The research is based on an examination of the emergence and development of the socialist consumerism in Yugoslavia which coincided with the political - economic strategy of the state by opening to the cultural codes of the West. Historic milestone in socialist Yugoslavia, in the process of shaping mass consumption in socialist society, coincided with the introduction of self-management in the 1950s. Idea was to use the mechanisms of the capitalism, within the socialist political system in order to create a modern consumer who enjoys shopping. Yugoslav modernist ("alternative") architecture super markets and shopping departments, during the late fifties and sixties, is conceived as a place of ambient visual experience. As a consequence, came a necessity for Yugoslavian trade companies to treat their sales areas (places) always updated with the contemporary tendencies in accordance with the latest architectural trends. One of the main goals of the research is to examine the role that architecture of department stores had after the economic reforms 1965th, and how it represented the market and social spending in socialist Yugoslavia. At the same time, paper would review the concept of organization and functioning of department stores...

This work shows by means of graphs, tables, examples and analyses, that the origin of the phenomenon of the global warming (intensive energy use), and the global social deficit, is the incentive for the demand of products and services that, in fact, are not necessary to a dignity and worthy life of the humanity (consumerism). Recent medical informatics and sociological literature has painted the image of a new type of patient—one that is reflexive and informed, with highly specified information needs and perceptions, as well as highly developed skills and tactics for acquiring information. Patients have been re-named “reflexive consumers.” At the same time, literature about the questionable reliability of web-based information has suggested the need to create both user tools that have pre-selected information and special guidelines for individuals to use to check the individual characteristics of the information they encounter. In this article, we examine suggestions that individuals must be assisted in developing skills for “reflexive consumerism” and what these particular skills should be. Using two types of data (discursive data from websites and promotional items, and supplementary data from interviews and ethnographic observations carried out with those working to sustain these initiatives), we examine how users are directly addressed and discussed. We argue that these initiatives prescribe skills and practices that extend beyond finding and assessing information on the internet and demonstrate that they include ideals of consumerism and citizenship.

America is on a perilous course. The outlines of a pending crisis are slowly starting to emerge. But the present crisis is different from those that have come before it. Its imminence is not foretold by riots, protests, or upheavals. Nightly news reports are devoid of references to it. Our perception of the crisis is clouded by a proclivity for self-adulation and self-congratulation. And yet there is a crisis, nonetheless. Like a cancer it spreads slowly through society. It is quiet and insidious. Imperceptibly it erodes our most cherished values. It is a crisis of rampant consumerism, stultifying conformity, and vanishing critical thinking. This paper aims to address this hidden crisis. In Part I, a more detailed description of the situation is provided. In Parts II, III, and IV, three distinct but complementary proposals are offered in response. Finally, in the last section, some concluding thoughts are put forth regarding the future of American government.

In this dissertation it is presented reflections about consumerism and its meaning to a group of sixteen high school students from a public school of Rio Grande, Cassino, Rio Grande do Sul state. The investigative process was taken through joint and also individual meetings which tried to investigate the students consumerism at school. Some tools were selected to stimulate the debate, tools like diaries, drawings, artistic installation, visits to McDonald??s and documentaries. Being a teacher at a school allowed me to be in contact with the ethnographic research. In the analyses of consumerism and its meanings for students it was used theoretical support of authors such as Michel Foucault, Mike Featherstone, Nestor Canclini, Jean Baudrillard, Ivor Goodson, Stuart Hall and Tomaz Tadeu da Silva. While discussing consumerism patterns the research pointed out some transgressions on the way the studied group consumes. This transgression is understood as a movement that changes - moves and dislodges the limits whether they are regarded as norms, moral conducts or habits. Furthermore, the consumerism also constitutes identity as a marker, used to gain status, recognition, pleasure, communicate tastes and lifestyles. Finally, it is suggested the school as a possible place to rethink the consumerism culture beyond the ordinary market of nowadays.; Nesta disserta????o apresento reflex??es sobre o consumo e seus significados para um grupo de dezesseis estudantes de ensino m??dio...

This paper develops a theoretically and empirically founded critique of the concept of political consumerism. In the course of the last decade, political consumerism was “discovered” as a new form of political participation, revealing the politics behind products. Surveys show that individuals more and more often use their consumption to voice political concerns, boycotting products or explicitly buying products for a political reason (boycott). I first discuss this concept and its different dimensions. I then offer an encompassing critique thereof, focusing on four main aspects: the conceptualization of consumers and consumption, the question of whether political consumption is new, the universality of the notion, and the articulation between individual and collective forms of political consumption.

This qualitative inquiry explored 7 undergraduate students' attitudes, habits, and knowledge of consumerism, fashion design, and sustainability. The postmodern study employed crystallization as its methodological framework to gain insight into how participants' knowledge is manifested in their daily habits, and used 4 methods of data gathering: semistructured interviews, visual exercises, journal entries, and the researcher's own reflections. Four major themes emerged: Knowledge-Concepts Linked and Fragmented; Dissonance Between Knowledge Versus Attitudes and Consumer Habits; Surrendering to the Unsustainable Structures; Design Process and Caring Attitude. Findings indicate that participants possessed some knowledge of sustainability but lacked a well-rounded understanding of environmental and humanitarian implications of Western consumer society. Findings also reveal a dissonance between participants' knowledge and attitudes-affecting how their knowledge influences their behaviour-and how reflection, creative thinking, and drawing initiate change in participants' underlying attitudes. Recommendations are made to merge a variety of theoretical frameworks into the educational system in order to create curricula that offer a holistic overview and unique insights into sustainability challenges...

Libro Electrónico; xii, 242 p. : ill. ; 24 cm.; Ted Striphas argues that, although the production and propagation of books have undoubtedly entered a new phase, printed works are still very much a part of our everyday lives. With examples from trade journals, news media, films, advertisements, and a host of other commercial and scholarly materials, Striphas tells a story of modern publishing that proves, even in a rapidly digitizing world, books are anything but dead. From the rise of retail superstores to Oprah's phenomenal reach, Striphas tracks the methods through which the book industry has adapted (or has failed to adapt) to rapid changes in twentieth-century print culture. Barnes & Noble, Borders, and Amazon.com have established new routes of traffic in and around books, and pop sensations like Harry Potter and the Oprah Book Club have inspired the kind of brand loyalty that could only make advertisers swoon. At the same time, advances in digital technology have presented the book industry with extraordinary threats and unique opportunities. Striphas's provocative analysis offers a counternarrative to those who either triumphantly declare the end of printed books or deeply mourn their passing. With wit and brilliant insight...

Morality, consumerism and the internal market in health care.

Unlike the managerially oriented reforms that have brought auditing and accounting into such prominence in the UK National Health Service (NHS), and which seem alien to the culture of the caring professions, consumerist reforms may seem to complement moves towards the acceptance of wide definitions of health, and towards increasing patient autonomy. The empowerment favoured by those who support patient autonomy sounds like the sort of empowerment that is sometimes associated with the patient's charter. For this reason moral criticism of recent NHS reforms may stop short of calling consumerism into question. This, however, would be a mistake: consumerism can be objectionable both within and beyond the health care market.

In this article I offer an overview of my doctoral dissertation, which studied the social imaginary of consumerism, and the psychological subjectivity it produces, through the dream - as both a leitmotif or thematic lens, and the empirical object of research. For such I employed an interdisciplinary exploratory outlook, whose theoretical framework first discusses the symbolic imaginaries (G. Durand) and their relations with the unconscious psyche, dream, imagination, and subjectivity (C. G. Jung), and then explores their relationships with consumption (Baudrillard, Bauman) and its semiotic imaginaries and ideology, focusing on the concepts of consumption dreams and dream-worlds of consumption. The main research aim was to explore how night dreams represent the colonization of subjectivity by the imaginary of consumerism. The method consisted in a multiple-case study in which each night dream was taken as a case and interpreted through Jungian hermeneutics. Findings stress that night dreams can offer a deep sociocultural critique; in them the imaginary of consumption appeared as a totalizing mass ideology engendering colonization of both symbolic imaginaries and the subject and her unconscious psyche. Conclusions emphasize such colonization as an anthropological mutation - the progressive commodification and dehumanization of the subject.; En este articulo describo a grandes rasgos mi tesis doctoral...

This dissertation explores the quotidian experience of economic development by studying both the material realities and discursive worlds of 1960s Argentina. I reveal the gendered relationship between economic development and an expanding consumer culture by analyzing the use, circulation, and meanings attributed to household appliances by journalists and public intellectuals. In the late 1950s, many economists, politicians, and intellectuals fervently believed they had found an economic model -- developmentalism -- that would finally provide the means of raising Argentines' standard of living and make the Argentine economy as robust as those of the United States and Northern European countries. Household appliances played a key role because they achieved both those goals, (supposedly) improving women's lives in the process by in part facilitating their increased participation in the workforce. Developmentalists believed their economic model to exist independently of ideology and cultural influences, but their model encountered cultural realities that limited its success. Consumerism--the way through which Argentines interacted with development--and its effects on family and gender relationships complicated the process. Both supporters and critics of developmentalism attacked women's roles as consumers to articulate many of their protestations against changes in women's status and to express anxieties about seemingly unrelated social and cultural changes. I argue that through the course of the 1960s the discussion about consumerism increasingly became a way through which different groups offered distinct visions of how "Argentine society" ought to be transformed.

This study draws on a broad array of written and oral sources. To trace the connection between economic development and consumer society...

Rebecca Sheppard; This thesis looks at women's consumerism in a rural western town between 1909 and 1944 through the lens of the McGovern Sisters' Dry Goods Store in Virginia City, Montana. To fully understand the store and its significance to the women of Madison County, the McGovern Sisters' Dry Goods Store building and the objects within, the cultural landscape of Virginia City, historic maps and photographs, the McGovern store records, and census records are analyzed. At a time when mass consumerism was changing customer expectations, and increasing business competition, the McGovern sisters found ways to keep their business in operation. The sisters did this by combining traditional business practices, including bartering and long-term credit, with modern ones developed by department store and mail-order companies. The sisters were savvy business owners, able to find ways to reach and serve their customers, and to stay in operation despite a rapidly declining economy. The McGovern sisters and their customers needed to operate within a masculine environment, etching out their own role and space within the town, with the McGovern Sisters' Dry Goods store being one of the only female centered spaces in town. The building was adapted by the sisters to create two spaces: a public commercial space that was that was accessible and attractive to women...

Body architectures, consumerism, high and low culture and hybrid processes in the hipermodernity are the main themes on the theorical framework of the present article, having as basis the critical works of authors such as Baudrillard (2004, 2003, 1991), Lipovetsky (2004), Canclini (2003, 1999). As a synthesis of these themes, we have chosen the novel of Fernanda Young, “A sombra das vossas asas”, in which the body of the writer has its own voice in the narrative; the plot is developed from the body reconstruction of the main character, who has as the goal of copying the appearance of the model Lee Miller. Midiatic aspects, which are present in the figure of the novelist, also takes part in this reading, besides the seduction, obtained through a type of a self personal project, guided by fashion and consumerism.

Like some fantasies (including Lord of the rings and the Chronicles of Narnia), the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling makes a social comment on a particular dominant discourse within a particular sociocultural context. One of Rowling's social comments is the dehumanising and fragmenting effect of the power and consumerist discourse in Western society - where great value is placed on what a person owns. An example of this theme in the series is the characters of the Dursleys, as prime examples of 'Muggles'. Although it is not power that Muggles seek, but rather to fit in by having what the Jones' have, which fits in well with the capitalist discourse as developed by Lacan - as discussed by Meylahn. Rowling juxtaposes this discourse with the alternative sacred story of the Christ discourse (community and fellowship are more important than material possessions), that she has subtly woven into her narrative. This alternative discourse challenges adolescents' identity and spirituality by offering the Christ discourse as an alternative discourse to the dominant discourse of consumerism and power they live in. In his article, 'Holistic redemptive pastoral ministry in the fragmented transit hall of existence', Meylahn (2010) speaks of a 'wounded Christ' healing a 'wounded community' and this ties in well with the Christ discourse presented by Rowling. Meylahn gives us a useful hermeneutical tool to interpret the actions of some of Rowling's characters. Hence...

This article focuses on the implied ethical principles of the history of the manna in Exodus 16 and the relevance of these ethical principles for the contemporary culture of consumerism. The principles that can be derived from this history are the principle of labour and rest, of sharing, the ethical principles of responsible consumption, the protection of creation and of remembrance of God's concern for humankind and creation. Modern consumerism with its underlying neo-liberal economic philosophy appears to violate these principles in many ways. The implied ethical principles of the manna history is thus highly relevant in the ethical discourse about economic planning, labour and rest, the environment and God's involvement in the modern world.
