A primeira...

non-peer-reviewed; This study has been devised to both raise awareness on the topic of risk attitude within risk management, but also to advise practicing organisations on the shortfalls of risk management standards, which may have been consulted in the development of their own individual risk management plans. Within this study, the methodologies outlined for dealing with risk attitude, within three risk management standards; the IRM standard, PRINCE 2 and the PMBOK, are examined. Furthermore the different methods, tools and techniques highlighted by different authors in the field are also amalgamated. From this the critical elements for managing risk attitude are identified and used to determine the effectiveness of the risk management standards in managing risk attitude within decision making. Risk attitude can affect ones decision making both in a positive or negative manner and as all stages of the risk management process are executed by individuals there is need for it to be managed effectively. Moreover many authors have argued that there are significant shortfalls with regards the management of human factors in the risk management process. From this study it was discovered that there is no exact method for managing risk attitude...

Various studies have embarked on identifying differences between existing entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs. Many of these studies used personality characteristics and demographics to explore these differences but to no avail. The use of attitude theory, however, has shown promise in predicting behavioural tendency differences between existing and non entrepreneurs. Various questions, however, remain unanswered including ... Whether entrepreneurial attitudes are inherent in nascent entrepreneurs or whether they develop through exposure to business? To what extent do entrepreneurial attitudes develop over time and how are they related to business start-up? To what extent is it possible to develop entrepreneurial attitudes in non-entrepreneurs? If this is possible, are these attitudes sustainable over time that will lead to business start-up behaviours? In dealing with these unanswered questions, a potentially problematic issue that has been identified with the attitude construct in the psychological literature is that attitudes may not be stable. Thus, attitude toward an object may change. Validated entrepreneurial attitude scales have been developed and deployed; however, most key studies have been cross-sectional and so have not been able to measure whether temporal changes occur. This research adopts a repeated measures longitudinal approach to measuring entrepreneurial attitude so as to be able to address this issue. In addition...

The field of Ocean Robotics Engineering is expanding rapidly and there is demand for low cost, compact and light-weight small-satellites to communicate with remote ocean bound devices. This paper discusses the work carried out with the school’s microsatellite group and focusses on the attitude control system which is vital for accurate satellite operation. Establishing a mathematical model for micro-satellite attitude control system contains positioning sensors system, kinematic and dynamic concept of the attitude and statistic processing methods and so on. In this dissertation, based on the Euler angle and Quaternion principles, we built the attitude kinematic model. By considering the magnetometers data and Fuzzy Control method the attitude estimation, was studied and investigated. The paper would also provide a brief investigation towards the modes of attitude control process and analysis. The result of unloading of a momentum wheel by magnetic rotation and precession damping is studied using Simulink. The control system model is included with relationship of three-axis motion simulation, to determine the pitch-channel and roll-yaw channel respectively. This process would define the stability controller problem of wheel unloading and protected mode for small-satellite stabilization.; http://www.mssanz.org.au/modsim2013/index.html; Xiaoguang Yi and Amir Anva; 22nd National Conference of the Australian Society for Operations Research — ASOR 2013 DSTO led Defence Operations Research Symposium — DORS 2013

A new algorithm is proposed that smoothly integrates the nonlinear estimation of the attitude quaternion using Davenport's q-method and the estimation of non-attitude states within the framework of an extended Kalman filter. A modification to the q-method and associated covariance analysis is derived with the inclusion of an a priori attitude estimate. The non-attitude states are updated from the nonlinear attitude estimate based on linear optimal Kalman filter techniques. The proposed filter is compared to existing methods and is shown to be equivalent to second-order in the attitude update and exactly equivalent in the non-attitude state update with the Sequential Optimal Attitude Recursion filter. Monte Carlo analysis is used in numerical simulations to demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach. This filter successfully estimates the nonlinear attitude and non-attitude states in a single Kalman filter without the need for iterations.

Nationally, as well as at state and local level, 75% of students in Grades 4, 8 and 12 have been determined to be writing at the basic or below basic level. In 2012, the standards were made more stringent for the incorporation of details and adherence to customary English conventions. After that, students’ writing scores plummeted. Hispanic students scored more poorly than their White counterparts. Earlier studies indicated that students’ attitude towards writing becomes less positive as they progress through the grades. The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of extra writing on 60 fourth-grade, Hispanic students’ writing, and their attitude towards writing through participation in a Writers’ Club versus an At Home Writing Group or a group with no extra writing. The study followed a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest, non-equivalent group design. The groups were the Writers’ Club (n = 22), the At Home Writing Group (n = 18 and no extra writing (n = 20). All students received regular writing instruction and homework. The Writers’ Club met 24 times for 30 minutes each meeting, over an 8-week period. Pretest and posttest writing samples were evaluated using Spandel’s Teacher Six-Point Writing Guide and attitude towards writing was evaluated using Kear...

One hundred and five primarily Caucasian undergraduate couples were tested to study the phenomenon of attitude alignment, or the way in which individuals change their opinions to achieve greater attitudinal congruence with their romantic partners, and the hypotheses that relationship closeness, affect, attachment, social desirability, and centrality are each related to attitude alignment for individuals in close couples. The couples filled out an attitude questionnaire consisting of 50 issues in which they were asked to give their attitude on a scale from 1 to 9 as well as to rate the centrality, or importance, of that issue on a scale from 1 to 9. Before discussing four of these issues with each other - 2 were more central to the man and less central, or peripheral, to the woman, whereas the other 2 were central to the woman and peripheral to the man - the individuals completed established measures of relationship closeness, affect, attachment, and social desirability. The couples then filled out the identical attitudes questionnaire again, and their answers on the four discussion issues were compared to their prediscussion answers to determine whether attitude alignment had occurred. There were two experimental groups: a social desirability group...

This thesis takes as its starting point a body of literature focusing on what is commonly referred to as ‘everyday aesthetics’. This literature is engaged in the process of chipping away at the intuition that the artwork is the paradigmatic object of aesthetic experience. My aim is to lend support to the everyday project. The everyday aesthetician is concerned with defending the possibility of aesthetically experiencing an elegant ottoman, a luxurious car, and a stylish pair of pants. Some doubt that appreciating such everyday objects as listed above can properly be described as aesthetic. I argue that this doubt is mistaken and due to an art-centric conception of the aesthetic. I will defend the legitimacy of everyday aesthetics by appeal to aesthetic attitude theory. I argue that we can legitimately understand our everyday lives as aesthetic by appeal to a mental activity that human beings are capable of engaging in. In Chapter Two, I give a historical account of the aesthetic attitude theory as it has been traditionally conceived. I turn my attention to everyday aesthetics in Chapter Three. There is some tension between the everyday project and aesthetic attitude theory. The latter tends to recommend divorcing objects from their practical dimensions. One view on offer contends that this is a misleading strategy. To divorce the ordinary from practical considerations is to rob the experience of the very thing that gives it its everyday quality. Chapter Four introduces a philosophical compromise by way of a more nuanced version of the aesthetic attitude theory. I suggest that a plausible construal of an attitude theory should not commit it to being an unusual...

The effects of various antecedents to cognitive elaboration on the structural properties and subjective beliefs related to attitude strength were examined in 2 experiments. Participants read vaccine-related information and received arguments for and against the implementation of a vaccine program for a fictitious virus. Their ability and motivation to attend to the central merits of the arguments were manipulated using a 2 (high vs. low ability) x 2 (high vs. low motivation) between-participants design, and the effects on 21 attitude- and attitude-strength related outcome variables were observed. Ability was determined by time pressure (Study 1) and distraction (Study 2), and motivation was determined by personal responsibility (Study 1) and involvement (Study 2). A meta-analysis of the experiments revealed that whereas none of the structural properties related to attitude strength were affected, all of the subjective beliefs were affected, and ability and motivation had differential effects. Ability primarily affected beliefs that reflect the validity and consistency of the knowledge base as well as the intensity of the attitude; motivation affected beliefs that reflect the intensity of the attitude and the functional relevance of the attitude object. As well...

Mathematics is generally everywhere. Its laws can be observed in the most basic living organism to the very complex nature of the universe. The importance of learning mathematics during undergraduate training cannot be understated as it is necessary for students to understand the rudiments and complexity of the world around us. It follows that as they study mathematics, it is important that they maintain a favorable attitude towards math. Attitude influences not only how a person perceives the world around him but also how he interprets situations, circumstances and actions of others. Hence, a more positive attitude has to be developed among university students at an early stage to enable them to make the right choices and decisions in life and in learning. This study is an attempt to determine the attitude of freshmen student who are taking a math subject in the fall semester of the academic year 2013-2014 at the University of Évora, Portugal. A questionnaire was developed, which underwent item, factor and reliability analyses, and used to gather data about students’ attitude towards math and their motivation, interest, perceived competence and anxiety levels. The results of this research show that freshmen students initially have positive attitude towards math prior to commencing university formation. There is a strong positive correlation between attitude and the motivation and interest...

In this thesis, a novel attitude estimation device is proposed utilizing cost-effective measurement sensors. The device fuses a rate gyroscope with an accelerometer array to estimate and eliminate the rate gyro bias online yielding accurate real time aircraft attitude tracking. Attitude determination algorithms are dependent on instantaneous and accurate measurements of translational and rotational body rates for precise estimation of vehicle orientation in three-dimensional space. Measurement error of instantaneous rate sensors, gyroscopes, is introduced via inherent biases and signal noise resulting in gyro drift. Integration of the rate signal for calculation of a net displacement amplifies these minute measurement errors leading to inaccurate and unreliable attitude observation. The proposed device is a departure from typical attitude observers and bias estimators due to its reliance on accelerometers measuring the local gravitational vector in lieu of additional magnetic field sensors or GPS. The end result of this work is a longitudinal attitude estimation device able to compute a rate gyro bias in real-time producing accurate pitch angle tracking while subjected to simulated aircraft flight conditions. The effectiveness of the newly constructed attitude estimation algorithm is demonstrated by comparison of attitude and rate gyro bias estimates produced from noise corrupted and biased sensors with the actual attitude of a nonlinear aircraft model and true rate gyro bias.

In this thesis, a previously developed, novel one-dimensional attitude estimation device is expanded through the development and implementation of an innovative method for estimation of two-dimensional attitude making use of a unique low-cost, dual arc accelerometer array measuring longitudinal and transverse rotational rates in real-time. The device and method proposed is an expansion of a previously developed method for one-dimensional attitude determination and rate gyro bias estimation utilizing a one-dimensional accelerometer array. This new revolutionary device utilizes a dual arc accelerometer array and an algorithm for accurate and reliable two-dimensional attitude determination and rate gyro bias estimation in real-time. The method determines the local gravitational field vector from which attitude information can be resolved. Upon determining the location of the local gravitational field vector relative to two consecutive accelerometer sensors, the orientation of the device may then be estimated and the attitude determined. However, this measurement is discrete in nature; therefore, integrated rate gyro measurements are used to determine attitude information resulting in a continuous signal. However, attitude estimates and measurements produced by instantaneous rate sensors and gyroscope integration tend to drift over time due to drift and bias inherent to the rate gyro sensor. The integration of the acquired instantaneous rate signals amplify measurement errors leading to an undependable and imprecise estimate of the vehicles true attitude and orientation. A method for compensation of these errors is proposed in this work resulting in a highly accurate and continuous attitude estimate. For this thesis...
