Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo fundamental investigar, descrever e analisar o impacto das tecnologias digitais sobre as formas de ação nas artes cênicas contemporâneas. Entendemos que as tecnologias digitais contribuem para alterar a ação linear e frontal precipitada a partir de um ator humano, típica das formas artísticas tradicionais, dando origem a processos nos quais elementos humanos e não humanos interagem numa configuração ecossistêmica e em rede. O campo de análise e compressão de imagens tem recebido especial atenção da comunidade científica recentemente por abranger os principais sistemas de TV digital, comunicações via satélite e comunicações móveis. Neste contexto, as Transformadas Wavelets Discretas (TWD) surgem como uma ferramenta poderosa e suas inúmeras vantagens permitiram sua inserção em importantes padrões tais como JPEG2000, MPEG4 e MPEG7. O método lifting realiza a TWD sub-amostrando o sinal antes do processo de filtragem, implicando em rápido processamento por fazer uso das similaridades entre filtros passa-alta e passa-baixa, acelerando o cálculo dos coeficientes. Na literatura, ganhos aritméticos teóricos de diferentes proporções foram obtidos sobre o método tradicional, destacando-se os trabalhos de Daubechies e Sweldens e de Reichel. Sistemas de comunicações ópticas coerentes digitais permitem a utilização de formatos de modulação que carregam informação através de fase, amplitude e polarização do sinal óptico. Com o processamento digital dos sinais ópticos, é possível compensar as distorções inerentes à transmissão óptica, bem como realizar o sincronismo entre transmissor e receptor. Assim, junto ao avanço da eletrônica digital, a transmissão e recepção de sinais a centenas de gigabits por segundo se torna possível. Dentro desse cenário, os métodos comuns para a estimação de fase da portadora que chega ao receptor possuem baixa tolerância à dessintonia em frequência entre a portadora transmitida e o laser oscilador local. Nesta dissertação, é proposto e experimentalmente demonstrado um método de estimação de desvios de frequência de alimentação direta, com amplo alcance de estimação, eficiente, no ponto de vista de hardware, e compatível com os requisitos definidos pelo Fórum de Interconexões Ópticas (OIF ¿ Optical Internetworking Forum). Esta dissertação estuda as técnicas de recuperação de frequência e fase de portadora em receptores ópticos coerentes, operando no modo rajada. Inicialmente, abordam-se a análise e modelagem das duas principais degradações que afetam a portadora, quais sejam, os desvios de frequência, que são produto da diferença de frequência entre o laser emissor e o oscilador local no receptor, e de ruídos de fase dos dispositivos a laser usados em comunicações ópticas coerentes. Usando os modelos de passeio aleatório (random walk) para o ruído de fase, os principais algoritmos de recuperação de frequência e de fase são revisados. Os estudos levam em consideração as novas tecnologias de lasers para comunicações, que asseguram alta estabilidade de frequência de curto prazo (short-term), para uso em receptores ópticos coerentes operando a taxas acima de 100 Gbps. Um projeto de preâmbulo especial foi concebido, a fim de viabilizar a obtenção de expressões analíticas para um estimador ótimo, no sentido do Mínimo Erro Quadrático Médio (MMSE). Esse trabalho inicialmente faz uma análise da evolução dos sistemas de comunicações digitais, enfatizando a evolução dos sistemas DTV (Digital TV) e explora através de aplicações, os conceitos de IoT (Internet of Things), computação em nuvem, mineração de dados, big data e rádios cognitivos, propondo o uso de redes de sensores e banco de dados para uma diversidade de aplicações relacionadas ao uso do espectro de frequências, entre elas: o sensoriamento do espectro, a medição da qualidade de sinais ao longo do tempo, a estatística de audiência e a detecção dos modelos de propagação mais adequados para cada região. Na proposta, a medição de qualidade dos sinais de radiodifusão é realizada por sensores em campo e a interface gráfica é realizada através de Web Map Services, possibilitando a filtragem das informações por tipo de medida, área e período de interesse. In this thesis, we proposed the use of device-to-device (D2D) communications for extending the coverage area of active base stations, for public safety communications with partial coverage. A 3GPP standard compliant D2D system level simulator is developed for HetNets and public safety scenarios and used to evaluate the performance of D2D discovery and communications underlying cellular networks. For D2D discovery, the benefits of time-domain inter-cell interference coordi- nation (ICIC) approaches by using almost blank subframes were evaluated. Also, the use of multi-hop is proposed to improve, even further, the performance of the D2D discovery process. Finally, the possibility of using multi-hop D2D communications for extending the coverage area of active base stations was evaluated. Improvements in energy and spectral efficiency, when compared with the case of direct UE-eNB communi- cations, were demonstrated. Moreover, UE power control techniques were applied to reduce the effects of interference from neighboring D2D links.

In an increasingly digital world, the need for high speed and high fidelity analog-to-digital (A/D) converters is paramount. Performance improvements in electronic A/Ds have not kept pace with demand, hence the need to consider alternative technologies. One such technology is photonics, as it takes advantage of optical sampling, high speed optical switches and low cross-talk interconnects. Optical sampling derives its advantage from the application of ultra low timing jitter (<100fs) mode locked lasers utilised to provide high speed clock pulses. In this thesis the feasibility and simulated performance of three different types of photonic oversampled A/D converters was investigated. The first, and simplest design is that of oversampled pulse-code-modulation (PCM), where a 2-level photonic comparator is used to sample the analog input at a frequency much greater than the Nyquist frequency. Subsequent low pass filtering produces a digital representation of the input. The other two architectures that were investigated are the first-order sigma-delta and error diffusion, which add one level of error correction to the PCM technique. These two architectures require the functional elements of a subtractor, comparator and delay. The photonic comparator and subtractor functionality was provided by Self-Electro-Optic Effect devices (SEED) based upon multiple quantum well (MQW) p-i-n devices. Communication between underwater vessels such as submarines is difficult to achieve over long distances using radio waves because of their high rate of absorption by water. Using underwater acoustic wave propagation for digital communication has the potential to overcome this limitation. In the last 30 years, there have been numerous papers published on the design of communication systems for shallow underwater acoustic environments. Shallow underwater acoustic environments have been described as extremely difficult media in which to achieve high data rates. The major performance limitations arise from losses due to geometrical spreading and absorption, ambient noise, Doppler spread and reverberation from surface and seafloor reflections (multi-path), with the latter being the primary limitation. The reverberation from multi-path in particular has been found to be very problematic when using the general communication systems that have been developed for radio wave communication systems. In the early 1990s, the principal means of combating multi-path in the shallow underwater environment was to use non-coherent modulation techniques. Coherent of obtaining a phase-lock and also that the environment was subject to fading. Designs have since been presented that addressed both of these problems by using a complex receiver design that involved a joint update of the phase-lock loop and the taps of the decision feedback filter (DFE). In recent years a technique known as time-reversal has been investigated for use in underwater acoustic communication systems. A major benefit of using the time-reversal filter in underwater acoustic communication systems is that it can provide a fast and simple method to provide a receiver design of low complexity. A technique that can be related to time-reversal and possibly used in underwater acoustics is Tikhonov regularised inverse filtering. Laboratory teaching activities of digital communications courses benefit very much from utilizing a hardware testbed, since it greatly facilitates the understanding of very important effects introduced by real-world transceivers. We overcome the main drawback of communications hardware, that is, the cumbersome low-level programming interfaces provided by hardware manufacturers, by introducing a distributed multilayer software architecture. This architecture provides different abstraction levels to access hardware testbeds, releasing students from the low-level interaction with the hardware. The demand for cellular services has risen beyond all expectations. With the current growth of the analog cellular network, a strain has been put on the existing system and available spectrum. Cellular providers have been forced to use the existing bandwidth more efficiently by converting to digital technology. Four major digital cellular techniques are competing for marketplace dominance and each has the ability to expand the capacity of the cellular networks. PhD Thesis; Emerging applications such as high definition television (HDTV), streaming video, image processing in embedded applications and signal processing in high-speed wireless communications are driving a need for high performance digital signal processors (DSPs) with real-time processing. This class of applications demonstrates significant data parallelism, finite precision, need for power-efficiency and the need for 100's of arithmetic units in the DSP to meet real-time requirements. Data-parallel DSPs meet these requirements by employing clusters of functional units, enabling 100's of computations every clock cycle. These DSPs exploit instruction level parallelism and subword parallelism within clusters, similar to a traditional VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) DSP, and exploit data parallelism across clusters, similar to vector processors. Stream processors are data-parallel DSPs that use a bandwidth hierarchy to support dataflow to 100's of arithmetic units and are used for evaluating the contributions of this thesis. Different software realizations of the dataflow in the algorithms can affect the performance of stream processors by greater than an order-of-magnitude. The thesis first presents the design of signal processing algorithms that map efficiently on stream processors by parallelizing the algorithms and by re-ordering the flow of data. Image-capable interprocessor links often require the use of specialized communications protocols due to the large amounts of data that can be transmitted and the high speeds at which the data can be transferred. Without a set of generalized image-capable communications rules, these protocols are commonly customized to each interprocessor link application. The image-capable interprocessor link communications protocol described in this paper (IPLIMP) has been designed to limit the need for such customization at a low level. In order to accomplish this, IPLIMP provides simple methods for synchronizing and controlling link operations, sending and receiving data, downloading additional protocol layers, and communicating with higher level services. By providing this basic set of functions with minimized overhead, IPLIMP can be used as a fundamental building block for numerous imagecapable interprocessor link applications. The ultimate aim of this dissertation is neither to increase the state of the art in networking technology nor to predict the future structure of telecommunications networks. It is an attempt to raise the awareness of both the author and the reader as to the evolutionary forces driving vast changes in the telecommunications field. The impact of these changes will significantly alter the way we live and conduct business in the Information Age. For those involved with the communications field, the ability to make sound business decisions will require an in-depth knowledge of the technology and services that compose ISDN. Therefore this paper will explore the motivating forces, the potential services, and the technical components in the emerging Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). My interest in data communications was kindled at RIT and has continued in my work, both as a systems programmer in the telecommunications division at the Travelers Insurance Company and as a printing systems analyst for Xerox Corporation. This thesis has helped me answer both personal and professional questions about the future of telecommunications and to share this information with others.

Progress in digital skills has stalled. Despite growing broadband adoption and a range of media literacy initiatives, the evidence shows little improvement in adult or children’s levels of knowledge over the past few years. This is especially the case for the crucial dimensions of critical and participatory literacy. Yet citizens and consumers must rely on their digital skills as never before. Rapid transformations in the digital media landscape have put increasing pressure on individuals to navigate highly complex technologies, risking digital exclusion, consumer detriment, low participation and growing inequality. Government support has been cut just when it is most needed. Industry support is also vital, but needs a national effort to maximise visibility and coordination. Carefully targeting the promotion and resourcing of media literacy for those most in need could make a real difference. The effective promotion of digital skills and media literacy across the population should be a priority for the upcoming Communications White Paper.
