The increasing demand for raw material for multiple uses of forest products and by-products has attracted the interest for fast growing species, such as the Australian Cedar (Toona ciliata), which presents high productive and economic potential. The present work aimed at estimating genetic diversity by DNA markers and morphological traits supported for the mixed models. The following traits were measured and genotypes were sampled randomly in different areas: diameter at breast height, height, cylindrical volume, diameter, distance between nodes and crown diameter. Twelve RAPD primers were used and generated a total of 91 marks, 82 of which were polymorphic. The high percentage of polymorphic markers, 90.10%, demonstrated that discrimination in this species is efficient, but it yet little studied, for this case we can find the extent of the genetic basis for the application of technical improvement. The assessment of genetic diversity by the UPGMA method using the binary and morphological data provided the expression of genetic dissimilarities among the accessions evaluated, optimizing the perception of this divergence. The use of mixed models was efficient to assess combined genetic diversity to optimize the selection of genotypes with divergent genetic values for diameter at breast height.

In order to evaluate fertilizers doses in different substrates for growth and development of clonal matrices of Australian Red Cedar [Toona ciliata var. australis (F. Muell.) Bahadur], an experiment was conducted in a greenhouse. Five substrates were evaluate, with proportions by volume, the first consisting of 100% of Multiplant florestal®, the second of 50% vermiculite, 20% carbonized rice hulls, 20% soil and 10% coconut fiber, the third with 50% soil and 50% sand, the fourth was composed by 50% Multiplant florestal®, 10% soil and 40% coconut fiber and the fifth with 65% of Multiplant florestal®, 25% vermiculite and 10% carbonized rice hulls. The fertilizers doses applied were 0.0; 0.3; 0.6; 1.2; 2.4 of fertilization suggested by Malavolta (1980) for vases. The characteristics evaluated were: collar diameter of the matrices, production of dry mater by shoots, root system and total and accumulation of nutrients by shoot at the end of the experimental period of 150 days. The Australian Red Cedar plants have high nutritional requirements, as showed by the better development obtained with higher fertilizer doses than those suggested by Malavolta (1980). The substrate three provided the worst development to clonal matrices while the substrates 1...

In order to evaluate nutritional requirements and the effect of nutrient deprivation on the development of seedlings of Australian cedar (Toona ciliata M. Roem var. australis), a greenhouse experiment was conducted. The substrate used was a dystroferric red latosol with low nutrient availability, using 15 treatments and applying the missing element technique. The experiment included two complete treatments (one provided N, P, K, S, B, Cu, Zn with limestone while another provided N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu and Zn without limestone), besides deprivation of each nutrient (-N, -P, -K, -Ca, -Mg, -S, -B, -Cu and -Zn), one treatment with combined deprivation of B, Cu and Zn, one treatment applying limestone only, one treatment applying N, P, K, S, B, Cu and Zn, without limestone, and one absolute control treatment (natural soil). The following characteristics were evaluated: height, diameter, shoot dry matter and root dry matter, and nutrient content in the shoot dry matter after 150 days. Australian cedar plants have high nutritional requirements, and nutrients P, N, S, Ca, K, Mg and Cu, in that order, were found to be limiting factors to plant development. B and Zn deprivation did not affect plant development. Limestone application was essential for the development of Australian cedar plants. Initial deficiency symptoms were found to be the result of S...

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the natural resistance of composite and solid wood panels from Toona ciliata to fungal attack through accelerated laboratory testing, to characterize the anatomical components of the wood according to IAWA, to quantify the soluble and insoluble lignin contents by acid hydrolysis and to determine the colorimetric parameters before and after fungal attack by using the CIE-L*a*b*(1976) system. Solid wood was classified as moderately and highly resistant to white-rot fungus (Trametes versicolor) and to brown-rot fungus (Gloeophyllum trabeum). OSB panels were found to be resistant and moderately resistant to white-rot fungus and highly resistant to brown-rot fungus. Variation in species and particle type did not have a positive effect on the treatments. As regards the wood, both fungi were inhibited by the presence of phenolic resin. Particleboard panels were classified as moderately resistant to white-rot fungus. Treatments T2 (cedar) and T4 (cedar-eucalyptus) were resistant while treatment T3 (cedar-pine) was not resistant to attack by brown-rot fungus. The urea-formaldehyde resin failed to inhibit attack in the same way the phenolic resin did. Anatomically, the species was found to have medium texture...

The family Meliaceae contains the most valuable timber species found in tropical regions. However, plantation of such species in their natural range is limited by damages from shoot borers of the genus Hypsipyla. Nevertheless, specifically in Brazil, the commercial cultivation of Australian cedar (Toona ciliata) has been successful for presenting a satisfactory vegetative growth, adapting to the Brazilian soil and climate, but especially for being resistant to the cedar shoot borer attacks. In spite of these favorable conditions, the majority of existing T.ciliata commercial plantations is still recent and little is known about the log quality destined for timber industries. In this sense, the present work aims at qualifying logs of 18 years old trees, with dimensions fit for sawing and grown on plantations for timber industries. From the data gathered it will be possible to assess the variability between trees in order to define forest management strategies and of breed improvements for the species. It was used eighteen years old trees from the city of Marechal Floriano – Espírito Santo state. The logs were previously measured and their defects were evaluated afterwards and from which, the trees were classified. The classification showed that the most significant defects were knots and bumps and the least pronounced defect was the log taper. The trees showed significant variations regarding the defects...

The study aimed to evaluate the shrinkage, in the bottom-up and pith-bark direction, of the australian cedar wood from three Counties in the south of Minas Gerais state, and also to check the variation in chemical composition of wood due the location of planting. The australian cedar wood was obtained with four years of age and in three cities in the south of Minas Gerais state (Campo Belo, Cana Verde and Santo Antonio do Amparo). The chemical constituents of wood, shrinkage values (tangential, radial, longitudinal and volumetric) and the anisotropy coefficient. According to the results, there was no significant variation in the levels of holocellulose were determined, lignin, extractives and ashes between the three plantation sites evaluated. For the shrinkage of the wood in the bottom-up direction, there was no significant variation of the radial and longitudinal contractions for the three locations evaluated. However, significant variation was observed for the tangential and volumetric contractions for cities of Campo Belo and Cana Verde, and significant variation of Tangential contraction for the plantation of Santo Antonio do Amparo. In the pith-bark direction, significant variation was observed only on the radial contraction and the coefficient of anisotropy for location of Cana Verde.; Neste trabalho...

The aim of this work was to compare the resistance of Australian red cedar (Toona ciliata) and pine (Pinus sp.) woods and particleboards made from these species to dry-wood termite Cryptotermes brevis attack, as much as to quantify the mortality of the insects. 30 termite pseudo-workers were put in each 9,5 cm-diameter Petri dishes containing the samples (1,5 x 1,5 x 0,5 cm) and cotton sheets positioned on the perforated covers, daily moisturized with 5 ml of water. The dishes were maintained in BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) at 24±5 ºC and 24 h of escotophase. A control sample without any feed source was included in the bioassay. The deterioration index (ID) and mortality of the insects were evaluated after 60 days. Termites from the control sample presented higher termite mortality than the other treatments, which did not differ among each other. Toona ciliata wood was more resistant than Pinus sp. wood to Cryptotermes brevis attack. The average deterioration indexes were 1.74% and 6.62% respectively for those woods. The average deterioration index of the panels made with 100% Toona ciliata (ID=1.58%) was similar to the deterioration index of particleboards made with this specie mixed with Pinus sp. (ID=1.87%).; Neste trabalho...

The primary objective of this study was to provide some basic information about the ecology and behaviour of Hypsipyla robusta Moore, a serous shoot borer of Australian red cedar (Toona australis (F. Muell.) Harmes). First, quantitative analyses were made on the temporal and spatial patterns of infestation. This was followed by artificial rearing of the insect in the laboratory, modelling of temperature-dependent development, studies of the feeding behaviour of larvae, analyses of the die! patterns of reproductive activities, and preliminary investigations of the host selection behaviour of larvae and adults. The infestation patterns of the insect were investigated with sample data from a red cedar plantation. The temporal pattern of infestation levels was closely correlated to rainfall: the larger the amount the rainfall the higher the infestation levels. Temperature did not affect the general infestation levels, but low daily minimum temperatures in the winter(< 6.5 0C) were always associated with low proportions of attacked trees. Attack by the insect was concentrated on open-grown trees. However, attack on forestlocated trees was also observed. Among trees planted in the open, attack was largely a random process...

We examined Toona ciliata M.Roemer (Australian red cedar) for its potential to deliver annually resolved tree-ring proxy data. Such proxies are valuable and sought-after sources for reconstructing climate beyond instrumental records, especially in Australia. T. ciliata was chosen because it is one of the few deciduous tree species in Australia experiencing a seasonally dormant period of the cambium. This was confirmed by a preliminary tree-ring analysis which revealed distinct growth rings. Because of initial uncertainties regarding reliable annual growth rings in the wood of T. ciliata, a dendrometer-band study was conducted in addition to the tree-ring analysis. Stem increments revealed a common period of dormancy during winter and the measurements were found to correlate with both precipitation and temperature, depending on the site. For the first time, our tree-ring analysis demonstrated that samples from different individuals can be cross-dated and the resulting site index from Upper Kangaroo Valley (New South Wales) has the potential to reconstruct early season temperatures and late-season rainfall.

Australian Cedar (Toona ciliata), belongs to the Meliaceae family and has been cultivated in many Brazilian sites. When compared to natural forest species it has fast growth and has been used as an option to substitute native woods, such as mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and cedar (Cedrella odorata). The main purpose of this work was to evaluate the variation in apparent density and propose a model for stem mass estimation this study used trees with 52 months old, from plantation areas, in Campo Belo county, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Two distinct progenies were chosen and had wood discs removed in the following positions from the tree base: 0.15 m, 0.70 m, 1.30 m and 30%, 50%, 70% and 85% of the total height. Wood samples from the disks were collected in order to conduct X-ray densitometry. The X-ray densitometry allowed us to know density variation from pit to bark and from base to top of trees. The density increases from pit to bark. From base to top of the tree, the density decreases up to DBH position and, after that, increases until the top of the tree. The estimated value for mean apparent density was 0.422 g/cm³. Based on the longitudinal variation of apparent density it was possible to propose a model for mass estimation. The model...

AbstractThe objective of the present study was to characterize the wood of trees Toona ciliata at 6, 12 and 18 years old, coming from forest plantations in the region of Venda Nova do Imigrante at Espírito Santo State in Brazil. We evaluated the physical properties as the specific gravity and shrinkage, and the mechanical parameters in relation to the compressive strength and modulus of rupture and elasticity in static bending. We use tree logs that were sawed and prepared the samples for analysis according to standards MB 26/40 (ABNT, 1940) e NBR 7190 (1997). We observed an increase in specific gravity and decrease of tangential and volumetric shrinkages and the anisotropic factor with the increase for the age. The use of this wood should be limited in situations which high mechanical strength is required and manufacture of products with high dimensional stability. We should opt for more aged trees, allowing the applicability of quality wood for various purposes.

AbstractThis research aims to make a climatic zoning for the species: Tectona grandis, Toona ciliata, Bactris gasipaes and Azadirachta indica, in State of Espirito Santo. It was used meteorological data from 1977 to 2006, considering eighty rainfall posts of the ANA, located within the state and sixteen posts in surrounding states. Eleven weather stations belonged to INCAPER and three other stations to INMET. The climate elements used were air temperature and annual water deficiency, calculated for a soil water storage capacity of 300 mm. It used geographical information system, ranking the State in areas of climatic suitability. As result, it indicates that the Azadirachta indica can be implanted in 54.7% of the total area of the State, this high value is due to its low restriction in relation to climatic requirements compared to other species. However, Bactris gasipaes is the species that has the lowest amount of area suitable for its implementation (4.2%), due to its thermal and water restrictions not suitable to the State conditions. Tectona grandis and Toona ciliata revealed climatic suitability, respectively, in 33.3% and 27% of the total area of the State.

AbstractEffect of shading screens on growth and protection of Toona ciliata seedlings under low temperatures. AbstractForest species present around 75% of their nutrient demand in the initial growth stage. The objectives of this study were: to determine appropriate doses of N, P and K to be applied for Australian cedar cultivation in Oxisols; and to establish foliar contents suitable for the initial stage of plant development. Three concomitant experiments were carried out using randomized blocks design with four replications. In the first, it was provided 5 doses of N, and in the second 5 doses of P2O5, and in the third 5 doses of K2O. In all three experiments, Australian cedar seedlings were planted at 3x2 m spacing. Maximum economic yield (MEY) was achieved when was provided 75 g N, and 80 g P2O5 per planting hole. In this study, could not be established the dose of K2O that allows MEY, because there was no difference in height and diameter of plants as a function of potassium fertilizer rates. The initial K concentration in the soil (around 100 mg.dm-3) seems adequate to meet the nutritional needs to Australian cedar seedlings. Foliar concentrations did not vary with levels of N, P2O5 and K2O applied to soil. Mean content of N, P and K in the leaves of Australian cedar seedlings were 30, 18 and 2 mg.kg-1, respectively.

AbstractProductivity of cedar Australian ministumps in function of the initial nutrient. The Australian cedar wood, planted in Brazil to aim at saw wood production, was anatomically characterized, evaluating the constituent elements variation from pith to bark, as well the relationship between fiber dimensions, index indicating the quality of cellulose produced. Were obtained discs at breast high (DBH) of five trees with 18 years old. The wood has heartwood and sapwood distinct, growth rings distinct without lens, fine to medium texture, with brightness and straight grain. Tangential diameter of vessel lumina and ray width increased from pith to bark; unlike vessels per square millimeter and rays per millimeter that decreased. The mean values of vessel element length, fiber length, fiber width, lumen diameter increased from pith to bark, and fiber wall thickness had a little variation, but not statistically significant. A madeira apresenta cerne e alburno distintos...
