No primeiro capítulo...

This paper will attempt to analyze how, in the film The Artist by Michel Hazanavicius, the sound is used in order to serve its semiotic structure as an apparently silent movie. We will try to show the composition of the diegetic structure and, throughout the film, its relation to the soundtrack semiotic values. It is our aim, also, to demonstrate how the film is a symbolic reference to the relationship between pictoral and verbal languages usually the basis of every movie. We will analyze, as well, as throughout the film some symbolic elements are structured allowing an overall and coherent reading of the film as a vision of the relationship between words and images in the communicational process.; Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics; While working as an intern for the social enterprise Book a Street Artist, I was responsible for implementing an internationalization plan. Due to the lack of information about how social enterprises internationalize, a three-plus-two step structure has been developed and applied to the enterprise. This work demonstrates that to precisely scale up social impact, the actual implementation of social enterprises´ internationalization should be done in a rapid, not necessarily systematic manner. Therefore, the best way to internationalize is based on an implementation strategy which is suited to the enterprises´ actual market conditions and its business model.

This study, inserted into the Research Line Training and Teacher Professional Process, aimed to identify and analyze aspects of professional identity of teacher - artist who works in higher education. Thus, it was necessary to understand the reasons that lead this professional to join the university teaching, besides knowing about the aspects that constitute the identity of the teacher - artist who exercises teaching at the university. The concept of teacher - artist constructed in dialogue with references as Célia Maria de Castro Almeida (1992) and Késia Mendes Barbosa (2006) serves to clarify the concept of professional identity and inclusion of teacher - artist in the formation of Higher Education. Along with this concept, the narrative of the first institutions of higher education in Brazil is delineated, in order to elucidate how the genesis of the university teacher training throughout history happened, especially the teacher - artist. These informations are the base for understanding the evolution of the professional training and the identity of the teacher - artist of Higher Education in dialogue with Carmen Lucia Abadie Biasoli (1999), Luiz Antonio Cunha (2003) e Ana Mae Barbosa (2005). Thus, the analysis turns to the concept of teacher identity focusing these authors who propose analysis and discussions on the topic. The highlights of this concept are: Valter Soares Guimarães (2004)...

This research has its focus on a discussion about “Gibis”, Artist Books by Raymundo Colares. It study examines aspects of his life history, his fragmented urban visualities and a dynamic group of images that compose, transform and decompose. The “ Gibis” make evolve geometric forms in multiple narratives of time, space and movement in an interaction between constructivism and pop art. The investigation analyses poetic appropriations of space, which demand touch and manipulation, necessary conditions for dilution of boundaries between subject and object, author and observer. It seeks to understand aspects of the pedagogical process in the construction of these artistic artifacts. Moved by the curiosity to understand and explore pedagogically the Gibis, I developed creative practices of productions of Gibis with students from the Visual Arts Course at the University of Montes Claros – UNIMONTES. I expanded this universe through the workshop “ Artesania dos Gibis” offered to art teachers and students. Additionally I interviewed two groups of collaborators. The first, subjec ts that did not know Ray Colares‟ Gibis and, the second...

This paper examines the creative practice and product of the visionary artist, the artist who brings forth a new vision of wholeness for the social group. A description of the general creative process is provided according to Jung's view of the transcendent function. It is by this process that a new vision may be understood to arise. The activity and product of the visionary artist is then reified by situating it within an historical conception of the God-image and as a cultural canon. Drawing from Neumann, three phases or roles of the visionary artist are discussed, the establishment of a culture's new vision, the maintaining of the culture's existing vision, and the enduring of the fragmentation of a culture's, exhausted, vision. A more detailed account, including examples, is then given for the role of the visionary artist within the present state of the West's cultural cannon, a state of fragmentation or, as it often known, the wasteland, a time when the spiritual wholeness has broken down. Finally the artist Peter Birkhäuser is briefly discussed to query the role that analytical psychology may explicitly play in supporting the visionary artist.; Robert Matthews

‘Hidden’ is a novel exploring ideas of secrecy, self-presentation and what it means to be an artist. The two main characters are Jemima, an art student at university, and Clement. They meet at a party when Clement walks in on Jemima cutting herself. Something about Jemima reminds Clement of his sister, Hannah, who died as a result of her anorexia. Jemima is intrigued by Clement’s reaction to her cutting and finds herself drawn to the only person who knows her secret. While she finds comfort in the fact he knows something she keeps hidden, and the space of intimacy this creates, she refuses to participate actively in that intimacy, keeping him, emotionally, at an arm‘s length. Clement and Jemima travel separately to Barcelona. Clement visits before the start of the novel and returns early when Hannah is readmitted to hospital. Clement remembers Barcelona in a twist of pleasure and pain. It is where he found his artistic voice and where he felt free as an artist for the first time. At the same time, however, he feels that he deserted Hannah for art, represented by Barcelona. Since his sister‘s death, Clement has become ‘anorexic’ about art. In an attempt to control something in this uncontrollable world, he avoids seeing or creating art. Jemima...

While the influence of computer technology has been widely studied in a variety of contexts, the drawing teaching studio is a particularly interesting context because of the juxtaposition of traditional medium and computer technology. For this study, 5 Canadian postsecondary teachers engaged in a 2-round Delphi interview process to discuss their responses to computer technology on their drawing pedagogy. Data sources included transcribed interviews. Findings indicated that artist teachers are both cautious to embrace and curious to explore appropriate use of computer technology on their drawing pedagogy. Artist teachers are both critical and optimistic about the influence of computer technology.

This study investigates the production of knowledge through the archives of artist-run centres in Canada in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Archival scholars recognize that the ways materials are collected, presented, and controlled in an archive can impact the types of narratives that may be created from them. But how do such operations occur in artist-run centres, and what challenges might they pose to the construction of historical narratives? What can the ways in which centres define, organize, and provide access to their archival materials reveal about artist-run culture? More specifically, how do systems of ordering, acts of donation, archival architecture, and virtual archives of artist-run centres affect the potential use of these materials in future histories? This contemporary art history thesis borrows literature and questions from cultural studies and archival science. I explore the multiple and fluid forms of archives claimed by each of these overlapping disciplines, and by artist-run centres themselves. To generate new information about artist-run centre archives, I employ a sociological-ethnographical approach, undertaking a broad survey of arts-related self-organized entities, and conducting interviews with selected representatives of artist-run centres. The assumption that informs these methods of investigation is that information about artistic...

In this thesis I critically analyze the ways in which the work of Nova Scotian artist Maud Lewis circulates within the categories of “fine art” and “Folk art” by examining three documentary films that deal with her life and work. My aim is to draw attention to Lewis’s current status in Canada as an artistic genius –an individual of seemingly exceptional talent who is also a Folk artist – that is, paradoxically, a “Folk artist-genius.” As vehicles through which to explore the construction of Maud Lewis and the concept of the Folk artist-genius I examine three films about Maud Lewis produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the National Film Board (NFB): The Once-Upon-A-Time World of Maud Lewis (CBC, 1965), Maud Lewis: A World Without Shadows (NFB, 1976) and The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis (NFB, 1998). Lewis exemplifies the qualities identified with the Folk, including geographic isolation, rusticity, simplicity, closeness to nature, industriousness and innocence. Yet, while she is thoroughly imbued with Folkishness, she is simultaneously viewed as the artist-genius, an individualized and mythologized character of sublime talent. Her originality, prodigy, virtuosity and spirituality are hailed as indicative of her genius...

Submillimeter observations are a key for answering many of the big questions in modern-day astrophysics, such as how stars and planets form, how galaxies evolve, and how material cycles through stars and the interstellar medium. With the upcoming large submillimeter facilities ALMA and Herschel a new window will open to study these questions. ARTIST is a project funded in context of the European ASTRONET program with the aim of developing a next generation model suite for comprehensive multi-dimensional radiative transfer calculations of the dust and line emission, as well as their polarization, to help interpret observations with these groundbreaking facilities.; Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure; to appear in "IAU Symposium 270: Computational Star formation", Eds. Throughout most of her novels, Virginia Woolf enquired into the nature of art produced by women. She sought to articulate a discourse about female aesthetics. The aim of this paper is to look into the portrayal of the female artist in Virginia Woolf's novels in contrast with the male artistes, and justify why these portraits often appear to the reader as almost devoid of gender labels. In order to study this question, closer attention is paid to the main female and male artist characters in Virginia Woolf's novels 'To the Lighthouse' (1927) and 'The Voyage Out' (1915); A través de la majoria de les seves novel•les, la Virginia Woolf investiga sobre la naturalesa del art creat per les dones. To the Lighthouse' (1927) i 'The Voyage Out' (1915)

As the project of the author's Master's thesis, the development of a spectral and colorimetric database of artist paint materials for acrylic paints was started. The goal of this research project was to: - provide the academic resource of colorant spectral characteristics - give scientifc explanations on various paint-particular phenomena (paint mixing, gloss effects and color gamut expansion by varnishing) These tasks were planned to satisfy possible interests on paint research from not only conservators in museums but also color educators in schools and color reproduction engineers in imaging companies.

Traditional art forms have contributed greatly to the interactive design industry and many designers still gain inspiration from painting, carving, weaving, photography, and other various arts. The artist book, which is a fairly new art form, is a mixture of old and new concepts but different from other art forms in that part of the viewer’s experience is made up by physically interacting with the book. To draw a modern day comparison, this interaction of the viewer to the book, is similar to the interaction of a user to a flash site. The goal of this interactive project is to compare two art forms, the artist book to the flash site, and from said comparison, gain insight and inspiration from the user’s experience of the two. By first interacting with the artists’ books that I have created, and then through exploration of the flash site that emulates them, users will have the chance to compare the two experiences and decide which is more compelling. Exploring an artist book will give users a glimpse of a unique type of communication. In an age where computers, television, and books are the main avenue of information, the online artist book is a refreshing and intimate way of connecting people to ideas and allowing them to also experience those ideas.
