Dentistry, as a science and field of knowledge, has presented a substantial development in the last decades in the areas of research and education. The aim of this study was to evaluate the Brazilian scientific production in Dentistry, as from their methodological outlining, which characterizes the XXI Century. Five thousand two hundred and three study abstracts were evaluated, comprising works presented in the meetings of the Brazilian Society of Dentistry Research (SBPqO), during the period of 2001 to 2006. The main results identify that, as for the methodology used in the researches, there was a predominance of the studies of an individuate, interventionist and longitudinal nature; of the researches in the areas of Dentistry, Periodontology, Endodontics, Pedodontics and Collective Oral Health and experimental studies about clinical researches or with collective subjects. The inter and multidisciplinarity are pointed out in the outlining of this study, as the triad Education-Health-Research is discussed, so that they transcend in their fields of action, in the direction of the transdisciplinarity. It is concluded that, in the studied period, there was a reasonable and balanced production in Brazilian dental field; A Odontologia, como ciência e campo do saber...

The objective of this study was to evaluate a baby dentistry program which has been in the city of Natal for five years. The research was based on two analysis: a quantitative one, which tried to check caries prevalence in 52 children supported by the program and a qualitative one, which, through interviews carried out with the mothers, using the focus group technique, tried to realize the effect of the program their attitudes related to the care of their children´s oral health. For the quantitative analyses of caries prevalence there was the use of def-s and knutson rates and the values obtained were shown in a descritive and analytical way.The results showed that 4.2% of babies ranging 24 to 36 months old presented carie disease. Children from 36 to 48 months old and above 48 months old presented 18.2% and 16.7% carie prevalence respectively. The def-s averages found in ages 24 to 36, 36 to 48 and 48 to 60 months old were 0.08; 0.40 and 1.16 respectively, considered as being equally low, going along with Knutson rates. The qualitative analyses showed a high level of the mothers` satisfaction, considering the access,practitioner-patient relationship and opportunity to keep the oral health. Children supported by the program showed a low carie prevalence and the program turned out to be effective under the mothers` point of view; O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar um programa de odontologia para bebês em funcionamento há cinco anos na cidade do Natal. The management of a child s behavior in a dental setting is routinely accomplished by a good communicative technique known as basic methods. Advanced me thods (protective stabilization, sedation, and general anesthesia) have been indicated for resistant children. When the basics methods are not enough to provide a safe and effective treatment, Brazilian dentists seem to prefer the protective stabilization to restrain a child. After the establishment of rules for nitrous oxide sedation in Brazil, a change in practice can be expected. In minimal and moderate sedation, patient can respond to every dental treatment s stimulus with cry and struggle. The purpose of this study was to known the perceptions of sedation by accompanying adults and a sedation team. This was a qualitative research, based on three in-depth interviews with two groups of accompanying adults groups and one group of a dental sedation team. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and independently analyzed by three investigators through the thematic content method. The first analysis explored the ACCOMPANYING ADULTS SATISFACTION; two categories emerged: the good side (conscious, safety, satisfaction, behavior management) and the bad side (suffering, adverse effects) of pediatric dental sedation. The second analysis regarding the MEANINGS OF SEDATIONFOR ACCOMPANYING ADULTS generated FOUR categories: Protective stabilization (to bind...

The use of orthodontic devices has been associated with an increase in dental biofilm retention. In this study, the effect of hydrophobic coatings, based on (fluorinated or not) organo-silanes, on the reduction of the contact angle and early biofilm retention in orthodontic devices was tested. Two different types of hydrophobic were tested: hydrophobic solution 1 (SH1), obtained by dilution of 2.5% of hexadecyl-triethoxy-silane in ethanol, and hydrophobic solution 2 (SH2), composed of 2.5% of perfluorodecyl-triethoxy-silane diluted in dimethyl sulfoxide. The solutions were applied in ceramic and stainless steel substrates and, via sol-gel process and crosslinking, siloxane networks were formed on the surface of the devices. The effect of the coatings was evaluated in two stages. In the first stage, aiming the characterization of the surface, the water contact angle was analyzed. Stainless steel and polycrystalline alumina plates were prepared, previously applying or not alumina sandblasting as surface treatment. A significant increase in contact angle was observed with the application of both hydrophobic solutions in both substrates, with the sandblasting allowing formation of super-hydrophobic surface in the ceramic substrate (contact angle up to 155o)...

Micro-organisms belonging to the resident oral microflora are organized into complex communities, the biofilms, and are the direct cause of the caries process. It is necessary to understand the degree to which biofilm physicochemical and nutrient environments affect the plaque development in individuals differing in their oral environments. In this context, microcosm biofilm models could be used to answer specific questions related to caries. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that microcosm biofilms growth from inoculums of caries free children (CF), childrenwith early childhood caries (ECC) and with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) would provide the same cariogenic response under regular sucrose exposure. Also, microcosm biofilms formed from saliva of children and their mothers considering cariogenic response and microbiota composition were compared. Three children of each group were selected: CF, ECC and S-ECC and their mothers. The mother-child pairs were examined and the dental status was recorded. Saliva samples were collected and screened for microbial composition. Microcosm plaque biofilms were initiated from saliva, growth on bovine enamel discs in artificial saliva enriched with mucin (DMM) for up to 10 days in 24-well microplates under anaerobic conditions. Biofilms were growth with and without sucrose under a semi-dynamic regimen previously tested. DMM was replaced daily and pH measurements were recorded for DMM with sucrose or DMM without sucrose supernatants. On the 10th day...

Maintaining the integrity and function of primary dentition is one of the main purposes of pediatric dentistry. Bacteria and their products are responsible for the development of endodontic pathologies in primary teeth. This study aimed to identify the presence of specific anaerobic bacteria in infected pulp chambers (PC) and root canals (RC) of necrotic primary teeth by the PCR method and to make an in vivo comparison of the effectiveness between two molar tooth endodontic instrumentation techniques manual and rotary with reference to the time instrumentation and the time to perform the filling. The study consisted in the microbial investigation of primary teeth with pulp necrosis of 15 patients. Samples were collected by using cotton balls (PC) and sterile absorbent paper points (RC). Bacterial DNA was extracted by means of DNA extraction kits. After DNA extraction, PCR reaction was performed through the use of specific primers to detect the occurrence of the following microorganisms: Filifactor alocis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Parvimonas micra, Porphyromonas endodontalis, P. gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, P. nigrescens, P. tannerae, Tanerella forsythia, Treponema denticola and T. socranskii. PCR products were analized by 1% agarose gel stained by red gel and viewed under ultraviolet transillumination. To compare instrumentation techniques...

Knowing the occlusal characteristics of deciduous and mixed dentition, its development, changes and possible influencing factors is important for prevention and interception of malocclusion, being it of great epidemiological value. For this, longitudinal studies are appropriate because they observe the same population in different time points. This study consisted of two parts: cross-sectional and longitudinal study. The cross-sectional study investigated the influence of demographic, behavioral and socioeconomic factors at time breastfeeding of the child and the influence of the same in occlusal characteristics of primary dentition. It was found that the statistically significant factors for breastfeeding were time use of baby bottle (p<0.001) and time-use of pacifier (p<0.001), moreover, in relation to dental occlusion were associated the relation of canines (p=0.002), the midline deviation (p=0.013), anterior open bite (p<0.000), overjet (p<0.001), posterior crossbite (p=0.006) and presence of malocclusion (p<0.001). The longitudinal study compared occlusal characteristics present in children in primary dentition and mixed dentition, six years after. Advanced methods of behavior management, such as passive restraint, sedation and general anesthesia, have been proposed for this attendance. In literature, the effectiveness of these techniques is similar, but the acceptance of each of the methods by parents is varied, being necessary to obtain written consent before the application of this technique indicated. Based on these observations, this study aimed to understand the mothers' perceptions about the advanced techniques of behavior management used in pediatric dentistry and how mothers behave before the randomization process when it comes to the method of driving behavior to be applied to your child's dental rehabilitation. This qualitative research, we interviewed mothers of children under three years of age who would receive dental treatment under one of the techniques, using a semi-structured and voice recording. After interviews, they were transcribed in Microsoft Word file. We conducted its analysis by content analysis, after carefully reading the files. Among concerns of mothers were created four technical thematic categories: "prior knowledge of protective stabilization...

Since Demirjian's system of estimating dental maturity was first described, many researchers from different countries have tested its accuracy among diverse populations. Some of these studies have pointed out a need to determine population-specific standards. In Brazil, the Northeast region is the one that most suffers the negative impact of exodus, specially related to the increase of abandoned children in the cities. The aim of this study was to test the accuracy of Demirjian's system for assessing the dental maturity of northeastern Brazilian children, so as to present a scale for maturity score conversion into dental age developed specifically for this population. This could be used for forensic, anthropological and legal matters, and also as a model for other countries attempting to formulate their own conversion scales. Panoramic radiographs of 1,491 children (821 females and 670 males), aged 7 to 13 years, from Ceará state, northeast Brazil, were assessed by a single observer to determine dental age (DA) according to Demirjian's system. The mean percentage of intra-observer agreement was 86.6%, with a mean Cohen's Kappa coefficient of 0.67 (substantial agreement). The DA was compared by paired t-test to subjects' chronological age (CA). The differences between CA and DA in all age groups were statistically significant (p<0.0001)...
