The objective of this research is to analyse the influence of the key characteristics of work on satisfaction with the rewards...

BACKGROUND: Although maternal employment is considered a risk factor for low birthweight (LBW), the manner in which employment might affect birthweight is poorly understood. In this analysis, selected characteristics of employment during pregnancy were examined for effects on pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: Work characteristics included the number of hours per week, physical activities, and environmental conditions. The outcomes of interest were fetal growth retardation (less than 2500 grams at term) and preterm delivery (less than 37 weeks). The study population consisted of 2711 non-Black, married mothers who participated in the 1980 National Natality Survey (NNS). The NNS data were merged with data from the 1977 revision of The Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) from which measures of occupational physical activities and environmental exposures were obtained. Logistic regression was used in the analysis. RESULTS: Those who worked 40 or more hours per week were more likely than women who worked fewer hours to have a low birthweight delivery at greater than or equal to 37 weeks. No physical or environmental characterics of work were associated with low birthweight or preterm delivery. CONCLUSIONS: Non-Black married American women may face a risk of delivering low-birthweight babies at or near term only if they work 40 or more hours each week. However...

Purpose: To determine the epidemiological characteristics of work-related eye injury in representative southwest region of China. Methods: Patients with eye injuries treated at the Ninth People’s Hospital of Chongqing from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2014 were included in the current study. All patients completed a comprehensive examination and interview. Demographic characteristics and injury details were recorded. The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and Birmingham Eye Trauma Terminology (BETT) were used. Results: The average age of eye injury patients was 37.52 years and the majority were male. Among the 1055 total patients, approximately 42.9% of the injuries were work-related. The highest proportion of occupational eye trauma was observed in the group between 36 and 45 years of age. Occupational ocular trauma occurred more frequently in summer, with most from 16:00 to 18:00. Metal was the most common injury cause. Foreign body on external eye was the most common diagnosis. Workers in the manufacturing industry without pre-work safety training or eye protection were far more likely to suffer from occupational ocular trauma than those with training and protection. Conclusions: This study provides insight into the epidemiological characteristics of occupational ocular trauma in southwest region of China. The current findings might be considered as a baseline for future research on regional work-related eye injuries. Our findings will provide valuable information for further development of preventive strategies.

Poly-l-lysine and hexadimethrine bromide (polybrene) are cationic polymers which are frequently used to enhance the transduction efficiency of recombinant retroviruses in gene therapy experiments. Conversely, chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan is an anionic polymer endogenously present in retrovirus stocks which inhibits transduction efficiency. An experimental study was performed to determine the mechanisms of retrovirus transduction modulation by these charged polymers, and it was found that they were capable of increasing or decreasing the flux of virus particles onto the cell surface. These effects, and adsorption in general, were independent of the cellular receptor-virus envelope interaction which was believed to provide the driving force for initial virus attachment. In order to consider the feasibility of alternative driving forces for virus attachment, a mathematical model of adsorption was constructed taking into account the electrostatic properties of the system. The model predicted that either cationic polymer-mediated virus aggregation or membrane charge shielding could yield adsorption phenomenon consistent with the previous observations. An experimental study was undertaken to distinguish between these two potential mechanisms...

The development of complex systems is a challenging endeavor which has captured the attentions of scholars and practitioners alike. Throughout the decades, numerous methods have been proposed to help manage such development efforts more effectively and efficiently. Some of these methods, such as prototyping, concurrent engineering, iterative model for software development, and system-focused development for R&D, are process models which recommend better ways to structure the development process to handle the complexity of the system under development. This thesis seeks to understand the complex system development from a risk perspective. Continuing from the work done by other researchers, this work combines issues which are traditionally considered separately into one single model. More specifically, the model explicitly captures the dependencies in the system and the structure of an iterative development process and their interactions. The resulting mathematical problem demonstrates the risk characteristics of a development process. It shows that the optimality calls for a trade-off between the reduction of the probability of risk and the increase in the impact of risk. From its structure, the model also helps us understand how different aspects of system architecture affect the structure and the performance of the development process. In addition...

Essay One: Explaining the Start and Fizzle of Organizational Change: Co-evolving Process and Content The theme that sustaining efforts to change is difficult appears in many guises throughout the organizations. The tendency for change processes to run out of energy and momentum is widely recognized. In this essay, I offer an inductive study of the dynamics of organizational change that describes situated human interactions to explain the observed trajectory of organizational behavior. As a window through which to view change, I study a manufacturer adopting production practices based on concepts of lean manufacturing and the so-called Toyota Production System (TPS). I develop a grounded theory based on extensive fieldwork observing a change effort that began with temporary improvement but subsequently entered a phase of decline, the characteristic start and fizzle of change. I examine how the actions of various groups interact with each other and with characteristics of the workplace. I then induce a model that characterizes the dynamics of participatory change. The model draws on a close examination of how people do the work of process improvement to identify a set of mechanisms through which process and content interact to constitute the patterns of organizing that result. I find that front-line participation led workers to generate ideas...

The importance and achievement of work values were found to be significant variables in the job characteristics-job outcome relationship when investigated with a sample of 117 correctional nurses. Data collected via mailed questionnaires were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. The results indicated that the achievement of intrinsic work values was found to mediate the relationship between job characteristics and internal work motivation and satisfaction, adding considerable explained variance to each of the job outcomes. In addition, the importance of the same intrinsic work values moderated the overall relationship as well as the relationship between job characteristics and achievement of work values. The importance of work values did not, however, moderate the achievement of work values-job outcome relationship as predicted. The practical implications for correctional administrators and nurses, as well as implications for further research were discussed.

The characteristics of work have an impact on individuals’ personal lives, including on health and close personal relationships. Previous research into the negative spillover effects from work to marital quality has predominantly examined structural job characteristics, such as job hours and shift work. This study used data from a large representative community sample of midlife (aged 40–44 at baseline) employed persons in marriage-like relationships (n = 2,054) to investigate the relationship between psychosocial job characteristics and relationship quality. Data from three waves of the Personality and Total Health (PATH) Through Life Survey were analysed. The results show that all psychosocial job adversities (high job demands, low job control, and job insecurity) were independently associated with lower levels of positive support from partners for both men and women. In addition, there was a linear relationship between the number of psychosocial adversities reported and lower levels of positive support from partners. These findings are relevant to policy makers in the areas of employment and family services. They identify the potential broader social costs of adverse psychosocial characteristics at work. This study sets the scene for further longitudinal research to examine the causal links between psychosocial job quality and relationship quality; Funding for the PATH study was provided by Program Grants no. 179805 and no. 418039 from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)...

The present study tested a nomological net of work engagement that was derived from its extant research. Two of the main work engagement models that have been presented and empirically tested in the literature, the JD-R model and Kahn’s model, were integrated to test the effects that job features and personal characteristics can have on work engagement through the psychological conditions of meaningfulness, safety, and availability. In this study, safety refers to psychological perceptions of safety and not workplace safety behaviors. The job features that were tested in this model included person-job fit, autonomy, co-worker relations, supervisor support, procedural justice, and interactional justice, while the personal characteristics consisted of self-consciousness, self-efficacy, extraversion, and neuroticism. Thirty-four hypotheses and a conceptual model were tested in order to establish the viability of this nomological net of work engagement in which it was expected that meaningfulness would mediate the relationships between job features and work engagement, safety would mediate the relationships that job features and personal characteristics have with work engagement, and availability (physical, emotional, and cognitive resources) would mediate the relationships that personal characteristics have with work engagement. Furthermore...

The relationship between clothing and the "androgynous gender" is structured according to sociology through social cognition and communication. Androgyny has been the subject of debate by long centuries as a form of liberation from socially pre-established patterns in Western culture. This release is often confused with other approaches than would be androgynous or hybrid. The individual characteristics of the "androgynous gender" was the starting point for the identification of existing signs on clothing and its relationship with the "androgynous gender". The aim of this work is to investigate the relationship of clothing and "androgynous gender 'in the fashion system in order to check the signs on the garment through the concepts of" androgynous gender". For this was carried out a questionnaire, including the "androgynous gender", to verify the extent to which their visual and stylistic characteristics are recognized. One of the main conclusions of this study is that clothing plays a major role in the classification of "Androgynous gender".; A relação entre o vestuário e o “género andrógino” está estruturado de acordo com a sociologia, através da cognição social e comunicação. A androginia tem sido alvo de debate ao longos dos séculos como uma forma de libertação dos padrões socialmente pré-estabelecidos na cultura ocidental. Essa libertação muitas vezes é confundida com outras abordagens do que seria o ser andrógino ou híbrido. As características individuais do “género andrógino” foi o ponto de partida para a identificação dos sinais existentes no vestuário e a sua relação com o “género andrógino”. O objectivo deste trabalho é investigar a relação do vestuário e do “género andrógino” no sistema de moda...

The performance of the piston ring-pack is directly associated with the friction, oil consumption, wear, and blow-by in internal combustion engines. Because of non-axisymmetric characteristics of the power cylinder system, the performance of a ring varies along its circumference. Investigating these variations is of great interest for developing advanced ring-packs, but is out of the capabilities of the existing two-dimensional models. In this work, three separate but closely related numerical models were developed to study the performance of the piston ring-pack. The model for static analysis was developed to facilitate the design of piston rings. In this model, a finite beam element model is adopted with incorporation of a physics-based sub-model describing the interaction between the ring and the bore as well as the ring and the groove. A step-by-step approach is adopted to calculate the ring/bore and ring/groove conformability if the free shape of the ring is given. A method that can be used to determine the free shape as to achieve a specific tension distribution is also developed. Model results revealed the complex ring/bore and ring/groove interaction. A three-dimensional model for ring dynamics and blow-by gas flow was developed to address non-axisymmetric characteristics of the power cylinder system. In this model...

Hepatocytes are widely used in the pharmaceutical and medical fields for drug metabolism studies, bioartificial liver devices, and repopulation of damaged livers as an alternative to transplantation. However, these cells are scarce and difficult to maintain in culture for prolonged periods of time. Banks of cryopreserved liver cells would significantly alleviate issues of hepatocyte availability, and efforts are being made to improve the viability and functionality of frozen hepatocytes. Previously, most work on improving post-thaw viability has hinged on limiting the physical damage of freezing by adding cryoprotective agents and optimizing cooling rates. Membrane-permeable cryoprotectants, such as dimethyl sulfoxide, though widely used, can be extremely toxic to the cell. More natural, non-membrane-permeable cryoprotectants, inspired by freeze-tolerant animals have also been used. A non-metabolizable glucose analog, 3-0-methyl- glucose (30MG), has shown promise with hepatocytes and was used in this study. Kinetics of the rGLUT2 cellular transporter used for 30MG uptake were quantified; Km and Vmax were determined to be 27.6 mM and 1.38 mM/s, respectively, by Lineweaver-Burk analysis and 70.0 mM and 1.82 mM/s, respectively, by Eadie-Hofstee analysis. This study also aimed to investigate the role of mitochondria in cell death induced by freezing. In particular...

Since the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, the commercialization of ideas generated in academia has driven significant startup activity and expansion in the life sciences. This commercial transformation has been shown by others to be concentrated among a relatively small number of elite academic institutions. However, within these institutions, we find that a small number of prestigious scientists are disproportionately responsible for entrepreneurial and commercial activity. To date, limited research has been conducted which aims to understand the characteristics of such serial scientist-entrepreneurs or their significance in early commercial ventures. This study identifies and characterizes 18 serial scientist-entrepreneurs (defined as faculty who have founded or served on the board of directors of 3 or more startups) on the basis of academic impact, patenting, and social network centrality, as compared to their first-time entrepreneur (i.e., faculty who founded or directed 1-2 companies) and noncommercial peers. These individuals constitute a subset of 66 scientist-entrepreneurs from a population of the 493 scientists who served as faculty in life sciences-related departments at MIT, during the period of 1981 to 2005 (representing the primary commercialization period for biotechnology).; (cont.) The thesis highlights three key findings. First...

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) can be compensated through the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act. We looked at the characteristics of WMSDs in worker's compensation records and the epidemiological investigation reports from the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute (OSHRI). Based on the records of compensation, the number of cases for WMSDs decreased from 4,532 in 2003 to 1,954 in 2007. However the proportion of WMSDs among the total approved occupational diseases increased from 49.6% in 2003 to 76.5% in 2007, and the total cost of WMSDs increased from 105.3 billion won in 2004 to 163.3 billion won in 2007. The approval rate of WMSDs by the OSHRI accounted for 65.6%. Ergonomic and clinical characteristics were associated with the approval rate; however, the degenerative changes had a minimal affect. This result was in discordance between OSHRI and the Korea Workers' Compensation & Welfare Service. We presumed that there were perceptional gaps in work-relatedness interpretation that resulted from the inequality of information in ergonomic analyses. We propose to introduce ergonomic analysis to unapproved WMSDs cases and discuss those results among experts that will be helpful to form a consensus among diverse groups.

Work is a subject matter that several psychological approaches share, each one driven by specific epistemological, theoretical, methodological and deontological assumptions. Generally speaking, the realm of Organizational and Work Psychology (OWP) involves three main focuses: cognitive, social and, more recently, clinical. This article, of a theoretical nature, attempts to outline the characteristics of work clinics. We analyze their main affiliations and theoretical roots, the assumptions made and shared by their representative approaches, and their main subjects of research and intervention. We conclude with a proposal to locate work clinics using as reference a broader paradigm analysis taking account of coexisting neo-positivist and comprehensive (non-positivist) OWP paradigms. We propose that locating them close to comprehensive paradigms may lead to certain stresses and challenges, with significant consequences for the actions of (clinics) work psychologists.; O trabalho é um objeto de estudo compartilhado por diversas abordagens da psicologia, cada qual orientada por pressupostos epistemológicos, teóricos, metodológicos e deontológicos específicos.

Estes resultados permitiram-nos concluir que as mesmas variáveis de contexto (moderadoras) têm um papel diferente na duração e frequência de absentismo.; This study intends to understand the factors which contribute to explain the absenteeism through the Job Demands and Resources Model. The objective of this research was to analyze the preferences of people who have signed up for adoption concerning characteristics of the prospective adopted child. The collected results confirm available literature data which point out that Brazilian candidates for adoption prefer newborn Caucasian girls. The findings also showed the occurrence of changes in the opinion about the preferences for determinate characteristics of the adoptive child during the waiting period before adoption, changes that, in general, occur in such an order as to widen the possibilities of adoption and decrease the waiting period. From this work it was possible to present perspectives of action for professionals who work with prospective adoptive parents, since, more than simply evaluation, the work with future adoptive parents should be towards preparation and guiding. Specifically, by providing support to the familial group, guiding with respect of the adoption process, and, mainly, creating and open environment for the discussion of taboos involved in adoption. Keywords: adoption; legal adoption; preferred characteristics of the prospective adoptive child. ; A pesquisa objetivou analisar preferências de pessoas cadastradas para adoção quanto às características da criança que pretendiam adotar. The winemaking industry produces large volumes of wastewater that pose an environmental threat if not treated correctly. The increasing numbers of wineries and the demand for wine around the world are adding to the growing problem. The vinification process includes all steps of the winemaking process, from the receipt of grapes to the final packaged product in the bottle. To fully understand all the aspects of winery wastewater it is important to know the winemaking processes before considering possible treatments. Winemaking is seen as an art and all wineries are individual, hence treatment solutions should be different. Furthermore, wastewater also differs from one winery to another regarding its volume and composition and therefore is it vital for a detailed characterisation of the wastewater to fully understand the problem before managing it. However, prevention is better than cure. There are a number of winemaking practices that can help lower the volume of the wastewater produced to decrease the work load of the treatment system and increase the efficiency of treatment.

The objective of this study was to examine job characteristics and home characteristics associated with negative and positive work-home interaction of employed South African females. A total of 500 females from six provinces in South Africa participated in the study. Multiple regression analyses were used to analyse the data. The results indicated that negative work-home interference (WHI) was best predicted by job demands (including pressure, overload and time demands) and a lack of job resources (including autonomy, supervisor support, instrumental support and role clarity). Three job resources predicted positive WHI, including autonomy, supervisor support and colleague support. Negative home-work interference (HWI) was best predicted by pressure and a lack of autonomy at home, while positive HWI was best predicted by the presence of home pressure, but with support at home.
