Dissertação de mestrado em Design and Marketing de Moda; This work aims to present the relationship between art and fashion in the 20th century western culture focusing particularly on art movements and how fashion and art inspired each other throughout the years. The specific art movements which are investigated are Surrealism, Cubism, Pop art and the inspiration in contemporary designers such as Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. Notions of fashion and art have been investigated by various numbers of academics and philosophers and the relationship of the two has also been an interesting, yet a demanding topic for a research. Co-existing affair of the two terms has been pointed out by working on specific cases such as Dali and Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent and several painters like Picasso and further more delving would lead to many more examples. This work intended to exhibit the bold aspects of how fashion and art interacted in terms of design, culture and performance; by some means searching for ways to evaluate art work in aesthetical term and try to measure fashion pieces in the same way. The work is constructed on explaining terms art, fashion, aesthetics and art movements and investigating them further on aspects of design and designers in order to depict the existing relationship with the help of visuals. The academic articles of scholars have also been examined to provide more evidence to the subject matter. With Worth...

In the present dissertation aesthetic meaning making is understood as a process combining perceptual, emotional and cognitive shares that can be experienced as more or less successful and satisfying in relation to the final understanding of a painting’s meaning. Referring to different scientific fields, such as philosophy, visual sciences, art history and psychology, it is explained that paintings represent meaning on different levels of abstraction that have to be considered in dependence to multiple contexts, such as personal previous knowledge and level of experience, or the social situation and physical setting in which a painting is viewed. It is discussed how expertise in art influences meaning making by presenting different models and frameworks of aesthetic processing: Developmental models describing identified skills and abilities of beholders in reference to different stages of visual literacy, and cognitive models conceptualizing meaning making as a sequence of perceptual, emotional and cognitive processes that take place while looking at a present work of art. Leder et al.’s cognitive model (2004) that describes aesthetic processing in five stages and considering possible influences of expertise and context is combined with Panofsky’s model of iconography and iconology (1975) that describes a systematic method of art historic art inquiry and built into an integrated model of meaning making used as basic framework for analyses in this dissertation. Studies of aesthetic psychology are reviewed and presented in accordance to Leder et al.’s (2004) and Panofsky’s (1975) model to discuss differences in meaning making of experts and laymen of art. These theoretical and analytical considerations are used to examine the special expertise of art historians in relation to meaning making with art. Referring to the form versus content approach in aesthetic psychology and using the integrated model of aesthetic processing as basic theoretical framework...

Over the last 100 years, since the dawning of the modernist era in the 19th century, there have been major developments in the fields of art practice and theory, altering the course of art history. Changes that occurred in the late 1960s saw the emergence of a conceptual era of art, in which the emphasis and value within art altered; an art object's value was no longer inherent within that object. Rather value was applied through cultural context and what the artworks means. This is particularly evident in the growing environmental art movement. Environmental art is an expansive movement that involves an artistic process or artwork where the artist actively engages with the environment. It is a widely diverse discipline encompassing small personal works, including earth/body art and performance, to permanent, large-scale works. Through specific themed chapters, this thesis aims to establish some of the ways the paradigm of environmental art has evolved since its beginnings in the 1960s. This will be achieved through investigations of three dominant themes and forms of interaction, within environmental art. This thesis focuses on the areas of environmental art that clearly illustrate key concepts in the movement. It explores concepts within feminist art...

Parliament House art and craft: rotational contemporary collection: history, intention, fulfilment and the futurre

This report focuses on the contemporary rotational art collection in Parliament House that is intended for the use of Members and Senators in their offices and suites. The design of Parliament House by architects Mitchell/Giurgola and Thorpe (MGT) incorporated a revolutionary Art and Craft Program of purchases and commissions which was to add meaning and a conceptual theme to the building in order to express the unique democracy and identity of Australia. Chapter one highlights this as well as the inaugural formation of an Art Advisory Committee (AAC) which was to guide the Art and Craft Program. It also highlights the facilitation and creation of the collection in terms of acquisition policies. The easy execution of a fulfilled and representative art collection was encumbered due to government initiated budget cuts to the Parliament House construction in 1986. These cuts effected the contemporary art collection greatly, which is discussed in chapter two. In the interim period between the 1986 budget cuts and 1994 few acquisitions were made in relation to the contemporary art collection and the Art Section was run merely as a service to parliamentarians, offering the art which was purchased between 1983 and 1986. In 1994...

The purpose of this Ph.D. thesis on ?migr? art historians in Britain is not only to show how alien the concept of art history was to the British before 1933, but also to assess and qualify the subsequent practical and theoretical contribution of art historians who immigrated to Britain. These 93 art historians who immigrated to Great Britain after 1933 had a major impact on the British art world. Yet, apart from a few monographs on Sir Ernst Gombrich and Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, no in-depth study has ever been done on this influx of scholars who changed the - picture of art history in Britain and, by extension, worldwide. Part one is a biographical enquiry based on both archival and historical research undertaken in Germany, work done in various private estates and public archives in Britain - the majority of which have never been utilised before - and interviews carried out both in Germany and Britain. It addresses fundamental issues about lewishness and the arts and gives an overview of the stages of Nazi persecution of art-related professions in Central Europe. It then categorises different groups which emerged in Britain between 1933 and 1945, depending on both gender issues and the intellectual background of the emigres. Eventually...

This capstone project focuses on creating a modified art curriculum for deaf students with secondary disabilities. From personal experiences, there are art curriculums designed for special education students in general and art curriculums for deaf students, but there is no art curriculum for deaf students with disabilities. Since deaf students with disabilities at residential schools already face a limitation by not being able to hear, they shouldn't face more limitations due to another disability. This paper will present what researchers have said about teaching art to both special education students and deaf students. This paper will also include how deaf and special education students' benefit from creating art and what needs to be done to modify or create a curriculum for deaf students with disabilities. Art is an education area where there is a need for improvement. Coming from a strong art background I chose the idea of establishing a curriculum for deaf students with disabilities, also known as "Deaf plus" because I had first hand experience and some struggle finding resources for teaching art to this specialized population. I know this same issue will continue without a proper resource. During my first internship in Canada...
