This is a brief report of a research project, coordinated by me and funded by the Portuguese Government. It studies ‘The Representation of the Feminine in the Portuguese Press’ (POCI/COM 55780/2004), and works on the content analysis of discourse on the feminine in various Portuguese newspapers, covering the time span of February 1st till April 30th 2006. The paper is divided into two parts: in the first part, I will briefly discuss the typology used to code the text units of selected articles; in the second part, I will explore the most expressive percentages of the first two weeks of February for the content analysis of the Diário de Notícias newspaper. These percentages were obtained with the NVivo 6 qualitative data treatment software programme.

O modelo foi testado como guia de análise de conteúdo, gerando conjunto de dados sobre o uso do recurso em veículos noticiosos brasileiros.; Infographics are journalistic tools distinguished by the non-linearity of the written text and the graphic organization of its content, aiming to increase the readers interest and understanding. In recent years infographics prioritizing analysis over decoration have been signalizing a transitional period in its production. This research proposes a model for characterization and evaluation of infographics for both academic and journalistic contexts, seeking to aid its production. The model has been tested as codebook for content analysis, generating data regarding their usage in Brazilian newspapers and magazines.

In this article we present communication theory as a conceptual framework for conducting documents research on tobacco advertising strategies, and we discuss two methods for analysing advertisements: semiotics and content analysis. We provide concrete examples of how we have used tobacco industry documents archives and tobacco advertisement collections iteratively in our research to yield a synergistic analysis of these two complementary data sources. Tobacco promotion researchers should consider adopting these theoretical and methodological approaches.

Over the last decade, public policies for science and technology popularization have been institutionalized in Brazil. However, there are a limited number of studies on the methodologies used and the contents developed. In this context, the central goal of this thesis is to examine the scientific popularization on nanotechnology in different media that respond to interests and values of different social groups, and to investigate, through a comparative analysis, the characteristics of the science popularization models utilized by these media, the contents addressed and those absent, and their educative function. The methodological approach consists of a content analysis, both qualitative and quantitative, based on the Social Studies of Science and Technology, particularly the Latin American strands, and the studies on non-formal education. The thesis analyzes the Science sections of the open television program Bom Dia Brasil and the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo produced during the period 2008-2010, and a non-aleatory 20% sample of the webTV interview show Nanotecnologia do Avesso exhibited during 2009-2010. The comparative analysis showed that definitions of nanotechnology considerably vary among the media, depending on who produced them and the circumstances that led to their enunciation and stabilization. In Bom Dia Brasil and Folha de S. Paulo the concept of nanotechnology emphasizes the material artifact...

This work examines the means for claiming and occupying available digital spaces for disclosing social themes in a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), in a University with technological characteristics. For that, the importance of providing a digital element as a resource for including transverse themes into didactic electronic archives accessible to the students is highlighted. The need to fully understand the importance of practices that adopt the linear and reductionist thinking derived from the classical logic and the comprehension of its limitations, that can be overcome with alternative approaches were the starting point for this research. The questions posed by the duality between Technology and Education, considering a complexity point of view associated with a transdisciplinar approach, allowed the integration of a diversity of elements such as: the use of technological resources in Education, the communication role in the learning process, pedagogical practices, educational issues, transversal themes and a VLE. From that, novel and challenging connections could be established. Examining the aspects of Education Emergent Paradigm along with the responsibilities attributed to the Brazilian Educational System induced a wide range preoccupation over legal questions associated to the educational context. The research structure is based on the complexity theory proposed by Edgar Morin...

The overall objective of this study is to analyze asset tracking of permanent property belonging to UTFPR, in all of its 13 campuses, as an Public Governance tool. The specific objectives were: to understand the principles of Public Administration and principles of Public Governance; describe the procedures, technologies and resources employed in asset tracking at UTFPR; attest that the principles of Public Governance through asset tracking at UTFPR have been observed; and lastly, propose solutions to improve the activity of asset tracking at UTFPR based on the principles of accountability and transparency of Public Governance. Because they are intended to meet a collective interest, public resources must be administered so as to maximize the benefits to the collectivity, abiding by the principles of legality, impersonality, morality, disclosure and efficiency. Internal and external control mechanisms have been implemented to prevent administrative acts from straying from this ideal. Asset tracking is a type of internal control that makes it possible to maintain updated information on permanent public assets, such as information on acquisition, asset record keeping and records on asset write-offs. To meet the objectives of the study...

This study performs a content analysis of the communication that develops in online educational situations. It focuses on two aspects of communication in a context in which we observe instructional leadership: how leadership is seen in the virtual classroom and how teachers view their role. The study attempts to answer the question of how teachers lead this methodological change, that is, instructional leadership at the service of distributed leadership. The study analyses the online interaction and teachers??? reflections on the communication between teachers and students in the process of virtual teaching, specifically in post compulsory secondary education in Spain.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.; In accordance with federal law, the President is required to present to Congress a budget of the United States government by February of each year. This action marks the beginning of the legislative phase of the federal budget process. This thesis provides a systematic analysis of communication between the executive branch and Congress regarding the defense budget. A quantitative content analysis of the President's budget press releases and published transcripts from the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) authorization for appropriations hearings on military posture from fiscal years 2001 to 2010, will demonstrate that the framework of the President's budget press releases can guide issue attention in Congressional hearings, and that Congress uses congressional hearings to frame their own issues. The SASC hearings provide the first opportunity for Congress to collectively engage in constructive dialogue with the SECDEF and the CJCS following the release of the President's budget.

Publicación ISI; This article considers whether 'sensational' news stories are intrinsically more likely to elicit emotional responses in audiences than other TV news stories. The research analyses a sample of British televised news in respect of empirically validated attributes, to identify the presence of particular content elements that audience research has shown to possess emotion-eliciting capabilities. The results show that news stories traditionally classified as,sensational' - a term that implies a dramatic and therefore emotion-arousing imperative - do not necessarily contain more emotionally arousing features than other types of news story. Only crime stories (among the most frequently occurring 'sensational' news categories) and, to a limited extent, political stories (a classic 'non-sensational' news topic) provide clear manifestations of the presence of high and tow emotion-laden attributes. Moreover, those topics containing more emotion-laden material are not the same over time or across public and commercial TV channels.

Literature suggests that female athletes receive less coverage in media than male athletes and that representation more often focuses on femininity than athleticism. Yet factors other than gender may influence media representation. Race and gender of target readers may impact representation of female athletes. This study reports the results of a content analysis of representations of white and black female athletes in 92 magazines. Representations of black female and white female athletes in Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Women and Her Sports from two different time periods, 2000-2002 and 2004-2008, were compared. Results reveal that the race of the female athlete and the gender of the reading audience affect the depiction of the athlete as primarily athletic or feminine.

This study investigated textual and visual variables of banner advertisements. A number of research questions were addressed by content analyzing banner advertisements from social media and social networking Websites, including YouTube and Facebook. Implications of linking types of banner advertisements to types of social media sites, including differences between visual and textual content of banner advertisements, are addressed. Results indicate that there were notable differences between banner advertisements found on these sites. Ads are more likely to contain greater visual aspects such as animation on social media sites than they are on social networking sites. Further studies should examine how visual and textual appeals affect recognition and attitudes towards a brand or product.

Angelini, James R.; The idea of celebrity in sport is a familiar conception within our current media landscape. Professional athletes have always maintained a level of celebrity status due to the popularity of sports within the American culture. Much research in the area of communication and sport seeks to tackle themes of race, gender, and in-game coverage portrayal. However, little examines what sports highlights and sports news programs offer towards continuing or challenging ingrained stereotypes, and how such coverage elevates (or diminishes) the celebrity status of these athletes. This study seeks to expand upon this current mass and sports communication research. Using theoretical perspectives of celebrity attribution, framing, and sports framing methodologies, the current study is a content analysis of the main network of ESPN in the summer of 2013. Results indicate specific athletes garner much of the descriptive coverage spoken by ESPN employees. In addition, women athletes remain underrepresented and misrepresented through the spoken descriptive phrases. Finally, results indicate significant differences emerge in the ways specific athletes are described based on athletic and intellectual ability. It is through these types of representation where one may see a clear elevation of celebrity status.; University of Delaware...

Jennifer Lambe; In spite of the journalistic ideals of objectivity, framing within the press influences public understanding of issues within the news. The influence of framing is apparent in media coverage of hate speech and the debate over hate speech regulation. Framing is the process by which public issues are set within linguistic boundaries, which determine how they will be discussed and thought about in the media and in the public. The United States and Canada have divergent legal approaches to the issue of hate speech, which was expected to be emulated in news media frames of hate speech. A content analysis method was developed in order to evaluate what framing is present within print news media of hate speech issues in the United States and Canada. The study found the freedom frame and regulation frame of hate speech in United States news coverage to have no significant difference in their prominence. The regulation frame was found to dominate Canadian news coverage of hate speech issues.; Communication
