This paper discusses the immigrant's presence in Consolação Cemetery and in Brás Cemetery - two necropolises which have become open air museums. In these two cemeteries, intentionally or not, immigrant families had built - through sculptures, monuments, inscriptions, places - memories of historical experiences of São Paulo city in the turn from the 19th century to the 20th century. The constitution of these two cemeteries as well as their current condition, reveal the differences among diverse groups of immigrants. The research was conducted based on bibliographical records...

The analysis of oral pathologies is routinely a part of bioarchaeological and paleopathological investigations. Oral health, while certainly interesting by itself, is also potentially informative about general or systemic health. Numerous studies within modern populations have shown associations between oral pathologies and other diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and pulmonary infections. This paper addresses the question of how oral health was associated with general health in past populations by examining the relationship between two oral pathologies (periodontal disease and dental caries) and the risk of mortality in a cemetery sample from medieval England. The effects of periodontitis and dental caries on risk of death were assessed using a sample of 190 individuals from the St. Mary Graces, London cemetery dating to approximately A.D. 1350–1538. The results suggest that the oral pathologies are associated with elevated risks of mortality in the St. Mary Graces cemetery, such that individuals with periodontitis and dental caries were more likely to die than their peers without such pathologies. The results shown here suggest that these oral pathologies can be used as informative indicators of general health in past populations.

The burial of coffins may pose an environmental and health hazard since the metals that are used in coffin-making may corrode or degrade into harmful toxins. These may leach into the surrounding soils and groundwater. Very little research has been conducted world-wide on the mineral contamination potential of cemeteries, and virtually none in South Africa. The aim of the study is to determine whether burial practices affect the mineral content of soils in cemeteries. This was done by comparing the mineral concentrations of soils within the Zandfontein Cemetery in Tshwane (Gauteng, South Africa) to those off-site as well as those in zones with high burial loads with those zones with fewer burials. Twenty three soil samples were collected from various sites on- and off-site and analyzed for 31 minerals using ICP-AES. It was found that mineral concentrations of soils within the Zandfontein Cemetery were considerably higher than those off-site. Soil samples in multiple burials blocks also have elevated metal concentrations. These excess metals are probably of anthropogenic origin associated with burial practices and could pose an environmental and human health hazard. Strict monitoring of water quality in boreholes in the vicinity of the cemetery is recommended.

In 2005 to 2007 45 skeletons of adults and subadults were excavated at the Lombard period cemetery at Szólád (6th century A.D.), Hungary. Embedded into the well-recorded historical context, the article presents the results obtained by an integrative investigation including anthropological, molecular genetic and isotopic (δ15N, δ13C, 87Sr/86Sr) analyses. Skeletal stress markers as well as traces of interpersonal violence were found to occur frequently. The mitochondrial DNA profiles revealed a heterogeneous spectrum of lineages that belong to the haplogroups H, U, J, HV, T2, I, and K, which are common in present-day Europe and in the Near East, while N1a and N1b are today quite rare. Evidence of possible direct maternal kinship was identified in only three pairs of individuals. According to enamel strontium isotope ratios, at least 31% of the individuals died at a location other than their birthplace and/or had moved during childhood. Based on the peculiar 87Sr/86Sr ratio distribution between females, males, and subadults in comparison to local vegetation and soil samples, we propose a three-phase model of group movement. An initial patrilocal group with narrower male but wider female Sr isotope distribution settled at Szólád...

The potential for contamination of groundwater by cemetery activities in the city of Maceió, in this work, is evaluated through analysis of its physico-chemical and bacteriological quality. The cemeteries selected for this evaluation are located in medium vulnerability areas, in where groundwater level is near to the ground surface. Two cemiteries were chosen for the the research, Nossa Senhora Mãe do Povo and São José, located in the neighborhoods of Jaraguá and Trapiche, respectively. Besides the wells located within the cemiteries area another well, located upstream of Nossa Senhora Mãe do Povo Cemetery (background) was monitored. The physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics of groundwater have been modified by the use and occupation of land, by the local climate, the soil type and lack of sanitation. The microbiological analysis indicated pollution of fecal origin. The hygienic and sanitary conditions of the studied waters are not satisfactory, because the samples showed E. coli and / or total coliform. Clostridium perfringens were also detected (indicative of remote contamination), proteolytic bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria, suggesting contamination by the presence of organic matter in aquifers groundwater. It was observed the presence of proteolytic bacteria in the São Jose Cemetery groundwater...

This study evaluated the impact of necroleachate in the groundwater aquifer of some cemeteries located in towns around the federal district of Brasilia between 2007 and 2011. Cemeteries in Braslândia, Plano Piloto, Taguatinga, Gama, Sobradinho and Planaltina, located in the federal district, were studied including the Jardim Metropolitano (cemetery and crematorium) in Val Paraíso, Goias. Analysis of physico-chemical and microbiological parameters of underground water samples taken from monitored wells were carried out. The alkalinity, pH value, organic oxygen, conductivity, color, hardness, turbidity, iron content, total quantity of dissolved solid and the chemical and biological oxygen demand of a total of 342 samples were monitored. The result showed that the median values of the physico-chemical parameter obtained are within the range of those permitted by the law. However, it was observed that there was a sharp increase in the median concentration of organic oxygen parameters and the biological and chemical oxygen demand between 2007 and 2011. The results were be evaluated using the RDA (Redundancy analysis) model from the CANOCO software which does a canonical ordination and Redundancy analysis, serving as a chemical tool. The Redundancy analysis allowed for the identification of collection areas with the greatest amount of physico-chemical parameters...

The rural cemetery was a European creation first introduced in the nineteenth century. Relocated outside the commercial city sector the cemetery was promoted as a diversion to the confusion and complexity of urban life. Applying picturesque ideas to traditional burial grounds rural cemeteries became symbolic landscapes for the city and country. The aesthetic nature of its design became an inspiration and eventual model for North American cemeteries. As a cultural institution, the cemetery is constantly in flux. Centuries of interaction between society and the cemetery have resulted in substantial changes that have shaped the present landscape. Although traditionally in public-trust, cemeteries have become largely privatized, operated, managed and developed as businesses for-profit. The commercially-driven practices of these institutions have had significant impacts on the present cemetery landscape. Toronto’s Mount Pleasant Cemetery is a good example of a cemetery experiencing this extensive commercial restructuring. A review of pertinent literature outlined recent transformations within the cemetery landscape citing concerns over the emerging private-enterprise cemetery and its impacts on the burial landscape. My fieldwork examined site-transformations specific to Mount Pleasant through an in-depth analysis of the present cemetery landscape. Concepts of commercialization...

Today, cemeteries are forgotten places. Once centers of cities and the societies they served, they have been pushed to the outskirts and turned into places of pure storage, devoid of memory. This thesis takes on the additional program of the Potter's Field: a burial place for the poor and unclaimed. Currently in New York the potter's field is located on Hart Island in the Bronx. This thesis proposes replacing that cemetery. Located at Riverside Park, this thesis proposes that the cemetery can be re-inserted into the public realm. Issues such as privacy, scale, individuality, and memory are confronted. By siting the cemetery in a park, connections are made between the active world of the living, and the world of the dead and mourning. This is accomplished mainly within the architecture of the section. What results is a hybrid space that is both inside and outside the realm of the park and the city.; by Rori Christian Espina Dajao.; Thesis (M.Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2004.; Includes bibliographical references (p. 64-67).
