Simpósio BOBCATSSS 2009, organizado conjuntamente por alunos da Universidade de Tampere na Finlândia e a Universidade do Porto em Portugal; The qualitative analysis done on interviews to 20 teacher librarians, about their perceptions on factors that might impact students’ educational success seems to reveal that collaborative work is one of the conditions for this success to exist and one of the biggest challenges to those teachers. The theme collaboration appears in the discourse of all interviewees and it was not found significant differences of opinion, in what refers to its importance, between teachers with and without specific training to perform their tasks in the school libraries belonging to schools with diverse characteristics and geographical location. Nevertheless, it was not identified any real collaboration practices between teachers but only cases of coordination and / or cooperation. Some of the conditions most referred by the interviewed teacher librarians as “against” to and “in favour” of collaborative work and educational success, where respectively, lack of time and the existence of a full time teacher librarian. Some suggestions and / or recommendations are done to the responsible for the organisation and development of school libraries as to gather efforts to get the teacher librarian post institutionalised...

This paper discusses how several teachers were involved in a distance in-service course inspired by the notion of teachers’ inquiry. The participants are middle and secondary school teachers who register and work with a partner. We provide case studies of three groups of teachers, tracing their professional development concerning mathematical investigations, reflection and collaboration practices. The three cases show strikingly different experiences. Some teachers adjusted well to the format and activities proposed but others had trouble in assuming an active role.

This paper explores the potential impact of collaborative technologies in improving management education. The first goal is to expose students to tools and practices that not only assist them with their current studies, but also serve to reinforce individual and team competencies that can facilitate their entry into the workforce. In their positions as future managers they will be expected to not only be familiar with common business practices but also to understand the implications of information technology for business; in this case with emphasis on tools and techniques that can help businesses flourish in the networked economy. With an ever-increasing recognition that e-learning tools are important for (re-)training employees, these three scenarios offer examples of how business schools might expand the boundaries of e-collaboration to help their students. These experiments have been conducted in management programs. In the first two scenarios, students use collaborative platforms in some of their daily work. The third experiment is based on a student-centred design of a learning portal. Our experience reinforces a certain number of hypotheses influencing the impact of collaborative technologies in management education. To begin with...

This research presents an analysis of collaboration in Pierre Perrault’s film projects.

ABSTRACT THE ROLE OF U.S. LAW FACULTY IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: STRIVING FOR EFFECTIVE CROSS-CULTURAL COLLABORATION Peggy Maisel Florida International University College of Law This article focuses on one of the key ways in which the trend toward globalization and the creation of a more integrated world has manifested itself in the legal education community: the increased number of visits by U.S. lawyers and law professors to overseas law schools. A large number of those consultants have come from the clinical law community, and specific attention is paid here to the efforts of these clinicians both in broad based projects in Iraq, China and Russia as well as smaller scale ones in other parts of the world, particularly sub-Saharan Africa. The article’s jumping off point is to contrast these recent efforts with those forty years ago during the “Law and Development Movement,” an era which has been severely criticized because the American experts who visited foreign countries then never bothered to learn the local systems and practices and instead primarily tried to recreate the way justice was administered and law was taught in the U.S. The failure of those efforts demonstrated the need to adopt a different approach, and the data reviewed for this article indicates that to successfully support the implementation of positive reforms in other countries...

peer-reviewed; While organisations recognise the advantages offered by global software development, there are many socio-technical barriers that affect successful collaboration in this inter-cultural environment. In this paper we present a review of the global software development literature where we highlight collaboration problems experienced by a cross-section of organisations in twenty-six studies. We also look at the literature to answer how organisations are over- coming these barriers in practice. We build on our previous study on global software development where we define collaboration as four practices related to agreeing, allocating, and planning goals, objectives, and tasks among distributed teams. We found that the key barriers to collaboration are geographic, temporal, cultural, and linguistic distance; the primary solutions to overcoming these barriers include site visits, synchronous communication technology, and knowledge sharing infrastructure to capture implicit knowledge and make it explicit.

This thesis aims at describing and understanding the communication practices that sustain the consensual decision-making of an interorganizational collaboration (CI) collective...

The Government of Bulgaria (GoB) is concerned that large retail chains may be using their superior bargaining position to dictate the terms of contractual relations with their suppliers. The Government believes that this constitutes unfair trading practices (UTP) and remedies should be found in the nation's competition policy framework. The GoB is considering the introduction of the concept of significant market power (SMP) into the competition legislation. To address the UTP issues in business to business (B2B) relations in the buyer supplier relations, the Minister of Finance of the GoB asked the World Bank in end-October 2013 for technical support in the area of competition. In November 2013, the task was further specified and the GoB asked the World Bank to explore how and whether the SMP concept, anchored in the competition policy framework, will effectively address UTP in B2B relations. The World Bank organized a technical workshop, titled significant market power and unfair trading practices: issues and challenges in collaboration with the office of the Deputy Prime Minister for economic development and the Bulgarian commission for protection of competition. The workshop presented the mixed success of international practices in addressing unfair trading practices. The World Bank analyzed European Union (EU) member state policies in addressing unfair trading practices against the following criteria: effectiveness...

Social networking and collaboration platforms don't work without people. The most advanced technology won't achieve results without a devoted user base that creates and shares content. The World Bank's social collaboration platform 'Scoop' prioritizes relationships with users as part of the user adoption and engagement strategy. This smart lesson describes the original development of Scoop, its initial release for trial among a select group of 'Superusers,' and the ongoing refinement of its functionalities to meet the Bank's business needs. Lessons learned speak to the importance of bolstering the Superusers so they in turn can engage a broader community of users and turn them into champions for social collaboration.

New communication technologies are changing the way World Bank Group (WBG) staff work and interact with their colleagues. For example, teams in different locations and time zones can use virtual collaboration platforms for communication and knowledge management. During 2009 and 2010, the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) and Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM) units volunteered to participate in the pilot phase of the rollout of SharePoint, a common work space for teams that bundles a number of functions previously available only as separate applications. At the same time, there was an increase in demand across the WBG for a Facebook-type collaboration platform, called 'Scoop,' which responded to teams' need for a virtual platform to support social collaboration. SharePoint had already exceeded expectations, with many staff members from different units in the WBG headquarters and country offices becoming active users, and the number of site requests increasing weekly. This demand brought the need to identify and group all SharePoint site owners and users so everyone could connect...

The purpose of this study was to investigate how teacher identity norms relate to teacher collaboration among the practices of elementary teachers in Ontario. Using quantitative research methods, the data indicated two clusters of teacher identity norms. The norm cluster of innovation, interdependence, and cooperation showed positive correlations with collaboration and the norm cluster of conservatism, individualism, and competition showed negative correlations with collaboration. The two clusters of norms also correlated with each other. The data showed that teachers highly valued collaboration as part of their teaching practice but did not always experience it in their school setting. The analysis suggested that if schools reinforce norms of innovation, interdependence, and cooperation, collaboration will be nurtured. Further, the data showed that if norms of conservatism, individualism, and competition are continued in school cultures, then collaboration will not be sustained. As a broad educational reform agenda, teacher collaboration is used (a) to support school cultures, (b) to change teaching practices, and (c) to implement policy-based initiatives. This research is expected to benefit teachers in its capacity to inform policy makers concerning the highly complex nature of teacher collaboration and some of the factors that impact it. With an understanding of the relationships between teacher identity norms and collaboration...

Corporate sustainability has matured, evolved, and expanded in scope, however social and environmental issues continue to persist globally. Many firms now recognize that inter-firm collaboration is a cost-effective way to address systemic issues that are bigger than any one firm, and unlock the shared value that comes with systemic change. There are many examples where firms have worked together in collaborative relationships, only to fall short of their goals due to competitive self-interest, a shortage of trust, and the absence of a fully shared purpose. These successes and failures beg the question as to why some collaborative groups are more effective and create more value than others. To examine this question more deeply, we looked at collaboration in the global apparel and footwear sector. The sector’s widespread impacts are associated with rapidly changing market forces, including downward pressure on production costs, geographically dispersed production, high pricing volatility, low market predictability, and typically low profit margins. The highly integrated, complex, and competitive industry results in a downward spiral of quality, labor standards, and environmental pollution. Despite significant action and investment by firms...

European Master in Social Work with Families and Children; In attempt to ensure equal education opportunities to all children, collaboration remains a fundamental best practice element of inclusive schools in Norway, usually referred to as “one school for all”. Various professionals are employed to promote equity in education. The aim of this study was to investigate how various co-located professionals, including ordinary teachers, special needs teachers, nurses, social workers, and social educators, collaborate in an inclusive school. Among the key questions are: How do they understand and consider child participation, and how do they negotiate their professional identity from collaborative work? I employed a qualitative descriptive case study. Using open-ended and semi-structured qualitative interview method I explored their experiences of collaborative practices and child participation, in order to gain a deeper understanding of interprofessional collaboration. I interviewed teachers, social worker, milieu therapist/special needs teacher, social educator, nurse and one school leader (Principal). The interviews with professionals showed that they were positive about interprofessionalism. They seem to share a common goal of working together to provide equal education opportunity to all children. The processes and practices that emerged showed that professionals base their work on interprofessional values such as shared responsibility...

This paper reports the main results of an investigation that aimed to study the influence of teacher self-efficacy on collaboration between teachers.
