The aim of this study was to analyze the evolution of the swimming science research based on the content analysis of the “Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming” Proceeding books series from 1971 to 2006. The content of all the 622 papers published in the Proceeding books of the Symposiums of Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming were evaluated. Two main categories were defined: (i) The “Aquatic activity” studied in each paper analyzed (included the sub-categories Competitive swimming, Water Polo, Synchronized Swimming, Diving, Hydrotherapy, Infant Swim, Head-out Aquatic Exercises, Fin Swimming and others) and; (ii) The main “scientific area” (including the sub-categories Biomechanics, Psychology, Sociology, Pedagogy/Teaching, Biochemistry, Physiology, Thermoregulation, Hydrodynamics, Electromyography, Anthropometry, Equipments/Methodologies, Clinical Medicine/Traumatology and Interdisciplinary assessment) applied for the assessment. There was an increasing number of papers published within the period of time analyzed (ranging from 23 papers in 1971 to 145 manuscripts in 2006). Comparing the sub-categories related to “Aquatic activity” the one with more research done was clearly the “competitive swimming” (ranging from 78.8 % in 1971 to 100 % in 1996). In the last decade there is a slight but increasing interest in “head-out aquatic exercises” (e.g....

The fact that adolescents are compelled to work can usually be explained as caused by financial needs of their families. The objectives of this study are to characterize the content and the structure of the social representation of adolescence work...

Background: Community-based organizations (CBOs) are critical channels for the delivery of health promotion programs. Much of their influence comes from the relationships they have with community members and other key stakeholders and they may be able to harness the power of social media tools to develop and maintain these relationships. There are limited data describing if and how CBOs are using social media. This study assesses the extent to which CBOs engaged in health promotion use popular social media channels, the types of content typically shared, and the extent to which the interactive aspects of social media tools are utilized. Methods: We assessed the social media presence and patterns of usage of CBOs engaged in health promotion in Boston, Lawrence, and Worcester, Massachusetts. We coded content on three popular channels: Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. We used content analysis techniques to quantitatively summarize posts, tweets, and videos on these channels, respectively. For each organization, we coded all content put forth by the CBO on the three channels in a 30-day window. Two coders were trained and conducted the coding. Data were collected between November 2011 and January 2012. Results: A total of 166 organizations were included in our census. We found that 42% of organizations used at least one of the channels of interest. Across the three channels...

peer-reviewed; Content analysis is a useful approach for analyzing unstructured software project data, but it is labor-intensive and slow. Can automated text classification (using supervised machine learning) be used to reduce the labor or improve the speed of content analysis? We conducted a case study involving data from a previous study that employed content analysis of an open source software project. We used a human-coded data set with 3256 samples to create different size training sets ranging in size from 100 to 3000 samples to train an “ensemble” text classifier to assign one of five different categories to a test set of samples. The results show that the automated classifier could be trained to recognize categories, but much less accurately than the human classifiers. In particular, both precision and recall for lowfrequency categories was very low (less than 20%). Nevertheless, we hypothesize that automated classifiers could be used to filter a sample to identify common categories before human researchers examine the remainder for more difficult categories.

This study examines the triple bottom line of sustainability, in the context of both profit-oriented and non-profit oriented organizations. Sustainability is a compound result of interaction between economic, environmental, and social dimensions. Sustainability cannot be achieved without balance between all three dimensions, which has implications for measuring sustainability and prioritizing goals. This study demonstrates a method for measuring organizational sustainability achievement in these three dimensions of sustainability. Content analysis of the annual reports of corporations from the United States, Continental Europe (and Scandinavia), and Asia reveals that the economic dimension remains the preeminent aspect, and corporations still have a long way to go to reach comprehensive sustainability by maintaining a balance between the three dimensions of sustainability. The analysis also shows a high level of isomorphism in the sustainability practices of corporations, suggesting that even the most sustainable corporations are taking a somewhat passive role in prioritizing sustainability goals. A list of 25 terms for each dimension of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social) has been developed which can be used by corporations to develop and communicate their sustainability practices most effectively to the maximum number of their stakeholders. In contrast...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; This thesis explores issues concerning computer aided content analysis for newspaper articles. Articles relevant to the Japan Air Self Defense Force's new fighter support jet (code named FSX) were collected from three newspapers in the U.S. and Japan. These data were downloaded and stored in a PC then analyzed using word processing software. At the same time, three articles were selected and distributed, along with relevant survey questions, to over 150 people. The survey was intended to examine the readers' responses to those articles. The results from the questionnaire and computer aided content analysis were analyzed, summarized and compared. These complementary studies were conducted to help determine whether computer aided content analysis could identify the information and impressions conveyed by these newspaper articles. The results of this complementary effort indicate that additional work is needed, particularly in software development, to make computer aided content analysis more useful. However, the results also showed the complexities of conveying and interpreting information.; http://archive.org/details/computeraidednew00hoso; Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force

In order to alleviate diabetic foot problems, patients sometimes seek complementary therapies outside the professional context. This paper describes the use of complementary remedies as a topical treatment for diabetic foot ulcers among Jordanians. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse written responses of 68 patients with diabetes who have used complementary therapies to treat diabetic foot problems. These 68 persons represented a subgroup of the study population surveyed using a questionnaire, to the effect of investigating diabetic foot treatments provided in Jordan. Informants were recruited from eight healthcare facilities established in the southern part of Jordan plus from one hospital established in the Jordanian capital. The study was approved by the Boards of Ethics of the participating healthcare facilities. Content analysis yielded the category "Complementary Therapies Used", which included a range of household items (olive oil, sesame oil, honey, and vinegar), and also some indigenous Jordanian herbs (Wormwood, Myrrh, Caper, and Henna among others). The remedies were used either as a monotherapy or as mixtures, to the common goal of treating diabetic foot problems. Other interventions like Al-cowy were also sought from traditional healers. Educational campaigns are required to increase the awareness of patients and their families on possible hazards of unwise complementary therapy use. The decisions on the use of such therapies should be made in agreement with the attending healthcare professionals.; Ma'en Zaid Abu-Qamar and Anne Wilson

The benefits of human milk are well-known, as human milk provides optimal nutrition in facilitating the growth, health, and development of infants and children. There are circumstances when a mother’s breast milk may be unavailable due to maternal illness, insufficient milk supply, contraindications, or geographical barriers (Dempsey & Miletin, 2010). Global recommendations support the use of donor human milk in situations where a mother’s own breast milk is unavailable (World Health Organization, 2009). Due to the limited supply, the pasteurized product is allocated to high risk infants within the hospitalized setting (Human Milk Bank Association of North America, 2008). Based on the allocation priorities, many individuals are unable to access donor human milk. In response to the growing demands for donor human milk, Internet based organizations have facilitated peer to peer human milk sharing. Given the fact that sharing human milk has been practiced as a covert activity, there is a lack of prevalence data (Thorley, 2008). To date, minimal research has examined this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to explore the description of sharing human milk utilizing an online commerce-free approach. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 13 research participants and analyzed using an inductive approach to qualitative content analysis. Qualitative content analysis was selected based on the recognition of the importance of obtaining a rich description when exploring this phenomenon. Outcomes generated from the research study resulted in emerging concepts and categories. The concepts from the data analysis consisted of the following: commitment to human milk; virtual nature of relationships; and making the private public. The identified categories include: 1) infant feeding practices; 2) experience with sharing human milk; 3) selection of donors or recipients; 4) relationships among donors and recipients sharing human milk; 5) shared doctrine; 6) use of the Internet to share human milk; and 7) informing health care professionals and others regarding sharing human milk. Findings generated from this study provide an increase in understanding of this phenomenon. The cultivated knowledge will assist health care professionals in working in partnership with families to ensure optimal outcomes.; Thesis (Master...

Background: Social analysis regarding oral health and oral health promotion are almost non-existent in the Australian context. The usefulness of such exploration lies in framing and informing research methodologies and health promotion initiatives and can improve our understanding of oral health behaviours and their social contexts. Methods: We conducted a systematic content analysis of a random sample of popular Australian magazines, newspapers and television shows from May to September 2012. Our sample included the top three best-selling magazines, six weekly newspapers, one from each available Australian state; and the four highest-ranked Australian prime-time television shows and their associated commercials. Results: Data comprised of 72 hours of prime-time television and 14,628 pages of hardcopy media. 71 oral health related media ‘incidents’ were counted during a five month period. Only 1.5% of incidents referenced fluoride and only two made dietary references. Women were represented almost six times more than men and the majority of oral health related incidents conveyed no social context (63%). Conclusions: Oral health messages conveyed in Australian media fail to provide a social context for preventative or health-promoting behaviours. In light of increased levels of oral disease and retention of natural teeth...

This study examines the potential incorporation of the principles of Multiple Intelligences Theory in the Jordanian EFL textbooks. More specifically, it reports on a content analysis of Action Pack textbooks for the first-, fourth-, eighth- and eleventh-grades by means of content analysis. The findings reveal that the moral, existential and spiritual intelligences are not incorporated in the activities of the textbooks under study; the verbal/linguistic, intrapersonal and spatial/visual intelligences are relatively more incorporated than other intelligences; and the inclusion of multiple intelligences is fairly unbalanced in the four textbooks.; Aquest estudi examina la possible incorporació dels principis de la Teoria d'Intel·ligència Múltiple en els llibres de text d'anglès com a llengua estrangera jordans.

Literature suggests that female athletes receive less coverage in media than male athletes and that representation more often focuses on femininity than athleticism. Yet factors other than gender may influence media representation. Race and gender of target readers may impact representation of female athletes. This study reports the results of a content analysis of representations of white and black female athletes in 92 magazines. Representations of black female and white female athletes in Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Women and Her Sports from two different time periods, 2000-2002 and 2004-2008, were compared. Results reveal that the race of the female athlete and the gender of the reading audience affect the depiction of the athlete as primarily athletic or feminine.

This study investigated textual and visual variables of banner advertisements. A number of research questions were addressed by content analyzing banner advertisements from social media and social networking Websites, including YouTube and Facebook. Implications of linking types of banner advertisements to types of social media sites, including differences between visual and textual content of banner advertisements, are addressed. Results indicate that there were notable differences between banner advertisements found on these sites. Ads are more likely to contain greater visual aspects such as animation on social media sites than they are on social networking sites. Further studies should examine how visual and textual appeals affect recognition and attitudes towards a brand or product.

The publication of academic research is important for its contribution to the body of knowledge. A periodic analysis of journal content leads to the identification of research practices; while it also identifies the challenges that researchers face. The South African Journal of Economic and Management Sciences (SAJEMS) is considered to be one of the leading publications in the field of economic and managerial research in South Africa. The SAJEMS was selected as the unit of analysis; and a content analysis was conducted on 257 articles published during the seven-year period 2004 - 2010. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the input and output factors relating to published articles, including questions on authors and article content, such as the various methodological approaches. The findings revealed that there has been a decrease in co-authored articles during the period 2005 - 2008. Although the contribution by practitioners increased significantly in 2005 and 2008, the majority of the articles are still authored predominantly by academics. It is promising to see that international authors were involved in nearly 20 per cent of the articles contributed. When it came to the methodological approaches, the articles employed largely non-probability sampling designs. Furthermore...
