Heart failure (HF) is associated with changes in the skeletal muscle (SM) which might be a consequence of the unbalanced local expression of pro- (TNF-alpha) and anti- (IL-10) inflammatory cytokines, leading to inflammation-induced myopathy, and SM wasting. This local effect of HF on SM may, on the other hand, contribute to systemic inflammation, as this tissue actively secretes cytokines. Since increasing evidence points out to an anti-inflammatory effect of exercise training, the goal of the present study was to investigate its effect in rats with HF after post-myocardial infarction (MI), with special regard to the expression of TNF-alpha and IL-10 in the soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL), muscles with different fiber composition. Wistar rats underwent left thoracotomy with ligation of the left coronary artery, and were randomly assigned to either a sedentary (Sham-operated and MI sedentary) or trained (Sham-operated and MI trained) group. Animals in the trained groups ran on a treadmill (0% grade at 13-20 m/min) for 60 min/day, 5 days/week, for 8-10 weeks. The training protocol was able to reverse the changes induced by MI, decreasing TNF-alpha protein (26%, P < 0.05) and mRNA (58%, P < 0.05) levels in the soleus, when compared with the sedentary MI group. Training also increased soleus IL-10 expression (2.6-fold...

White adipose tissue (WAT) is the source of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and recently, it has been recognized as an important source of interleukin 10 (IL-10). Acute physical exercise is known to induce an anti-inflammatory cytokine profile, however, the effect of chronic physical exercise on the production of IL-10 by WAT has never been examined. We assessed IL-10 and TNF-alpha concentration in WAT of rats engaged in endurance training. Animals were randomly assigned to either a sedentary control group (S, n = 7) or an endurance trained group (T, n = 8). Trained rats ran on a treadmill 5 days/wk for 8 wk (55-65% VO(2max). Detection of IL-10 and TNF-alpha protein and mRNA expression, as well as the gene expression of PPAR-gamma, and immunocytochemistry to detect mononuclear phagocytes were carried out. A reduction in absolute retroperitoneal adipose tissue (RPAT) weight in T (44%; p < 0.01), when compared with S was observed. IL-10 concentration was increased (1.5-fold, p < 0.05), to a higher extent than that of TNF-alpha (66%. p < 0.05) in the mesenteric adipose tissue (MEAT) of the trained group, while no change related to training was observed in RPAT. In MEAT, IL-10/TNF-alpha ratio was increased in T, when compared with S (30%; p < 0.05). PPAR-gamma gene expression was increased in T (1.1-fold; p < 0.01)...

The present study examined the effects of aerobic training and energy restriction on adipokines levels in mesenteric (MEAT) and retroperitoneal (RPAT) white adipose tissue from obese rats. Male Wistar rats were fed with standard laboratory diet (Control group) or high fat diet (HFD). After 15 weeks, HFD rats were randomly assigned to the following groups: rats submitted to HFD, which were sedentary (sedentary HFD, n = 8) or trained (trained HFD, n = 8); or submitted to energy-restriction (ER), which were sedentary (sedentary ER, n = 8) or trained (trained ER, n = 8). Trained rats ran on a treadmill at 55% VO(2max) for 60 min/day, 5 days/week, for 10 weeks. ER rats were submitted to a reduction of 20% daily caloric ingestion compared to the Control group. ER and aerobic training decreased body weight, MEAT and RPAT absolute weight, and fat mass. IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-alpha levels were decreased and adiponectin did not change in RPAT in response to ER protocol. On the other hand, ER and the aerobic training protocol decreased IL-6, TNF-alpha and adiponectin levels in MEAT. Absolute MEAT weight showed a positive correlation with IL-6 (r = 0.464), INF-alpha (r = 0.508); and adiponectin (r = 0.342). These results suggest a tissue-specific heterogeneous response in adipokines level. The combination of the protocols (aerobic training and energy restriction) did not induce an enhanced effect. The training of Psychologists tries to promote the psychological understanding of the human functioning, the development of evaluation, analysis and intervention competences and, at the same time, to provide for the development of personal and interpersonal competences, crucial for the professional praxis. Our question is how to promote in the academic context this personal and interpersonal development of the students in order to achieve the necessary competences they need to the work in this area. In this paper we will reflect on the authors’ experience of teaching two curricular units of the 2nd Cycle level of Psychology Course and on a qualitative study designed to deepen the understanding of how the experiential component of these courses is experienced by students. Our paper will report on the specificities of students versus teachers’ perceptions of the experiential activities and the development of personal and interpersonal competences. Furthermore links between the type of perceptions and the nature of the methods used in each curricular unit will be discussed. 1

This work had the objective to reveal the challenges and the possibilities faced with hysical Education courses when they are confronted with the curricular reforms, which reflect on the demands of professional training. The alterations of the professional academic training, results of the Resolutions Educacion National Consuel 01 e 02/2002 e 07/2004, provoked discussions and conflicts between the professionals and theoretics of the area that understand a different way in the training of Physical Education. They also provoked a politic-pedagogic redirection of the professional training curricles that are still in the phase of adjustment in some institutions. The study reveals a complex network that involves the professional training in Physical Education in the Brazilian scenario, and the necessity to lengthen the discussions between professionals and education institutions. The main focus of this research was the study of curricular changes of two Physical Education courses, both related with this researcher s academic and professional background. Both are located in the southern region in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. One is a public institution and the other is a collective. The purpose of this investigation is to analyze these curricles; to identify the coordinators and teachers views and knowledge of the curricular reform of these Physical Education courses; and to show the impact of these reforms on the professional and academic training. For that we used a qualitative way of research. The methodological choices were defined in two bases of investigation: one was a documental analysis of the pedagogic projects in the courses and the other was partially structured interviews with the coordinators and teachers of the IES (Institutions of Superior Educations). From the data found we analyzed its contents with a defined category. As a result...

Ghana has a youthful population of 24 million and has shown impressive gains in economic growth and in poverty reduction over the last two decades. The necessary sustained growth requires three critical steps: (1) increase productivity in the strategic economic sectors, (2) diversify the economy, and (3) expand employment. Raising the level and range of skills in the country provides a key contribution to these core drivers of sustained growth. Skills development in Ghana encompasses foundational skills (literacy, numeracy), transferable and soft skills, and technical and vocational skills. These skills are acquired throughout life through formal education, training, and higher education; on the job through work experience and professional training; through family and community; and via the media. This report focuses on one segment of Ghana s skills development system: formal and informal technical and vocational education and training (TVET) at the pre-tertiary level. Although TVET alone does not guarantee productivity gains or job creation...

Background. An intensive 3-day training programme, the ‘Registrar Research Workshop’ (RRW), has aimed to build research capacity among Australian general practice registrars since 1994. Objectives. To investigate the impact of the RRW on participants’ skills, confidence, interest in research and research activity. Methods. Cross-sectional postal survey in 2006 of five groups of registrars who participated in the annual workshop in 2002–2006 (response rate: 64%; 77 of 121). Outcome measures included research experience and skills prior to and after the workshop; impact of the workshop on capacity, confidence, attitude and interest in research; and research involvement as measured by publications and grant funding. Results. Self-reported research skills increased over time for the whole group (two-way analysis of variance: P = 0.047), most significantly for registrars with little or no research experience (P < 0.001) and research project participants (P = 0.003). The impact of the workshop on capacity, confidence and interest in research was rated highly (mean 3.5–4.0 ± 0.1 on a five-point scale). Two-thirds of the survey respondents had been research active, 34% presented their findings at conferences, 25% published in peer-reviewed journals and 31% received research funding. Eighty-four per cent of respondents indicated a high interest in undertaking research in the future. All survey respondents recommended the workshop to other registrars. Conclusions. The RRW provides a useful model for effective research training for interested general practice trainees. Such training has the potential to increase knowledge of research methods...

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited; Space is an increasingly congested, contested and competitive environment. At the same time, the Marine Corps is becoming increasingly reliant on the capabilities space-based assets provide. This includes each of the space force enhancement capabilities, but particularly satellite-based voice and data communication; position, navigation, and timing information; and battlefield intelligence. Space capabilities are vulnerable to both space-based and terrestrial-based countermeasures. This study was conducted to determine the extent to which the Marine Corps educates and trains warfighters to operate in a battlefield where space-centric enabling capabilities are degraded or denied. The study surveyed the systems and capabilities on which the Marine Corps relies in order to enhance its execution of the highly dynamic range of military operations as well as the threats to those systems and capabilities. Furthermore, the study examined to what levels and extent related training and education should take place, and which venues would best host that training. Based on the analysis, this thesis recommends leveraging internal Marine Corps expertise, increasing integration of space-related education and training into schoolhouse curricula and training exercises...

After three decades of conflict, Afghanistan needs a well-trained and flexible workforce to help rebuild the country. The conflict has decimated Afghanistan's training infrastructure, torn the fabric of human society, and relegated the country to the status of one of the least developed in the world. The country's efforts to emerge from near-total collapse is hampered by a number of factors, one of which is absence of a well-educated and -trained labor force able to acquire the skills and trades the country needs as it grows. A well-trained labor force will yield higher levels of productivity and be able to accommodate the changing needs of a post conflict economy while ensuring higher earnings and greater mobility for workers. Though most of the Afghan labor force is in the informal sector, skills acquisition judiciously combined with literacy and numeric programs should produce a workforce able to adapt modern production technologies and take advantage of opportunities through self-employment and small-enterprise development. The report is organized into four sections. Section one provides an introduction to Afghanistan. Section two focuses on recent economic trends and labor market demands. Section three is an overview of the country's education and training sector...

International guidelines recommend a first line therapy in the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI), the pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training. This case report assesses the effects of the PFM training program in treating women with severe SUI. The urodynamic parameters allow diagnosed intrinsic sphincter deficiency and urethral hypermobility. The subjective and objective parameters were assessed at the beginning and after six-month of PFM training program. This case report confirms the efficiency of the intensive training program in severe SUI. The medical implications of the PFM training as first treatment option reflect favourable individual results and additionally contribute to the selection of the non-invasive treatment, the reduction of the incidence collateral effects, low costs and that does not prevent future treatment options.

BACKGROUND: Recent changes in the organization of the National Health Service have created new roles and responsibilities for academic general practice. Previous work on the constraints and opportunities of a career in academic general practice is largely anecdotal and is often based on the views of more senior members of the profession. AIM: To survey the research activity, perceived level of training, support needs, and career intentions of junior academic general practitioners (GPs). METHOD: A postal, validated, semistructured questionnaire was sent to the 121 eligible junior academic GPs in the academic departments of general practice in the United Kingdom and Dublin. Main outcome measures were 'research activity score', as measured by publications in peer-reviewed journals and involvement in research projects, 'training score' devised from 13 skills required for both research and teaching, and perceived level of departmental support assessed by six different support mechanisms. RESULTS: Response rate was 89% (n = 108). Forty-six responders (43%) had no publications. Twenty-five responders (23%) had no principal project. Thirty-nine responders (37%) had a mentor. Research activity appeared to be dependent on sex, having a predominantly research role rather than a full-time teaching role...

Even though social and emotional well-being has been proposed as a main goal of education, its association with academic achievement is usually overlooked, particularly considering that educational institutions are requested to show academic outcomes, and thus their focus is on cognitive development and academic training. This study adopts a multilevel perspective to test this association among Chilean elementary students, considering features at individual (socio-emotional well-being, self esteem, and social integration) and social levels (classroom social climate and social network characteristics). Results show that socio-emotional variables, and particularly teachers' ratings of their students' self esteem, are associated with academic achievement. Interaction effects of individual and contextual variables are presented, and implications for research and interventions are discussed.
