Pós-graduação em Ciência da Informação - FFC; Society has witnessed a cultural change in the use of information due to new technologies, mainly to computers and Internet. In this context, preservation of digital information emerges as a great challenge to be faced by information professionals, mainly derived from the constant enhancements and changes in information and communication technology (ICT), and in the environments in which information is inserted. Along with this new challenge, a new research area has been initiated, that of digital preservation whose agenda includes problems such as obsolescence of technological equipment (hardware), of computer programs (software), of information supports and of storage formats. Besides technological problems, digital preservation involves cultural, legal and managerial aspects. Although the concerns of the Information Area on the theme have been increasing, there is a need in literature to offer a sound theoretical discussion on issues related to it, and this is the proposal which may turn this research relevant. From the infinite universe of digital preservation applicability, the environment chosen for this research was that of Higher Education Institutions (HEI), where there has been an explosion of documents in digital form produced by teaching-learning activities in graduation and post graduation programs...

This paper identifies some of the most prominent issues present in today’s digital repository systems, which hinder the long-term preservation of digital materials. In order to address some of those issues, we propose the CRiB system, a service oriented architecture (SOA) supported by Web services’ technology, which will enable institutions to outsource part of the functionality that is necessary to carry out effective long-term digital preservation. The proposed system delivers a set of services that client applications will be able to invoke in order to perform complex format migrations; evaluate the outcome of those migrations according to multiple criteria (e.g. data loss and performance); and obtain detailed migration reports for documenting the preservation intervention.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)

Digital preservation is emerging as an area of work and research that tries to provide answers that will ensure a continued and long-term access to information stored digitally. IT Platforms are constantly changing and evolving and nothing can guarantee the continuity of access to digital artifacts in their absence. This paper focuses on a speci c family of digital objects: Relational Databases; they are the most frequent type of databases used by organizations worldwide. A neutral format that is hardware and software independent is the key to achieve a standard format to use in digital preservation of relational databases. XML for its neutrality was chosen for this representation of the database. The presented solution o ers a possibility to achieve relational databases preservation. The prototype follows the "Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System" (OAIS).

The ability to recognize when digital content is becoming endangered is essential for maintaining the long-term, continuous and authentic access to digital assets. To achieve this ability, knowledge about aspects of the world that might hinder the preservation of content is needed. However, the processes of gathering, managing and reasoning on knowledge can become manually infeasible when the volume and heterogeneity of content increases, multiplying the aspects to monitor. Automation of these processes is possible [11,21], but its usefulness is limited by the data it is able to gather. Up to now, automatic digital preservation processes have been restricted to knowledge expressed in a machine understandable language, ignoring a plethora of data expressed in natural language, such as the DPC Technology Watch Reports, which could greatly contribute to the completeness and freshness of data about aspects of the world related to digital preservation. This paper presents a real case scenario from the National Library of the Netherlands, where the monitoring of publishers and journals is needed. This knowledge is mostly represented in natural language on Web sites of the publishers and, therefore, is dificult to automatically monitor. In this paper...

The amount of digital content produced at academic research institutions is large, and libraries and archives at these institutions have a responsibility to bring this digital material under curatorial control in order to manage and preserve it over time. But this is a daunting task with few proven models, requiring new technology, policies, procedures, core staff competencies, and cost models. The MIT Libraries are working with the DSpace(TM) open-source digital repository platform to explore the problem of capturing research and teaching material in any digital format and preserving it over time. By collaborating on this problem with other research institutions using the DSpace platform in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and other parts of the world, as well as with other important efforts in the digital preservation arena, we are beginning to see ways of managing arbitrary digital content that might make digital preservation an achievable goal.; Page image PDF

The RLG/NARA trusted digital repository (TDR) certification checklist defines a set of assessment criteria for preservation environments. The criteria can be mapped into data management policies that define how a digital preservation environment is operated. We explore how the enforcement of these management policies can be automated through their characterization as rules that control preservation services. By integrating a rule-based data management system with the DSpace digital archive system, we expect to demonstrate automated audits of the TDR checklist for a defined set of local policies. The system is sufficiently general that one can also demonstrate the completeness and self-consistency of preservation environments. This is the concept that all required preservation metadata are controlled by management policies, and that for each management policy the required preservation metadata are preserved.; National Archives and Records Administration under NSF cooperative agreement 0523307 through a supplement to SCI 0438741, "Cyberinfrastructure; From Vision to Reality"

A recording is not available for this presentation.; Libraries are spending an increasing amount of their budgets to purchase and create digital content. What will happen to this investment in the next 5 to 10 years? Without a concerted effort, these digital resources could become obsolete. To make today's digital resources available to the researchers of the future, we need to make sure that we preserve this data. In this talk, we will discuss background and basic principles of digital preservation, including the OAIS reference model, issues with formats and the problems with interactive digital materials. We will also discuss digital preservation activities within the IU Libraries and the DLP and our plans for the future.

Cambridge University Library and MIT Libraries submit this proposal to share the outcomes of the digital preservation research work conducted through the DSpace@Cambridge project, concentrating on two main areas: Process Automation and Preservation Planning. Automation Digital preservation activity in its current form commonly involves a high level of human effort. In mediated archiving the archivist's efforts do not scale well. In self-archiving situations this effort can be a barrier to the adoption of the digital preservation activity. It behoves us, therefore, to look for opportunities to make this process more efficient through automation. The potential for sustainable preservation of a digital object can be improved by accurate identification of the file's type, validation of the file against type specification, and technical metadata extraction. Recently available software (e.g. JHOVE) [1] provides identification and validation for a number of popular types, and there are older existing technologies (e.g. the 'file' command) that have some useful functionality in this area. DSpace@Cambridge will evaluate the different tools, investigate storage strategies for technical metadata, attempt to gauge the utility of certain types of technical metadata...

This article describes one approach towards digital preservation and long-term accessibility of content in DSpace@Cambridge anno 2005.; DSpace@Cambridge is an institutional archive set up to deal with the long-term preservation of information in a wide range of formats over an indefinite period of time. In this paper we look at some long-term digital preservation strategies, as they are currently implemented in our archive. We describe the value of documentation of file format specifications for future data accessibility. We examine the impact and usefulness of constant concurrent data migration to several different formats. We illustrate our approach with case studies of applying these principles to chemical and archeological scientific data.

The traditional concept of metadata can be expanded to provide a set of information to support the management activities of the preservation of digital materials. This type of metadata, called preservation metadata, is designed to inform and document the process of digital preservation of long-term, assuring that digital content can be accessed and interpreted in the future. In recent years many metadata schemes and infrastructure oriented for digital preservation have been developed; the greatest challenge they face has been to anticipate what information is actually required to support a particular process of digital preservation. The most important and comprehensive initiative in this field is the PREMIS Data Dictionary, developed based on the conceptual infrastructure defined by the OAIS ISO standard. The basic idea of this paper is to review the main concepts, standards and technologies involved in the development of metadata schemes of preservation metadata.; http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1518-2924.2010v15n30p1O conceito tradicional de metadado pode ser ampliado para abrigar um conjunto de informações que apóiem as atividades de gestão da preservação de materiais digitais.
