Organizations have in-built social responsibility to society. The evolution of technology have enable organizations to interact in an innovatively and more close approach to their clients. But this evolution has not included people with special needs like blind people. And, even those organizations that have enable some kind of support-approach to blind people, have typically disjointed, incomplete and typically parallel approaches; compared to their massclient standard approach. This paper discusses the potential of Pervasive and Mobile Computing to support, not just an innovative and unified approach, but also a real possibility of promoting real inclusion of blind people in what concerns to the delivery of information and services organizations offer. This paper also represents a reflection and a mind shaking attempt, while the authors are working in allowing blind people an autonomous buying process, in hypermarkets, supported by the use of wireless networks and modern mobile devices, with multiple technologies support, like Wi-Fi and inertial and magnetic sensors.

Introduction: The pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) is a narrow space located between the posterior wall of the antrum and the pterygoid plates. Surgical access to the PPF is difficult because of its protected position and its complex neurovascular anatomy. Endonasal approaches using rod lens endoscopes, however, provide better visualization of this area and are associated with less morbidity than external approaches. Our aim was to develop a simple anatomical model using cadaveric specimens injected with intravascular colored silicone to demonstrate the endoscopic anatomy of the PPF. This model could be used for surgical instruction of the transpterygoid approach. Methods: We dissected six PPF in three cadaveric specimens prepared with intravascular injection of colored material using two different injection techniques. An endoscopic endonasal approach, including a wide nasoantral window and removal of the posterior antrum wall, provided access to the PPF. Results: We produced our best anatomical model injecting colored silicone via the common carotid artery. We found that, using an endoscopic approach, a retrograde dissection of the sphenopalatine artery helped to identify the internal maxillary artery (IMA) and its branches. Neural structures were identified deeper to the vascular elements. Notable anatomical landmarks for the endoscopic surgeon are the vidian nerve and its canal that leads to the petrous portion of the internal carotid artery (ICA)...

Object. The goal of this paper is to analyze the extension and relationships of glomus jugulare tumor with the temporal bone and the results of its surgical treatment aiming at preservation of the facial nerve. Based on the tumor extension and its relationships with the facial nerve, new criteria to be used in the selection of different surgical approaches are proposed. Methods. Between December 1997 and December 2007, 34 patients (22 female and 12 male) with glomus jugulare tumors were treated. Their mean age was 48 years. The mean follow-up was 52.5 months. Clinical findings included hearing loss in 88%, swallowing disturbance in 50%, and facial nerve palsy in 41%. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a mass in the jugular foramen in all cases, a mass in the middle ear in 97%, a cervical mass in 85%, and an intradural mass in 41%. The tumor was supplied by the external carotid artery in all cases, the internal carotid artery in 44%, and the vertebral artery in 32%. Preoperative embolization was performed in 15 cases. The approach was tailored to each patient, and 4 types of approaches were designed. The infralabyrinthine retrofacial approach (Type A) was used in 32.5%; infralabyrinthine pre- and retrofacial approach without occlusion of the external acoustic meatus (Type B) in 20.5%; infralabyrinthine pre- and retrofacial approach with occlusion of the external acoustic meatus (Type C) in 41 W. and the infralabyrinthine approach with transposition of the facial nerve and removal of the middle ear structures (Type D) in 6% of the patients. Results. Radical removal was achieved in 91% of the cases and partial removal in 9%. Among 20 patients without preoperative facial nerve dysfunction...

Objective Epidermoid cysts of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) can be a surgical challenge for the pediatric neurosurgeon. Ideally, total removal must be achieved; however, occasional adhesions of these tumors to vital neurovascular structures and extension far beyond the midline may preclude their total removal. The aims of this article are to present an alternative surgical approach to these lesions and to provide the rationale for this technique. Material and methods A 16-year-old boy was admitted to our pediatric neurosurgery department with a 1-year history of nonspecific headaches. His neurological examination showed right-sided dysmetria and gait ataxia. Magnetic resonance scans showed a space-occupying lesion on the right CPA with low intensity on T-1-weighted images and high intensity on T-2-weighted images. Results Craniotomy for tumor excision via pre- and subtemporal transtentorial approach was performed disclosing a 3.5 x 3 x 2.8-cm(3) well-encapsulated tumor, which was confirmed to be an epidermoid cyst. The postoperative course was uneventful. Conclusions A combined pre- and subtemporal approach utilizes a wide opening of the tentorium and the option of supratentorial retraction of the cerebellum to provide an excellent angle of approach to CPA lesions involving the anterolateral aspect of the brain stem in children.

Um estudo de caso utilizando as linguagens Java e AspectJ é apresentado para ilustrar as idéias propostas; This work investigates how the development of software product lines can benefit from the use of aspect-oriented programming to reduce coupling and increase cohesion of the product line features.

The object of this research is to apprehend (the) demonstration of science-technology-society (STS) interrelations during biology s teachers pedagogical practice from public school supported by the state of Goiás in Goiânia city. Since this research is about the practice of nine teachers of three schools seeking to highlight the complex relationship between teaching formation and the STS approach it was developed on a case study model. In order to construction of data, official documents which propose secondary school curriculum - exploratory questionnaire, semi structured interview and class notes were analyzed. To make the triangulation of the data possible, four analysis categories were used which are professional profile, aspects of pedagogical practice related to teaching methodologies, conceptions about the STS interrelations and STS demonstrations during pedagogical practice. The analysis also made possible the development of themes to elucidate aspects that are intrinsic to the approach of STS interrelation. The focus on STS interrelations is presented in official documents about secondary education by signs which demonstrate the need of problematizing a contextualized and interdisciplinary education. However, it is still notable some gaps on the approach and on the ambiguous concepts that allows practices that will perturb the achievement of goals of the proposed approach. As regards the concepts of teachers about the STS interrelation...

The Approach STS has been advocated as an alternative facilitator of Literacy Scientific-Technological front to the problems faced by the Science Teaching. In this context, the guidelines for Science Teaching contained in Political-Pedagogical Proposal of Youth and Adult Education, in the city of Goiânia Goiás was analyzed with the purpose to verify whether and how the same contemplates the Approach STS. The methodological approach was developed along the lines of Documentary Research. For the construction of the data was used to Content Analysis, which allowed the preparation of five categories: Education, School, Science Teaching, Educational Action and Student. The interpretation of these categories has allowed us to see that the methodological, political and ethical issues contained in politicalpedagogical proposal of Goiânia are consistent with the Approach STS, unlike the epistemological aspect. The discussion of the results obtained enable us to make notes concerning the Initial and Continuous Training of Teachers; the importance of Science Teaching through the Approach STS in Young people and Adult Education; as well as the reflections necessary for the insertion of the Approach STS in the Brazilian educational context.; A Abordagem CTS tem sido defendida como uma alternativa facilitadora do Letramento Científico-Tecnológico frente aos problemas enfrentados pelo Ensino de Ciências. Syndromic management approach to sexually transmitted diseases consists of classifying the disease within predetermined syndromes, using flowcharts which are based on signs and symptoms establishing treatment immediately without waiting serological laboratory results for confirmation, providing at the first appointment the diagnosis, treatment and appropriate counseling, interrupting the transmission chain and avoiding the complications of sexually transmitted diseases, thus allowing immediate reversal of symptoms. But its success requires constant evaluation of the protocols, and training of professionals. OBJECTIVE: to assess the impact of in-service education on knowledge of nurses from Family Health Strategy regarding the use of the syndromic approach to sexually transmitted diseases before and after a training course. METHOD: This research was performed through the interventional study approach. The samples consisted of Brazilian Primary Care and Family Health Strategy Nurses. A survey to evaluate the knowledge about the syndromic management approach was applied before and after the education. RESULTS: 71 nurses participated in this study, and there was a significant improvement in knowledge concerning the syndromic approach (p <0.05); in relation to the identification of clinical signs...

peer-reviewed; In a prospective single-centre longitudinal randomized controlled trial 116 patients were allocated to the sub-vastus approach, and 115 to the medial parapatellar approach. At one week follow-up, compared to baseline, range of motion, Knee Society (KS) global, KS knee, and KS pain scores were significantly better in the sub-vastus group. At the one year follow-up, WOMAC global and pain scores, SF36 physical function and role-physical scores, and EuroQol utility and pain score were significantly better in the sub-vastus group. The ease of exposure in the sub-vastus approach was significantly worse. There was no significant difference in length of stay or analgesia intake. The sub-vastus approach to total knee arthroplasty was more effective than a medial parapatellar approach at both one week and one year post-operatively, but surgeons reported a less easy exposure in the sub-vastus group.

The monitoring and evaluation approach advocated in this report uses both qualitative, and quantitative techniques to improve the quality of rural electricity projects. The participatory method spans a variety of well-established qualitative methods, including focus group discussions, pocket voting, and other participatory tools. Community members take an active role in project design, implementation, and evaluation, giving their preferences and opinions in all stages of the project. The survey approach is a mo re quantitative approach, involving the use of questionnaires, random samples of populations, and formal interviews. Inherent in the framework proposed by this report is the evaluation of potential project design approaches, and project impacts on all segments of the target population, including different gender, and social groups. Recommendations suggest a greater emphasis on monitoring and evaluation of socioeconomic development impacts in rural energy projects; monitoring and evaluation application over the duration of a project...

This thesis includes a series of journal articles in which a mechanics based segmental approach is developed for simulating shear behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Using the well-established theories of partial interaction and shear friction, the generic mechanics approach simulates the formation and widening of diagonal cracks and shear sliding failure for RC beams. Being mechanics based, the proposed approach can be generally applied to various kinds of structures, that is any cross section, with any type of concrete and reinforcement and with any bond properties. Moreover, no component of the proposed approach relies on empiricism to account for the mechanics of shear failure, and the approach can accommodate any material characteristics which with time can be refined and revisited to improve the accuracy of shear strength simulation. In developing the mechanics of the segmental approach for prestressed RC beams, it is shown how the approach is applied to analyse shear behaviour and simulate shear failure of prestressed beams. Parametric studies are conducted to explain the effect of prestress on shear behaviour. For verification, the proposed approach is applied to 102 specimens and the analytical and experimental results are in good agreement. The generic nature of the mechanics approach is shown by its application to steel and fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced beams and one-way slabs without stirrups. From the mechanics of the segmental approach...

Approaching positive and avoiding negative stimuli are fundamental principles of behaviour. The Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT) assesses both automatic, compatible reactions (avoid negative, approach positive) as well as their regulation in incompatible conditions (approach negative, avoid positive). So-called stimulus response compatibility effects (SRC effects) denote enhanced reaction times (RTs) in incompatible compared to compatible conditions. Here, in 6 studies, the neuronal (fNIRS, fMRI) and neuropsychological (ERPs) correlates of such SRC effects were investigated in healthy persons reacting to positive and negative IAPS pictures. Most relevant were the following findings: For negative pictures, analyses revealed the mechanism of controlled attention allocation (P3 ERP) to mediate the relation between the personality trait goal-oriented pursuit and behaviour: Stronger willingness to actively regulate behavioural responses was associated with higher controlled attention allocation to the incompatible compared to the compatible condition and – thereby – with less automatic avoidance tendencies in response to negative pictures, i.e., with higher efficiency of regulation. Furthermore, an ad hoc developed, cued GoNoGo AAT variant was combined with fMRI: The cue event indicated participants to prepare a response...

Teaching undergraduate voice requires the use of a practical teaching approach that is functional, concise, and reliable. This final project focuses on ways a repertoire-based approach to singing could be useful in the undergraduate voice curriculum. It is constructed as an argument for a repertoire-based approach as a resource to accompany vocal technique and literature instruction, extending known repertoire-based approaches into a fully gestated philosophical and practical approach. Three research foci are necessary to create a functional repertoire-based approach to singing as outlined in this document. First, an investigation of teaching voice at the undergraduate level is used to create a justification for the need of a repertoire-based approach (including explorations of four images of curricula, the Cognitive Theory, and their relevance in the voice studio, baccalaureate music curricula related to the National Association of Schools of Music, vocal technique and the skills and concepts to be included in undergraduate curriculum through a literature review of pedagogic sources, and the classification of extant models of voice methods and voice approaches). Second, a theory for a repertoire-based approach is necessary, developed through familiar studio scenario...

The radial approach is widely used in the treatment of patients with coronary artery disease. We conducted a meta-analysis of published results on the efficacy and safety of the left and right radial approaches in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary procedures. A systematic search of reference databases was conducted, and data from 14 randomized controlled trials involving 6870 participants were analyzed. The left radial approach was associated with significant reductions in fluoroscopy time [standardized mean difference (SMD)=-0.14, 95% confidence interval (CI)=-0.19 to -0.09; P<0.00001] and contrast volume (SMD=-0.07, 95%CI=-0.12 to -0.02; P=0.009). There were no significant differences in rate of procedural failure of the left and the right radial approaches [risk ratios (RR)=0.98; 95%CI=0.77-1.25; P=0.88] or procedural time (SMD=-0.05, 95%CI=0.17-0.06; P=0.38). Tortuosity of the subclavian artery (RR=0.27, 95%CI=0.14-0.50; P<0.0001) was reported more frequently with the right radial approach. A greater number of catheters were used with the left than with the right radial approach (SMD=0.25, 95%CI=0.04-0.46; P=0.02). We conclude that the left radial approach is as safe as the right radial approach, and that the left radial approach should be recommended for use in percutaneous coronary procedures...

Brooker [Landscape and Urban Planning, in press] recently published a worked example of the focal species approach using bird assemblages in fragmented landscapes of western Australia. We have some concerns about the scientific validity of the focal species approach. As a threat-based biodiversity surrogate scheme, the focal species approach is likely to suffer from similar deficiencies that have been identified for related forms of species-based surrogate schemes such as umbrella species and indicator species approaches. We also raise concerns that the responses of birds, which are the sole group for which the focal species approach has been applied, may not be good species-based indicators of the responses of other vertebrates (such as reptiles, amphibians and mammals) for which selected focal species purport to be a surrogate. There are also non-trivial issues regarding field sampling intensity and patch or fragment size and the potential to underestimate the conservation value of small remnants during applications of the focal species approach. Despite these scientific concerns, we nevertheless consider that the focal species approach may be an important social hook to stimulate restoration activities in degraded landscapes that are now increasingly common not only in Australia...

The partial labyrinthectomy petrous apicectomy (PLPA) approach is a transpetrous route that provides the advantages of the labyrinthine removal but with hearing preservation. Using seven temporal bone tissue blocks and three formaldehyde-fixed cadaveric heads we have made a morphometric and comparative study on this approach that summarizes the invasiveness, the optimal surgical exposure, the anatomic complexity of the skull base approaches and, on the other hand, the spirit of preservation that is the constant aim of modern neurosurgery. The morphometric analysis is designed to make the bony phase of the PLPA approach safer and to define the relationship between petrous landmarks. The comparative study is made between the PLPA and other neurosurgical routes enhancing the potentiality of the PLPA approach that permits a wider angle of incidence towards the brainstem than with the retrosigmoid routes.

The present study quantitatively compares (advantages and disadvantages between) vegetation- and forest-mapping approaches. The results are meant to conciliate use and conservation of the same study subject, the forest. The vegetation approach followed the European school to describe and classify vegetation. A total of 177 relevés were surveyed via a stratified sampling. In total, 13 plant communities were distinguished as well as characteristic species per community. The forest approach followed a stratified systematic sampling design. On the whole, 136 forest stands, comprising 1271 forest substands were recognized. This included the surveying of 4662 sites of approximately 1000m² per site. For comparison purposes, three components were regarded: floristic, vegetation dynamics and spatial distribution. The vegetation approach included 609 vascular plant species, whereas the forest approach only included 11 (those of importance for wooden products). Vegetation dynamics was well represented by the 13 plant communities depicted by the vegetation approach. In contrast, the forest approach only regards dynamics of a few selected plant population species. In the spatial context, a substantial percentage of both approaches were successfully linked (70%). The rest of the forest stands harbor heterogeneous conditions that restricted linking plant communities and forest stands. It is strongly recommended to pursuit a complementary study strategy of both approaches since both provide relevant aspects for forest use and conservation.
