This research aimed at investigating the cultural aspects of an ecovillage: its routine activities...

Abstract Three violent eighteenth-century storms that ravaged the North Sea area (1703), western central Europe (1739) and Portugal (1739) are investigated from the point of view of their meteorological setting, their socio-economic impact, and whether and by what means they secured an enduring place in the cultural memory. The evidence draws on individual narrative sources such as chronicles and poems, and institutional sources such as ship’s logbooks and state-organised ‘windthrow’ inventories of tree loss. Each of the three storms had socio-economic impacts that could be described as ‘war-like’ in the damage caused to buildings and the destruction of forests. The “Great Storm” of December 1703 jeopardized English naval supremacy in the War of the Spanish Succession by sinking a number of Royal Navy ships and taking the life of more than 8000 seamen. In January 1739 two similarly destructive storms swept over mainland Europe. The cultural memory of the three events here considered was however strikingly different. The sequence of storms in January 1739 though being the most protracted of the last centuries, and well-chroniceled, did not persist in the collective memories of those in France, Switzerland and elsewhere who experienced them. Likewise...

Evolutionary models of cultural change have acquired an important role in attempts to explain the course of human evolution, especially our specialization in knowledge-gathering and intelligent control of environments. In both biological and cultural change, different patterns of explanation become relevant at different ‘grains’ of analysis and in contexts associated with different explanatory targets. Existing treatments of the evolutionary approach to culture, both positive and negative, underestimate the importance of these distinctions. Close attention to grain of analysis motivates distinctions between three possible modes of cultural evolution, each associated with different empirical assumptions and explanatory roles.

We present a framework for a pragmatic science of cultural evolution. It is now possible for behavioral science to systematically influence the further evolution of cultural practices. As this science develops, it may become possible to prevent many of the problems affecting human wellbeing. By cultural practices, we refer to everything that humans do, above and beyond instinctual or unconditioned behaviors: not only art and literature, but also agriculture, manufacturing, recreation, war making, childrearing, science—everything. We can analyze cultural practices usefully in terms of the incidence and prevalence of individual behavior and group and organization actions. An effective science of intentional cultural evolution must guide efforts to influence the incidence and prevalence of individuals’ behaviors and the actions of groups and organizations. In this paper, we briefly sketch advances in scientific understanding of the influences on individual behavior. Then we describe principles that could guide efforts to influence groups and organizations. Finally, we discuss legitimate concerns about the use and misuse of a science for intentional cultural change.

Taking the case of lone parenthood, the paper examines an argument that has exerted extraordinary influence on recent policymaking, and finds that it is probably correct. The argument holds that limiting cash benefits for lone parents, and strengthening their communities, will discourage lone parenthood in two ways: directly, by raising the proce of lone parenthood, and indirectly, by making norms against lone parenthood more harsh. The norm effect is often held to be more important than the proce effect. Using a simple model of policy and endogenous social norms, however, this paper shows that cutting welfare and empowering communities makes norms more tolerant, not less. The reason is simple: both policies lower the net benefit of having a harsh norm against lone parenthood. Cutting welfare lowers the anti-tax benefit of such a norm, while stregthening communities increases its enforcement cost. Everyone desires softer norms; competition among cultural leaders forces them to call for tolerance. The tolerance effect can be strong enough to overwhelm the price effects, so that lone parenthood can increase rather than decrease. In its methods, the paper contributes a new approach to predicting short-run cultural change. Culture is a coordination problem...

This thesis focuses on the change of the concept of asylum through the incorporation of the gender concept and its impact on the application process of asylum and the granting of status refugee for victims of gender violence in Canada. From a diachronic perspective on the transmutations of asylum and of social and cultural transformations of this social phenomenon...

This paper brings together sociological theories of culture and gender to answer the question – how do large-scale development interventions induce cultural change? Through three years of ethnographic work in rural Bihar, the authors examine this question in the context of Jeevika, a World Bank-assisted poverty alleviation project targeted at women, and find support for an integrative view of culture. The paper argues that Jeevika created new “cultural configurations” by giving economically and socially disadvantaged women access to a well-defined network of people and new systems of knowledge, which changed women’s habitus and broke down normative restrictions constitutive of the symbolic boundary of gender.

The subject matter of this thesis spans the disciplines of Geography, Prehistory and Anthropology in attempting to examine the interaction of environmental and socio-cultural systems. The thesis is not meant to be primarily be an in-depth study of the evolution of the Gippsland Lakes system but is concerned with the question of the nature of the interaction of a small-scale society with its environment and how this is reflected in the cultural forms of the society. That is, rather than being the focus of the study, reconstruction of changes in the environmental parameters of the field area over time is undertaken to support the primary inquiry into the nature of environmental-cultural interaction. The goal of the study is therefore to examine cultural process rather than sedimentary processes. This empirical approach tests the correlation between the evolving landscape and the archaeological and ethnographic cultures of the Quaternary barrier systems of the Gippsland Lakes-Ninety Mile Beach region. This involves environmental reconstruction largely using published geomorphological and palynological information, and extensive archaeological site survey and analysis to develop an outline of the prehistory of the study area. Ethnographic and ethnohistoric reconstruction of aspects of the historical sociocultural organisation of the area are undertaken in order to provide a comparative base for archaeologically reconstructed culture. The study identifies a number of problems with the use of the rich ethnography of the area. Use of information hinges upon its validity and reliability. For these reasons sources of bias...

Thesis (PhD) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2005; The study of the education of minority and majority groups in pluralistic societies is important for understanding the processes of social and cultural change that are occurring in a culturally, economically, politically, and environmentally interdependent world. A small and unique window, this study provides a view of how a particular intercultural peace curricula effort at a U.S. Midwestern high school facilitated modest social change in a local context. This critical qualitative study engaged seven teacher inquirers in a curricula change effort. Specifically, this ethnographic action research project clarified the attitudinal and structural factors that impeded and/or facilitated an intercultural peace curricula development project--a project that responded to the current multicultural needs of a traditionally mono-cultural Indiana high school. This study ascertained the constraints and possibilities of intercultural peacebuilding opportunities within layers of educational policy contexts, organizational culture/s, and cultural meanings ascribed by both individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds at Junction High School. The findings indicate that constraints on teacher time...

In this paper, I present a theoretical reflection of modern mass tourism from an anthropological viewpoint. My intention here is to outline a methodological proposal for the analysis of the effect of tourism, recovering and articulating some classical concepts of the American anthropological heritage, suitably updated. Such concepts include acculturation, cultural change and diffusion, applied to the specific problems of mass tourism and its effects. Moreover, I also examine the methodological appropriateness of applying an ethno-historical approach in the study of the processes of socio-cultural changes brought about by tourism.

Indigenous peoples across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) already perceive and experience negative effects of climate change and variability. Although the overall economic impact of climate change on gross domestic product (GDP) is significant, what is particularly problematic is that it falls disproportionately on the poor including indigenous peoples, who constitute about 6.5 percent of the population in the region and are among its poorest and most vulnerable (Hall and Patrinos 2006). This book examines the social implications of climate change and climatic variability for indigenous communities in LAC and the options for improving their resilience and adaptability to these phenomena. By social implications, the authors mean direct and indirect effects in the broad sense of the word social, including factors contributing to human well-being, health, livelihoods, human agency, social organization, and social justice. This book, much of which relies on new empirical research, addresses specifically the situation of indigenous communities because our research showed them to be among the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. A companion book (Verner 2010) provides information on the broader social dimensions of climate change in LAC and on policy options for addressing them. This book will help to place these impacts higher on the climate-change agenda and guide efforts to enhance indigenous peoples' rights and opportunities...

The main focus of this study - the Global Environmental Survey (GOES) - is the impact of cultural influences on environmental attitudes. GOES examines the cultural impact from a basic cross-national perspective, investigating the impact of cultural change and value shifts on environmental concern, attitudes, and behavior in both Western and non-Western societies. This study provides cross-national insights in how mass publics and decision makers in both developed and developing countries frame environmental problems and solutions. In addition, the project has shown how leading environmental decision makers and opinion leaders assess the environmental beliefs and attitudes of the public. Apparently, citizens are not yet ready to translate pro-environmental concerns into acceptance of far-reaching environmental policy measures. Citizens in both developed and developing countries seem to prefer voluntary lifestyle changes. Moving from environmental concern via policy support to actual (reported) environmental behavior, we can conclude that persistent pro-environmental behavior does not describe citizens' environmental involvement and commitment. Our data indicate that environmentally relevant behaviors (e.g., transportation, energy use...

In this article the cultural change in a Brazilian metallurgic plant is analyzed. One observes that the introduction of Total Quality Management Program implies in the construction of a new world. This new world presents new evidences but too new forms to operationalise some old evidences.
