed using published criteria to select items from the Resident Assessment Instrument-Home Care. Assessments of 7,863 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Ontario (aged 18-99 years) provided the data. A comparison measure of health instability, the Changes in Health, End-stage disease, Signs and Symptoms scale, identified individuals as stable or unstable. Using a subset of this sample (n=3,034) retrospectively followed over four years...

peer-reviewed;  In recent decades, criminal justice systems are, at least partially, being reconstructed as they demonstrate an increased sensitivity to the needs and concerns of victims of crime. As part of this, a new cultural theme of the victim as ‘Everyman’ is emerging. However, these generalizing tendencies conceal the multiplicity of experiences of victimhood and of interactions with the criminal justice system. As a result, certain categories of victim are rendered invisible and unable to share in the benefits of the more inclusive approach. One such category is victims with disabilities, and in particular those with intellectual or psychosocial disabilities. The purpose of this article is to write victims with disabilities in Ireland into the victim story more generally. Against a background of greater recognition of victims in Irish law and policy, it demonstrates the variety of ways in which victims with disabilities do not fit more orthodox, ‘everyman’, conceptions of victimization. It identifies the range of ways in which the outsider status of victims of crime with disabilities continues to be maintained in criminal justice policy, the adversarial process, the language employed by the criminal law...

Since the passing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), an increasing number of students are being mainstreamed into public schools. As a result, the percentage of students with secondary disabilities in schools for the deaf is increasing. Therefore, strong life skill curriculums are necessary in the schools. "Contrary to popular belief, people aff1icted with mental retardation and learning disabilities are capable of and enjoy preparing foodstuff," (Cox, 1981). Cooking is a skill that every person should have. A cookbook designed for individuals with disabilities will help individuals become more independent. A visual step-by-step cookbook will enable individuals with disabilities to complete cooking tasks independently and successfully. Five professionals in the special education field were interviewed to discuss the need for a visual step-by-step cookbook. Three of these individuals are teachers involved with a life skills curriculum; two work in group homes for deaf individuals with mental retardation. The teacher interviews gave insight into which cookbooks schools use now, if any. Interviewing group home staff provided information about how often the individuals with disabilities are cooking and what methods they are using. The information gathered showed that the development of a visual cookbook was necessary.

Eisenman, Laura T.; Assistive technology (AT) is linked with better academic progress and improved post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. Despite the emphasis on the use of AT evidenced by AT effectiveness literature, requirements by Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act to consider AT, and the proliferation of technological products, studies have indicated concerns about students' AT use. High school and college students with high-incidence disabilities are less likely to accept and use AT or they often abandon it after using it. There could be several factors that influence their decisions about accepting and using or abandoning AT. This study attempted to explore those factors from students' perspectives through qualitative analyses of semi-structured in-depth interviews with 17 high school and college students with high-incidence disabilities. Guided by concepts derived from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Self-Determination theories (SDT), constant-comparative methods were used to explore and describe the factors that students perceived as influencing their AT decision-making, their perceptions of AT decision-making processes...
