In the last decades with the advance of the scientific and technological development, Biology is becoming the base for the sprouting of these new processes. The dilemma that involve the subjects of Bioethics such as: abortion, euthanasia, genetics, trunk cells , research involving human beings and animal and public health, always leave of the biological knowledge. Being thus, this study it has as objective, to identify if the ethical aspects of the subjects that the Bioethics studies, they are argued in the course of graduation degree in Biology at UFAL. The methodology mention the research focus on of qualitative nature, being used the case study as methodological boarding. The data had been gotten through closed questionnaires applied to the professors and the students of the last year of the 2005 group, of the Biological course of Sciences at UFAL. The analysis of the data discloses, that a convergence for the most complex subjects of the ethical point of view and that exists exactly thus, the ethical aspect is not argued in classroom. In this way, the importance of the promotion of the debates of the subjects is verified that the Bioethics studies inside of the classroom, so that, this way it comes to contribute for the moral development and the ethical formation of the future professors of the course of Biological Sciences at UFAL.; Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Alagoas; Nas últimas décadas com o avanço do desenvolvimento científico e tecnológico...

Toxoplasmosis, a benign disease in normal healthy individuals, can have serious effects in pregnant women and immunocompromised patients. It is a parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii (Tg), an obligatory intracellular protozoan. The prophylactic and therapeutic arsenal against this parasite is very restricted. Thus, there is an ongoing search for novel drugs and therapeutic strategies. A promising alternative is a rational approach using medicinal plants. This study aimed to standardize methodologies for assessing the toxicological, antiproliferative, antioxidant, antiinflammatory and anti-Toxoplasma effects of Estragole and Thymol compounds isolated from species of plants (Lippia sidoides and Croton zenhtneri) commonly used in the Cariri region of Ceara State, Brazil. First we evaluated in vivo toxicity and conducted a pathological analysis of mice livers. In vivo antiinflammatory activity was assessed using air pouch and paw edema methods. Cytotoxicity assays were performed and antiproliferative, antioxidant and nitric oxide production analyzed. Anti-Toxoplasma activity was evaluated in a congenital experimental model with varying stages of maternal infection using the ME-49 strain and a non- congenital model by using ME-49 and RH strains. The results suggest low to moderate toxicity for both compounds. Thymol was more toxic in vivo and in vitro...

Seaweeds are organisms known to exhibit a variety of biomolecules with pharmacological properties. The coast of Rio Grande do Norte has over 100 species of seaweeds, most of them not yet explored for their pharmacological potential. Sugars and phenolic compounds are the most studied of these being assigned a range of biological properties, such as anticoagulant , antiinflammatory, antitumor and antioxidant activities. In this work, we obtained methanolic extracts from thirteen seaweeds of the coast of Rio Grande do Norte (Dictyota cervicornis; Dictiopterys delicatula; Dictyota menstruallis; D. mertensis; Sargassum filipendula; Spatoglossum schröederi; Acanthophora specifera; Botryocladia occidentalis; Caulerpa cupresoides; C. racemosa; C. prolifera; C. sertularioides e Codium isthmocladum). They were evaluated as anticoagulant and antioxidant drugs, as well as antiproliferative drugs against the tumor cell line HeLa. None of the methanolic extracts showed anticoagulant activity, but when they were evaluated as antioxidant drugs all of extracts showed antioxidant activity in all tests performed (total antioxidant capacity, sequestration of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals, ferric chelation and reductase activity), especially the algae D. mentrualis...

In contemporary society, distance education is expanding, especially in the offering of courses of initiatory professor training. By the side of possibilities, there is the need to critically reflect on the government decision to finance, and even to incite distance education, as a more economic way to achieve, within different time and space, the greatest quantity of the population, trying to fill the gaps of the Brazilian school education. The research was made in the Biology Bachelor Course offered by the Pernambuco University (UPE), in the context of the Presential Support Pole of the Paraiba State University, located in the city of Campina Grande. Along this study, we intend to analyze the evaluation practice and the instruments of valuation available in the virtual environment of learning (AVA), used by the former professors in the learning evaluation of the contents offered by the reference course. The relevance of the discussion is to reflect about the results of distance education in the initial of the professor training. To perceive the possibilities and limitations concerning the technological resources available at the educational process, especially to the evaluation practice, is primordial in order to comprehend the contents of learning that can be explored by the professors and which is the dialogical relation that is firmed between professor...

Understanding the historical and ecological relationships which are influent in current biological diversity is one of the most challenging tasks of evolutionary biology. Recent systematics emphasizes the need of integrative approaches to delimit different lineages and species. The northeastern Brazil, mostly placed in Caatinga biome, is characterized by a semi-arid weather, low precipitation and seasonal behavior of rivers. This region is regarded lacking as ichthyological knowledge and one of the most threatened by anthropic activities. Further, will be affected by a massive water diverpsion work that will transfer waters from São Francisco basin, to other major four basins: Jaguaribe, Apodi-Mossoró, Piranhas-Açu and Paraiba do Norte. Loss of diversity and richness, hibridizitation, community interactions changes, population homogenization, changes in water quality and flow regime, are examples of environmental impacts already related with similar works. The present study aims to investigate morphological and molecular variation of Cichlasoma orientale Kullander 1983 and Crenicichla menezesi Ploeg 1991, two cichlid species present in northeastern Brazil basins. Further, the study aims to evaluate the influence of geomorphological and climatic processes in this variation...

The theme of this work is the university teaching and the main objective is to understand how some professors that are part of the teaching formation in biological sciences of Goias s Federal University (UFG) conceive their practices and what formative experiences they are able to offer to their future students. Since it is a study of a group of professors in a specific course, in a higher educational institution, this survey is characterized as a study case upon a qualitative approach, which seeks to identify the different points of view of practice opposing to the complexity of teacher formation. During the discussions many aspects which are related to the main theme of this work were addressed: a historical overview beginning with the creation of the Brazilian University and the teaching formation at university, and public policies that had been influenced this process directly, such as the guidelines for the undergraduate, in particular the degree in biological sciences. Among the theoretical bibliographies that substantiate these discussions were both national and international contributions. National literature: Masetto (1998); Rosa (2004); Pimenta (1994); among others. International literature: Shulman (2005); Tardif (2007); Vázquez (2007). The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with the participation of ten UFG s biology s teachers...

This paper has as its main purpose to highlight what are the concepts of future Science and Biology teachers from UFG about the controversy caused by the debate between the ideas of creationism and biological evolution concerning the origin and diversity of life. The study subjects were licensed teachers from the initial and final grades of the Biological Sciences course UFG. This study is based on the questions of quantitative and qualitative research. It was used as a method, case study and, as the main instrument for data collection, the questionnaire comprising two parts: 1) Licensed teachers socio-cultural profile and 2) A dilemma simulating a debate situation on the controversy analyzed. Analyzing the data collected and the bibliographies referred to the topic under this study, as results, the following scores / categories were obtained: a) With respect to subjects perceptions about the controversy creationism x biological evolution, it was evident that this dilemma is related to students familiar/religious formation; b) For future Biology teachers all ideas on the origin and diversity of life should be discussed and taught in the classroom and c) The justification to deal with these ideas in the classroom has a connection with a respect towards creationists opinions. From these three categories...

The purpose of this work is to perform the pharmacognostic studies of the species Hyptidendron canum (Pohl ex Benth.) Harley (Lamiaceae) and Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae), investigate the population variability of the constituents of the essential oil from H. canum leaves and inflorescences, and assess the bioactivity of the crude ethanol extracts and fractions from leaves of this plants against microorganisms (bacteria and the fungus Candida albicans) and on Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus. For the variability study of the H. canum essential oil, samples obtained from leaves and inflorescences from Hidrolândia, Silvânia, Bela Vista and Goiânia cities were analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. The anatomic analysis and the phytochemical screening of the leaves from the two species were performed using conventional techniques. The antimicrobial activity was assessed with Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and with the Candida albicans fungus using the well diffusion test and the agar dilution method to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). The biological activities of the crude ethanol extract and ethyl acetate, hexanic and chloroformic fractions of the leaves from the two species were tested in O. niloticus fish hepatopancreas and gill. The H. canum essential oils analysis indicated high chemovariability in the oils from different locations. The phytochemical screening and the thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis of the H. canum leaves evidenced the presence of flavonoids...

The species loss in recent decades can be comparable to a mass extinction event. This scenario emphasizes the need for biodiversity conservation before it disappears, but the resources devoted to this purpose are limited. In this context, identifying species that possess characteristics that predispose them to a greater sensitivity to environmental changes may help understanding how species losses occur. In addition, proposals for conservation strategies from existing knowledge about species are practical ways of minimizing the loss of biodiversity. The greater ecological diversity of the order Chiroptera, when compared with other groups of mammals, suggests that this may be a good study group to research in conservation biology. In this scenario, Chapter 1 uses a scoring methodology that considered four parameters to define priorities for conservation of bats: risk of extinction, endemism, originality and the public interest. Later, we checked if priority species and areas are covered by any protected areas. It was also verified if priority areas for bats are more congruent with global priorities, focused on pro-active or reactive strategies. The three species with the highest score for conservation priority were Acerodon humilis...

Among several environmental impacts caused by human activities, the release of domestic and industrial effluents has been major disturbances that cause degradation of water quality in natural systems by altering their physical, chemical and biological features. For this reason, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of discharging organic waste from five Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) on abundance, richness and composition of aquatic insect fauna present in streams receiving sewage, in addition to test the hypotheses that i) disturbance caused by the discharge of effluents from STP alters the abundance of some groups of aquatic insects in the site downstream when compared to the upstream of site and ii) the taxonomic composition of the downstream impact of STPs is modified by the presence of resistant taxa. Thus, the sampling of aquatic insects and measures of some limnological variable was carried out during the drought of 2010, with the Surber sampler, 100m upstream and 100m downstream from the effluent discharge. Chironomidae and EPT larvaes (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera) were identified to genus. To test the hypothesis, a paired t test was performed with logarithmic data of total abundance, a paired t test with the richness of taxa identified at family and genus level. To evaluate the composition of the taxa sampled in two parts in relation to environmental variables were carried out two CCA separately...

Classification systems are necessary to organize the huge complexity of biological systems. Frequently, these systems are useful to studies focusing on environmental monitoring, conservation plans and biodiversity assessments. Studies on phytoplankton ecology are, in general, conducted with the identification of organisms up to the species level. This is a costly, laborious and complex task that demands experienced biologists. However, for some purposes, higher taxonomic levels may be enough, mainly when main trends are identified by either data at low or higher resolution (taxonomic and numeric). In this study, it was evaluated if the temporal trajectories described by a lotic phytoplankton community, which were first summarized by an ordination technique, were dependent or not on the taxonomic/numerical resolution used to represent the data. The phytoplankton classification system in functional groups was also contrasted against simple taxonomic classifications in order to verify if they really offer distinct patterns of ordination. Procrustean analyses indicated that patterns of ordination generated by incidence data of genus were significantly concordant with the patterns generated by density of species. Temporal trajectories of scores derived from functional groups significantly matched those derived from analyses based on the quantitative data (density or biovolume) of genus or family. Thus...

Biological invasions has been a major threat to whole biomes around the world, affecting communities and ecossistems with consequences to the trophic web. At the same time it is a huge biogeographical experiment that allows the formulation of hypotheses about the rules for communitie assembly. This study tested the hypothesis that the level of phylogenetic relationship is positively correlated with the magnitude of competitive interactions, being stronger for closer species. We used two exotic African species (Panicum maximum and Andropogon gayanus) and a native of South America (Paspalum atratum-focal species) in a partial additive design for the mix of native-exotic, with an increase in density of the exotic. The results showed greater competitive effect on the focal species when in the presence of P. maximum (closer to the focal), suggesting that predictions can be made on potential invasive species based on the Darwin s Naturalization Hypothesys.; Invasões biológicas são atualmente umas das mais graves ameaças aos ecossistemas.

A general goal in community ecology is to understand how communities are organized in space and time. An aspect of great interest is to evaluate how concordant are the patterns of beta diversity depicted by different biological groups. If two taxonomic groups present a similar spatial/temporal structure, only one of these groups can be used as a surrogate group in conservation efforts or bioassessments. Also, a strong correspondence between biological groups and physical classifications of the habitat could help us to understand the reasons for spatial organization of communities. Moreover, if communities respond to a priori classifications based on geological and environmental features of the habitats, the selection of priority areas for conservation distributed on the classes of a classification scheme could maximize the conservation of overall biodiversity. Finally, to understand the main processes driving the organization of communities, the relative role of different set of predictor variables can be simultaneously evaluated. If species compositions are mainly predicted by environmental variables then one can conclude that species sorting mechanisms are the main drivers of community structure. On the other hand, if variables that represent spatial structure of the environments are the main predictors of variation in species composition...

By this research we proposed to perform an analysis of the political pedagogical project focused on teachers formation in two Biological Sciences undergraduate courses in Goiânia city - the Biological Sciences Licentiateship (BSL) at the Federal University of Goiás and the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás one - and the continuing education programs offered by Municipal Education Secretary, through the Education Center for Teaching, and by the State Secretary of Education and Culture, through the Special Education Management, from 2009 to 2010, in order to verify if, and how, such institutions were improving the Biological Sciences teacher training for inclusive education, as they prepared him to deal with diverse learning needs. We chose a qualitative approach and a documentary research. Official documents that establish the teacher education policy were analyzed as well as the inclusion policy in such institutions. For systematization and data analysis was used theoretically based content analysis. Seven themes emerged from reading and re-reading of the data: common aspects between legislation on inclusive approach and the political-pedagogical projects of the BSL courses; the educational and philosophical principles of inclusion adopted by projects; the organizational structure of the BSL – initial teacher education; issues related to inclusive education presented in disciplines of the BSL courses; the political fundamentals that guide the projects of continuing education courses for teachers offered by employing institutions; the pedagogical purposes of the continuing education courses offered by employing institutions; issues related to inclusive education discussed in the continuing education for teachers. We found that the BSL courses of the higher education institutions surveyed do not mention public policies concerned with preparing teachers for inclusive education. We also found that the historical...

The main objective of this research was to analyze and understand the role of assessment of learning in the training of teachers, especially those that work in higher education in the area of teachers training. Considering the entire evaluation context with their contradictions and controversies and the different concepts I decided to study the assessment of learning process in an undergraduate course of Biological Sciences, from the State University of Goiás, Brazil. The study included teachers and students of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades in that course. The proposal was to investigate the documents guiding of evaluation practice of teachers and trainers, in order to grasp the concepts of teachers and academics on the assessment of learning. To develop this proposal the following research questions was formulated: What are the conceptions of learning assessment from teacher trainers and students of Biological Sciences course in this University and yet, what are the consequences of these conceptions in teachers' practice and training of undergraduates? To answer these questions was carried out a qualitative study, whose method was the case study that considers relevant to observe and understand the subjects in their context of social and historical; I was also a participating in this study since it was considered for analysis of data my own experience beyond the academic experiences lived throughout my professional practice. It was noted that scholars tend to understand the assessment...
