Avaliaram-se as características da carcaça e da carne de tourinhos Nelore alimentados com diferentes níveis de concentrado e farelo do mesocarpo do babaçu na dieta. Foram utilizados 28 tourinhos da raça Nelore, com idade inicial de 21 meses e 356,66±19,25kg de peso corporal inicial, distribuídos inteiramente ao acaso em dietas com dois níveis de concentrado (65 e 71%), associadas ou não à inclusão de 35% de farelo do mesocarpo do babaçu no concentrado. A elevação da fração concentrada na dieta de 65 para 71%, bem como a inclusão de 35% de farelo do mesocarpo do babaçu no concentrado, não alterou a quantidade de músculo, gordura e osso da carcaça, com valores médios de 63,91; 19,46 e 16,63% do peso de carcaça fria, respectivamente. O rendimento dos cortes comerciais secundários do traseiro especial não foi alterado pela inclusão de 35% de farelo do mesocarpo do babaçu no concentrado nem pelo teor de concentrado da dieta. Despite of the susceptibility to the Citrus tristeza virus (CTV), Pera sweet orange is the most important citrus cultivar in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the CTV aggressiveness and the relationship with the agronomic performance of 24 accessions of Pera and related sweet oranges. Accessions belonging to the Citrus Germplasm Collection of the Instituto Agronômico do Paraná (IAPAR), Londrina, PR, were included in the study. Citrus tristeza disease was rated based on the severity of stem pitting symptoms. Yields were evaluated in the 2010/2011, 2011/2012, and 2012/2013 seasons, and tree growth in 2012. The best performance regarding stem pitting severity was shown by Redonda accession, followed by Ipiguá II. Vegetative tree vigor was more evident for Redonda, Tardia CO3, and Guilherme Spagnol accessions. These Pera and related sweet oranges accessions also showed the highest fruit yields, along with Vimusa, Santa Tereza, Ipiguá, Ipiguá II, D-6, and Paulo Rosa. Vegetative tree vigor, yield and number of fruits were inversely correlated with citrus tristeza disease stem pitting severity. Therefore, the poor agronomic performance of some Pera and related sweet oranges is probably related to the presence of severe CTV complexes infecting these accessions.

An ATP-dependent glucokinase of the hyperthermophilic aerobic crenarchaeon Aeropyrum pernix was purified 230-fold to homogeneity. The enzyme is a monomeric protein with an apparent molecular mass of about 36 kDa. The apparent Km values for ATP and glucose (at 90°C and pH 6.2) were 0.42 and 0.044 mM, respectively; the apparent Vmax was about 35 U/mg. The enzyme was specific for ATP as a phosphoryl donor, but showed a broad spectrum for phosphoryl acceptors: in addition to glucose, which showed the highest catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km), the enzyme also phosphorylates glucosamin, fructose, mannose, and 2-deoxyglucose. Divalent cations were required for maximal activity: Mg2+, which was most effective, could partially be replaced with Co2+, Mn2+, and Ni2+. The hepatitis B virus genome carries the surface antigen (SAg) gene and an open reading frame that encodes two SAg-related polypeptides: SAg with a 55-amino-acid N-terminal extension polypeptide and SAg with a 174-amino-acid N-terminal extension polypeptide. These are termed middle S and large S, respectively. These polypeptides or their glycosylated derivatives have been detected in Dane particles, but their chemical and biological properties have remained largely unknown because of their limited availability. We attempted to produce these proteins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by placing the coding regions under the control of the promoter of the yeast glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene. Heterogeneity among Helicobacter pylori strains in gastric epithelial adherence is postulated to contribute to pathogen fitness in the physiologically diverse human population. H. pylori adherence to ABO and Lewis b (Leb) blood group antigens in the human stomach is mediated by the blood group antigen-binding adhesin BabA. Approximately 70% of Swedish and U.S. H. pylori clinical isolates exhibit Leb binding, but here we show that the babA gene is present in each of 10 Leb-nonbinding strains. Fluorescence microscopy identified occasional bacterial cells with a Leb-binding phenotype in populations of Leb-nonbinding strains. Thus, nonbinding seemed to be a metastable phenotype. To model metastable transition into the virulence-associated Leb-binding mode, Leb-binding clones were isolated from nonadherent strains by panning with Leb-magnetic beads and characterized. Strain 17875 has two babA genes, babA1 (silent) and babA2 (expressed). We found that a babA2-cam derivative of strain 17875 regained Leb binding by recombination of the formerly silent babA1 gene into the expressed and partially homologous babB locus. The chimeric BabB/A adhesin binds Leb with an affinity similar to that of wild-type BabA adhesin, but its expression level was lower and was subject to phase variation through slipped-strand mispairing. Equivalent results were obtained with strain NCTC11638. We propose that adhesin metastability and heterogeneity contributes to bacterial fitness and results in some clones having potential for periodic activation and deactivation of virulence appropriate for intensity of the host response to infection.

To evaluate the effects of pH control strategy on cell growth and the production of antibiotic (cyclo(2-Me-BABA-Gly)) by Xenorhabdus nematophila and enhance the antibiotic activity. The effects of uncontrolled- (different initial pH) and controlled-pH (different constant pH and pH-shift) operations on cell growth and antibiotic activity of X. nematophila YL00I were examined. Experiments showed that the optimal initial pH for cell growth and antibiotic production of X. nematophila YL001 occurred at 7.0. Under different constant pH, a pH level of 7.5 was found to be optimal for biomass and antibiotic activity at 23.71 g/L and 100.0 U/mL, respectively. Based on the kinetic information relating to the different constant pH effects on the fermentation of X. nematophila YL001, a two-stage pH control strategy in which pH 6.5 was maintained for the first 24 h, and then switched to 7.5 after 24 h, was established to improve biomass production and antibiotic activity. By applying this pH-shift strategy, the maximal antibiotic activity and productivity were significantly improved and reaching 185.0 U/mL and 4.41 U/mL/h, respectively, compared to values obtained from constant pH operation (100.0 U/mL and 1.39 U/mL/h).

Introduction: There are more than 300,000 extractors using the babaçu coconut as a source of income in the States of Maranhão, Pará, Tocantins and Piauí, and this activity is associated with fungal infections. The objective of this study was to examine the occurrence of emergent fungi in the conjunctiva, nails and surface and subcutaneous injuries of female coconut breakers in Esperantinópolis, Maranhão. Additionally, soil samples and palm structures were collected. Methods: The obtained samples were cultured in Petri dishes containing potato-dextrose-agar and chloramphenicol. The etiological agent was confirmed by a direct mycological exam and growth in culture. Results: In total, 150 domiciles were visited, and samples were collected from 80 patients. From the ground, the most frequently isolated fungus was Aspergillus niger (53. 8%). the most frequently detected fungus in babaçu coconut was Aspergillus niger (66.7%). Conjunctival fungal growth occurred in 76.3% of the women. The ocular fungal microbiota consisted of filamentous fungi (80.6%), and yeasts were present in 19.4% of cases. The prevalence, virological and epidemilogical aspects of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections vary among hemodialysis patients in different countries. Aiming at analyzing these aspects of HCV and HBV infections in hemodialysis patients in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil, we studied three hemodialysis units including 434 patients. Serology was used to detect anti-HCV and HBsAg. Reverse trancriptase nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nested-PCR) of the 5'-noncoding region was used to detect circulating HCV RNA and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis for genotyping. Seroprevalence varied from 26.5% to 11.1% for hepatitis C and from 5.9% to 0% for hepatitis B. Risk factors observed for HBV and/or HCV infections were the number of patients per dialysis unit, duration of treatment, number of clinics attended, number of blood units transfused, and lower level scholarity. Alanine aminotransferase levels were altered with a higher frequency in HBV or HCV seropositive patients. Half of ten patients, negative for anti-HCV, had detectable viremia by RT-nested-PCR, indicating that this technique should be used to confirm infections in this group of patients. On site Raman analyses were performed at the Mus\'{e}e national de C\'{e}ramique, S\`{e}vres, France, on rare Iznik (former Nicaea) pottery produced from ~1480 to ~1620. A comparison is made with a series of shards. The town of production of these potteries was highly disputed in the 80's and many questions still remain. The potential of glaze on-site analyses as a classification/datating tool is evaluated. The structure of the silicate glaze does not change with the sample (index of polymerisation ~ 0.5-0.8, indicating a lead silicate composition; characteristic Si-O stretching mode doublet at \~985 and 1030-1050 cm-1). By contrast the corresponding signature of most of the "K\"{u}tahya" wares peaks at ~1070-1090 cm-1. The lowest index is measured for a brilliant overglazed red bole, according to a lower temperature of (post)firing. The different crystalline phases identified in the glaze are -quartz, haematite, spinel, cassiterite, uvarovite garnet and zircon. White colour arises from -quartz slip in most samples studied. Cassiterite (SnO2) opacifier is only present in some early blue-and-white ceramics (Master of the Knots and Baba Nakkas style, ca. 1510-1530) and we do not have other evidence of its intentional use as an opacifier. The two arrays of the Very High Energy gamma-ray observatory Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will include four Large Size Telescopes (LSTs) each with a 23 m diameter dish and 28 m focal distance. These telescopes will enable CTA to achieve a low-energy threshold of 20 GeV, which is critical for important studies in astrophysics, astroparticle physics and cosmology. The neturon rich nucleus 13B was studied via the proton transfer reaction 4He(12Be,13B \gamma) at 50AMeV. The known 4.83-MeV excited state was strongly populated and its spin and parity were assigned to 1/2+ by comparing the angular differential cross section data with DWBA calculations. This low-lying 1/2+ state is interpreted as a proton intruder state and indicates a deformation of the nucleus.; Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Esta revisão de literatura teve como objetivo descrever as propriedades físico-químicas do biodiesel obtido a partir de diferentes matérias-primas. Foram estudados dados de viscosidade, densidade, número de cetanos, ponto de fulgor, ponto de fluidez, ponto de névoa e poder calorífico de biodiesel obtido de óleo de soja, de coco, farelo de arroz, algodão, pequi, babaçu, mamona, palma, dendê, girassol, milho, canola, pinhão manso e karanja. Considerando a diversidade de fontes vegetais e animais que podem gerar biodiesel ressalta-se a carência de dados de propriedades físico-químicas para as matérias-primas ainda inexploradas. Espera-se com este trabalho contribuir para a criação de banco de dados de propriedades físico-químicas do óleo e do biodiesel de diferentes fontes, o que permitirá projetar e dimensionar tanto os equipamentos necessários à linha de produção quanto motores alternativos.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar subsídios para uma proposta de desenvolvimento da Cadeia Produtiva do Babaçu como alternativa para gerar renda a famílias extrativistas dos espaços florestais de Rondônia. O estudo foi realizado em cinco Municípios de Rondônia no ano de 2010. Utilizou-se: entrevista estruturada para os segmentos de produção primária, intermediário, transformação, comércio, consumo e organizações sociais; informações disponíveis em diferentes sites; e os resultados de pesquisas do Instituto de Estudos e Pesquisas Agroambientais e Organizações Sustentáveis (IEPAGRO) realizadas com produtores agroextrativistas no Médio e Baixo Rio Madeira. Os resultados demonstram as potencialidades de subprodutos derivados. Conclui-se que a Cadeia Produtiva do Babaçu contribuiria no desenvolvimento econômico e socioambiental das famílias residentes em dois dos cinco municípios pesquisados.
