Tais escolhas balizaram as futuras instalações.

This research aims to analyze the impacts of epidemics in the interactions between Tupi and Jesuits in América Portuguesa between the years 1549 and 1585. Master in International Management / JEL classification: A14 - Sociology of Economics; F23 - Multinational Firms; International Business; The objective of current master thesis is to identify Portuguese cultural standards from the Swedish perspective. The cultural standards are identified by an innovative qualitative research method called Cultural Standards Method which is based on narrative interviews. The method was chosen due to its novelty and capacity to identify the cultural differences in a subtle level. The empirical data has been gathered during interviews with Swedish people who have sufficient working experience in Portugal. The first chapter of the thesis is general introduction. The second chapter introduces the theoretical framework which is divided between introducing the essence of “culture” and giving an overview of the cross cultural studies and theories developed. Special attention is turned to the cultural dimensions compiled by Geert Hofstede. The third chapter compares Portugal and Sweden using cultural dimensions models. The forth chapter introduces the cultural standards method. The fifth chapter introduces the empirical research and presents the cultural standards obtained, comparing them with the evidence from the cultural dimensions models. Thesis ends with feedback from Swedish and with author’s epilogue that are followed by conclusion. Although based on previous cross cultural studies in management...

Master in International Management; Since the launch of the Chinese opening-up and reforming policies, they have been accelerating the development of China in all the fields. In the education field, the notable changes is more and more Chinese students choose to go abroad to pursue their higher education during the last several decades. Although Portugal is not one of the favorite destination countries as a choice of Chinese students, in recent years more and more Chinese students are coming to go to Portugal to continue their study. As a result, misunderstandings and conflicts occur when the students with different cultural backgrounds encounter. In an attempt to identify and help solve these conflicts caused by cultural differences, this thesis focuses on discovering cultural differences between China and Portugal from the perspective of the Chinese students that are studying in Portugal. The findings show that, from Chinese students’ view, the cross-cultural management systems of the Portuguese universities and institutes are satisfactory in general, but flawed in some aspects, for which, some suggestions are proposed by the Chinese students. On a deeper level, the individual motivations of Chinese studying in Portugal are explored...

The concept of realism in visual representation has been defined and deployed largely within the domain of the Western artistic canon. In the field of art history, the term is often used in ways that depend on implicit, culturally coded assumptions about its connection with the formal markers of optical-naturalism. The Persianate tradition of pictorial representation by contrast, has been traditionally characterized in modern scholarship as stylized and decorative, with little acknowledgment of an interest in realism in its own visual language. Furthermore, normative Euro-centric attitudes have perpetuated the assumption that an engagement with realism entered Persianate artistic practices with the advent of Europeanizing modes of depiction in Safavid and Mughal spheres of production around the late sixteenth-century. This dissertation explores the topic of realism from the perspective of Persianate visual culture. In so doing, it proposes to refine our understanding of the concept in terms that accommodate the varied artistic production of cultures that laid claims to cultivating representational realism in their own primary sources. The first chapter draws on multi-disciplinary discussions to challenge art historical treatments of pictorial realism as a style...

peer-reviewed; In today’s healthcare environment nurses’ are urged to use up-to-date research evidence to ensure better patient outcomes and inform nursing decisions, actions and interactions with patients. Within the practice setting there is an increasing challenge to provide care to patients from minority ethnic groups. In order to deliver care to different cultural groups, nurses need to recognize and empathize with patients’ belief systems, being mindful of their diverse cultural needs. This article presents the concept of transcultural care and identifies issues within intellectual disability nursing through a focus on the components identified by Capina-Bacote (2002; 2003) and Cortis (2003): cultural awareness, cultural skill, cultural knowledge, cultural encounter and cultural desire. It highlights the issues relevant nursing practice, cultural care and service provision for persons with intellectual disability from ethnic minorities in Ireland

This paper examines the relationship between an exporter and an import agent in an international marketing channel using agency theory and cultural dimension frameworks, and proposes a research agenda with five testable propositions from this literature. Agency theory provides a way of forming an efficient exporter-agent contract and suggests that efficient contractual conditions are likely to provide the basis of a successful negotiated outcome. Cultural dimensions are elements that are likely to create obstacles to an efficient contractual outcome. This paper presents the concept of the dimensional gap that exporters may need to bridge in order to form an efficient contractual relationship. We suggest that in a cross cultural encounter, a divergence of cultural dimensions between the parties to the contract will impact adversely on agency costs and lead to contractual inefficiencies. By identifying gaps in the cultural dimensions between contractual parties, and taking steps towards reducing these gaps, the potential for such inefficiencies can be reduced, improving the chances of successful contractual outcomes. The dimensional gap considers the influence of four cultural dimensions on contractual efficiency. This paper presents five testable propositions suggesting that cultural gaps within power distance...

Cultural studies analyses have consistently viewed heavy and extreme metal as less culturally significant, less empowering for fans and less worthy of study than other major genres of popular music. Metal has been viewed as a reactionary and unproductive encounter with anger, aggression and alienation: a “nihilistic dreamboat to negation”. Underlying critics’ objections to metal is a discomfort about the genre’s apparent lack of commitment to progressive political values. In the cultural study of popular music, pleasures not easily understood in terms of ‘politics’ have been viewed with suspicion by a discipline seeking wider political agendas in all musical and subcultural practices. This thesis explores cultural studies’ marginalisation of metal by examining the critical literature on death metal, an ‘extreme’ variant of the genre that is particularly resistant to the kinds of political readings conventionally performed by progressive critics. Death metal bands frequently transgress social taboos, presenting as pleasurable or comedic material that is conventionally considered to be ethically and/or politically problematic. The kinds of listening pleasures that this material may offer independently of conventional ‘political’ concerns remain largely unexplored in the critical literature in the field. Via an examination and critique of the major critical approaches to heavy and extreme metal...

This thesis deals with métissage in New France and Canada from 1508 to 1886 - i.e. the process of cultural, social and political encounter between Indians and French and respective conversion and marriage policies, their mixed unions and derived mixed-blood offspring, the Métis and Halfbreeds. In 1508, first Indians were taken captive and brought to France; in 1886, the Act of Savages legally distinguished between “Indians” and “Metis” in Canada. Within this timeframe, colonial processes and policies of métissage, among which mixed marriages were the culmination point, are analysed. The theoretical framework of the history of concepts is employed in order to show how concepts on “race” changed and varied in the longue durée of four centuries, and how they were constructed and used in different contexts. It is held that the history of concepts is the perfect tool to analyse métissage as a concept that evolved over time, was discursively constructed and historically practiced. Métissage is treated as a Franco-Canadian rather than an Anglo-Canadian phenomenon. The fact that it was the French who pursued an officially backed policy of mixed marriages refers to Samuel de Champlain’s exclamation towards the Huron tribe in 1633: “Nos garçons se marieront à vos filles...

The Seleucid Settlement of Dura Europos constitutes an appropriate setting to analyze the process of cultural transformation in ancient colonial areas. The site, founded at the crossroad between major Eastern and Western civilizations, is a multicultural settlement that expresses the coexistence of Jews with various populations. This dissertation analyses how the Jewish group of this city used the local material culture to preserve their identity and at the same time did dialogue with other people. The transformation resulted out of this interaction is seen in the art and architecture of the two Synagogues that they built there and which constitutes one of the most ancient testimony of the Jewish art produced by those who lived in the Diaspora.

The present paper “Study on cultural pattern and human migration along the Chinese Silk Road (Gansu-Qinghai stretch): taking the Salar’s ethnic formation and development as an example” has a rather simple framework which unceasingly oscillates between structural analysis and historical narration. Starting from a cross-cultural perspective, it combines traditional historical insights and postmodern paradigms of conceiving history. It consists on three parts - concept definition, historical analysis and critical inquiries, fieldwork summarization - presenting a comprehensive research on the topic. Through a combination of various theoretical approaches and practical historical examples, it pays attention to the formation and development of ethnic patterns under the influence of human migrations, and describes above all the heterogeneity, variability, and diversity of Gansu-Qinghai regional culture and of its constituent ethnic cultures. It investigates, respectively, their inner structures, their historical transformations, and the forging and maintenance of specific boundaries dividing the ethnic groups involved, thus refuting by placing them under the category of “ethnic isle” or “ideal cultural type”. Ethnic groups that inhabit exclusively in the Gansu-Qinghai region (most commonly known as "ganqing diqu" in Chinese) are raised here as an example. They represent the central subject matter of the paper. The entire framework of the first part is dedicated to the discussion of this idea and provides a solid support for the following observations. In post-conflict settings real and imagined boundaries do a great deal to determine who is inside and who is outside of state-based narratives of peace and prosperity. Based on case studies in Rwanda and Northern Ireland, I provide an analysis of the post-conflict periods and the impact of neoliberal-styled governance on the dynamics of power. I argue that as power shifted, ‘peace’ also entailed a general social pacification, and prosperity equated to greater private profit. However, top-down social engineering has not contained the entire field of social struggle. I examine micro-level interventions taking place on the margins of mainstream discourse that trouble the moralizing state-narratives that seek to legitimate structural violence. Such spaces facilitate alternative values and practices that contribute to sustained social and cultural resilience, as well as forms of resistance. Post-conflict Rwanda and Northern Ireland have been impacted by both coercive and consensual forms of social engineering. In Rwanda, state-based framework laws and forceful regimes of local implementation rely on stark contingencies of reward and punishment to shape and control behaviour in the public sphere. In Northern Ireland, the power-sharing structure of the Belfast Agreement has reinforced ethnic politics...

In the first half of this paper it is argued that cultural geography is a dynamic and diverse field that extends well beyond a single branch of human geography. The boundaries between it and other sub-disciplines are often blurred. People have «different» encounters with cultural geography depending on their sub-disciplinary convergences. People also have different encounters with cultural geography depending on where they live and work. «Place matters» in the construction, production and representation of cultural geography. It takes different forms in different places. In the second half of the paper it is argued that as cultural geography continues to encounter «difference» in many guises, four possible future trends are likely: first, it is probable that there will be continued growth in cultural geography; second, there may be mounting recognition that cultural geography needs to be critical offering possibilities for radical critique and reflection; third, cultural geographers are likely to continue with their efforts to think about what, if anything, might lie beyond representation; and finally, cultural geographers are likely to deepen their reflections on the politics of knowledge production leading to more multi-language publishing practices in this area.; A la primera part d’aquest article...

These communities were here a few centuries before the Europeans arrived. They chose the Atlantic coast as their habitat, establishing their settlements in particular ecological niches. These choices were used as guidelines for the new colonial towns. A recurring process symbolizes this cultural encounter between indigenous and Europeans: the positioning of the new churches in line with well established indigenous rights of way.

This dissertation examines the recent influx of Pentecostal-charismatic churches into the Northern Region of Ghana, a rural, underdeveloped region whose predominantly Muslim population has increasingly become the target of evangelistic efforts undertaken by Christians from the south. Based on ethnographic and archival research, my study considers the locus of this incursion as a densely layered zone of anxieties and emergences, desires and contestations, in which the elaboration of novel horizons of sensibility and experience is refracted through the vicissitudes of the region's social, economic, religious, and political history. I argue that the churches' impassioned campaign to "take back the north for the Lord" - a campaign whose exemplary medium is the evangelistic crusade in which "signs and wonders" are mobilized as particularly potent technologies of conversion - demarcates a complex field of intervention animated by a plurality of forces irreducible to those of strictly religious provenance. An ethos of progress and success fostered by the country's development apparatus; the longstanding prejudices surrounding northerners and "the north" in the Ghanaian national imaginary; the specter of a Muslim threat that surfaces in a post-9/11 world and perpetuates amidst a global war on terror - these are among the contingencies that have come together to render this encounter possible. The article discusses the contact between Europeans and indigenous populations in the first century of the colonization of Brazil, taking as reference the work of ethnohistorians in North America. It focuses upon the multi-lateral nature of the contact...
