O presente estudo trata da especificação e seleção de Jogos de Simulação de Empresas (JSE) para uso em Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES) nos cursos de administração. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica para ser obtida uma base conceitual que resultou na criação de postulados gerais sobre o uso desse aparato pedagógico. A estratégia adotada para esse procedimento foi considerar que as instituições de ensino superior formam profissionais por meio de cursos orientados para a formação de competências e, essas últimas devem orientar o processo seletivo dos aparatos pedagógicos. Com base nos postulados firmados foi desenvolvida uma arquitetura que prevê a descrição das necessidades da IES, como primeiro passo para a aplicação dela. Foram estabelecidos gabaritos de análise para descrição de exemplares disponíveis e procedimentos para a seleção deles. Em uma situação plausível de não existirem exemplares adequados para adoção pela IES, foi desenvolvido um gabarito de especificação das necessidades orientado para a produção de exemplares direcionados para elas, nas competências desejadas. Os jogos criados para treinamento militar no passado foram evoluindo ao longo do tempo e passaram a ser mais presentes no contexto das empresas e também como forma de treinamento para prever possíveis crises e antecipar as possíveis soluções. Os jogos de empresas foram se atualizando e, hoje, podem-se encontrar softwares desenvolvidos especialmente para a criação de um ambiente virtual, nos quais simulações são feitas de modo a melhorar o aprendizado dos alunos e treinar gestores de uma empresa. Graças a vários recursos que essa técnica de aprendizagem oferece, há um importante papel a ser desempenhado pelo gestor que a utiliza. A maioria das metodologias educacionais utilizadas em sala de aula é limitada em relação às experiências de aprendizado relativas ao mundo real. As pesquisas evidenciam que os Jogos de Simulação de Empresa (JSEs), que oferecem experiências reais, têm mostrado potencial para contribuir com o aprendizado e motivação do aprendiz. Consonante com esse potencial, observa-se crescimento na produção e na utilização de jogos de simulação na última década. Apesar do crescimento, há preocupação com a qualidade desse tipo de aprendizagem, fator crítico de sucesso. Estudos indicam que a avaliação formativa e o ensino personalizado podem ajudar na melhoria da qualidade do aprendizado de todos os aprendizes. Apesar de existirem pesquisas acerca do debriefing em JSEs, não foram encontradas pesquisas, acerca do impacto do debriefing formativo e personalizado em JSEs no ensino superior, no Brasil. This article reports on the impact of the implementation of a Business Simulation course in a PBL (problem-based learning) undergraduate Portuguese Accounting programme, designed to enhance graduates’ performance in the labour market. In essence, PBL is an organizational model that promotes the acquisition of knowledge through a staged sequence of contextualized problems of real professional situations that students can integrate in the future. The PBL educational approach is based on pragmatism, practical learning goals and competence, as an individual or team work. Our paper focuses on the power of learning styles, namely the ones inspired by PBL, to influence students’ motivations; and asks to what extent motivation contributes to dissimilar performances. The research was carried out making use of data triangulation (it includes the perspectives of students, graduates and academics), theory triangulation (several streams were used in the literature review) and methodological triangulation (it articulates quantitative and qualitative methodologies). The methodology made use of semi-structured interviews to academics and closed questionnaires to the remaining participants. Based on our evaluation, we argue that it is possible to identify two different types of drivers that may justify the presence and the reinforcement of students’ motivation: extrinsic (related to the real-world features of the model and its pragmatic nature) and intrinsic (related to the innovative aspects of the teaching methods and learning styles). Para aferir o atingimento dos objetivos da unidade curricular e a auto-avaliação efetuada pelos estudantes, foi-lhes apresentado um inquérito por questionário. The total time a customer spends in the business process system, called the customer cycle-time, is a major contributor to overall customer satisfaction. Business process analysts and designers are frequently asked to design process solutions with optimal performance. Simulation models have been very popular to quantitatively evaluate the business processes; however, simulation is time-consuming and it also requires extensive modeling experiences to develop simulation models. Moreover, simulation models neither provide recommendations nor yield optimal solutions for business process design. A queueing network model is a good analytical approach toward business process analysis and design, and can provide a useful abstraction of a business process. However, the existing queueing network models were developed based on telephone systems or applied to manufacturing processes in which machine servers dominate the system. Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited; The enlisted personnel assignment process is a major part in the United States Navy's Personnel Distribution system. It ensures warfighters and supporting activities receive the right sailor with the right training to the right billet at the right time (R4) and is a critical element in meeting the challenges of Seapower 21 and Global CONOPS. In order to attain these optimal goals the ways-to-do-it need to be customer-centered and should optimize both, the Navy's needs and the sailor's interests. Recent studies and a detailing pilot in 2002 used a web-based marketplace with two-sided matching mechanisms to accomplish this vision. This research examines the introduction of an Assignment Incentive Pay (AIP) as part of the U.S. Navy's enlisted personnel assignment process in a simulation environment. It uses a previously developed simulation tool, including the Deferred Acceptance (DA) and the Linear Programming (LP) matching algorithm to simulate the assignment process. The results of the sensitivity analysis suggested that the Navy should mainly emphasize sailor quality rather than saving AIP funds in order to maximize utility and the possible matches. MBA Professional Report; The objective of this project was to identify and more accurately predict the maintenance and supply chain costs and savings related to the Agile Rapid Global Combat Support (ARGCS) system. The project focused on a portion of the ARGCS business case analysis (BCA) model developed by CDR David Crosby. CDR Crosby's BCA model listed various potential savings associated with ARGCS technologies that were difficult to quantify during his initial BCA research. The focus of this research was to determine the likely benefits and cost savings that ARGCS may have on maintenance and supply functions. Using pre-existing maintenance and supply data, a model was developed to more accurately determine any maintenance and supply related cost benefits. The only F/A-18 Weapons Replaceable Assemblies (WRA) that were analyzed during this research were those that will be tested during the summer 2007 Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) at NAS Lemoore. Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited; Recent studies of 2-sided matching mechanisms have suggested potential benefits for implementation into the Navy enlisted assignment process. The proposed matching process improves the chance of commands and sailors being assigned either a sailor or billet of their choice. The same studies focused on a particular two-sided Deferred Acceptance (DA) matching algorithm which ensures stable matches, prevents "off-the-site" trades between the matching parties and upholds integrity of the matching system. Although stable matches are important in a voluntary labor market, the DA algorithm may still favor one party depending on whether the command or sailor biased form of the algorithm is used. The Linear Programming (LP) algorithm is an alternative that could optimize system (command and sailor) effectiveness and promote a balanced approach to meeting the preferences of both parties. Although LP does not guarantee stable matches, it is still employed by selective British hospitals for their matching with interns. The extent of the unstable matches has not been examined to measure it against the benefit of higher system effectiveness. Knowing that the human being is one of the most expensive and demanding resources, efficient personnel employing becomes significant. Simulation techniques can help accomplish effective staff assignments. The aim of this thesis is to create a simulation tool by using a prototypical model of the computer system specialist non-commissioned officers' jobs on a Turkish Air Force Base, and to identify the effective factors on computer specialist shortage problem. This aim is accomplished by using event graph and discrete event simulation techniques for modeling purposes, and Simkit and Viskit for implementing the created model into simulation code. After evaluating the simulation results from an experiment involving fifteen input factors, it was concluded that the staff shortage problem can be addressed by using this study after updating the parameters used in the model to reflect the most recent distributions. On the other hand, increasing the number of personnel is not the only solution for addressing the problem. In order to enhance graduatesʼ performance in the labour market a one semester Business Simulation course was designed and implemented. The course participants are students of the last semester in a PBL-type undergraduate Portuguese Accounting program. This work focuses on thepower of learning environments, namely the ones inspired by PBL, to influence studentsʼ motivations; and asks to what extent motivation contributes to differences in performance. Interpreting the results of this case study, it can be seen that the use of real-world problems encompassing different subject areas in conjunction with augmented teaching methods motivates students in both an intrinsic and extrinsic way. Using feedback together with the opportunity to improve submitted work is shown to have a huge importance on the learnersʼ enthusiasm and stimulation. O objetivo desta pesquisa é o desenvolvimento de um novo modelo conceitual para representação, de uma forma integrada, das mais diversas situações de conflito de interesses, como uma base para análise e projeto de controle de sistemas hierárquicos multiagentes, e para o aprimoramento da metodologia de capacitação de executivos para a administração estratégica desses conflitos. A survey was conducted among students of the Accounting and Administration undergraduate degree at ISCAP – IPP (School of Accounting and Administration of Polytechnic Institute of Porto) in order to understand their perception value of their course Business Simulation (BS). This course is provided in a business environment where students can learn by doing through the management of a company as they were in the real life, but risk-free. The learning tasks are provided in an action-oriented format to maximize the learning process. Students learn by doing a set of tasks every session and have also to produce reports and presentations during the course. BS is part of the undergraduate degree of Accounting and Administration at ISCAP – IPP since the beginning of 2003. The questionnaire we used captured the students’ perception about general and specific skills and competencies considered important for managers and accountants in the real life, about the methodology used in the course, which is totally different from the traditional form, and also about the adequacy of the course included as part of the undergraduate degree. The results showed that students’ perception is highly positive and almost all of them think they improve the skills needed for a job during the course. Research on the internal algorithms used to model business simulations have focused on individual components of the business system. Yet the business environment is complex in nature, characterized by interdependencies and nonlinear relationships that require a systems approach if effective game design is to be achieved. In this article, a system-dynamics-basedd interactive model of a business enterprise simulation is developed consisting of 18 equations. The model draws heavily on the economic theory of the firm and the expansive body of prior research on the design of business simulations. The focus is on the linkages between the production, cost, revenues, profits, and stock market value of the firm. A working model of the recommended system is tested, and its empirical properties are discussed. It is found that to develop effective algorithms within each functional area of business, the dynamic impacts on the whole enterprise must be evaluated.

New gaming software must undergo a series of tests before its general release. The objective of these tests is to ensure that the simulation is appropriate for its intended audience, plays well, possesses the requisite level of fidelity to the system being modeled, and is free from programming errors. This article first catalogs the design parameters associated with a good beta test. It then compares this ideal against the beta test created for a first-generation online business game released by a major online game publisher. It then examines the actual behaviors and results produced by the study’s beta testers to determine the degree the publisher and authors could be confident that the game met the criteria of targeted audience propriety, playability, model fidelity, and algorithmic accuracy. In this instance, this well-designed beta test could not guarantee the release of error-free software, and the likely reasons for this outcome are identified.

Among the various business valuation methodologies, the discounted cash flow is still the most adopted nowadays on both academic and professional environment. Although many authors support thatmethodology as the most adequate one for business valuation, its projective feature implies in an uncertaintyissue presents in all financial models based on future expectations, the risk that the projected assumptionsdoes not occur. One of the alternatives to measure the risk inherent to the discounted cash flow valuation isto add Monte Carlo Simulation to the deterministic business valuation model in order to create a stochastic model, which can perform a statistic analysis of risk. The objective of this work was to evaluate thepertinence regarding the Monte Carlo Simulation adoption to measure the uncertainty inherent to the business valuation using discounted cash flow, identifying whether the Monte Carlo simulation enhance theaccuracy of this asset pricing methodology. Business Games are, in their essence, educational games with simulation characteristics of simplified business situations to promote learning through experience. This article discusses the educational aspects of two “business simulation games” with which the author works against the literature of business games: The Sebrae (The Brazilian Service of Support for Micro and Small Enterprises) Challenge and the BIZgame, an integration game at the Entrepreneurial Campus. In both games, the participants simulate the management of an industrial business, working with relevant competencies for future entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial work. However, while the Sebrae Challenge is a competition involving thousands of students playing at the same time, BIZgame is a game that can be configured and applied by university professors in their classes. The article presents the evolution of business games and indicates potential convergences with technologies and models used in entertainment games. A typology of business games and a set of criteria, described in specialized literature, are employed to analyze the perceived benefits for professors and students, respectively, in the application and utilization of business games in an educational context.
