The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate existing knowledge and the use of communication strategies in emotional care for patients receiving palliative care in Brazil. It was performed from August, 2008, to July, 2009, with 303 health professionals who worked or had frequent contact with patients receiving palliative care, using a questionnaire. Data was submitted to descriptive and analytical statistical treatment. The professionals reported not knowing about communication strategies, showing a significant difference (p-value 0.0011) in comparing subjects with and without previous training in palliative care, showing that those who had received proper training know/use more communication strategies when providing care for their patients on an emotional level. The strategies most often cited were: careful listening, verbal reaffirmation of care, using open questions, and affective touch. We conclude that there is little knowledge and poor use of communication strategies among health professionals in towards the emotional care of patients receiving palliative care.

The objective of this study is to verify the relevance and utilization of communication strategies in palliative care. This is a multicenter qualitative study using a questionnaire, performed from August of 2008 to July of 2009 with 303 health care professionals who worked with patients receiving palliative care. Data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. Most participants (57.7%) were unable to state at least one verbal communication strategy, and only 15.2% were able to describe five signs or non-verbal communication strategies. The verbal strategies most commonly mentioned were those related to answering questions about the disease/treatment. Among the non-verbal strategies used, the most common were affective touch, looking, smiling, physical proximity, and careful listening. Though professionals have assigned a high degree of importance to communication in palliative care, they showed poor knowledge regarding communication strategies. Final considerations include the necessity of training professionals to communicate effectively in palliative care.

This is an exploratory, cross-sectional study of quantitative design that aimed to identify the communication strategies used and reported by the nursing staff in the care of aphasic patients after a stroke. The techniques used were the participant observation and interviews with 27 subjects of the nursing staff of neurological units in a general hospital. The most frequently mentioned strategies were gestures (100%), verbal communication (33.3%), written communication (29.6%) and the touch (18.5 %). Among the observed strategies, the gestures reached 40.7% and the touch was present in all situations, given its instrumental character essential to care. The findings show lack of knowledge of nonverbal, proxemics , kinesics and tacesics communication. No significant differences were observed among the professional categories depending on the length of experience with respect to the strategies reported by members of the nursing staff in the care for aphasic patients.

Factors influencing access to health care among people with disabilities (PWD) include: attitudes of health care providers and the public, physical barriers, miscommunication, income level, ethnic/minority status, insurance coverage, and lack of information tailored to PWD. Reducing health care disparities in a population with complex needs requires implementation at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. This review article discusses common barriers to health care access from the patient and provider perspective, particularly focusing on communication barriers and how to address and ameliorate them. Articles utilized in this review were published from 2005 to present in MEDLINE and CINAHL and written in English that focused on people with disabilities. Topics searched for in the literature include: disparities and health outcomes, health care dissatisfaction, patient-provider communication and access issues. Ineffective communication has significant impacts for PWD. They frequently believe that providers are not interested in, or sensitive to their particular needs and are less likely to seek care or to follow up with recommendations. Various strategies for successful improvement of health outcomes for PWD were identified including changing the way health care professionals are educated regarding disabilities...

This is a case study which sought to identify and understand the use of communication strategies in the context of an English classroom in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. The interactions among four (4) students of the seventh semester of an English course were observed. The research instruments used in this study were recordings in audio and video and field notes made by the researcher. In addition to this, a sociocultural questionnaire was applied in order to gather more information about the participants. For the data analysis, Tarone‟s taxonomy of communication strategies (1983) was used, which divides the strategies into three (3) main categories (paraphrase, borrowing and avoidance) and nine (9) subcategories (paraphrase: approximation, word coinage and circumlocution; borrowing: literal translation, language switch, appeal for assistance and mime; avoidance: topic avoidance and message abandonment). After identifying and categorizing these strategies found in the data, I analyzed them, observed the interactions in which they appeared and the way they were used. Also, some discussions about relevant issues related to the strategy use were raised, such as: the use of mother tongue in the L2 learning, the way the communicative approach has been understood in the language classrooms...

Many communication practitioners and development workers face obstacles and challenges in their practical work. A participatory communication strategy offers a very specific perspective on how to articulate social processes, decision-making processes, and any change process for that matter. Participatory approaches are nothing new. However, what is new is the proliferation of institutions, especially governmental but also nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that seek participatory approaches in their development initiative. This guide concerns to provide perspectives, tools and experiences regarding how to go about it with participatory communication strategies. It is conceived as a guide to be of relevance and utility for development workers in the field. It is targeted at both at government and their officials, the World Bank staff, and at civil society. The particular relevance of this guide is three-fold: 1) placing the practitioner debate about participatory communication within a conceptual framework...

The UN Millennium Development Goals call for not only greater financial commitment in international assistance programs but also innovative strategies to tackle the serious economic, health, education, and other basic human rights problems in the developing world. This paper is organized as follows: Chapter 2 is an overview of key theoretical models of development communication. Chapter 3 describes the characteristic patterns of recent empirical studies in development communication in terms of theoretical models and types of communication strategies. Chapter 4 presents some outstanding evidence of the impacts of communication on development initiatives. Chapter 5 discusses weak spots in the evidence. The concluding chapter will make suggestions for further research by drawing attention to the theoretical, methodological and empirical gaps in the existing academic research in development communication.

This article discusses the teachability of communication strategies in the EFL classroom. As well as reflecting on the nature of speech production in the mother tongue, it looks at some of the difficulties encountered when speaking in a foreign language and the inherent difficulties in ‘teaching’ speaking as a skill. It focuses on different types of communication strategies and possible approaches that can be used in the classroom to raise students’ awareness of these strategies and develop their strategic competence through the implementation and practice of the language. Reference is made throughout to practical classroom activities which will enable students to develop their strategic competence and become more confident at communicating in English.

This dissertation analyzes patterns of communication strategy usage in the speech of 41 French immersion students in Toronto, Canada collected from informal student interviews with a native French speaker. The study contributes to a more complete understanding of communication strategies in French immersion by addressing such issues as the relative range and frequency of strategies; the interplay between strategies; the interaction between participants related to strategy usage; and the effect of extralinguistic factors on strategy usage (e.g. students' sex; age/grade; French language media exposure; time in a Francophone environment; stays with a Francophone family; home language). Strategies were coded and frequency counts obtained. The strategies identified included: L1-based (language switch and foreignization); L2-based (circumlocution, word coinage and approximation); sociopragmatic (appeal for assistance, message abandonment, and mime); and ambiguous/potentially L3-based strategies. While students use a range of strategies, the tendency is to rely on language switch. Rather than risk inaccuracy in the TL, students prefer to be economical and, assuming that the interviewer is bilingual, are confident that she will understand the strategy. Appeals for assistance from the interviewer are also frequent...

Introduction: Child farm safety has been identified as a key public health concern in Australia. To date, communication strategies for child farm safety have primarily targeted rural based adults as custodians of children, and because the greatest proportion of deaths occur in pre-school children. However, emerging international literature acknowledges the importance of understanding the perceptions and practices of children and adolescents as active agents for identifying and preventing hazard risks and accidents. This qualitative exploratory study examined how rural students aged 7-12 years read farm safety messages in printed farm safety communication tools, developed predominantly by Farmsafe Australia and Farmsafe Queensland. The study also identifies students’ ideas to improve communication tools. Methods: Seventeen focus groups were conducted in rural-based schools in a number of commodity regions across Australia. There was an average of eight students in each of these focus groups. The sample included children aged between 7 and 12 years. Focus groups were generally split into two age cohorts: 7-9 years (seven focus groups) and 10-12 years (eight focus groups). Two focus groups were conducted with students in a composite age range of 7-12 years...

It lagged behind an intense newsabilityabout health pOlicies initiated by that Minister, prolix in declarations to the media. His successor embraced a more sober style. Health policies didn'tchange much, but the news items wrote about them were drastically different In June 21 st 2011, the government team changed and a new Health Minister was sworn - Paulo Macedo - who, like his predecessor, became known for releasing moderate statements to the media, although several profound reforms in the health sector were to be expected. In this paper we want to analyse how those Mini5ters managed their relation with the media during their governments, and to understand their communication strategies and the journalists' reaction to them. We gathered every news article that mentioned health policies and was published between2008 and 2011 in three generic newspapers: a daily quality newspaper (Publico), a daily popular newspaper (Jornal de Noticias) ...

This study investigated the relationship between communication strategies use and foreign language (L2) oral production. Thirty participants were assigned to a pre-intermediate, an intermediate or an advanced group. Their oral fluency was assessed by means of speech rate (Lennon, 1990). L2 speech production was elicited by means of three narrative tasks in three different sessions. Data analysis revealed that the relationship between communication strategies use and L2 oral fluency, as measured by speech rate, is not statistically significant in any of the three proficiency levels. The analysis also revealed that speech rate, alone, is not enough to examine the relationship between communication strategies use and L2 speech production. To explain the few instances of significant statistical correlations between speech rate and types of communication strategies, it is suggested that due to the multitude of factors affecting L2 oral fluency, other aspects of speech production need to be taken into consideration. In addition, the nature of tasks and their cognitive demands might have contributed to learners' apparently limited oral improvement across sessions.

This paper focuses on one criterial aspect of learner autonomy generally referred to as 'learner training'. More specifically, the aim of the paper is to review both the proposals suggesting a beneficial effect of training learners in the use of one specific group of language- use strategies known as Communication Strategies (CS), and the suggestions concerning how to implement such training. As a broader aim, the paper presents an assessment of the proposals previously reviewed in the light of the research on learner training in second language acquisition contexts.

Palliative care is a comprehensive care field served by a multidisciplinary team. Communication is an essential tool for this approach. Through it an adequate control of symptoms, as well as individualized and quality care can be offered, so that conflicts and anxieties can be solved and autonomy preserved. The proposed objective was to identify communication strategies used in Brazil for patients in palliative care. An integrative review was developed wherein articles were located in four databases and a portal of theses in the period from 2009 to 2014. The articles relevant to the topic totaled 19, from which 16 were used. The results showed that the most frequently cited strategies were active listening, therapeutic silence, and affective touch, hearing, and empathy. However, even though recognized by the literature, the use of this method is still rare, and professionals need emerging training in the palliative approach.; RESUMO Os cuidados paliativos expressam um campo de cuidados integrais realizado por uma equipe multidisciplinar.
