This study aims to understand the conceptualization, as well as the main characteristics, of the Japanese mukashi-banashi, a genre which in the West corresponds to the folktales, by analyzing the elements that constitute it. Through the historical factors analysis, it was examined the origin and the apogee of the mukashi-banashis studies in Japan and researches of this genre in Brazil. Our goal was to survey the conceptualization of mukashi-banashi mainly based on the work of Japanese researchers and...

Mental disorders involving antisocial behavior and substance use are genetically linked and vary continuously. The authors present a review and integrative conceptualization of these observations in terms of a dimensional and hierarchically organized externalizing spectrum. As a foundation for this conceptualization, the authors introduce a quantitative, model-based approach to comparing categorical and continuous conceptions of psychopathology and apply this approach in an empirical study of patterns of comorbidity among externalizing disorders as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The authors present evidence that comorbidity among externalizing disorders is best modeled by an underlying normally distributed continuum of risk for multiple disorders within the externalizing spectrum. The authors conclude by discussing implications of the externalizing spectrum conceptualization for classification of disorders in the upcoming 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

The study of wisdom has recently become a subject of growing scientific interest, although the concept of wisdom is ancient. This article focuses on conceptualization of wisdom in the Bhagavad Gita, arguably the most influential of all ancient Hindu philosophical/religious texts. Our review, using mixed qualitative/quantitative methodology with the help of Textalyser and NVivo software, found the following components to be associated with the concept of wisdom in the Gita: Knowledge of life, Emotional Regulation, Control over Desires, Decisiveness, Love of God, Duty and Work, Self-Contentedness, Compassion/Sacrifice, Insight/Humility, and Yoga (Integration of personality). A comparison of the conceptualization of wisdom in the Gita with that in modern scientific literature shows several similarities, such as rich knowledge about life, emotional regulation, insight, and a focus on common good (compassion). Apparent differences include an emphasis in the Gita on control over desires and renunciation of materialistic pleasures. Importantly, the Gita suggests that at least certain components of wisdom can be taught and learned. We believe that the concepts of wisdom in the Gita are relevant to modern psychiatry in helping develop psychotherapeutic interventions that could be more individualistic and more holistic than those commonly practiced today...

Although social stratification persists in the US, differentially influencing the well-being of ethnically defined groups, ethnicity concepts and their implications for health disparities remain under-examined. Ethnicity is a complex social construct that influences personal identity and group social relations. Ethnic identity, ethnic classification systems, the groupings that compose each system and the implications of assignment to one or another ethnic category are place-, time- and context-specific. In the US, racial stratification uniquely shapes expressions of and understandings about ethnicity. Ethnicity is typically invoked via the term, ‘race/ethnicity’; however, it is unclear whether this heralds a shift away from racialization or merely extends flawed racial taxonomies to populations whose cultural and phenotypic diversity challenge traditional racial classification. We propose that ethnicity be conceptualized as a two-dimensional, context-specific, social construct with an attributional dimension that describes group characteristics (e.g., culture, nativity) and a relational dimension that indexes a group’s location within a social hierarchy (e.g., minority vs. majority status). This new conceptualization extends prior definitions in ways that facilitate research on ethnicization...

This study examined an experiential avoidance conceptualization of depressive rumination in 3 ways: 1) associations among questionnaire measures of rumination, experiential avoidance, and fear of emotions; 2) performance on a dichotic listening task that highlights preferences for non-depressive material; and 3) psychophysiological reactivity in an avoidance paradigm modeled after the one used by Borkovec and colleagues (1993) in their examination of worry. One hundred and thirty eight undergraduates completed questionnaire measures and participated in a clinical interview to diagnose current and past episodes of depression. Of those, 100 were randomly assigned to a rumination or relaxation induction condition and participated in a dichotic listening task, rumination/relaxation induction, and depression induction. Questionnaire measures confirmed a relationship between rumination status and avoidance; however, no significant effects were found in the dichotic listening task. Psychophysiological measures indicated no difference in physiological response to a depression induction among high ruminators (HR). However, low ruminators (LR) in the relaxation condition exhibited a larger IBI response than LR in the rumination condition. Overall...

According to the Conceptual Act Theory of Emotion, the situated conceptualization used to construe a situation determines the emotion experienced. A neuroimaging experiment tested two core hypotheses of this theory: (1) different situated conceptualizations produce different forms of the same emotion in different situations, (2) the composition of a situated conceptualization emerges from shared multimodal circuitry distributed across the brain that produces emotional states generally. To test these hypotheses, the situation in which participants experienced an emotion was manipulated. On each trial, participants immersed themselves in a physical danger or social evaluation situation and then experienced fear or anger. According to Hypothesis 1, the brain activations for the same emotion should differ as a function of the preceding situation (after removing activations that arose while constructing the situation). According to Hypothesis 2, the critical activations should reflect conceptual processing relevant to the emotion in the current situation, drawn from shared multimodal circuitry underlying emotion. The results supported these predictions and demonstrated the compositional process that produces situated conceptualizations dynamically.

Pain catastrophizing is a well-known concept in the pain literature and has been recognized as one of the most powerful psychological determinants of negative outcomes for pain problems. However, relatively little effort has been put into developing its theoretical underpinnings. More specifically, the intrinsic function of catastrophizing is not explicitly dealt with in contemporary theoretical models. The aim of this article is to add to existing models by proposing a development of the conceptualization of catastrophizing that stresses its function as an emotion regulator. We argue that catastrophizing can be conceptualized as a form of negative repetitive thinking, which is abstract, intrusive, and difficult to disengage from. It has been argued that repetitive negative thinking is a form of ineffective problem solving that functions to downregulate negative affect and that it can be regarded as an avoidant coping strategy because it impedes processing of emotional and somatic responses. Thus, in our conceptualization, catastrophizing is proposed to be a form of problem-solving behavior that functions to reduce negative emotion triggered by pain, and other related stimuli. Furthermore, we argue that catastrophizing is preferably regarded as a process where cognitions...

This study examined variables that may influence managers’ perceptions of the need for and benefits of training and promoting older workers. Age conceptualization, worker gender, tender-mindedness, openness to values, and emotional intelligence were predicted to affect the relationship between worker age and the probability and perceived benefits of training and promoting older workers. Approximately 500 working professionals read one of four training and promotion vignettes and provided training probability ratings, training benefits ratings, promotion probability ratings, and promotion benefits ratings in order to test twenty-four hypotheses. Results provided evidence that both worker age and the way in which age was conceptualized affected the extent to which workers were recommended for training as well as the perceived benefits of training workers. It was also found that worker age and the way in which age was conceptualized affected the extent to which workers were recommended for promotions and the perceived benefits of doing so. Of the individual characteristics studied, openness to values was found to act as a moderator of the relationship between age conceptualization and the extent to which older workers were recommended for a promotion and the relationship between age conceptualization and the perceived benefits of promoting older workers. Findings from this study suggest that organizations that wish to protect older workers from discrimination should make decision-makers aware of the influence of age conceptualizations on the salience of older worker stereotypes. By being cognizant of individual raters’ levels of the personality characteristics examined in this study...

Fit represents a central concept for organizational Contingency Theory, but most research maintains a static focus, neglecting that contingencies—and hence the corresponding organizational designs required for fit—are dynamic. Further, with multiple, often conflicting contingency factors—reflecting both endogenous and exogenous origins—in a set changing through time, organizations are likely to spend much of their time in conditions of misfit. This highlights the importance of research focusing on the magnitude and difficulty of correcting misfits over time. However, the dynamics of fit and misfit are not addressed well by extant organization and management theory. In this article, we extend Contingency Theory through conceptualization of dynamic organizational fit and misfit and reveal key organizational design implications. We begin with a focused summary of the literature regarding the nature of dynamic fit and then draw from the engineering field of Aerodynamics to inform our conceptualization in terms of stability, maneuverability and opportunity loss. This work enables us to develop and outline a conceptual model and to articulate a set of propositions and measures that form a basis for empirical testing. This work also reveals important organizational design tradeoffs and implications regarding dynamic fit...

Tagging has become a popular indexing method for interactive systems in the past decade. It offers a simple yet effective way for users to organize an ever increasing amount of digital information for themselves and/or others. The linked user vocabulary resulting from tagging is known as folksonomy and provides a valuable source for the retrieval and exploration of digital resources. Although several models and representations of tagging have been proposed, there is no coherent conceptualization that provides a comprehensive and precise description of the concepts and relationships in the domain. Furthermore, there is little systematic research in the area of folksonomy visualization, and so folksonomies are still mainly depicted as simple tag clouds. Both problems are related, as a well-defined conceptualization is an important prerequisite for the interoperable use and visualization of folksonomies. In this thesis, we address these shortcomings by developing a coherent conceptualization of tagging and visualizations for the interactive exploration of folksonomies. We provide an overview and comparison of tagging models and define the key concepts of the domain. After a comprehensive review of existing tagging ontologies, we present a unified and coherent conceptualization that incorporates the best parts of the reviewed ontologies. The conceptualization is implemented in the Web Ontology Language and allows for scalable reasoning on folksonomies. Building on the conceptualization...

WOS:000343680100001 (Nº de Acesso Web of Science); Background: Conceptualization of quality of care - in terms of what individuals, groups and organizations include in their meaning of quality, is an unexplored research area. It is important to understand how quality is conceptualised as a means to successfully implement improvement efforts and bridge potential disconnect in language about quality between system levels, professions, and clinical services. The aim is therefore to explore and compare conceptualization of quality among national bodies (macro level), senior hospital managers (meso level), and professional groups within clinical micro systems (micro level) in a cross-national study. Methods: This cross-national multi-level case study combines analysis of national policy documents and regulations at the macro level with semi-structured interviews (383) and non-participant observation (803 hours) of key meetings and shadowing of staff at the meso and micro levels in ten purposively sampled European hospitals (England, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, and Norway). Fieldwork at the meso and micro levels was undertaken over a 12-month period (2011-2012) and different types of micro systems were included (maternity, oncology...

Currently, the conceptualization of products whose shape and configuration depends on the context is a highly time-consuming process since it has to be achieved asynchronously between the real environment of the product???s usage and the design office -- In general, the designer manually maps the context in order to create a 3D model of it and then to start the product design process -- The literature presents some proposals to digitalize the context without the need of a manual mapping -- However, these approaches are mainly computer-centric tools where the designer is desk-bound and (s)he does not have a clear spatial perception since the interactions with the 3D models are usually based on 2D interfaces -- On this research we aimed to prove that conceptualization of context-dependent products directly over its real environment through gesture-based modeling tools, allows the designer to consider spatial and ergonomic restrictions that the context imposes to the product, through the real-time analysis of the interaction user-context -- In order to prove that, we developed a tool called ??ir-Modeling, in which the designer is able to create virtual conceptual products quickly and efficiently, taking advantage of hand gestures meanwhile (s)he is interacting directly with the real scenario in an Augmented Reality (AR) environment -- Air-Modeling also allows a continuous evaluation of the user postures involved in the product usage and assembly in order to analyze ergonomic risks...

The concept of State is difficult, being necessary to analyze its emergence and historical development. In this sense, it is essential the analysis of the concept of sovereignty, based on the coexistence of lord, pope, royal sovereigns, and also to refer to imperial ones in the Middle Ages. In this scenario, royal sovereignty has prevailed, together the assertion of the authority of the States. By this way, the reconceptualization of sovereignty was made, especially by the contractual view later inserted in the constitutional ambience. The naturally hard conceptualization of State has received significant doctrinal studies...

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Clergy are a dynamic group of the population: they point people to God, navigate social and spiritual waters, provide advice and guidance, and teach and visit parishioners. Research has shown that caregivers often neglect their health to tend to the health and well-being of others. Because of their unique role in society, the health and well-being of the clergy themselves is an important subject of research. While clergy health is a growing topic of interest in the Western world, very little is known. The few studies conducted on the health of clergy have found that in some areas, this group is less healthy than the general population due to their hectic schedules, lacking social support, and job-related stressors. With the exception of the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, almost nothing has been studied internationally regarding clergy health. In Africa, religion is known to play an important role in the daily life of its inhabitants; however, the overall well-being of clergy including mental, spiritual, and physical health remains under-studied. To date, nothing has been reported regarding the health of pastors in Kenya. This exploratory study sought to better understand how United Methodist Church (UMC) clergy in Western Kenya conceptualize health and how that relates to their health seeking behaviors.

Concerns have been expressed about the identity, value and usefulness of environmental education research in the anglo-speaking North/West. As environmental education research becomes globalized, important lessons might be learned in the South about trends in Northern environmental education and emerging issues in environmental education research. The Introduction outlines the risks in explaining how environmental education and its research is configured. The paper, first, summarizes the major 'currents' in environmental education curriculum and pedagogical practices and, second, highlights some of the major implications for environmental education research. The notion of 'framing' is introduced to provide a set of concepts for researchers to more creatively examine the assumptions they make in approaching their scholarly work while also encouraging a greater degree of reflexivity about the field's future. This future might incorporate an aesthetics into the ethics and politics of research and, in doing so, respond more sensitively to the need for greater attention to be devoted to developing the triad of ontology, epistemology, methodology in environmental education research and its praxis. An emphasis on the art and craft of framing invites researcher(s) to critically assess the conceptualization...

In this dissertation the GEONTO-MET methodology is presented. It is oriented to formalize the geographic domain conceptualization according to the specifications of the Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Geografía e Informática (INEGI). The main goal is to provide semantic descriptions, which represent the properties and relations describing so the behavior of geographic objects and taking into account these features directly from the geographic domain ontology. The thesis also establishes a solid basis for future automatic interpretations of geographic regions oriented to decision making process. In other words, the geographic domain conceptualization can be used to generate new knowledge in an automatic way and make spatial analysis more accurate. Having a semantic description of a geographic domain allows establishing the guidelines of a spatial reasoning. That is, if the behavior of geographic objects involved in an ontology partition is known, then one can understand and interpret the semantics that they represent and explore the implicit inference from the conceptualization. Summing up, this work presents a methodology allowing integrate and share geospatial information. GEONTO -MET provides feasible solutions towards these and other related issues...
