A study was designed to investigate the molecular epidemiology of extended-spectrum -lactamase (ESBL)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated in a centralized region over a 10 year period (200009). Molecular characterization was done using isoelectric focusing, PCR and sequencing for bla(CTX-M), bla(TEM) and bla(SHV) genes and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance determinants. Genetic relatedness was determined with PFGE using XbaI and multilocus sequencing typing. A total of 89 patients with incident infections were identified; the majority presented with hospital-onset urinary tract infections. The absolute number of ESBL-producing isolates remained very low until 2003, increased slightly in 2004, remained stable until 2008 and then in 2009 there was an abrupt increase in the numbers of ESBL producers identified. The majority of K. pneumoniae produced CTX-M-14 and -15, and have replaced SHV-12-producing isolates since 2005. We identified four different major sequence types (STs) among 32 of isolates (i.e. ST17, ST20, and the new ST573 and ST575) and provided insight into their clinical and molecular characteristics. The ST isolates were more likely to produce community-onset infections, were associated with bla(CTX-M) and emerged during the latter part of the study period. ST17 produced CTX-M-15 and SHV-12...

Diagnostic laboratory services in Alberta have been dramatically restructured over the past five years. In 1994, Alberta Health embarked on an aggressive laboratory restructuring that cut back approximately 30% of the overall monies previously paid to the laboratory service sector in Calgary. A unique service delivery model consolidated all institutional and community-based diagnostic testing in a company called Calgary Laboratory Services (CLS) in late 1996. CLS was formed by a public/private partnership between the Calgary Regional Health Care Authority (CRHA) and MDS-Kasper Laboratories. By virtue of its customer service base and scope of testing, CLS provides comprehensive regional laboratory services to the entire populace. Regional microbiology services within CLS have been successfully consolidated over the past three years into a centralized high volume laboratory (HVL). Because the HVL is not located in a hospital, rapid response laboratories (RRLs) are operated at each acute care site. Although the initial principle behind the proposed test menus for the RRLs was that only procedures requiring a clinical turnaround time of more than 2 h stay on-site, many other principles had to be used to develop and implement an efficient and clinically relevant RRL model for microbiology. From these guiding principles...

Increased travel leads to a heightened risk of imported infectious diseases. Patterns of immigration to countries like Canada have changed such that countries of malaria endemicity are frequented in larger numbers. In keeping with the changes in travel patterns and immigration, the major metropolitan city of Calgary has seen a dramatic rise in malaria incidence over the last decade. Fuelling this rise in Calgary has been the apparent complacence with prophylaxis in individuals visiting friends and relatives and potentially inadequate public health intervention in areas of the city with increased immigration and lower socioeconomic status.

This thesis aims to answer: (1) to what extent can oil prices and other economic indicators predict the changes in housing prices and rent in the Calgary single family housing market and (2) to determine what the lag time is between them. Implications of this study from a macro perspective are multiple. This study can be used as a simplified case study in isolating the effects of the boom and bust cycles of economic industries and quantify its impact to real estate performance. Results found an astonishing correlation. Oil prices, exchange rate, interest rate and employment levels can determine up to 98% of the changes in house prices and rents. Oil prices, representing economic viability of the city, affect the real estate industry with a lag of 7 quarters of approximately two years, while interest rates representing the financial well-being of the city affect house prices and rents with a lag of 2 1/2 years. Foreign exchange rate to the dollar, representing the relative global prosperity, affects real estate prices in one year. House prices seem to be equally sensitive to a positive or negative shock in oil prices, exchange rate, and interest rates. At which, $25/barrel oil price seems to be the "breakeven" level at which house prices remain stable...

Family is a natural group that, through the times, has developed interaction standards, that they constitute the familiar structure, that, in turn, governs the functioning of its members, delineating its gamma of behaviors and facilitating its interaction. In accordance with Wright; Leahey (2002) the nursing has the commitment to include the families in the cares of health. Many evidences exist that the family assumes one meaning special for well-being and the health of its members, thus the nurses must consider the family of the patients as integrant part of the unit of care. Front to the displayed one, immerges the necessity to evaluate and to intervine together to the family of the people during the process of hospitalization, independent of which is its alteration of health. We know that an evaluation model does not exist that contemplates all the phenomena of the family. However, the Wrights; Leahey (2002) cite the necessity of the adoption of a clear conceptual structure, or map of the family. This encourages the synthesis of data, in order to be identified to the forces and the problems of the family, constituting a plan of useful and systemize treatment. The Calgary model involves evaluation (MCAF) and Intervention (MCIF) in the Family and constitutes the multidimensional one structure that possesss three main categories: structural...

Enfin...

Corporate head offices serve as the figureheads and decision-making cores of firms. For a variety of reasons, these head offices tend to locate in major cities. Cities themselves compete to attract head offices for their presumed positive economic impact, but what is the impact? Calgary, Alberta, is Canada’s energy centre and an emerging leader in head office counts that is expected to further grow its share of Canadian corporate head offices. This report seeks to estimate the economic impact of an oil and gas (O&G) firm relocating to Calgary, AB. Based on decades of theory and using data from a variety of sources, two multipliers are calculated: the economic base multiplier and the H.C. Davis income multiplier. By applying these multipliers to data regarding head office employment and O&G industry wages, estimates of the employment and income effects of the relocation are found. The results emphasize the importance of both the O&G industry and attracting head offices to Calgary. Based on these conclusions, two key policy avenues are recommended to encourage further expansion of Calgary’s head office counts.

A clinical communication curriculum based on the principles of the Calgary-Cambridge approach was developed during the revision of the 5-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery program (BDS) at The University of Adelaide, Australia. To provide experiential learning opportunities, a simulated patient (SP) program using clinical scenarios was developed. We aimed to design the scenarios to reflect communication demands that student clinicians commonly encounter, that integrated process and content, and which students would perceive as authentic and relevant. Scenarios were based on data from focus groups with recent graduates and interviews with clinic tutors. The scenarios combined content (e.g. medical history) and process (e.g. questioning and relationship skills) at a level suitable for junior students. Students evaluated scenario-based materials and SP activities in a survey comprising Likert-scale and open-ended questions. Students rated the materials and SP activities positively; open-ended comments supported the ratings. Scenario-based materials and activities based on student-clinicians’ experiences, were perceived as relevant, realistic, and useful for learning. A curriculum designed on Calgary-Cambridge principles helped address student learning needs at particular stages of their program.; Vicki J. Skinner...

This research examines the factors that influence the emergence of cooperative municipal-First Nation relationships, and explores how these relationships can be sustained and built upon so that they are based on the principles of mutual recognition, mutual respect, sharing and mutual responsibility. Municipalities and First Nations are increasingly collaborating on land use planning, development, and services provision, and municipal officials, including planners, need to consider the role they can have in transforming organisational structures and land use planning practices in a way that will foster collaboration with First Nations. Strong relationships allow for mutually beneficial projects to be explored and undertaken, they reduce the chance for conflict and misunderstanding, and they play an important role in meaningful reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples This research utilizes a case study of the City of Calgary and the Tsuut’ina Nation to examine municipal-First Nation cooperation, and centres on how the relationship between the two communities evolved during negotiations to construct the southwest Calgary ring road through Nation land. Document review, policy analysis, and semi-structured interviews were used to determine the factors that encouraged the emergence of a cooperative relationship between the two neighbours. The research points to the importance of visionary community leadership in building trust and respect between First Nations and local governments...

A blood survey for the prevalence of the microfilariae of the canine heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis was conducted in the Calgary area of southern Alberta between November 1977 and August 1979. A total of 514 blood samples was examined by the modified Knott's test. All of the samples were negative for D. immitis microfilariae. Wright's stained blood smears taken from 19 animals at the Calgary Zoo also proved negative. One smear from a male two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) contained sheathless microfilariae which were distinguishable from those of D. immitis. These results, as well as mail survey data indicate that D. immitis is not endemic in the Calgary area.

This article describes risk factors for domestic and collective violence against women...

The study objective was to assess the family structure, functioning and development based on the emergence of a chronic condition. Qualitative study, developed in two families that were monitored through a community service project. The Calgary Model of Family Assessment was applied, which proposes the use of three analysis categories: structural, developmental and functional, besides the genogram and ecomap. One family is nuclear and the other consists of a single individual. Through the application of the model, the differences in family support for the chronic condition and the coping of the individual without family could be identified. Aging poses challenges that need to be experienced and, for elderly people living along, these confrontations are aggravated by the fact that they are deprived of any company.; El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la estructura, la funcionalidad y el desarrollo de la familia, considerando el aparecimiento de la condición crónica.
