We present an efficient numerical methodology for the 31) computation of incompressible multi-phase flows described by conservative phase-field models We focus here on the case of density matched fluids with different viscosity (Model H) The numerical method employs adaptive mesh refinements (AMR) in concert with an efficient semi-implicit time discretization strategy and a linear, multi-level multigrid to relax high order stability constraints and to capture the flow`s disparate scales at optimal cost. Only five linear solvers are needed per time-step. Moreover, all the adaptive methodology is constructed from scratch to allow a systematic investigation of the key aspects of AMR in a conservative, phase-field setting. We validate the method and demonstrate its capabilities and efficacy with important examples of drop deformation, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, and flow-induced drop coalescence (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. Visual field losses associated with mercury (Hg) exposure have only been assessed in patients exposed to methylmercury. Here we evaluate the automated visual field in 35 ex-workers (30 males; 44.20+/-5.92 years) occupationaly exposed to mercury vapor and 34 controls (21 males; 43.29+/-8.33 years). Visual fields were analyzed with the Humphrey Field Analyzer II (model 750i) using two tests: the standard automated perimetry (SAP, white-on-white) and the short wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP, blue-on-yellow) at 76 locations within a 27 degrees central visual field. Results were analyzed as the mean of the sensitivities measured at the fovea, and at five successive concentric rings, of increasing eccentricity, within the central field. Compared to controls, visual field sensitivities of the experimental group measured using SAP were lower for the fovea as well as for all five eccentricity rings (p<0.05). Sensitivities were significantly lower in the SWAP test (p<0.05) for four of the five extra-foveal eccentricity rings; they were not significant for the fovea (p = 0.584) or for the 15 degrees eccentricity ring (p = 0.965). These results suggest a widespread reduction of sensitivity in both visual field tests. Previous reports in the literature describe moderate to severe concentric constriction of the visual field in subjects with methylmercury intoxication measured manually with the Goldman perimeter. The present results amplify concerns regarding potential medical risks of exposure to environmental mercury sources by demonstrating significant and widespread reductions of visual sensitivity using the more reliable automated perimetry. This paper presents a new approach to develop Field Programmable Analog Arrays (FPAAs),(1) which avoids excessive number of programming elements in the signal path, thus enhancing the performance. The paper also introduces a novel FPAA architecture, devoid of the conventional switching and connection modules. The proposed FPAA is based on simple current mode sub-circuits. An uncompounded methodology has been employed for the programming of the Configurable Analog Cell (CAC). Current mode approach has enabled the operation of the FPAA presented here, over almost three decades of frequency range. We have demonstrated the feasibility of the FPAA by implementing some signal processing functions.

The weak gravitational field expansion method to account for the gravitationally induced neutrino oscillation effect is critically examined, then it is shown that the splitting of the neutrino phase into a kinematic and a gravitational phase is not always possible because the relativistic factor modifies the particle interference phase splitting condition in a gravitational field.

This paper describes the main phases of development of an Institute of Chemistry in relation with national policy from the academic field. Its history begins with a proposal to meet the demand for chemistry teacher education and goes on to become a major center for research, education and extension. Throughout its 50 years of history, the Institution has faced numerous challenges by adopting strategies that have established and revealed its institutional habitus. To this end, we use some of René Kaës’s concepts about the development of groups and institutions, highlighting mainly the origins, expectations and covenants that underpinned its foundation, and the entire process of its expansion and institutionalization. Our main focus, also interpreted based on the theory of Pierre Bourdieu and followers, is the establishment of its institutional habitus, i.e., how it interprets and organizes its institutional teaching, research and extension activities within the context of the academic field. The peculiarity of the process has been the mismatch between internal and external pressures. Even though presenting the results of a case study, in general, our methodology can improve the understanding of institution’s development in relation with educational policy.

Fourteen deans of business schools were interviewed to obtain their assessment of the current state of the IS field in terms of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing the discipline. Their observations are organized into nine categories: (1) interaction with the business community, (2) demand for IS courses, (3) identity of the IS field, (4) cross disciplinary nature of the field, (5) research rigor versus relevance, (6) competitors to IS, (7) cost of information technology, (8) shortage of IS faculty, and (9) shortage of IS leaders. These findings are compared with those from an earlier study with leaders in the IS academic field. The differences in perspectives have implications and lead to doable recommendations for the field: (1) work on branding IS, (2) strive for more consistency in IS courses across universities, (3) help provide hardware and software resources, and (4) create an electronic journal that publishes technical research.

This paper analyses the impact of learning strategies, gender, academic field attended and students’ entrance classification to the university on academic achievement at the end of the first academic year. The study, developed with 445 first-year college students (68.5% female), ages between 17 and 57 years old (M = 18.3; SD = 2.17), from the University of Minho (Portugal), implicated answering a questionnaire on learning strategies, which concerned five dimensions (comprehensive approach, surface approach, personal competency perceptions, intrinsc motivation and organization of study activities). Regression analyses showed that academic achievement was more related to students’ entrance classifications to the university than to their learning strategies, independently of the academic field attended. Despite the significance of the other variables, these results seem to highlight the relationship between students’ academic preparation and their achievement at the end of the first-year.; Cet article analyse le rôle de la préparation académique et des stratégies d’apprentissage dans la prediction des resultats académiques des étudiants collegiens portugais de premiere année, considerant le sexe des étudiants et le champ d’etudes poursuivies. This article is based on the assumption that the construction of scientific knowledge is a social process characterized by the recursive dynamic between the social and intellectual dimensions. In light of this statement, we investigated how the construction of the institutional perspective is delineated in the context of organizational studies in Brazil from 1993 to 2007. The study is based on documentary research of articles published in scientific journals and at academic events. For this purpose, we analyzed social networks and used bibliometric indicators in order to map the cooperation relationships between researchers and intellectual framework, based on the cited authors. The results show the influence of social relationships in the process of constructing scientific knowledge. The findings reveal that the expansion of the field is based on the growing elaboration of a social organization with close links to the activities of continuant and transient researchers. These circumstances denote the stratification both of production and the relationships between authors, since continuant and transient researchers are responsible for the intermediation of relations and the consolidation of production in the academic field that is being analyzed. The findings also reveal a secondary dynamic of the activities of researchers located on the margin of the network and the presence of Brazilian researchers among the most cited authors...

Radiant frost is a major abiotic stress, particularly at the reproductive stage, in field pea (Pisum sativum L.) grown in Mediterranean environments. Here, response to frost was studied for flowering stage (FS) organs (buds, flowers and set pods) and pod development stage (PDS) organs (flat, swollen and mature pods) under controlled conditions, with plants exposed to a minimum temperature of –4.8°C for 4 h. This frost treatment adversely affected seed yield through (i) abortion of buds, flowers and set pods (ii) death of pods and (iii) reduction in seed size. FS organs were more sensitive to frost than PDS organs. Genetic variation was observed among 83 accessions collected from 34 countries worldwide for survival of FS buds, flowers and set pods. In 60 of 83 accessions, no buds, flowers or set pods survived the frost treatment. Five accessions: ATC 104 (origin: United Kingdom), ATC 377 (Estonia), ATC 968 (Italy), ATC 3992 (Kazakhstan) and ATC 4204 (China), showed the highest frost tolerance of FS organs and lowest numbers of abnormal seeds. The frost tolerant accessions identified in this study may be useful as parents for breeding field pea varieties that will be less likely to suffer yield loss due to radiant frost during the reproductive stage.; Shaista Shafiq...

To envision the field of journalism as having, or lacking, its own theoretical status, somewhat dependent on conceptual and theoretical paradigms borrowed from the human and social sciences has become an important issue in academic discussions of journalism in Brazil. Tentative demarcations of an autonomous scientific field of research for journalism seem to ignore the ongoing epistemological debate of the bigger field in which journalism is inserted, that of Communication. This article aims at analysing different concepts of field used in this debate criticizing (a) the indiscriminate use of terms such as scientific field, academic field, professional and epistemological fields and (b) the equivocal effort to to reduce the object of study of the Journalism to practices of profession or in promoting fragmentation of its object.; Pensar o campo do jornalismo como possuidor ou não de um estatuto científico próprio, menos ou mais dependente de arcabouços conceituais, metodológicos e teóricos de outros campos das ciências sociais e humanas, vem tornando-se, nos últimos anos no Brasil, uma questão de destaque na rotina acadêmica. As tentativas de demarcação desse campo científico como autônomo, porém, parecem ignorar as reflexões epistemológicas sobre o campo maior no qual está inserido...

This paper aims to analyze the researche developed in the Physical Education academic field of two south American countries, Argentina and Brazil, based on Michel Foucault´s work. Our analysis focuses three Brazilian researchers: Homero Luis Alves de Lima, Alex Branco Fraga and Luiz Carlos Rigo and three Argentinian ones: Ángela Aisenstein, Ricardo Crisorio and Pablo Ariel Scharagrodsky. We show how these investigations are mostly based on the second foucaultian dominium, as well their relevance to denounce conditions such as disciplinarization of the bodies and the bio political control of the population. Nevertheless, the 3rd dominium of Foucault´s work is not referred. We assume that this dominium would be helpful to construct a pedagogical proposal for physical education, beyond mere criticism.; Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar las investigaciones desarrolladas en el campo académico de la Educación Física en Argentina y Brasil basadas en la obra de Michel Foucault. Considering that Brazilian researches on translation and interpreting from/into/between sign languages can be combined into what is known as Sign Language Translation and Interpreting Studies (SLTIS), we carry out a reflection on the emergence of this new academic field and its direct connection to Translation Studies (TS) and Interpreting Studies (IS). Hence, we shall present the interdependence and fundamental distinction between TS and IS, search for references in the interpreting and translation of sign languages in major TS and IS writings, and reflect on the SLTIS in Brazil. This reflection is based on sign language translation and interpreting research carried out in graduate school and on the four editions of the National Conference on Sign Language Translation and Interpreting Research. We have observed that while the SLTIS stand out for involving a visual-gestural language, they also maintain an undeniable and necessary link to their origins, since they have no existence beyond the TS and IS academic fields.; http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7968.2015v35nesp2p17Considerando que as pesquisas brasileiras sobre a tradução e a interpretação de/para/entre línguas de sinais podem ser reunidas sobre o que se apresenta como Estudos da Tradução e da Interpretação de Línguas de Sinais (ETILS)...
