Brucellosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by bacterium of the genus Brucella, which affects humans and different species of animals. Despite the implementation of programs aimed at the disease controlling and eradicating, brucelosis is endemic in many countries, especially in developing ones, resulting in significant economic losses and serious implications for animal and public health, due to its zoonotic character. The disease can be transmitted by direct or indirect contact with infected animals, fetal membranes, and also transmitted to humans by contaminated animal products, especially milk and dairy products that have not undergone thermal processing, by raw meat and the handling of carcasses and visceras at the slaughterhouse. The National Programme for Control and Eradication of Brucellosis (PNCEBT), established in the country in 2001, determines the diagnosis of animals in order to establish both the distribution and characterization of the agent. In this context and seeking for a rapid, safe and precise diagnosis of this disease in cattle, we aimed to detect Brucella spp by real time PCR in suspect lesions detected during routine inspection in slaughterhouses under Federal Inspection in the state of Goias, Brazil. Such lesions were related to cervical bursitis...

Fish farming has many commercial losses due to diseases. Parasitic diseases account for a large portion of this losses. In Brazil there are records of various parasites causing damage, and in Goiás were not found recent data on the occurrence of parasitic infections in commercial fish farms. This study aimed to identify and establish the occurrence of ectoparasites of tambacu hybrid, raised in commercial fish farms in the microregion of Goiânia-GO. Nine fish farms were evaluated between August and December of 2010, and samples were colected in two separate visits. Fishs were examined by direct microscopy for observation of the parasites. Of the 90 tambacu fish examined 46 (51.11%) were parasitized. It is concluded that hybrid tambacu fishes raised in the Microregion of Goiânia has the following parasites: Monognea sub-class, Trichodina sp..

The giant anteater is a peculiar mammal which during its evolutionary process, has undergone several body changes due to their insect-base diet. Although it is distributed throughout the country, it is a species typical of the Cerrado, which is threatened with extinction. In the last decade there has been an improvement in access to methods of imaging diagnostic in veterinary medicine, the availability of modern and faster techniques. These techniques have revolutionized the ability to explore non-invasive body parts. For a better interpretation of these techniques, knowledge of regional anatomy is required. However, data on radiographic anatomy of giant anteaters have not been reported. The aim of this study is to characterize and describe the outline contour of the spine bone and the hyoid bone of the giant anteater using radiographic and computed tomography images. Seven giant anteaters at various ages, from IBAMA, were used for radiographic examination and two adults for CT. The spine along its entire length and the hyoid elements were evaluated in all animals using both imaging techniques. Radiography provided satisfactory images of the bony contours and location of these structures, although the CT was more efficient to provide images with less overlap between them...

Producing more in less physical space and in less time, increasing the profitability and reducing sanitary and economical risks are some of the challenges of the Brazilian livestock that the intensive breeding aims to supplant. A considerable increase in the number of confining unities as well as in feedlot cattle is already observed, thus, the attention to the control of pathological alterations deriving from the production intensification that can compromise the profitability and the economical viability of such activities should also increase. Considering the context presented herein, this essay aimed to analyze the economical/sanitary viability of the usage of florfenicol (40 mg/kg) in the metaphylaxis of bovine respiratory diseases (BRD) in feedlot cattle in the state of Goiás, where two groups totalizing 125 animals were concurrently monitored during 100 days. The first group, having 32 animals, was maintained under the standard sanitary protocol of the confining groups and it was called control (G1). The second group, having 93 animals, was submitted to metaphylaxis with florfenicol (40 mg/kg) at the beginning of the confinement and it was called metaphylaxis (G2). In the both groups, the sanitary and the productive standards were evaluated and a financial analysis was performed in order to economically validate the method. The animals were examined...

The investigation of pathogens in wild animals can be considered an important tool for conservation of species and ecosystem. Chlamydiosis was first identified and is a common disease in psittacines. It is considered the most important zoonosis spread by these birds. Due to its infectious nature, this disease is studied all around the world. The mycoplasmosis is a common respiratory disease in pigeons, chickens and birds. However, parrots can be affected if they get in contact with the agent, and they can become a source of infection for the environment and for other birds. This study aimed to identify, through the polymerase chain reaction PCR technique, bacteria Chlamydophila spp., Mycoplasma gallisepticum and M. synoviae in captivity parrots in three different facilities in Goiás state: CETAS Centro de Triagem de AnimaisSilvestres, a conservation and a comercial captivity. The results were compared in order to determine wich facility is more perserved or contaminated by pathogens. For Chlamydophilaspp, CETAS facility showed 25.6% of positive samples, while the commercial captivity showed 26.4%, and the conservation captivity had no positive samples (0%). For the presence of Mycoplasma gallisepticum, CETAS presented 21.62% of positive samples...

Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is a chronic zoonosis caused by a protozoan called Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi and has as vectors, the sandflies Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia cruzi. The domestic dog is the most important reservoir in urban areas considering the zoonotic disease form and is responsible for maintaining the parasite in endemic foci. Aiming to assist the Superintendent of Policies for Comprehensive Health Care / Health State Department of Goiás (Spais / SES-GO) and the Department of Zoonosis Control from Goiânia (GO-DCZ) in epidemiological surveillance of the disease, this work investigated possible cases of CVL by using laboratory analysis. For this study, dogs seen at the Veterinary Hospital, School of Veterinary Medicine, Federal University of Goiás (HV / EV / UFG) with clinical suspicion of disease and symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs captured by DCZ-GO were analyzed. A total of 214 dogs were evaluated, and classified into three groups. Group 1 (GI): 33 dogs from DCZ with at least three clinical signs suggestive of LVC, Group 2 (GII): 141 clinically healthy dogs from DCZ and Group 3 (GIII): 40 dogs seen at the HV / EV / UFG with clinical suspicion of LVC. The frequency of animals classified as positive with different methods of diagnosis used in this study were: 5.6% (n = 12) in ELISA test...

In the last years, the interest for the study of the Brazilian fauna s animals has been increasing considerably as a result of the risk of extinction or aiming for the control of the diseases, specially the zoonoses. The Coati (Nasua nasua) is an exclusive species of South America, classified as vulnerable in some states of Brazil. In spite of its large distribution and importance, the data about its ultrasonographic anatomy was not found in the literature. The use of ultrasonographic examination in veterinary medicine is largely disseminated as a way of complementary diagnostic because it offers, as a non-invasive way, information about the organs anatomy and morphophysiology. Although ultrasonography is a largely disseminated complementary diagnostic method in the clinical routine of little animals, there are few accounts in wild animals. The aim of this study was to describe, in a comparative way, the ultrasonographic features and the topography anatomy of coatis liver, kidneys, adrenal glands, ovarian, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, urinary vesicle, spleen and uterus, and establish reference values to measure the kidneys, urinary vesicle wall and the gastrointestinal tract, contributing in this way with scientific material to the ultrasonography learn in this species. It has been used seven adult and healthy coatis originating from the Wild Animals Selection Center WASC...

In veterinary medicine, skin injuries represent a significant casuistry and require expensive therapies, considerable recovery time and often lead to unfavorable resolution. To establish an effective therapeutic protocol it is essential that the professional has a solid knowledge of the healing dynamic, as its phases, triggered events, features, as well as about the biological potential of the healing process coadjutants. Regarding these ones, it is known that phytotherapy has a wide range of botanical specimens with healing potential, and, among them, the barbatiman, native species of the Brazilian cerrado, by its antiseptic and astringent activities, becomes an attractive option for skin injures therapies. The chitosan biomaterial also has potential as coadjutant of the process, once it accelerates the triggering of the healing stages by its immunomodulatory property. To clarify the mechanism proposed by these agents, numerous tests are developed using laboratory animals, in order to give reliability to the therapy modality established. To follow clinical evolution in vivo, the clinical examination becomes essential, while morphometric analysis provide accurate data regarding the percentage of centripetal contraction of the lesions. Finally...

The Curraleiro cattle are extremely docile and resistant to infectious diseases and parasites. They may be used in exploration of low-quality pastures, without great investments, when other breeds could show a low productivity or even survival difficulties. This genetic potential runs risk to extinction due to its replace by more productive breeds. The Curraleiro cattle resistence to illness is popularly known and many works has been published about it, although its immunologic system physiology is completely unknown. Such features are plausible reasons for the preservation of this potentially genetic resource. So, the mean aim of this study was to establish an immunological profile by marking and quantification of T and B lymphocytes in Curraleiro breed with immunocytochemistry. Thus, it was used 116 bovines, male and female, with different ages from two farms situated at Goiás State, Brazil. The animals were allotted in groups according to age, sex and origin. Blood samples were collected and processed in accordance with immunocytochemistry standard technique using lymphoid markers species-specific, anti-CD3 (MM1A BoCD3) and anti-LB (LCTB16A clone B-B14), for T and B lymphocytes counting, respectively. All procedures were accomplished at Veterinary School...

The obesity is a morbid condition commonnly incident in veterinary practice, generally associate to the companion animals reduction of time and quality of life. This factor, added to the regularity that it is observed, makes from obesity, nowadays, the most important metabolism disease in dogs, being still able to promote serious health problems, including cardiovascular disorders. For this study, 14 medium-sized neutered mongrel adult female dogs were divided in two groups and submitted to a program of weight gain. Group I, presenting highest percentage of weight gain (average 21.4% above the initial weight, in average) and Group II, with shortest weight gain percentage (15% above the initial weight, in average). Afterwards, both groups were submitted to a obesity correction food program, to reach the initial weight. During the food programs, in the initial phase (T1), obesity phase (T2) and final phase of weight reduction (T3), examinations carried out were: electrocardiographic, radiographic and mensurations of the blood pressure. During the phases T2 and T3, ecodopplercardiographic examinations of all dogs were also performed. At the end of the experimental phase, every variables obtained were statistically evaluated, comparing the groups and the different phases within the same group. The results revealed no significant eletrocardiographic and ecodopplercardiographic alterations...

Eleven dogs and four cats with buccodental alterations, treated in the Centro Veterinário do Gama, in Brasilia, DF, Brazil, were submitted to cone beam computed tomography. The exams were carried out in a i-CAT tomograph, using for the images acquisition six centimeters height, 40 seconds time, 0,2 voxel, 120 kilovolts (kV) and 46,72 milliampéres per second (mAs). The ideal positioning of the animal for the exam was also determined in this study and it proved to be fundamental for performing the exam, which required a simple and safe anesthetic protocol due to the relatively short time necessary in obtaining the images. Many alterations and diseases had been identified, with extreme accuracy of the images, becoming the cone beam computed tomography as a safe, accessible and feasible imaging method which could be included in the small animals dentistry routine diagnosis; A tomografia computadorizada é uma modalidade de diagnóstico utilizada na odontologia desde a década de 90, que apresenta uma série de vantagens sobre outros exames de imagem, como menor exposição à radiação ionizante, menor tempo na aquisição das imagens, dispensa do processamento químico e menor custo. O exame tomográfico de feixe cônico é empregado na odontologia humana...

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of anti-Leptospira spp, identify the most prevalent serovars and to assess possible factors associated with Antileptospire seroprevalence in urban dogs in Araguaina city,Tocantins state. A cross-sectional study covering the canine population residing in urban areas was conducted. Household collection of sera was performed by prior consent of the dog owners. The houses that were involved in the study were drawn previously it started. There were analyzed 275 samples at total. Samples were obtained through cephalic vein puncture, with a 25 x 7 needle and then transferred to 5 to 10 ml test tubes with gel separator sequentially centrifuged, cryopreserved and sent for laboratory diagnosis of leptospirosis, at the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Federal University of Goiás Veterinary Medicine School (DMV / EV / UFG), which were processed by the microscopic agglutination test. In each household, a questionnaire was applied to obtain data on the possible associated factors that were analyzed by bivariate analysis. The leptospira seroprevalence detected was 13,8%, the most prevalent serovar was Castellonis (26.3%) and, Pyrogenes and Pomona, both with 10,5% of seropositive. The search for factors associated with infection by leptospira demonstrated statistically significant positive association between the variables season...
